Series of Deaths

the day he finally
got out of jail...
after months, and years,

he stepped out on the street,
and fought back the urge
to run.... to run, and run

to where nobody
knew his name, or
his face... to where he

couldnt even smell
the time he'd lost...

and he walked slowly,
and with dignity, never
looking back, to the car...

a series of deaths...
and a match lit
in a distant window...

a small gust of wind
that no one else can know!

I couldn't fight back

I knew I was defeated.
I knew I had lost.
I couldnt fight back.
I had lost all over again.
A life controlled
By bastards.
Rape and abuse.
Was to take over me.
Each new time.
I was as powerless as the last.
I tryed to fend them off.
But I couldnt.
I was forced to stay still.

So I detached myself
From reality.
Pretended it was all a dream.

Only it was real.
And it was happening.
I tryed to fight back.
But as always I lost.

Come Back To My Love

(bob gaudio/jerry corbetta/john bettis)
I hear you crying
Through a long distance line
Now youre finally saying
It was good to be mine
But you couldnt throw it
cause you didnt know it
And now
You want to come back
Come back to my love
You want to come back
Come back to my love
Bring the guitar in
When you know its all youve got
You finally need me
Always did from the start
But you couldnt show it
cause you didnt know it
And now
You want to come back
Come back to my love
You want to come back
Come back to my love
So I say to you
I cant live without it
But I know its true
And I cant have love in my life
Without you
So girl
Why dont you come back
Come back to my love
Why dont you come back
Come back to my love
Oh girl
Why dont you come back
Come back to my love
You got to come back
Come back to my love
You got to come back
Come back to my love

The Street Only Knew Your Name

Your street, rich street or poor
You should always be sure of your street
There's a place in your heart,
When you know from the start
And you can't be complete without a street
Keep movin' on, just like a train
Sometimes you gotta look back to the street again
Would you prefer all those castles in spain
Or a view of the street from your window pane
When you were young, so young
So very very young
When you were young, so young
So very very young
And the street only knew your name
And the street only knew your name
And the street only knew your name, oh your precious name, precious name
There was walter and joy, kate and roy
All hung around the corner lamplight
Get together sing some songs
Like boppin' the blues - you make me feel alright
That was long before fortune and fame
No such thing as a star when you've played that game
Everyone knew who everyone was
There was no preference in the street no, no
When you were young, so young
So very very young
When you were young, so young
So very very young
And the street only knew your name
And the street only knew your name
And the street only knew your name, oh your precious name
And you walked around in the heart of town
Listening for that sound
And you walk around in the heart of town
Listening for that sound
Blue suede shoes, it was the blue suede shoes
When you were young, so young
So very very young
When you were young, so young
So very very young
And the street only knew your name
And the street only knew your name
And the street only knew your name
And the street only knew your name

Homelessness In Winter

back about 30 years ago,
living on the streets in Charlotte...
finally found a job... was lucky enough
to have a place to take a shower...

sleeping in the backseat of a broke
down Ford Maverick... cold winter...
got up and walked 4 miles to work
every morning,4 miles 'home' in the
evening...

went on for a couple months before
i got a place to live...

so yes i know what homelessness
feels like...and i cant help thinking
about all the empty foreclosed houses....
empty houses, homeless people....

back then, even if you couldnt find a
real job, they had a place where you
could go and line up to do day work...
worked all day for about 25 dollars...
if you couldnt do that, you could always
sell blood.... i dont know what they do
now....i just know it's a hard life...and if
you've got family, got kids...

something to think about the next time
you see a homeless person walking the
streets!

If I could get back the lost years

If I could get back the lost years
I would kiss and wipe all the tears
That fell when I hurt you
That I never noticed, never knew.
If I could get back the lost years
I would bring you back all the cheers
That I never really could bring you
I cared so little, I never knew.
If I could get back the lost years
I would give anything to be together
Just loving and never hurting you
That so sadly I missed, I never knew.

Twenty Years Ago

It's been a long time since I walked
Through this old town
But oh how the memories start to flow
And there's the old movie house
They finally closed it down
You could find me there every Friday night
Twenty years ago.
I worked the counter at the drugstore down the street
But nobody's left there I would know
On Saturday mornings that's where
All my friends would meet
You'd be surprised to know what a dime would buy
Twenty years ago.
All my memories from those days come gather round me
What I'd give if they could take me back in time
It almost seems like yesterday
Where do the good times go?
Life was so much easier twenty years ago.
I guess I should stop by Mr. Johnson's hardware store
His only son was my friend Joe
But he joined the army back in 1964
How could we know he would never come back
Twenty years ago...

