Epilogue (Part Two)

picked up late summer,
convict pipe streets,
cuffed and stuffed,
tagged and thrown
into a cell of fourteen.

plaster walls,
cold iron bars,
playing poker for smokes.
drunks, thieves,
an axe murderer no one spoke.

and crazy old Walt,
spinning stories for all.
town barber, church deacon,
came home to find his wife
in bed with a friend.

had been drunk ever since,
more time in than out.
still said a prayer
when he thought that
no one could see.

watered down coffee,
grey food on metal plates.
sometimes a scuffle,
usually just words.
time passed in an opium dream.

looking through the bars,
out the lone window.
i watched the leaves turn,
then fall,
as the days grew shorter.

now those leaves have turned,
the same or different,
no matter.
and freedom seems as far,
behind the bars of my life!

Iron Bars Of Mine

I stand behind these old iron bars,
To see the things, that I can see
I see a world that is changing everyday,
A world, that will not wait for me.
Behind these iron bars where I must lay,
Behind these bars where I must stay.

In this world where I am alone
Its a world that I helped build,
I make not the laws for how I live,
Time for me, she is held still.
As tomorrow is the same as it is today,
And today is the same, as yesterday.

Behind these bars, its where I am
It is the place where I sit and lie,
My destiny for me has already been chose,
For this is the place where I will die.
When the youth of mine turns into old,
When the dewdrops of dreams turn into snow.

The world that I made out of iron and stone
Where freedom and life is locked away
Where life is a waste, and living a haste,
It is where myself alone will forever stay.
Days and years for me, I have no care.
My only solitude, is sleep and prayer.

My day for me; she will someday come
When from my bars I am allowed to leave,
I will welcome that day with open arms and hope,
As those iron bars, will close behind me..
And for that day I will constantly pray,
As I leave those bars, for the bars of my a grave.

Stone Walls

Written by - Jim Croce
It's been too many years inside this prison
Too many years just for one little fight
He got what was comin'
And I think I served enough time
I'm goin' home tonight
That stone looks mighty cold
And the guard that walks that wall
Is just waitin' to get a convict in his sights
But if I can clear the top
You can bet I'll never stop
Cause I'm goin' home tonight
Chorus:
Because stone walls do a prison
Make iron bars a cage
Any man who says they don't
Never been inside
Cause in time the bars get closer
And at night the walls grow tighter
Do you feel like there's a shackle around your mind?
Now those guards are on my tail
I can hear those sirens wail
But I know that I'll get away and that I'll be alright
Cause I'd rather live on the run
Stand free in the morning sun
Then to spend another lonely prison night
Chorus

No One Knows My Plan

In my prison cell I think these words
I was careless
I can see that now
I must be silent
Must contain my secret smile
I want to tell you
You my mirror
You my iron bars
When I made a shadow on my window shade
They called the police and testified
But theyre like the people chained up in the cave
In the allegory of the people in the cave by the greek guy
No one understands
No one knows my plan
Why the dancing, shouting
Why the shrieks of pain
The lovely music
Why the smell of burning autumn leaves
No one understands
No one knows my plan
Why the dancing, shouting
Why the shrieks of pain
The lovely music
Why the smell of burning autumn leaves
In my prison cell I bide my time
Always thinking
Always busy cooking up an angle
Working on the tiny blueprint of the angle
Sketching out the burning autumn leaves
No one understands
No one knows my plan
I must be silent, must contain my secret smile
I want to tell you
You my mirror
You my iron bars
No one understands
No one knows my plan

Mamie

Mamie beat her head against the bars of a little Indiana town and dreamed of romance and big things off somewhere the way the railroad trains all ran.
She could see the smoke of the engines get lost down where the streaks of steel flashed in the sun and when the newspapers came in on the morning mail she knew there was a big Chicago far off, where all the trains ran.
She got tired of the barber shop boys and the post office chatter and the church gossip and the old pieces the band played on the Fourth of July and Decoration Day
And sobbed at her fate and beat her head against the bars and was going to kill herself
When the thought came to her that if she was going to die she might as well die struggling for a clutch of romance among the streets of Chicago.
She has a job now at six dollars a week in the basement of the Boston Store
And even now she beats her head against the bars in the same old way and wonders if there is a bigger place the railroads run to from Chicago where maybe there is
romance
and big things
and real dreams
that never go smash.

Hubert's 78th Dream

He leaves, I ignore
Her and get drunk
Drinkin rum. She
Leaves, I get drunk
I try to help
Th mother serve
the food to the kids
But I keep dropping
Food and plates.
So I just get drunk
And take my time
Washing the dishes.

