Ella Wheeler Wilcox

A Grey Mood

As we hurry away to the end, my friend,
Of this sad little farce called existence,
We are sure that the future will bring one thing,
And that is the grave in the distance.
And so when our lives run along all wrong,
And nothing seems real or certain,
We can comfort ourselves with the thought (or not)
Of that spectre behind the curtain.

But we haven’t much time to repine or whine,
Or to wound or jostle each other;
And the hour for us each is to-day, I say,
If we mean to assist a brother.
And there is no pleasure that earth gives birth,
But the worry it brings is double;
And all that repays for the strife of life,
Is helping some soul in trouble.

I tell you, if I could go back the track
To my life’s morning hour,
I would not set forth, seeking name or fame,
Or that poor bauble called power.
I would be like the sunlight, and live to give;
I would lend, but I would not borrow;
Nor would I be blind and complain of pain,
Forgetting the meaning of sorrow.

This world is a vaporous jest at best,
Tossed off by the gods in laughter;
And a cruel attempt at wit were it
If nothing better came after.
It is reeking with hearts that ache and break,
Which we ought to comfort and strengthen,
As we hurry away to the end, my friend,
And the shadows behind us lengthen.

A Tumbler Of Claret

I poured out a tumbler of Claret,
Of course with intention to drink,
And, holding it up in the sunlight,
I paused for a moment to think.
I really can't tell you what made me;
I never had done so before,
Though for years, every day at my dinner,
I had emptied one tumbler or more.

'A friend' in the loneliest hours,
'A companion,' I called the red wine,
And sometimes I poetized slightly,
And called it a 'nectar divine.'
But to-day as I gazed at the claret,
That sparkled and glowed in the sun,
I asked it, 'What have you done for me,
That any true friend would have done?

'You have given me some pleasant feelings,
But they always were followed by pain.
You have given me ten thousand headaches,
And are ready to do it again.
You have set my blood leaping and bounding,
Which, though pleasant, was hurtful, no doubt,
And, if I keep up the acquaintance,
I am sure you will give me the gout.

'I remember a certain occasion,
When you caused me to act like a fool.
And, yes, I remember another
When you made me fall into a pool.
And there was Tom Smithers-you killed him!
Will Howard you made a poor knave.
Both my friends! and I might count a
dozen

You have sent to the prison or grave.

'Is this like a loyal friend's treatment?
And are you deserving the name?
Say! what do you give those who love you
But poverty, sorrow, and shame?
A few paltry moments of pleasure,
And ages of trouble and grief.
No wonder you blush in the sunlight,
You robber, you liar, you thief!

'I will have nothing more to do with you,
From this moment, this hour, this day.
To send you adrift, bag and baggage,
I know is the only safe way.'
And I poured out that tumbler of claret,
Poured it
out
, and not
down
, on the spot.
And all this you see was accomplished,
By a few sober moments of thought.

Where Could I Go But To The Lord

Living below in this old sinful world
Hardly a comfort can afford
Striving alone to face temptations call
Where could I go to the lord
Where could I go where could I go
Seeking a refuge for my soul
Needing a friend to help me in the end
Where could I go to the lord
Neighbors are fun I love them everyone
We get along in sweet accord
But when I pass the chilling hand of death
Where could I go to the lord
Where could I go where could I go
Seeking a refuge for my soul
Needing a friend to help me in the end
Where could I go to the lord
Life here is grand with friends I love so well
Comfort I get from gods own word
But when my soul needs manna from above
Where could I go to the lord
Where could I go where could I go
Seeking a refuge for my soul
Needing a friend to help me in the end
Where could I go to the lord
Where could I go where could I go
Seeking a refuge for my soul
Needing a friend to help me in the end
Where could I go to the lord
Where could I go to the lord

Frinds Just Seem To Know

Friends always make me smile
They brighten up my day
They have that special magic
To chase the blues away

The road of life is long
We can’t all be strong
But in times when we feel weak
The comfort of a friend we seek

If your friend is true
They’ll never turn you away
They’ll stand right beside you
Any time of any day

A friend just seems to know
When you have a troubled mind
For you they’ll always give
Any amount of time

A friend just seems to know
When to be a friend
They’ll always reach out for you
With a helping hand to lend

The Power Of Love

Love lives and gives itself to us all!
Love lives and gives itself to us all!
Teaching us what to do!
Helping us every hour!
Yes, that's through the power, the power of love!