In The Way Back Then

Seven years ago,
I went back to Canada
after forty-two years.
I walked down a road
to show my wife where I used to live.
The road was built on rolling hills
and as I came over one,
I knew instantly where I was.
Things had changed
in those forty-two years,
some would say
it was unrecognisable
from what I used to know,
but as soon as I started down the hill
things came back like yesterday.
It was as if I had never been away.
Memories of my childhood
instantly sprang to mind.
I found myself seeing things
not as the now,
but there were changes
from the way back then.
The memory flashes
brought a smile to my face
as I could visualise
all the friends I knew then,
the funny incidents that over my life
in the way back then.
All too soon, time
has a way of taking things back
and my memory reclined them
to the back door of my mind.

Running In The Family

Our dad
Would send us to our room
Hed be the voice of doom
He said that we would thank him later
All day
He was solid as a rock
But by eight oclock
Wed be crumbling
One night
My brother joe and me
Climbed down the family tree
That grew outside our bedroom window
We ran
Though we knew it couldnt last
Running from the past
From things that we were born to be
Looking back its so bizarre
It runs in the family
All the things we are
On the back seat of the car
With joseph and emily
We only see so far
- and we all have our daddys eyes
Looking back its so bizarre
Dad rang
The officer in charge
A man so large
He barely fit his circumstances
He said
Two kids out on the street
Were picked up on the beat
And in the station
So theres me
With emily and joe
Daddy driving home
All heading in the same direction
He knew
No matter what the breaks
Wed make the same mistakes
Couldnt take his eyes of joe and me
Looking back its so bizarre
It runs in the family
All the things we are
On the backseat of the car
With joseph and emily
We only see so far
- and we all have our daddys eyes
Looking back its so bizarre
It runs in the family
All the things we are
Looking back its so bizarre
Like a dream within a dream
Were all somewhere in between
Like a drummer plays his drum
Like a father like a son
- and your gonna have to face the music
- face the music
Hey hey
We keep it running in the family
Hey hey
We keep it coming in the family
Looking back its so bizarre
It runs in the family
All the things we are
On the backseat of the car
With joseph and emily
We only see so far
- cause we all have our daddys eyes
Take me back into your arms
Its no longer a mystery
No cause for alarm
Could have never come this far
With no sense of history
It always leaves a scar
- and we all have our daddys eyes
Looking back its so bizarre
Running in the family
Hey, hey!

Julie Dont Live Here

I wander through a town
A town I new so well but it seems so strange
The wind blows cold
I remember when I thought your street was paved with gold
I walked along the street
A street I walked along many times before
The things have changed
Everything I knew was gone or rearranged
Chorus: julie dont live here anymore
She moved away many years before
How can it be, this I cant believe
Julie dont live here anymore
I walked up to your door
Last night I saw your face in the window
But it was different now
The lonely light where we used to be quite gone
I though about your smile
Your laughing eyes and the things you said to me
I felt so sorry for you
For all the nights we spent hanging around with nothing else to do
Chorus
Chorus
Julie dont live here anymore
Julie dont live here anymore
Julie dont live here anymore

Tinkerbell is back

Slowly a small white dog
steals up on our yard in the street
with big black outstanding eyes
and she watches scared,
at every thing that she sees
as far as she walks.

There’s something familiar to her
and the small pink tongue
that hangs out of her mouth
where she stands dehydrated
against the green palisades,
the emaciated small body
on which the spinal cord
and ribs protrude
and the small tail
that wraps into the stomach
tells their own tale
of neglection
and lovelessness
and of people
that has lost all humanity.

My heart rejoices because Tinkie is back
and Tinkerbell has escaped from somewhere
and I know that there’s a Lord
that answers prayers,
but if I get hold
of the people
that had stolen her
I will loose more than just my head
and it feels as if I can kill them
with my bare hands.

Somewhere nearby
there’s a lady that sells cosmetics
and my neighbour says
that her child wanted Tinkie
and ten devils,
turn inside my heart
and the Lord
just has to keep me in check.

The front teeth are missing from kicks
and to see the tongue hanging out grudges me
and the vet is wonderful like always
and says that she will be all right with time
and treats her for everything and more
and after more than eight months,
Tinkie is disarranged
and the other dogs
wants to smell her
and my darling and I are happy
because one of our children
is back and there’s again
light and life in her eyes.

Hours By The Window

Day and night
By the window
Of my mind
There you are
In the courtyard
One last time
The singing of a famous song Ive never heard before
A man without a shadow slowly walking past my door
My mind projects a face soon to be free of misery
The chiming of some distant bell that echoes in my heart
A dance upon the flagstones to the music of the stars
A mothers name that lingers on a soothing summers breeze
All alone I said no prayers today
I couldnt kneel to please the God that failed you
Now youre gone Ill sit and spend each day
Hours by the window
Morning comes
To my rescue
Once again
Whispers in the corridor and footsteps in the hall
My only point of reference now the sunlight on the wall
It draws me to the window where my dreams are memories
A step beyond the line where sunken eyes avert their gaze
An endless tract of time reveals a thousand silent ways
All searching for an answer to lifes deepest mysteries
On the ocean of pure time I sail away
I go and these four walls will not contain me
Maybe there Ill see your face again
Hours by the window
All alone I said no prayers today
I couldnt kneel to please the God that failed you
What Id give to see your face again
Hours by the window

