Hunger Is!
broke and busted,
wandering the streets...
with nothing but the clothes
on your back and
the shoes on your feet...
and havent eaten in two days.
the mission's closed,
no soup line today...
and you start staring at the trash cans,
behind houses, behind restaurants.
you watch people walking to their cars,
people going into stores,
hands in their pockets, or
pocketbooks on their shoulders...
just looking for a chance.
numb to the fear, to any feeling,
to the sound of sirens,
to the sound of voices talking and laughing...
and there's no right or wrong...
only then, do you know,
hunger is!

Same Man I Was Before
Im not the same man I was before
I havent changed my perception
I havent lost my protection
I havent lost, havent lost, havent lost
What I have, lost intentions
Two by two coming through the door
(singing like a bird)
Boys and girls voices joined in song
(voices in the air)
Fire crackers making so much noise
(flying in the air)
They all start yelling at me
. . . . . everything you do is wrong
Im not the same boy I was before
But Ive not changed my desires
Ive not extinguished the fires
I havent lost wide eyed wonder
I havent lost, havent lost, havent lost
The stupid fear of thunder
Two by two walking hand in hand
(walkin in the air)
The bone come marching from the promised land
(comes from everywhere)
Their voices carry like the sound of glass
(breaking on the ground)
It burns my ears when they sing
. . . . . everything you do is wrong
Im not the same ghost I was before
But I still converse with the spirits
When people talk I dont hear it
I walk through doors when no one sees me
I disappear, I disappear, disappear
Whenever it may please me

Saturday Night Streets
Saturday Night Streets
Cars driving back and forth
People of different colors walking down the streets
laughing
talking
drinking
enj oying the night
The streets are talking to me
These streets have stories
different cars, different colors
I Love these streets
I love the night
I love Saturdays
l think I'm in love with these streets
I'm in love with Saturday night streets
Mon, Tues, Wed, Thurs, Fri, Sun belongs to workers and the sun
Saturday belongs to the night, people and these streets

Envy
People envy many
things
houses, lots
diamond rings.
Fancy clothes
takes their eye.
They sit, let
time go by.
Possession position,
earthly fame
Just to have a
well-known name.
These are nice I
agree
important things
aren't bought,
they're given free.
like people laughing,
people walking
sometimes holding
hands and talking.

Vacant Eyes
standing in line
for a cup of soup,
second hand coats,
and worn out shoes.
the hands that
built your houses,
paved your roads,
worked your steel mills...
harvested your crops,
worked on your cars,
built your cities and towns,
your stores and your churches.
tremble with the cold,
hold the steaming cup
like a prayer...
wipe the corners of vacant eyes!

Houses In Motion
For a long time I felt without style or grace
Wearing shoes with no socks in cold weather
I knew my heart was in the right place
I knew Id be able to do these things.
And as we watch him digging his own grave
It is important to know that was where hes at
He cant afford to stop...that is what he believe
Hell keep on digging for a thousand years.
Im walking a line-Im thining about empty motion
Im walking a line-just barely enough to be living
Get outa the way-no time to begin
This isnt the time-so nothing was done
Not talking about-not many at all
Im turning around-no trouble at all
You notice theres nothing around you, around you
Im walking a line-divide and dissolve.
Never get to say much, never get to talk
Tell us a little bit, but not too much
Right about then, is where she give up
She has closed her eyes, she has give up hope
Im walking a line-i hate to be dreaming in motion
Im walking a line-just barely enough to be living
Get outa the way-no time to begin
This isnt the time-so nothing was done
Not talking about-not many at all
Im turning around-no trouble at all
Im keeping my fingers behind me, hind me
Im walking a line-divide and dissolve.
I turn myself around, Im moving backwards and forwards
Im moving twice as much as I was before
Ill keep on digging to the center of the earth
Ill be down in there moving the in the room...
Im walking a line-visiting houses in motion
Im walking a line-just barely enough to be living
Get outa the way-no time to begin
This isnt the time-so nothing was done
Not talking about-not many at all
Im turning around-no trouble at all
Two different houses surround you, round you
Im walking a line-divide and dissolve.