Love grows and throws itself to the wind!
Love grows and throws itself to the wind!
Then it heads for your mind!
Then it aims for your heart!
Yes, that's just the start, the start of love!

Love glides and slides itself in your soul!
Love glides and slides itself in your soul!
That's how it fills your dreams!
That's how it makes you strong!
So welcome the song, the song of love!

Love cares and shares itself with the world!
Love cares and shares itself with the world!
That's why it fills your thoughts -
Seeking some sacrifice!
Yes, that's called the price, the price of love!

Love lives and gives itself to us all!
Love lives and gives itself to us all!
Teaching us what to do!
Helping us every hour!
Yes, that's through the power, the power of love!

Teaching us what to do!
Helping us every hour!
Yes, that's through the power, the power of love!

Poor Soul

Poor soul, why have you chosen this body,
decided to dwell in me? A human being
while you could have had anybody
and you could have inhabited a more divine thing?

Yet you those someone on this sinful planet called earth
a mere speck in the entire universe
and from my very birth
had to struggle in a world perverse

from what it had been designed to be
and what will you inhabit when
time and destiny brings a end to me
and where will you be then?

Or will you just vanish with the thing called life,
fading into the naught without strive?

I Am

Am
I know not whence I came,
I know not whither I go;
But the fact stands clear that I am here
In this world of pleasure and woe.
And out of the mist and the murk
Another truth shines plain –
It is my power each day and hour
To add to its joy or its pain.

I know that the earth exists,
It is none of my business why;
I cannot find out what it’s all about,
I would but waste time to try.
My life is a brief, brief thing,
I am here for a little space,
And while I stay I would like, if I may,
To brighten and better the place.

The trouble, I think, with us all
Is the lack of a high conceit.
If each man thought he was sent to this spot
To make it a bit more sweet,
How soon we could gladden the world,
How easily right all wrong,
If nobody shirked, and each one worked
To help his fellows along!

Cease wondering why you came –
Stop looking for faults and flaws;
Rise up to-day in your pride and say,
‘I am part of the First Great Cause!
However full the world,
There is room for an earnest man.
It had need of me, or I would not be –
I am here to strengthen the plan.’

Victorious Living

My friend all Believers need to grow, in their Savior whom they know,
For when troubles do abound, you need a faith that’s sure and sound.
As many people believe my friend, however saving faith isn’t the end,
The enemy prowls each day and hour, looking for men he can devour.

We need to be close to God’s side, where in His shadow we can hide,
And as you walk close to The Lord, The Holy Spirit can use you more.
To comfort a dear friend or a brother, one who’s been hurt by another,
Taking them to God’s healing place, that’s in the shadow of His Grace.

God did much more for us when, through His Son we were Born Again,
He want’s us now to walk with Him, The One who died for all of our sin.
To walk with Christ in God’s Love, filled with the knowledge from above,
Knowledge from The Eternal Source, to help us stay His narrow course.

All things we can truly do, through Christ who strengthens me and you,
God helps us walk a higher plane, gaining power through Christ’s name.
Power men receive from Jesus Christ, who died to give men a New Life,
So against the devil we can stand, when we fully rely on the Son of Man.

He who is in you is Greater than, the one who is in this world my friend,
But we need to tap The Spirit’s power, daily friend each and every hour,
And this as we allow The Word of God, to light the pilgrim paths we trod.
Only then can we live in Victory, through the One who died you and me.