Back Up Against The Wall

(J.R. Cobb/Buddy Buie)
I was dealin' up and down the highway
Till they caught me with a heavy load
They sentenced me to hard labor
Workin' on the side of the road
Now I don't deny I was guilty
And I know I broke the law
I was hungry and broke and couldn't see no hope
And my back was up against the wall
Now I'm right outside your window
Honey open up and let me in
I broke out of jail this mornin'
And I ain't never goin' back again
I just had to stop by for a minute
And I can't stay long at all
'Cause I gotta run you see I'm under the gun
And my back is up against the wall
I was shackled to a three-time loser
A man named Jefferson
One night we got to talkin'
And I asked him what he'd done
He said a man fell over my razor
In the middle of a barroom brawl
But don't you see it was him or me
And my back was up against the wall
Now I'm right outside your window
Honey open up and let me in
I broke out of jail this mornin'
And I ain't never goin' back again
I just had to stop by for a minute
And I can't stay long at all
'Cause I gotta run you see I'm under the gun
And my back is up against the wall
Now I'm right outside your window
Honey open up and let me in
I broke out of jail this mornin'
And I ain't never goin' back again
I just had to stop by for a minute
And I can't stay long at all
'Cause I gotta run you see I'm under the gun
And my back is up against the wall
I gotta run you see I'm under the gun
And my back is up against the wall
Yeah I gotta run you see I'm under the gun
And my back is up against the wall

I'm The Pied Piper

As soon as he turned it on
The wind outside of his room
Stirred up for a few seconds
He thought to himself
"i'll climb out my window
And go sit out there with my radio"
Out the window he went
Sitting against a small stump
Behind some flowerbeds
The light from his bedroom window he could still see
The music of bach was playing
After a while it began to sound distant
As the young prince gazed at this radio on his knee
The music was floating away from his hearing
What could be happening
He took it off of his knee
And put the radio to his ear
Nothing happened
Then the transistor left his hands
And was floating in the mid-air
Two feet off the ground
As the prince laughed
It suddenly turned around
And it was light green phosphourous in color
Dancing back and forth
The magic transistor
Started moving down his path
He could hear the sound out
Like nothing he had ever heard before
The trees were getting closer together
And flowers glowed with tinges of magic light
As he followed thinking to himself
"what's going on?"
The transistor lifted slowly
Up to the top of a little tree
And sat there
While it slowly became louder
To where the prince could hear it clearly
Fireflies shot across the path in front of the prince
He turned around and couldn't see the light from his window
There he was watching all alone all by himself
He got a hunch to get back to his room
And he turned and ran right back

So Much Trouble

My baby left me, my mule got lame,
Lost all my money in a poker game.
Wind storm came one summers day,
Carried the house and lift it away.
Having so much trouble
Having so much trouble.
Im having so much trouble.
Its finally driving me insane.
Carry me to jail my pyjamas on,
I even hate that I was born.
Let me out of jail, come through town.
Couldnt find my wife, she had put me down.
Having so much trouble,
Having so much trouble.
Im having so much trouble:
Its finally driving me insane.
I pawned my watch and I pawned my chain,
I would have pawned myself but I was ashamed.
Got me a job on the city pay
Early one morning layed me off that day.
Im having so much trouble,
Im having so much trouble,
Im having so much trouble,
Bought to drive me insane.
Im having so much trouble:
Its finally driving me insane.

Street Player

Ill never forget those aimless years
Street sounds swirling through my mind
Trouble was often in the air
So we fought to forget our despair
Im a street player
And Ill play you a song
cause you know, my heart & soul
Will carry, carry on
Carry on
Carry on
Carry on
City lifes the only way
Street corners and billiard halls was our home away
Lessons learned still help me today
Im a street player
Ive seen it all
Hitmen, thieves and many a brawl
But as you see I still stand tall
It was such a small space in time
I never knew that I would find
A musical path for all to see
Anxiety into ecstacy
Im a street player
Im a street player
Im a street player
Im a street player
Im a street player
Ive seen it all
Hitmen, thieves and many a brawl
But as you see I still stand tall
It was such a small space in time

On Seeing A Photograph

A photo of an ageing face stirs an old memory
He is plainly not a shadow of the man he used to be
His balding head is hoary gray his hair it was dark brown
When we played football as teenagers in the park in our Hometown.

He was a sprightly youth back then two years younger than I
On looking back the decades the years just seemed to fly
He played football worked in the fields and walked miles every day
But like me he seems the worst for wear the years have left us gray.

