I Carry With Me

seems i walk alone
so much of the time....
but i carry with me

tiny slivers of hearts,
many colored splotches
of cloth woven into a blanket

that warms me against the cold.
my feet are worn... my eyes near blind...
but i see with the eyes

of small children
too alive to deny
the magic in each moment....

i breathe with the breath
of human hungering....
for what cannot be contained....

my heart beats with the spirit
of light... the hope of the hopeless,
the determination of the beaten....

the prayers of those who will not quit...
whose feet tired like mine,
keep walking!

Hearts Made Of Feet!

and so we struggle,
turning in the womb,
choked by the cord.
conceived in darkness,
becoming light!

we are hearts made of feet,
feet that walk the path.
feet that slip and fall,
feet that take the wrong turn.
feet that keep on walking,
sore, tired, hurting.
feet of desire, and purpose,
feet of soulful intent!

all the great philosophies
come to this...
feet that only stop walking
to bandage other feet;
then walk together,
leaving one set of prints!

Breathe In…breathe Out

God Breathes Life in…
You know this from first spanking

Involuntary breathing;
Regulated by a knowing body
Disrupted by emotions
Halted by trauma
Stopped by death

“Breath contains Light”

Learn to be a conscious breather;
Take in breath with awareness
Take in positive ions contained in Wind
Breathe out negative thoughts
Breathe out negative feelings

Breathe in
Breathe out

Let breath carry your prayers
Let breath voice thanksgiving
Let each breath praise God…

So Tired

Scent on a postcard
A memory left behind
Warm hand, cool look but no time...
Winsome lose some
Hung up on old flame
My heart depends on fire
So who am I to make demands on love?
...relax and walk on by
So tired
So tired
Beaten like a drum
So tired
Living life alone
So tired
Beaten like a drum
Kiss the right faces
And tap the party line
Short measure of cheap skate pleasure
Easier said than done
Sip the night water
But not too drunk to say
Well just who am I to ever hope to love you?
Id turn and shy away
So tired
So tired
Beaten like a drum
So tired
Living life alone
So tired
Beaten like a drum
Once upon a bed
You said you loved me
Once upon a bed
Those eyes of blue
Now what am I supposed to do?
So tired -
So tired
Beaten like a drum
So tired
Live my life alone, so alone
Once upon a bed
You said you loved me
Once upon a bed
Those eyes of blue
And what am I to rhyme with you?
Now I lie alone and so defenceless
Dream of love in sunny daze with you
So tired...

Under The Boardwalk

Oh the sun beats down and melts the tar up on the roof
And your shoes get so hot you wish your tired feet were fire-proof
Under the boardwalk, down by the sea
On a blanket with my baby is where Ill be
Chorus:
Under the boardwalk, out of the sun
Under the boardwalk, well be having some fun
Under the boardwalk, people walking above
Under the boardwalk, well be falling in love
Under the board-walk, board-walk
From a park you hear the happy sounds from a carousel
You can almost taste the hotdogs and french fries they sell
Under the boardwalk, down by the sea
On a blanket with my baby is where Ill be
Chorus:
Under the boardwalk, out of the sun
Under the boardwalk, well be having some fun
Under the boardwalk, people walking above
Under the boardwalk, well be falling in love
Under the board-walk, board-walk
Under the boardwalk, down by the sea
On a blanket with my baby is where Ill be
Under the boardwalk, down by the sea
On a blanket with my baby is where Ill be
On a blanket with my baby is where Ill be

Tiny Feet

A child's tiny feet,
Blue, blue with cold,
How can they see and not protect you?
Oh, my God!

Tiny wounded feet,
Bruised all over by pebbles,
Abused by snow and soil!

Man, being blind, ignores
that where you step, you leave
A blossom of bright light,
that where you have placed
your bleeding little soles
a redolent tuberose grows.

Since, however, you walk
through the streets so straight,
you are courageous, without fault.

Child's tiny feet,
Two suffering little gems,
How can the people pass, unseeing.