Hard Road

Old men crying, young men dying
World still turns as father time looks on, on and on
Children playing, dreamers praying
Laughter turns to tear as love has gone, has it gone?
Oh, its a hard road
Oh, its a hard road
Whirlwind churning, lovers learning
On this path of life we cant back down, is it wrong?
Widows weeping, babies sleeping
Life becomes the singer and the song, sing along
Oh, its a hard road
Carry your own load
Why make the hard road?
Why cant we be friends?
No need to hurry
Well meet in the end
Why make the hard road?
Why cant we be friends?
No need to worry
Lets sing it again
Brothers sharing, mothers caring
Nightime falling victim to the dawn, shadows small
Days are crawling, time is calling
To the earth that not that life has gone, love line drawn
Oh, its a hard road
Carry your own load
Oh, its a hard road
Oh, its a hard road...
Were living in sorrow, were living the best
And look to the future, 'cause life goes together now
Were living in sorrow, were living the best
And look to the future, 'cause life goes together now
Were living in sorrow, were living the best
And look to the future, 'cause life goes together now...

Hurry up! Hurry up! Hurry up!

Hurry up to fall in love!

Be surprised how beautiful it is!

Hurry up to speak of love!

Realize that these words can anyone please.

To give yourself to others –

What happiness it is!

All people are sisters and brothers

Take care of friendship, please!

Don’t hide the feelings of admiration!

It’s a foundation of love creation.

Use your brain but more imagination

If you want to find the right station.

Hurry up to be needed by someone!

Don’t suffer of senseless doubts!

Everyone on the Earth needs love,

No one wants the bailouts.

Hurry up to mourn and even to cry!

Those are forlorn whose eyes are always dry.

With every breath the time runs out,

Every moment of life is a gift beyond any doubt.

Don’t break the harmony of life

For the only sake of a strife.

Have a look at the situation twice or even thrice

You will find for sure a compromise.

Hurry up to love the rain and the snow!

Hurry up to love everything that grow!

Hurry up to love the hot and the cold

Hurry up to love the young and the old.

Hurry up to live in winter and summer!

Find the beauty in autumn and spring!

Appreciate a farmer who works hard

And…present you a pumpkin on Halloween.

Hurry up to listen and hear!

Feel the souls of those who are dear!

Hurry up and be happy today!

Nothing for tomorrow delay!

Summing up I repeat again:

Hurry up! Hurry up! Hurry up!

Time Enough

I know it is early morning,
And hope is calling aloud,
And your heart is afire with Youth’s desire
To hurry along with the crowd.
But linger a bit by the roadside,
And lend a hand by the way,
‘Tis a curious fact that a generous act
Brings leisure and luck to a day.

I know it is only the noontime –
There is chance enough to be kind;
But the hours run fast when the noon has passed,
And the shadows are close behind.
So think while the light is shining,
And act ere the set of the sun,
For the sorriest woe that a soul can know
Is to think what it might have done.

I know it is almost evening,
But the twilight hour is long.
If you listen and heed each cry of need
You can right full many a wrong.
For when we have finished the journey
We will all look back and say:
‘On life’s long mile there was nothing worth while
But the good we did by the way.’

There You were

There you were

You’re always laughing at me
Is that how life’s supposed to be?
Each night I cry
Don’t tell me you don’t know why

But I rose up to live once more
From the grave of my depression.
You were too blind to see my real worth
But I lived again

There you were abusing me
Torturing my life inside out
I still don’t know why
Is that how life’s supposed to be?

But I rose up to live once more
From the grave of my depression
You were too blind to see my real worth
But I lived again

A day won’t go by
When I think of you
How cruel you were to me
And how I became stronger
Day by day
From the thoughts of you
Giving and not taking
From me, for me

And I rose up to live once more
From the grave of my depression
You were too blind to see my real worth
And I lived again

Now you are helping me
That’s how life’s supposed to be
There you are being a friend
But is it true until the end?

And you raised me up to live once more
From the grave of my depression
You re-gained your sight and saw my worth
And you lived again

There you were

Words of Comfort

In my mind thoughts will flow, from The Truth I have come to know,
To words of light and encouragement, to the places I’ve been sent.
A comfort to all who do believe, and a light to all who are deceived,
God’s encouragement to a brother, while words of Truth to another.