Prisoner

I'm not a prisoner
I just can't be
Waiting every Tuesday to tune into tv
Being hypnotized by the stars
while they take away our rights to put us right behind bars

I can't be a prisoner
there's no way
Hey did you know I'm on their prescription drugs so that way
I can be a Slave to their political ways and not notice
The subliminal waves to be controlled and locked up and put away

I'm also eating a lot isn't that weird
fat, lazy and have no drive to vote
But hey I'll take a douhble cheeseburgers without fear

No I'm not a prisoner I'm bright
But wait if my government does take away my rights
Will I fight?
Probably not cause I'm scarred, what if I get hauled off to jail
freedom of assemble Seems to fail
and what the hell
am I doing
I'm losing my train of thought is it the ADHD
Or is the man trying to control me.

I'm not prisoner
ok I admit it
I'm fat, stupid and addicted to these figments
On TV and oh I like the pills they gave me
I really don't care about anything

I'm finally a prisoner
I'm regretting never paying attention
These metal bars really put reality into perspective
Controlled by a system today
Learn your facts
or get picked up, cuffed and locked away

The Sloth

They call me the sloth
Way down in the ghetto
Italian Spaghetti
Singing falsetto
Sleeping all day
Rip Van Winklin'
Spend my nights in bars
Glasses tinklin'
I'm so bad
He's so nasty
Ain't got no friends
Real outcasty
Stay out of my way
Or you'll end up a cripple
I'll take this piece of paper
And slice you in the nipple
[repeat first verse]
Colonel Forbin stared at the fourteen bars that stood at the end of the cell. He ran his hand across the cold, damp dungeon wall and thought again about the door. He had traveled through the door out of necessity. Once he knew it existed, he simply couldn't leave it alone. Just like Wilson. Just like Tela. Just like Errand Wolfe. And he sat in the dungeon, and he realized that he was back again; through the door. And through the tiny window in the corner of his cell, he heard the distant strains...
Errand... Errand... Errand... Errand...
And from atop the mountain Icculus looked down on all that went on below him. And he smiled...

Am I Ever Gonna Fall In Love In Nyc?

When I finally got my wish to work in new york city,
It isnt everything that I hoped it would be,
? , lonely eye, gazing at the city tops,
Wondering if there isnt someone in there just for me,
Am I ever gonna fall in love in new york city?
Will I ever find a home so far from tenassee?
Theres no future in the single bars, nothing but the one night stars,
Am I ever gonna fall in love in new york city?
My ambition and wish ?
But Im missin the tradition,
Everybody in a hurry,
No ones got the time and no ones got the time of day.
Am I ever gonna fall in love in new york city?
Will I ever find a home so far from tenassee?
Theres no future in the single bars, nothing but the one night stars,
Am I ever gonna fall in love in new york city?
One city isnt pretty if you see it on your own,
Its a fabulous place ?
Theres no one I know to cherish, no one I can hug, and no one around ? day.
Am I ever gonna fall in love in new york city?
Will I ever find a home so far from tenassee?
Theres no future in the single bars, nothing but the one night stars,
Am I ever gonna fall in love in new york city?
Am I ever gonna fall in love in new york city?
Will I ever find a home so far from tenassee?
Theres no future in the single bars, nothing but the one night stars,

Watching the seasons

Behind these bars
Children wear thick clothes
Snowflakes land on their noses
They create little snow angels
Snowmen and snowballs
Christmas trees alight
Angels on top of them
It is Winter

Behind these bars
I watch the flowers bloom
Snow melts away
Birds chirping and singing
Lovers hold each other tight
Buds open and grow
Sweet smells conquer the air
It is Spring

Behind these bars
The sun watches over
People change their clothes
They sit at the beach
The farmers harvest their crops
Crop and farmer sharing secrets
Whispering in the heat
It is Summer

Behind these bars
Leaves dance all the world's dances
The nude trees shiver in the wind
People drag their umbrellas
Struggle cleaning their leaves
Thousand referees whistling
The howling wolves unleashed
It is Autumn

Behind these bars
Snowflakes are my family
Flowers are my perfume
Wind is my music
Thank you judge and jury
For I will die here
Watching the seasons

This Is The Life For Me

(wade hayes/chick rains)
I was born in oklahoma in 1969
My daddy played the honky tonks
Out on the county line
One night he took me with him
Through those swingin doors
And I heard that country music
Saw that crowded dance floor
Dad made fifty dollars
And I stayed up til three
And I thought
This is the life for me
By the time I turned fourteen
I was pickin lead guitar
Everyday I went to school
And at night I played the bars
Two or three years later
I noticed something strange
All the looks that I was gettin
From the girls began to change
I knew right then and there
What I was gonna be
This is the life for me
This is the life
The only one I want to know
Everyday another town
And every night another show
Ever since I was a boy
Ive had this crazy dream
Now I know it was meant to be
This is the life
This is the life for me
Well I tried to go to college
Just to see if I was wrong
But that aint the kind of knowledge
That helps you write a country song
I got my education on the wild side of life
Through a cloud of smoke so thick
That you could cut it with a knife
There was no doubt about it
As far as I could see
This is the life for me
This is the life
The only one I want to know
Everyday another town
And every night another show
Ever since I was a boy
Ive had this crazy dream
Now I know it was meant to be
This is the life
This is the life for me
Yeah this is the life
This is the life for me.