Afterglow
Just when days start getting colder
I walk the streets I never knew
There's some words I never told you
The sound rings out like the truth
And if you could see what's come over me
Then you would know
Cause I'm walking free
The wind at my back
Bathed in afterglow
And as I sit here in this dark room
All I seem to feel is light
And I see color
I see the ruin
Of the blood in this life that's ours
And if you could see what's come over me
Then you would know
Cause I'm walking free
The wind at my back
Bathed in after
Watch the sun it paints an orange sky
Lay me down and feel the days gone by
Just when the day, Just when the day
Just when the days start getting longer
I walk the streets I never knew
The sun comes out for you
And if you could see whats come over me
Then you would know
Cause I'm walking free
The wind at my back
And bathed in after
As I'm walking free
The wind at my back
I'm bathed in afterglow

Watching The World Go Past
I sit on the front step
Just watching the world go past
People walking
People talking
I see people running from themselves
People walking their best friends
Children playing with others hearts
Teenage girls crying over the past
I just and watch the sun set
Signalling that a new day will begin soon
I watch the rising of the moon
And the dots getting ever so brighter
Watch people fall in love
People smile as if nothings wrong
I watch all the people who have nothing to do
Watching people who have nothing to loose
I sit and watch the different lives form
Watching the new scene starting
The new lives beginning with a smile
The lives coming to and end
I sit on the front step
Just watching the world go past
People walking
People talking

The Small People!
it is then...
the small people,
common men and women,
who by their hands built this dream,
who plowed the fields,
paved the roadways...
who picked your fruit,
who built your small businesses.
who worked your factories and mills.
who built your homes and churches.
who drove your trucks, who fixed your cars,
who made your clothes and your furniture.
who worked for too little
to make you too rich....
who hauled your trash,
who wiped your asses.
who worked as cashiers, clerks, and salesmen.
who covered for you when you were sick,
yet worked when they were sick.
who laid your bricks, who cut your logs,
who stocked your grocery stores.
who dug your graves and fought your damn wars,
the small people, that you throw away!
no jobs, no work, no benefits, no insurance...
no medical care, no cars...
no lights, no rent, no food, no shelter...
no name, no reason to be!
the small people...
too old, too tired, too angry, too used up.
self taught, no degree, experience doesnt count.
the small people....
pushed into a corner,
stacked in the alleyways.
broken wheels turning on broken glass.
the small people....
staring back from your mirror,
from the darkness outside your window.
the small people...
who are not going
to take it anymore!

You've Got to Notice...
You've got to notice...
Something's wrong about these times.
You've got to notice...
People clearly out of their minds.
You've got to watch.Your back.
And every little step you take.
You can not stop.To drop...
A point of view someone will take,
And hate...you!
You've got to notice...
Something's wrong about these times.
You've got to notice...
People clearly out of their minds.
You can not smile. Or nod. Or say hello,
'Have a good day! '
You may regret.Someone you've met.
Then get upset.
When they just turn, and walk away!
That's how it is today.
You've got to notice...
Something's wrong about these times.
You've got to notice...
People clearly out of their minds.
You've got to watch.Your back.
And every little step you take.
You can not stop.To drop...
A point of view someone will take,
And hate with such rage....displayed.
People are in a rage.
Today...
People are in a rage.
Today...
People are quick to rage.
And getting crazier...
Every day.
Today...
People are quick to rage.
And getting crazier...
Every day.
Don't stop. Don't stop!
Pat your feet to the beat...
Repeat!
People are in a rage.
Today...
People are in a rage.
Today...
People are quick to rage.
And getting crazier...
Every day.
You've got to notice...
Something's wrong about these times.
You've got to notice...
People clearly out of their minds.
You've got to watch.Your back.
And every little step you take.
You can not stop.To drop...
A point of view someone will take,
And hate...you!
You can not smile. Or nod. Or say hello,
'Have a good day! '
You'll be hated anyway...
Today.
People are in a rage.
Today...
People are in a rage.
Today...
People are quick to rage.
And getting crazier...
Each and every day.
Today...
People are in a rage.
Today...
People are quick to rage.
And getting crazier...
Every day.
Don't stop. Don't stop!
Pat your feet to the beat...
Repeat!
Snap or pop your fingers,
As you hip hop down the streets.
Today!
People display such a craze!
And it seems to be 'okay',
This way!