Comforting words that I can say, to brighten a brother’s dismal day,
Words filled with hope and love, that point to our Savior, up above.
Words of Truth that only come, through The Spirit from God’s Son,
Who comes to dwell in our heart, from where words He does impart.

This to bring the lost to The Truth, through loving words not reproof,
So through our words men can see, The Loving Father of all Eternity,
Who came to die, to give us life, through His Only Son, Jesus Christ.
Who now lives, so that all men, through The Son can be Born Again.

Then receive The Spirit spoken of, when they accept His Son’s Love.
To be used upon this temporal earth, through the power of New Birth,
And the washing and regeneration, through His Blood unto Salvation.
Which only comes from God’s Son, the Lord and Savior of everyone.

You too will share the Living Word, speaking Truth until all have heard,
The saving Truth of God’s Salvation, Christ who came for every nation.
And then you will be a comfort too, to all who believe like me and you,
Speaking words of comfort friend, about life in Christ that has on end.

Sunlight

I can’t wait for tomorrow
To see a brand new day
I think about the morning
And it warms my heart
The morning sunlight
That brings me hope
The sunlight
That keeps me to smile

Oh sunlight… don’t you know
How much joy you had brought to me?
I go dance with the trees
To the tune of gasping leaves

Sunlight, Oh sunlight
Show me the way
For a brighter day
Shine on me like a guiding light
Bring me the love
That I can feel deep inside of me
Come to me
And light my window pane
For today, you are my angel

Oh sunlight, my sunlight
Stay close to me
As I feel your power
That embraces me
For today and tomorrow
You’ll be there beside me
Oh sunlight….
You’re my laughter, my friend
My life, my joy
Oh sunlight….! ! !

Ode for New Year's Day

Woe unto you, ye sons of pain that are this day in earth,
Now cry for all your torment: now curse your hour of birth
And the fathers who begat you to a portion nothing worth.
And Thou, my own beloved, for as brave as ere thou art,
Bow down thine head, Despoina, clasp thy pale arms over it,
Lie low with fast-closed eyelids, clenched teeth, enduring heart,
For sorrow on sorrow is coming wherein all flesh has part.
The sky above is sickening, the clouds of God’s hate cover it,
Body and soul shall suffer beyond all word or thought,
Till the pain and noisy terror that these first years have wrought
Seem but the soft arising and prelude of the storm
That fiercer still and heavier with sharper lightnings fraught
Shall pour red wrath upon us over a world deform.

Thrice happy, O Despoina, were the men who were alive
In the great age and the golden age when still the cycle ran
On upward curve and easily, for them both maid and man
And beast and tree and spirit in the green earth could thrive.
But now one age is ending, and God calls home the stars
And looses the wheel of the ages and sends it spinning back
Amid the death of nations, and points a downward track,
And madness is come over us and great and little wars.
He has not left one valley, one isle of fresh and green
Where old friends could forgather amid the howling wreck.
It’s vainly we are praying. We cannot, cannot check
The Power who slays and puts aside the beauty that has been.

It’s truth they tell, Despoina, none hears the heart’s complaining
For Nature will not pity, nor the red God lend an ear,
Yet I too have been mad in the hour of bitter paining
And lifted up my voice to God, thinking that he could hear
The curse wherewith I cursed Him because the Good was dead.
But lo! I am grown wiser, knowing that our own hearts
Have made a phantom called the Good, while a few years have sped
Over a little planet. And what should the great Lord know of it
Who tosses the dust of chaos and gives the suns their parts?
Hither and thither he moves them; for an hour we see the show of it:
Only a little hour, and the life of the race is done.
And here he builds a nebula, and there he slays a sun
And works his own fierce pleasure. All things he shall fulfill,
And O, my poor Despoina, do you think he ever hears
The wail of hearts he has broken, the sound of human ill?
He cares not for our virtues, our little hopes and fears,
And how could it all go on, love, if he knew of laughter and tears?