I Hope She Knows

i hop she knows who she is to me,
i hope she knows when i look at her true beauty is what i see
i hope she knows i see her like no one else
i hope she knows when she smiles it just makes my heart melt
i hope she knows shes not just anybody, not just some girl
shes mine,
i have loved her all this time
i hope she knows she sweetens my breathe
without her air it would bring death
i hope she knows that in my eyes
shes the brightest light, the shine of the moon in the essence of the night
the beauty of the waters on the shore, without her love i would be no more,
i hope she knows i love her the way she is
i hope she knows when shes gone shes all i miss
i hope she knows that all i have to say and all i feel
that the love for her could never be so real
i hope she knows shes the life of my life
the heart of my heart, the day of my day
and no matter how long i will forever feel this way
and this moment that im looking at her, that im looking at the most amazing thing i will ever see
her,
i hope she knows without the gaze of her eyes, i would be blind all my life
but at this moment,
i hope she knows
that i love her.

Pages in the Book

in the midnite hour 'neath the street lamp shadows,
where lifetimes come and go, and salvation follows.
and the heart stripped bare has no need to lie...
the taste of your lips, the tears that i cant cry.

with beaten hands and swords into plows;
giving all that i am, more than i can do without.
i'd trade eternity for one moment by your side...
with your hand in mine and nothing left to hide.

making love in the dirt by the cementary stones,
the yip of the dogs while the wind howls and moans.
your fingers dig into my back, i dive into your soul...
where fire was discovered, spinning out of control.

you close the book, turn the page, walk out the door,
call it all a lie, say you dont love me anymore.
the scars of passion in the shadows 'neath your eyes...
hymns of hope and redemption where the sparrow flies.

pour me a drink, light a smoke, my hat and my heart,
looking for your image in the hunger of the dark.
truth and freedom and justice dissolve into dust...
struck blind and deaf, my soul turned to rust.

down the road past the house where nobody lives.
where love looks in a mirror, repents and forgives.
every moment wasted, every word unspoken turns...
the heart beats faster, but the fire slowly burns.

kiss my lips and bury me down by the willow tree.
take this weight from my heart, set my spirit free.
in the eyes of God and time you are my destiny...
i'm nothing but a river that flows into your sea.

say no prayers, now the time of praying is past.
what's last is now first, what's first is now last...
the song of the poet dies with a fatal look...
all that we are now... pages in the book.

Dream tryst

The breaths of kissing night and day
Were mingled in the eastern Heaven,
Throbbing with unheard melody,
Shook Lyra all its star-cloud seven.
When dusk shrank cold, and light trod shy,
And dawn's grey eyes were troubled grey;
And souls went palely up to the sky,
And mine to Lucidè,
There was no change in her sweet eyes
Since last I saw those sweet eyes shine;
There was no change in her deep heart
Since last that deep heart knocked at mine.
Her eyes were clear, her eyes were Hope's,
Wherein did ever come and go;
The sparkle of the fountain drops
From her sweet soul below.
The chambers in the house of dream
Are fed with so divine an air,
That Time's hoar wings grow young therein,
And they who walk there are most fair.
I joyed for me, I joyed for her,
Who with the Past meet girt about:
Where her last kiss still warms the air,
Nor can her eyes go out.

A Moment Of You

small tiny prayers,
passing thoughts,
a moment of you....

maybe just the sunlight
sifting through the blinds,
the wind blowing a branch

against the windowpane.
the sound of the train
on the distant tracks....

the ticking of the clock
in the dead stillness.
a child laughing and talking,

walking down the road....
a sudden pain in my heart,
that lingers, then is gone.

an empty bird's nest
on the ground beside the shed....
a stray cat begging for food....

small tiny prayers...
clouds in the afternoon sky...
water dripping, an old spicket......

a moment of you!

Caught Up in Magic

You do believe in magic
You can see the eyes that watch my sleep
The spirits that would suffocate or shine
The priest issuing from his hilltop shrine
Predictions and calls that bind my actions
Forces that navigate my warring factions
Unmasking the face of my tormentors
As I cradle deep in your incantations

You say you believe in magic
I have no reason to disbelieve
And every inclination to surrender
To spells of entreaty you cast for splendour
On worn stones that make me curious
As I sit at my healer's feet
Paying him to banish deceipt
And to summon my reluctant energy

Because you are my magic
When I am bewitched, walking tightropes in my sleep
You are my architect of confidence
The amulets you bring for me to keep
In the presence of demons and accidents
Haunt me, but cannot spell defeat

I think of pain as magic
The torture weighing on our lives, suspended
Like bodies hung from ceiling rings
The load of being human, learning on this trek
That awareness is not wisdom
Fear is not unending
And the faces of angels
Do not always yield escape

I think of light as magic
And everything you show me, of who you were at birth
And all we tell each other, as ritual, repeated
Is for this light, for visions, in steady ancient eyes
That nearly blind, their images resolve
Within the heart that softens, lets us fall
Back into silence, in our depths transformed
Forgetting who we were, of only one thing sure
In the presence of this magic, whether in dark or light
Our fates remain connected and entwined.