Static

I got a girl in sault ste. marie
Takes a bus every weekend just to come across the miles to me
Leaves her room in the shadow of the bridge
To spend two days life blind in my dirty bed
Doesnt asks questions, never talks down
About the things I do when she isnt around
Yeah I just about live in the bars around town
I lose myself in the voice of the crowd
Each and every day I need static
I dont wanna go home alone
I know a girl just outside of lacrosse
She meets me in milwaukee when the weather gets humid and hot
She leaves her husband and retarded baby girl
Just to walk for a while unencumbered in an easier world
No questions, never asks why
I walk the floor in the middle of the night and stare
Out the window of an ugly motel
At the neon signs outside
Think about the hell I sell
To make my static
I dont wanna go home, I dont wanna go home
I dont wanna go home alone...
Got a girl in saux st. marie
Takes a bus every weekend just to come across the miles to me
Leaves her room in the shadow of the bridge
Just to spend two days life blind in my dirty bed
Doesnt asks questions, never talks down
About the life I lead when she isnt around
Yeah, I just about live in the bars around town
Lose myself in the voice of the crowd
Walk around stupid and blind and proud
Each and every day I need static
I dont wanna go home alone...
I dont wanna go home

Hallowed Be Thy Name

I'm waiting in my cold cell when the bell begins to chime
Reflecting on my past life and it doesn't have much time
Cos at 5 o'clock they take me to the Gallows Pole
The sands of time for me are running low
When the priest comes to read me the last rites
I take a look through the bars at the last sights
Of a world that has gone very wrong for me
Can it be there's some sort of error
Hard to stop the surmounting terror
Is it really the end not some crazy dream
Somebody please tell me that I'm dreaming
It's not so easy to stop from screaming
But words escape me when I try to speak
Tears they flow but why am I crying
After all I am not afraid of dying
Don't believe that there is never an end
As the guards march me out to the courtyard
Someone calls from a cell "God be with you"
If there's a God then why has he let me die?
As I walk all my life drifts before me
And though the end is near I'm not sorry
Catch my soul cos it's willing to fly away
Mark my words please believe my soul lives on
Please don't worry now that I have gone
I've gone beyond to see the truth
When you know that your time is close at hand
maybe then you'll begin to understand
Life down there is just a strange illusion.

Lost Horizons

The last horizons I can see are filled with bars and factories
And in them all we fight to stay awake...
Drink enough of anything to make this world look new again
Drunk drunk drunk in the gardens and the graves
She had nothing left to say so she said she loved me
I stood there grateful for the lie...
Drink enough of anything to make this girl look new again
Drunk drunk drunk in the gardens and the graves
Turn summer trees to bones and ice
Turn insect songs against the night
With words we build and words we break
Im drunk drunk drunk in the gardens and the graves...
Drink enough of anything to make myself look new again
Drunk drunk drunk in the gardens and the graves

Summer Dawn

Pray but one prayer for me 'twixt thy closed lips,
Think but one thought of me up in the stars.
The summer night waneth, the morning light slips,
Faint and grey 'twixt the leaves of the aspen, betwixt the cloud-bars
That are patiently waiting there for the dawn:
Patient and colourless, though Heaven's gold
Waits to float through them along with the sun.
Far out in the meadows, above the young corn,
The heavy elms wait, and restless and cold
The uneasy wind rises; the roses are dun;
Through the long twilight they pray for the dawn,
Round the lone house in the midst of the corn,
Speak but one word to me over the corn,
Over the tender, bow'd locks of the corn.

Invisible Bars

It's not prison bars in front of my face
that take my freedom away.
It's people that want to control the world
that won't let my freedom stay.

It's not a cage that traps me inside
and won't allow me to fly.
It's the powerful ones that always hide
just waiting for me to die.

7 billion bodies now on this earth
and most of them aren't free.
It's a tragic play for most of us
that turned into a comedy.

But then the stage was always set
before we came to this place
to take my freedom away from me
with invisible bars before my face.

Guitar Song

I feel bad
And beautiful
In all the strangest places
You feel good
Youre sweetest
The weathers changing as I look at your face
Falling
Fall to the floor
Falling
You know we can
Havent had a dream in such a long time now
Its raining here and all the leaves are on the ground
But Im safe and warm outside its cold and grey
Thats my guitar and I will play for you all day
So many songs
In my mind
Maybe less cause Ive drunk so much wine
Theres light
In your eyes
But out the window its gone dark outside
Falling
Fall to the floor
Falling
You know we can
Havent had a dream in such a long time now
Its raining here and all the leaves are on the ground
But Im safe and warm outside its cold and grey
Thats my guitar and I will play for you all day
Havent had a dream in such a long time now
Its raining here and all the leaves are on the ground
But Im safe and warm outside its cold and grey
Thats my guitar and I will play for you all day
Itll be alright
If you stay tonight
Havent had a dream in such a long time now
Its raining here and all the leaves are on the ground
But Im safe and warm outside its cold and grey