Diamonds On The Soles Of Her Shoes
(a-wa) o kodwa u zo-nge li-sa namhlange
(a-wa a-wa) si-bona kwenze ka kanjani
(a-wa a-wa) amanto mbazane ayeza
Shes a rich girl
She dont try to hide it
Diamonds on the soles of her shoes
Hes a poor boy
Empty as a pocket
Empty as a pocket with nothing to lose
Sing ta na na
Ta na na na
She got diamonds on the soles of her shoes
She got diamonds on the soles of her shoes
Diamonds on the soles of her shoes
Diamonds on the soles of her shoes
People say shes crazy
She got diamonds on the soles of her shoes
Well thats one way to lose these
Walking blues
Diamonds on the soles of her shoes
She was physically forgotten
Then she slipped into my pocket
With my car keys
She said youve taken me for granted
Because I please you
Wearing these diamonds
And I could say oo oo oo
As if everybody knows
What Im talking about
As if everybody would know
Exactly what I was talking about
Talking about diamonds on the soles of her shoes
She makes the sign of a teaspoon
He makes the sign of a wave
The poor boy changes clothes
And puts on after-shave
To compensate for his ordinary shoes
And she said honey take me dancing
But they ended up by sleeping
In a doorway
By the bodegas and the lights on
Upper broadway
Wearing diamonds on the soles of their shoes
And I could say oo oo oo
As if everybody here would know
What I was talking about
I mean everybody here would know exactly
What I was talking about
Talking about diamonds
People say Im crazy
I got diamonds on the soles of my shoes
Well thats one way to lose
These walking blues
Diamonds on the soles of your shoes

Fire Tonight
Well, theres a hot wind blowing tonight in the east,
And I heard that the park is filled tonight with police.
On the radio theres nothing but a man saying
To stay inside.
Well, I remember what you said on the telephone,
That you didnt feel like it was safe to stay alone.
And you would get yourself to me if you could find
A way across the line.
But theres fire tonight on your side of town,
Orange light in the sky without a sound.
Fire tonight on your side of town.
I watch and wait for you to come around.
Well, theres a faint sound of sirens tonight in the air,
And I heard that the downtown streets tonight are bare.
On the tv here theyre telling me the roads are all
Closed down.
You said that if you couldnt take the car youd walk
Instead.
It was the last thing you said before the line went dead.
And now Im waiting by the window holding all the things
Of yours Ive found.
But theres fire tonight on your side of town,
Orange light in the sky without a sound.
Fire tonight on your side of town.
I watch and wait for you to come around.
I know we always said that we were free.
I know we never thought this would succeed.
But now your face is all that I can see.
But theres fire tonight on your side of town,
Orange light in the sky without a sound.
Fire tonight on your side of town.
I watch and wait for you to come around.

Homeless
nowhere to go...
from bridge to alley,
maybe a tent.
barrel fire, robbing the trash,
a little something to eat
that nobody else wanted...
panhandle a cup of coffee,
maybe bum a smoke...
hope to hell it dont snow today.
the shelter's full,
the soup kitchen aint open yet....
nowhere to go.
houses with curtains & plates
give way to vacant buildings....
children's voices echo the sound
of rats scurrying in the dark...
no woman, no God...
only an old half-blind
stray dog
following, following....
nowhere to go...

I Hate Myself And Want To Die (Outtake '92)
Runny nose and runny yolk
Even if you have a cold still
You can cough on me again
I still havent had my fulfill
In the someday what's that sound?
In the someday what's that sound?
In the someday what's that sound?
In the someday what's that sound?
Broken heart and broken bones
Think of how a castrated horsefeels
One more quirky cliche'd phrase
You're the one I wanna refill
In the someday what's that sound?
In the someday what's that sound?
In the someday what's that sound?
In the someday what's that sound?
most people don't realize
that two large pieces of coral,
painted brown, and attached tohis skull
with common wood screws can makea child look like a deer
In the someday what's that sound?
In the someday what's that sound?
In the someday what's that sound?
In the someday what's that sound?
Runny nose and runny yolk
Even if you have a cold still
You can cough on me again
I still havent had my fulfill
In the someday what's that sound?
In the someday what's that sound?
In the someday what's that sound?
In the someday what's that sound

Pretty Girl Now Passing
Look so pretty you
no sound floats
out of my mouth
as I sit silent now
staring through you
boring in
wondering
what it is that
does this
to me now
and every time
I see you still
just out walking
talking
laughing with him

What.... (If Not To Listen...)
what are we here for then
if not to listen...
to words spoken by the longing heart,
to the sound and inflections of suffering,
to the very heartbeat of need.
to the human cry against injustice,
to the song of freedom
borne by an angry wind...
to listen...
to the soft cry of the newborn baby,
to the moan of lovers entwined.
to the hum of the tractor,
and the thud of the axe.
to the hope of the hammer pounding nails.
to the voices of people choosing dialogue,
to the honest plea for forgiveness...
to listen...
to the song of the mockingbird,
the bark of the dog,
the meow of the cat...
to the marching chant of the ants.
to the sound of the butterfly's wings,
rhyming infinity!
to listen...
to the stillness in our own heartbeats.
for the name we had before birth.
to the prayers of clouds and trees.
for the sound of the Lover's footsteps.
to the ancient wisdom of mountains,
the forever birth of the rivers.
for the voice we've followed throughout time...
to listen...
for the bowls of hunger being filled.
for the silence after gunfire ends.
for the sound of hands joining ours.
for the sound of feet walking beside!

