A Somber Third
A minor chord can make me sad
and yet I crave its sound.
Why that is I can't explain
for it makes me come unwound.
So what is it about that sound
that changes how I feel?
Inside my musical memories
that somber 3rd does peal.
With it come the memories
of times that made me blue,
loneliness and emptiness
and absences from you.
I know I need to free myself
and make a major leap
away from that minor chord
and away from tears that weep.

Music
The neighbour sits in his window and plays the flute.
From my bed I can hear him,
And the round notes flutter and tap about the room,
And hit against each other,
Blurring to unexpected chords.
It is very beautiful,
With the little flute-notes all about me,
In the darkness.
In the daytime,
The neighbour eats bread and onions with one hand
And copies music with the other.
He is fat and has a bald head,
So I do not look at him,
But run quickly past his window.
There is always the sky to look at,
Or the water in the well!
But when night comes and he plays his flute,
I think of him as a young man,
With gold seals hanging from his watch,
And a blue coat with silver buttons.
As I lie in my bed
The flute-notes push against my ears and lips,

Chords
Do you notice how many minor chords I play?
They fit the mood I'm in.
Once in a while a major chord
Will change the mood I'm in.
Oh for that 3rd to make its way
Into my heart without warning
Is sometimes too much for my body
which is raging and storming.
How can one half step affect me?
There is no answer to that.
My fingers just fall on it naturally.

I don't understand why Europeans and South Americans can take more sophistication. Why is it that Americans need to hear their happiness major and their tragedy minor, and as jazzy as they can handle is a seventh chord? Are they not experiencing complex emotions?

I think one of the best things you can do, no matter what you play, is to take up piano. Music is based on chord changes and harmonies, and you can get 'em more out of an instrument like piano, where you can hear all the notes at once.
