Edward Lear

There was a Young Lady of Portugal,
Whose ideas were excessively nautical:
She climbed up a tree,
To examine the sea,
But declared she would never leave Portugal.

Cascais Portugal

Cascais, Portugal.

First day of summer both winter and spring, full of rain; we are visiting her mother’s
resting place, a hole in a wall with a glass door that has a flimsy lock; easy to break in to
but who would want too? Her mother, born in Kinshasa, Congo, but upheaval forced
her to leave; now she rests in Cascais, Portugal far from her native land. The bible on
top of the coffin is full of tiny holes soon the book will be a pile of dust

While my wife pray I go for a walk, beautiful day and Cascais has a lovely bay. There are
sailboats and a few yachts in the bay one of them belongs to Prince Albert of Monaco,
he likes Portugal, the local paper enthuses. Indeed, aren’t we lucky? She joins me, says
“I don’t like boats and I don’t like the sea, my first husband took me on a sailing trip in
lake Lugarno, I was so sick they had to set me ashore.” We turn our back to the bay,
her mother and walk back to the car.

I remember a winter night in the North Atlantic Ocean, giant waves came crashing on
deck taking the railing and lifeboats away. Three ships sank that night with irrelevant
cargo onboard. No survivors. “Yes dear, the sea is a monster if it doesn’t takes your
body it takes your soul.”

the Cherry Blossoms

'the cherry blossoms'

swaying in the wind the cherry blossoms feel the nice eastern breeze giving them air too breathe, the tallest tree in the area is loved by a lovely young lady who visits the cherry blossms every day.

the sakura tree gave this lovely young lady a cherry blossom as the eastern breeze blows over the tree, flattered by the gift the lovely young lady went home and made a gift for the sakura tree.

the next day she brought the sakura tree a sipphire ring as a thank you gift the sakura tree was thankful to the lovely young lady. many years passed and the sakura tree was cut down and the lovely young lady was very sick and passed.

she was berried where the sakura tree use to stand.

on top of her tombstone was the saphire ring ingraved on the ring were 3 words

I Love You.

Lady Day

When she walked on down the street
She was like a child staring at her feet
But when she passed the bar
And she heard the music play
She had to go in and sing
It had to be that way
She had to go in and sing
It had to be that way
And I said no, no, no
Oh, lady day
And I said no, no, no
Oh, lady day
After the applause had died down
And the people drifted away
She climbed down off the bar
And went out the door
To the hotel
That she called home
It had greenish walls
A bathroom in the hall
And I said no, no, no
Oh, lady day
And I said no, no, no
Oh, lady day
I said no, no, no
Oh, lady day
And I said no, no, no
Oh, lady day
And I said no, no, no
Oh, lady day
I said no, no, no
Oh, lady day
And I said no, no, no
Oh, lady day
And I said no, no, no
Oh, lady day
...

Examination

Abolish examination.
And who are you to take examination?

Do you know whom to examine
And how to examine?

If you are so keen to take examination
Examine yourself first.

It is not easy to examine self
And pass the examination
scoring top.

Examine self while alone
Alone at night
Alone at bed.

Dare not examine others and
Dare not examine especially children.

Fight For Freedom

The Fight for Freedom

Another art exhibition, paintings of naïve art decorated on ancient doors
and window shutters, most of them about harvesting of olive and carobs.
And of course there were mules and donkeys without the beasts of burden
the Iberian landscape could not contained its charm of slow but steady
labour. Fences made by stones, from unwilling earth, this patch of land
is mine given to me by my father. And so are the trees, all of them; land
was important back then for families’ survival and cultural inheritance.
And they are lucky, the Portuguese, no horde of war injured people will
descend upon them and declare a new Hebrew republic,
Yet, once upon a time Portugal was a province under Imperial Rome till
it declared independence, by force. If you do not fight for your freedom
you will not get it. So what is left for the Palestinians to do….Intifada?

Nautical Wheelers

By: jimmy buffett
1974
Nautical wheelers who call themselves sailors
Play fiddle tunes under the stars
Petticoats rustle, workin shoes scuffle
Shuffle on down to the bar
Where the jukebox is blastin and the liquor is flowin
An occasional bottle of wine
Thats cause everyone here is just more than contented
To be livin and dyin in three-quarter time
Chorus:
And its dance with me, dance with me, nautical wheelers
Take me to stars that you know
Come on and dance with me, dance with me, nautical wheelers
I want so badly to go
Well, the left footll follow
Where the right foot has travelled
Down to the sidewalks unglued
Into the streets of my city so neat
Where nobody cares what you do
Sonias just grinnin and phil is ecstatic
Mason has jumped in the sea
And Im hangin on to a line from my sailboat
All nautical wheelers save me
Chorus:
And its dance with me, dance with me, nautical wheelers
Take me to stars that you know
Come on and dance with me, dance with me, nautical wheelers
I want so badly to go
Well the sunrisell bring on
Sleep thats escaped us
Everyones off to their bed
Therell be huggin, squeezin
Little pleazin and teasin
And rubbin of each others heads
So wont you dream on compadres, seems nothing escapes you
Nothin, no reason, no rhyme
Thats cause everyone here is just more than contented
To be livin and dyin in three-quarter time
Chorus:
And its dance with me, dance with me, nautical wheelers
Take me to stars that you know
Come on and dance with me, dance with me, nautical wheelers
I want so badly to go
Coda:
I want so badly to go
Yes, I want so badly to go

We Do Not Want To Hear You Say

We do not want to hear you say how very great you are
Or if up the high hill to success you've climbed and climbed so far
To leave others talk of your success seems a better idea
Self praise is no praise so they say and that appeals to me.

We do not want to hear you say that you are God's gift to woman kind
But young women you fancy say that better than you are not hard to find
That women do not like egostical young men you seem to fail to see
And the few who say they like you do not like you only your money.

We do not want to hear you tell us of your successful life
And that the woman that you marry will be a wealthy fellow's wife
And that money speaks all languages may happen to be true
Few men in their early thirties would be as immature as you.

We do not want to hear you boast about your great success
It would seem that your money cannot buy you happiness
On the hill of financial success you may have climbed up far
But you should leave others tell the World of how great a man you are.

Spanish Caravan

Carry me caravan take me away
Take me to portugal, take me to spain
Andalusia with fields full of grain
I have to see you again and again
Take me, spanish caravan
Yes, I know you can
Trade winds find galleons lost in the sea
I know where treasure is waiting for me
Silver and gold in the mountains of spain
I have to see you again and again
Take me, spanish caravan
Yes, I know you can

Nostalgia

The heat is unusual even the olive grove
looks tired, old trees gasping waiting for
sundown. Yet the evening is still hot and
no breeze soothes tired leaves.
Every august I tell myself that next year
I´ll go to Norway to cool down. But what
I´m going to do there, it will be raining and
I never had an umbrella.

In my old home town I will be walking up
and down streets trying to catch the old
magic, that perhaps wasn´t there in
the first place, there were moments when
on Sunday forenoon, I used to walk to my
aunt´s house, we smoked cigarettes, drank
coffee and ate coco macrons.

On my walks I will only see young faces of
a new generation who has not in common
with me, and it will sadden me to see old
building torn down and replaced with new
shining office edifices ….And I will take
the first plane back to Portugal where my
elderliness is not a handicap.