Sonnet 76: She Comes, And Straight Therewith

She comes, and straight therewith her shining twins do move
Their rays to me, who in her tedious absence lay
Benighted in cold woe; but now appears my day,
The only light of joy, the only warmth of love.

She comes with light and warmth, which like Aurora prove
Of gentle force, so that mine eyes dare gladly play
With such a rosy morn, whose beams most freshly gay
Scorch not, but only do dark chilling sprites remove.

But lo, while I do speak, it groweth noon with me,
Her flamy glist'ring lights increase with time and place;
My heart cries, Ah, it burns; mine eyes now dazzl'd be:

No wind, no shade can cool, what help then in my case,
But with short breath, long looks, staid feet and walking head,
Pray that my sun go down with meeker beams to bed.

Flos Lunae

I would not alter thy cold eyes,
Nor trouble the calm fount of speech
With aught of passion or surprise.
The heart of thee I cannot reach:
I would not alter thy cold eyes!

I would not alter thy cold eyes;
Nor have thee smile, nor make thee weep:
Though all my life droops down and dies,
Desiring thee, desiring sleep,
I would not alter thy cold eyes.

I would not alter thy cold eyes;
I would not change thee if I might,
To whom my prayers for incense rise,
Daughter of dreams! my moon of night!
I would not alter thy cold eyes.

I would not alter thy cold eyes,
With trouble of the human heart:
Within their glance my spirit lies,
A frozen thing, alone, apart;
I would not alter thy cold eyes.

Cynicism, and Hope

as i grow older
my cynicism grows...
i've grown tired of paper kingdoms
& dreams that end
with the taste of blood in my mouth.

i do not believe that
God lives in synagogues & churches,
or in the exhortations of evangelists,
or in the rituals of priests...
or in hell-fire & damnation,
the sword of judgement, the end of time,
or in holy graves...

i see God in the eyes...
the eyes of small children,
of homeless men beneath the bridge...
in the eyes of young lovers
madly lost in each other...
in the eyes of the old woman dying
in the empty house where she raised her children...
in the eyes of the activist arrested
& confined to a cold cell for believing
in human rights...
in the eyes of the addict
whose life is lost in the hole of the memory
that the needle fills...
in the eyes of dead soldiers
forever staring into the rage of war...
in the eyes of those struggling to survive
drowning in the despair of cold reality...
in the eyes that stare at me in the night,
& wont let me sleep without feeling...
in the eyes of the dog lying faithfully at my feet,
with no need to be anywhere else...

who is this God? of form & formless,
of light and shadow, dissolving, redefining...
who's not always male, but often female!
not owned, and not owning....
like the waves that carve the shore,
& leave it nameless...
(hungry for the footprints
of human desire!)

not aloof, but immersed,
almost drunk with sadness & joy...
not bound by dwelling or canyon,
but as free as the wind
that cant be spoken!

do i believe? yes! madly! ecstatically!
in life, & stillness, & even death!
in the song that takes no prisoners,
leaving dew in the parched grass...
& in the Lover who opens & closes the door
of eternity in the human heart...

~~passion Takes Flight~~

Walk along any crowded city street
See vacant stares on a sea of human faces
How stiff they walk on frozen feet,
And long forgotten social graces

Is passion within a human heart now gone,
As far as knowing eyes can see?
Is love and joy no longer paragon?
Oh Lord, why won’t they look at me?