Perhaps we would be strangers now if by chance we did meet
We might not recognize each other in passing on the street
We age a little every day time of us all takes care
And leaves us looking in the end the very worst for wear.

A photograph of one I knew from many years ago
And he has aged as I have aged time on us all does show
We played football together when we were near to our life's prime
But in the end we all lose out to ageless father time.

This Was A Movie

Last night I heard my own heart beating
Sounded like footsteps on my stairs
Six months gone and I'm still reaching
Even though I know you're not there
I was playing back a thousand memories,
baby
Thinking 'bout everything we've been
through
Maybe I've been going back too much
lately
When time stood still and I had you
Come back, come back, come back to me
like
You would, you would if this was a movie
Stand in the rain outside 'til I came out
Come back, come back, come back to me
like
You could, you could if you just said you're
sorry
I know that we could work it out somehow
But if this was a movie you'd be here by
now
I know people change and these things
happen
But I remember how it was back then
Wrapped up in your arms and our friends
were laughing
'Cause nothing like this ever happened to
them,
Now I'm pacing down the hall, chasing
down your street
Flashback to the night when you said to me,
'Nothing's gonna change, not for me and
you
Not before I knew how much I had to lose'
Come back, come back, come back to me
like
You would, you would if this was a movie
Stand in the rain outside 'til I came out
Come back, come back, come back to me
like
You could, you could if you just said you're
sorry
I know that we could work it out somehow
But if this was a movie you'd be here by
now
If you're out there
If you're somewhere
If you're moving on
I've been waiting for you
Wary since you've been gone
I just want it back the way it was before
And I just wanna see you back at my front
door
And I say
Come back, come back, come back to me
like
You would before you said it's not that
easy
Before the fight, before I locked you out
But I take it all back now
Come back, come back, come back to me
like
You would, you would if this was a movie
Stand in the rain outside 'til I came out
Come back, come back, come back to me
like
You could, you could if you just said you're
sorry
I know that we could work it out somehow
But if this was a movie you'd be here by
now
You'd be here by now
It's not the kind of ending you wanna see
now

The Eyes In Back Of My Head

Early this morning I am outside walking along the trail-
The wind blows my hair about-
Covering THE EYES IN THE BACK OF MY HEAD-
I cannot see for the moment but I can feel-
I can feel the vibrations of heavy footsteps
Pounding against my brain in another gust of wind
Blowing my hair about- giving way to the
EYES IN THE BACK OF MY HEAD-
I recognize the intruders who wish me harm.
Early this morning
I walk along the trail- I am in danger-people are following me
One, two and three-I count the footsteps-
Four five six- I see the people-
Evil conniving and threatening- behind me and
Seven, eight, nine more slowly walking in front of me-
My anger overwhelms me and the bitter cold wind
Only exacerbates my homicidal impulses-
I am dressed to kill these people who
Walk slowly ahead of me- space invaders
Whose footsteps are retaliating and
THE EYES IN THE BACK OF MY HEAD-
Envision the whole world behind me-
Early this morning- I think of the gun shop I walked by downtown yesterday-
Ready to murder, I am- seething with rage-
Early this morning, I am walking along the trail-
I do not feel safe- I have lost my destination and
My sanity is precarious- people are all around me and
I am dressed to kill the entire multitude-
I have EYES IN BACK OF MY HEAD- I believe, and
As I count the people before me and behind me, and
As the cold wind blows my hair about- I know that
THE EYES IN BACK OF MY HEAD are protecting me and
Perhaps are keeping me safe and now I know that it is
THE EYES IN BACK OF MY HEAD whom are my saviors -
Bringing back memories of nightmarish delusions of
Threatening people in my past being God- I have no destination and
THE EYES IN BACK OF MY HEAD are my friends- and
My delusions, as others call them- are my saving grace.

A Failed Poem

This season such as the humpback shrimp;
out of the window
You brood behind overcoat
walked around
Kinofuji florets and Yuki Yanagi
but you still select a series of Mokuren
Slowly you walk on the brick
began to brittle
And look, we had been walked
a few ten years
but only quiet, silence and acceptance
I am sure
it's not a fake
'Why Mokuren? '
I asked idly, you shook your head slowly
As I wrote the poem a hundred times
you do not understand
but still you touch my old eyes
an increasingly myopic
eternal love is a mystery
Does it come from the sky
or in the flower garden
Nagai Botanical Osaka?

Goodbye

It took us a long time to part
and longer to say goodbye.
For the so few hours we ever had,
so quickly did they fly.

Separation was inevitable.
We knew it from the start
and yet we placed it in the back of our minds
and only knew the heart.

And the heart said, 'Not yet, not yet.'
as we listened to its beat.
As we touched one final time
the touch was just as sweet
as ever it had been.

We turned. We looked and slowly
wiped away our tears.
We walked into the empty future
of all the coming years.
