Bryan Ferry

When I started writing songs, I stopped painting completely, and the only art things I do are connected to the career, like album sleeves and, to some extent, posters and things like that.

Yeah, I came in at the end of the Notorious album, played on about five tracks and then we went on a tour. Then we did another album, Big Thing, and then we started writing songs together in 1989.

It all has to do with art - writing, painting, things I've done for a long time but just never had enough time to pursue. I have poetry - things that are designed for songs, but they're always poems first.

I Could Have Stopped Writing

i could have stopped writing
some letters on my wall
some words on a clean sheet
of paper, i could have stopped
many years ago, when things
lack the luster of meaning
the shining hues of explanations,
steps do not traces steps
on the floor, and what the windows
see sometimes are so untrue
and my eyes are blinded
with so much light from the
slits of light coming from the
noonday roof,
i could have stopped writing
and tell myself: oh, there are more
important things in my life
to do, and there i may take
some colors for meaning
blue for peace and red for love
and violets for remembrances,

i could have stopped writing
but how could i? my throats dry up
my hands shrink, my heart grow holes
of hollowness, my lungs collapse,
my head falls off from my neck,
my body freezes, my ears close
inside its lobes,

i die without it. It is my life,
so how could i ever stop living?

When I am seriously composing, sometimes a phrase will come into my head, a catch phrase. When I was writing pop songs for a few years, as a career, separate from my folksinging career, I used to write songs for pop singers.

Carlos' In the Middle of the Road, Plagiarized by Me

in the middle of my writing career there was you
you were in the middle of my writing career
there was you
in the middle of my writing career there was you

never should i forget this incident
in the life of my broken eyelashes
never should i forget that in the middle of my writing career
there was you
there was you in the middle of my writing career
in the middle of my writing career
there was you

you were that stone.

Just One Of Those Things

As dorothy parker once said
To her boyfriend, fare thee well
As columbus announced
When he knew he was bounced,
It was swell, isabel, swell
As abelard said to eloise,
Dont forget to drop a line to me, please
As juliet cried, in her romeos ear,
Romeo, why not face the fact, my dear
It was just one of those things
Just one of those crazy flings
One of those bells that now and then rings
Just one of those things
It was just one of those nights
Just one of those fabulous flights
A trip to the moon on gossamer wings
Just one of those things
If wed thought a bit, of the end of it
When we started painting the town
Wed have been aware that our love affair
Was too hot, not to cool down
So good-bye, dear, and amen
Heres hoping we meet now and then
It was great fun
But it was just one of those things
If wed thought a bit, of the end of it
When we started painting the town
Wed have been aware that our love affair
Was too hot, not to cool down
So good-bye, dear, and amen
Heres hoping we meet now and then
It was great fun
But it was just one of those things
Just one of those things

Kissing my love
( Bill Withers )
When I'm kissing my love
I can hear a thump thumping in my head
Mmm when I'm kissing my love
I close my eyes and see
A pretty city
With a million flowerbeds
Ah I can hear the angels sing
Songs that only angels sing
He's such a pretty thing
That I can feel my heart
Just a thumping and a skipping
When I'm kissing my love
Mmm ah when I'm kissing my love
I feel the blood pumping in my veins
Mmm when I'm kissing my love
He's such a tender sender
With a sweet young frame
Oh he's so good at what he does
All I wanna do is kiss and hug
He's got me in love
And I can feel my heart
Just a thumping and a skipping
When I'm kissing my love
When I'm

To the extent that '60s guys own things, yes... but I don't have the publishing, just like most '60s guys, and that was an error, you know... part ownership in publishing was the kind of era that started a little bit later, when real businessmen started to manage artists.

It Is Me

He sat in his own world
writing down the stories
that came to his mind.
He never watched time,
for him there
was no time.

He wrote stories of love,
of mystery and suspense.
He wrote of everything
that popped into his head.
He was not a lonely person
as his characters kept him company.

He wrote things
for every writing sphere,
but there was one thing
he could not write
which may come as a surprise
to everyone.

He could not write a letter
no matter how hard he tried.
His mind went completely blank
whenever he tried.
Yet he could write
just about everything else.

He could write songs,
he could write stories at will.
He could write poems
on everything,
but writing a letter
was something he could not do.

Now all who read this
might take it as a joke,
but it is very true
every word I have spoke,
and how would I know that.
The answer is simple it is me.

I want to be as honest as I can about the things I've been through - the sorrows and joys, victories and defeats - and to use those experiences as a well to draw from. Hopefully, the songs that result from that kind of writing will be songs that mean something to others.