Thy passion “Vincent” helps them take wing,
As paint on canvas did so long ago
Lovely are the words your paintings sing,
As if by magic, vivid flowers seem to grow

Soon, God’s Hands shall touch our hearts again,
The long forgotten buried and the walking dead
Made afresh…what was once arcane
The Will and Love of God shall again embed

Countless souls shall embark on upward flight,
None shall rest until they reach Eternal Light

White Feather

(fish / marillion)
When I hit the streets back in 81
Found a heart in the gutter and a poets crown
I felt barbed wire kisses and icicle tears
Where have I been for all these years?
I saw political intrigue, political lies
Gonna wipe those smiles of self-satisfaction from their eyes
I will wear your white feather I will carry your white flag
I will swear I have no nation but Im proud to own my heart
I will wear your white feather I will carry your white flag
I will swear I have no nation but Im proud to own my heart
My heart, this is my heart
We dont need no uniforms, we have no disguise
Divided we stand, together well rise
We will wear your white feather
All the children
We will carry your white flag
We will swear we have no nations
Beirut children
But were proud to own our hearts
Jeruzalem children
We will wear your white feather
Tokio children
We will carry your white flag
Moscow children
We will swear we have no nations
Washington children
But were proud to own our hearts
Munich children
These are our hearts
Chicago children
These are our hearts
Cairo children
You cant take away our hearts ...
You cant steal our hearts away
I cant walk away I cant walk away
No more, no more, no more, no more...

Love Needs A Heart

(by lowell george, valerie carter & jackson browne)
Maybe the hardest thing Ive ever done
Was to walk away from you
Leaving behind the life that wed begun
I split myself in two
Proud and alone, cold as a stone
Rolling down that hill into the night
I could see the surprise and the hurt in your eyes
From behind each flashing city light
Love needs a heart and I need to find
If loves needs a heart like mine
Love wont come near me, she dont even hear me
She walks past my vacancy sign
Love needs a heart, trusting and blind
I wish that heart was mine
Proud and alone, cold as a stone
Im afraid to believe the things I feel
I can cry with the best I can laugh with the rest
But Im never sure when its real
And it may be the hardest thing Ive ever done
But apart from all that I hope to find
Wheres the heart thats been looking for mine?
I hope it finds me in time
Love needs a heart and I need to find
If love needs a heart like mine

25 Miles

Twenty-five miles from home, girl
My feet are hurtin mighty bad
Now Ive been walkin for three days
And two lonely nights
You know that Im mighty bad
But I got a girl waitin for me
Thats gonna make this trip worthwhile
You see, shes got the kind
Of lovin and kissin
Make a boy go stone wild
I got to keep on walkin
Oh I got to walk on
Let me tell you, yall
Im so tired
But I just cant lose my stride
I got fifteen miles to go now
And I can hear my baby callin my name
Its as if, as though
Im standin at her front door
And I can hear that doggone thing
Now Ill be so glad to see my baby
And hold her in my arms one more time
And when I kiss her lips
I turn backward flip
And I forget about these feet of mine
I got to keep on walkin
Oh I got to walk on
Let me tell you, yall
Im so tired
But I just cant lose my stride
Yeah I got to walk on
Let me tell you, yall
Hope my feet dont fail me now
I got five more miles to go
I got nine, eight, seven
Six, oh six
I got five more miles to go now
Over the hills just around the bend
Although my feet are tired
I cant lose my stride
I got to get my baby back again
I got to keep on walkin
I got to walk on
Let me tell yall
Im so tired now
But I just cant lose my stride
Oh, I got to walk on
Let me tell you now
Im so tired
But I just cant lose my stride
I got to walk on

Tandem Hearts

There is a heart that is both yours and mine,
Its beat is always in sync and in time,
It silently knows what is best,
As it thumps loudly in your chest,
It never grows or quietens with age,
Yet it always rattles your ribcage,
It beats once, then twice, then thrice,
Entrapped within your bodily vice,
But in vigour, spirit and glee,
It is always in time with me.
So our hearts are in tandem,
The beats never sporadic or random,
For you have a special magic touch,
So this is a thank you very much,
From all the hearts you have clutched,
Their hearts forever etched and touched,
By the love and friendship you do imbue,
So this is for the one and only… you!

Christmas Tiny Feet

don't you hear that beat of little tiny feet
tiny feet running across the floor
tiny feet at your door
to hear the pitter patter of those feet on christmas morn
and the twinkle in their eyes
seeing that expression of surprise
as they open up all their gifts that they put on their christmas list
this is one of the few things that make all the heartaches worth while
when you see their beautiful smile.
christmas is a day to rejoice the birth of our king
who has given us all these things.
so as we share this day with our children
let us remember who gave us this day
and thank him in every way.
rejoice in the birth of our new born king
for he is everything.
he has given us the pitter patter of tiny feet
and has made our lives complete.