Ah, sweet, if a man could cheat him! If you could flee away
Into some other country beyond the rosy West,
To hide in the deep forests and be for ever at rest
From the rankling hate of God and the outworn world’s decay!

I Can Give You Everything

Hurry wont you hurry
Light my eye with your smile
Cross my palm with your thought
For the hand that meets the eye
Brings you closer to my mind
Cos in one crowded hour
You plan to make all the moments
(plan to make all the moments)
Last a lifetime
I can give you everything
I can give you everything
I can give you everything
That I want to give
All alone in the heat of the night
Say come on lets be strong
Kindle my soul
For you are my pride and joy
For it is precious
Sing rejoice, sing rejoice
For I bring you good tidings
I can give you everything
I can give you everything
I can give you everything
That I want to give
All washed up and dirty
I had no place to go
I had no place to go
I can give you everything
I can give you everything
I can give you everything

Come on with your everything

A FRIEND IS A FRIEND
WELL BEYOND THE END
BECAUSE A FRIEND
LIVES IN THE HEART
AND IN THE SOUL
WHICH TURNS INTO
SWEET MEMORIES
WHEN YOU FALL APART
AND LOOSE CONTROL
A FRIEND IS A FRIEND
WELL BEYOND THE END
BECAUSE A FRIEND
SHARE A GOOD CHEERS
THROUGH SADNESS AND TEARS
LETTING YOU KNOW
THAT YOU HAVE A FRIEND HERE

Sonnet: We Shan’t Be Selfish

Not single friend but many foes have I,
In life, though vast be world in which I live;
All seem to lead this live so selfishly,
And not a moment for others, they give.

And yet, they want all things to happen well,
Throughout their lives and God to be their Friend;
But ego leads them finally to Hell;
Their earthly road leading to a dead-end.

Some correct lives as early as they can;
Some do it in the eleventh hour of life;
Some take the risk of mercy from God’s pan;
Some sacrifice their life, living in strife.

Our earthly toil is rent paid for Heaven!
In God’s Abode will stay afree good men.

Short

The depth of life
The length thereof
The depth of a life
The years thereof
The depth of your life
The distance from your first wisp of
Earth's worried air of
Life to the finish line of
A life well lived or of
One which was spent waiting for
The future which may or may not
Hold you in it for
Today is given you to
Make all the difference you can and to
Smell all the flowers you can and to
Love as deeply as you can and to
Let laughter break some ribs and to
Let rain drown your tears and to
Give yourself away and to
Worship as truly as you can and to
Leave your worries in yesterday then
Do the things fear won't let you do then
Say the things that matter most then
Do the things you haven't done then
Do the things you have to do and then
Give a life a meaning
Find life's meaning
Hidden in love's meaning
And your life meaning
Breathing in God's meaning
And pick up a book of meanings
To check the short meaning
Of short and find that that's the
Aching distance from the
First intake of air to the
Last release of the same.

So Very Busy

So very busy with so much to do, oh dear friend, if you only knew,
Knew how much God did care, and that in Jesus He’s always there.
Christ is with me throughout the day, helping me to discern the way,
The day can be very hectic friend, if time with God I do not spend.

The Lord helps me to prioritize, things of importance in His eyes.
When days get busy as can be, we can easily forget about eternity.
And our days are a means to an end, of an eternity we all will spend.
And friend our focus must coincide, with the Spirit who lives inside.

As we live out this earthly life, we must point men to Jesus Christ,
For life without Christ my friend, is a dark eternity that you’ll spend.
It’s the biggest priority in life; do you know The Lord Jesus Christ?
And if you know Jesus Christ, is His will a part of your daily life?

Satan wants to so fill our days, so Christ gets absolutely no praise.
He wants to overwhelm every hour, so that you’re devoid of power.
He doesn’t want found in your life, the presence or peace of Christ.
Satan wants to make you testimony, void and appear to be phony.

But Christ came to give unto me, a New Life and that abundantly.
An abundance of Peace by Christ, to be found displayed in my life.
And an abundance of His Power, to help me in every working hour.
Then at a busy day’s end, I can thank The Lord for being my friend.