Shopping at the Mall
People! Me, looking at People.
People, looking at me.
Old people, trying to look young.
Young people, trying to look old.
Walking, talking, laughing people.
fuzzy, frowsy, sober people.
tipsy, tip-toesy, striding people.
people's people.
Walking in protective units
of sobriety and gaiety,
merriment, wonder, and awe.
All kinds of people.

Go For Broke
My life is runnin like a stock car race
High speed and lots of curves
Keep the pedal to the metal, win or lose
But dont lose your nerve
Some people live in fear
If you can call that living
Im gonna keep my ass in gear
And take the chance Im given
Im gonna go for broke, play to win
Do or die, just dont give in
Take a shot, roll the dice
Dont look back, just go for broke
My love is spinning like a steering wheel
Just grab it and hold on tight
Feel the power in your hands
Take me right to the edge tonight
Some people love in vain
If you can call that lovin
So lets hit the streets again
Its all or nothin
Chorus
Standing on the razors edge
But Im not going under
Every night Im on the line
Livin like my days are numbered

Blue Island Intersection
Six streets come together here.
They feed people and wagons into the center.
In and out all day horses with thoughts of nose-bags,
Men with shovels, women with baskets and baby-buggies.
Six ends of streets and no sleep for them all day.
The people and wagons come and go, out and in.
Triangles of banks and drug stores watch.
The policemen whistle, the trolly cars bump:
Wheels, wheels, feet, feet, all day.
In the false dawn when the chickens blink
And the east shakes a lazy baby toe at tomorrow,
And the east fixes a lazy pink half-eye this way,
In the time when only one milk wagon crosses
These three streets, these six street ends,
It is the sleep time and they rest.
The triangle banks and the drug stores rest.
The policeman is gone, his star and gun sleep.
The owl car blutters along in a sleep walk.

No Fixed Abode
Around the streets, some people pace;
Others sit in doorways and stare into space.
With nothing to do and nowhere to go,
Days seem to drag and time goes slow.
Their daily lives hold little direction;
They're prone to illness and infection.
Their dowdy clothes are full of dust and dirt;
Their eyes are full of hunger and deep down hurt.
Aromas from restaurants waft through the air,
Making pangs of hunger much harder to bear.
Their bellies grumble due to a lack of food;
Remembering better times, they sit and brood.
Some want money for food, drink or drugs;
Some just want love, and they just want a hug.
Amidst the city's seemingly never-ending din,
Many scavenge for their food in rubbish bins.
To ask for money, some seize their chance:
They get ignored or receive a cutting glance.
Like you and I, these people have feelings,
But the sight of them leaves some people reeling.
The lucky few head to a hostel for the night;
Others bed-down in doorways: a sorry old sight.
Those left on the streets do their best to sleep,
But klaxons wail loudly and car horns beep.
Each day and night, they struggle to survive;
In present circumstances, they cannot thrive.
Once upon a time, these people had pride,
But, from the world, they now want to hide.

Humankind
Humankind, its not fair, why should we all live in fear
Humankind, its a test, to see whos the very best
Humankind, dont know why, no one cares who lives or dies
Humankind, dont look at me, look at yourself, what do you see
People - always tellin lies, they can keep their alibi
People - knockin at my door, how come they want more and more
People - talkin behind your back, most of them drive a gadillac
People - staring at your clothes - I cant take it anymore, no more
Humankind, its a shame, some dont even know their name
Humankind are so strange, some need to be rearranged
Humankind, dont know why, no one cares who lives or dies.
Humankind, dont look at me, look at yourself, what do you see
People - always tellin lies, they can keep their alibi
People - knockin at my door, how come they want more and more
People - talkin behind your back, most of them drive a gadillac
People - staring at your clothes - I cant take it anymore, no more
Tell me, tell me, whos to blame, for people acting this way
Tell me, tell me, whats so wrong, if humans just got along
Tell me, tell me, tell me please, if psychiatric help is
What we nedd - (oh)
People - always tellin lies, they can keep their alibi
People - knockin at my door, how come they want more and more
People - talkin behind your back, most of them drive a gadillac
People - staring at your clothes - I cant take it anymore,
People - yeah
People - yeah
