Sonnet: Let Science Help Discover God

It is an age of scientific progress,
A double edge weapon in human hands;
If well harnessed, man’s wants it can redress,
And meet the new century’s new demands.

Improve, it can the quality of life;
But if misused, brings extreme misery;
It can most men deliver from most strife,
And help to uncover God’s mystery.

Science makes less things that it can well destroy;
Man well ignores the existence of God;
In many hands, Science is a tool and toy,
And gives glory to man, tho’ made from clod.

Robert Heinlein

In this complex world, science, the scientific method, and the consequences of the scientific method are central to everything the
human race is doing and to wherever we are going. If we blow ourselves up we will do it by misapplication of science; if we manage to keep from blowing ourselves up, it will be through intelligent application of science.

Alliance of Poetry and Science

Poetry and Science don’t always
Appear to marry very well
But there are times
Amid these rhymes
When similar stories they tell

Science supports the quite Poetic view
I am both like and different from you
Though we hail from a like molecular start
Differences arise to set us apart

Poetry and Science do keep
Some common goals in mind
Both delving into the deep
While seeking to aid mankind
By examination of life’s glory
Both illuminate the human story

Scientists do quite logically rely
On observations of scientific eye
Poetry and Prose are much different art
Better envisioned when aided by the heart

Poets need not ever argue with Science
Nor should those of Science forgo reliance
On the value of the views brought
By what Poetry has wrought

If something at length be True
Such Truth will be valid then
No matter latter have you
Proved it by Science or Pen

Sonnet: The Poet and Science

Is Science, a poet’s foe in poetry?
Why blame the world of science for its progress?
Out-moded’s the poet’s Nature-study;
Literature must wear a scientific dress.

Gone are the days of blind beliefs/ legends;
Man has landed on the moon many times;
No more the moon has myths it portends;
Let science therefore be thy decor in rhymes.

Decoded has man, the human genome;
Many diseases have a cure today;
’Tis unwise still to write the myths of Rome!
Poets incorporate what science shall say.

Science is no impediment to the art!
Let modern poets make a newer start.

Tsunamis- God Makes: God Takes!

God makes, He breaks!
God gives, He takes!
What tragedy!
What mystery!
What suffering!
What faltering!
But Why God does, no one can know!
Why He allows? Why He says, ‘No’! ?
This is the world in which we live;
Nature will not her secrets give;
Nevertheless, we can’t complain;
There’s harmony in boon or bane;
Who dare question Almighty’s ways?
We live a life of numbered days!
Yet, God is kind and cares for us;
Without the Lord, we shall be worse;
Some things happen which we can’t take:
We never know what’s true or fake;
The science we know turns obsolete;
Our labor seems at times effete;
And yet, men say that science is God!
-Believing which is rather odd;
The earth has built her devices,
Those mitigate human vices;
The man who thinks he is all wise,
Is sooner, later cut to size;
Who dare defy the Lord’s commands
Will slip into the Devils’ hands;
We have a code and soul to keep;
If otherwise, bad things we reap;
Man cannot curb Nature’s freedom;
Harnessing it is but seldom;
God made the man better than beast,
Promising him a sumptuous Feast;
If he lives not a better life,
God gives him woes, aplenty strife;
Through Nature’s fury, God reminds
-‘Man is God’s toy, which He rewinds! ’

Sonnet: On Conscience

The modern man ignores his conscience,
And does much things against it if need be;
And thereby forgets God, believing Science,
And tries to be worldly-wise mostly.

God-given conscience is always right;
At times, man's judgement goes wildly amiss;
His inner voice guides man to see God's light;
His perspective of worldly things and bliss.

One can be blind of eyes and reach Heaven;
When blind to conscience, you can't see God;
Love God by serving His unfortunate men,
For souled are we to glorify the clod.
Blest is the man who acts per conscience;
You can't serve God and men by just man's science.

Science makes no pretension to eternal truth or absolute truth; some of its rivals do. That science is in some respects inhuman may be the secret of its success in alleviating human misery and mitigating human stupidity.

There are two kinds of truth: the truth that lights the way and the truth that warms the heart. The first of these is science, and the second is art. Neither is independent of the other or more important than the other. Without art science would be as useless as a pair of high forceps in the hands of a plumber. Without science art would become a crude mess of folklore and emotional quackery. The truth of art keeps science from becoming inhuman, and the truth of science keeps art from becoming ridiculous.

Song of the Cub

I know not what this may betoken,
That I feel so wondrous wise;
My dream of existence is broken
Since science has opened my eyes.
At the British Association
I heard the President’s speech,
And the methods and facts of creation
Seemed suddenly placed in my reach.

My life’s undivided devotion
To Science I solemnly vowed,
I’d dredge up the bed of the ocean,
I’d draw down the spark from the cloud.
To follow my thoughts as they go on,
Electrodes I’d place in my brain;
Nay, I'd swallow a live entozöon,
New feelings of life to obtain.

O where are those high feasts of Science?
O where are those words of the wise?
I hear but the roar of Red Lions,
I eat what their Jackal supplies.
I meant to lie so scientific,
But science seems turned into fun;
And this, with his roaring terrific,
That old red lion bath done.

Science is Unscientific

The Professor rose from his chair.
He moved the book to the middle
Of the table as he stood up.

"Now, listen! " he said in an amicable voice.
"Science prides itself in being factual,
objective, precise, unbiased, detached
and verifiable, free from introversion,
a way of knowing things without added colours
and portraying accurately the physical world
in its own light".

The Turtle was sipping his ginger ale.

"Oh, this description of science is nothing
but a myth", he said. "As I see it,
even the most magnificent accomplishments
of science involve emotions,
an individual sense of wonder and curiosity,
the psychological experience of the rapturous
and the mystical. Consequently,
a paradoxical and built in property
of science concerns
its own unscientific disposition.
And therefore, in my opinion,
science is thoroughly unscientific."

"Nonsense", the professor objected.
"If science were really unscientific,
as you claim, it could not produce
nuclear energy, airplanes, or computers.
And it could not put
astronauts on the moon".

"Well, I indeed never stop to wonder,
How is it possible that with so little knowledge
humans can accomplish so much? "
the Turtle said.

And then he added:
"But, you should not
confuse science with technology".

"I don't get your point", the Professor said,
"because you still did not provide me with
a good justification of your negative view
of science".

"Look! Science stands on very shaky
theoretical foundations", the Turtle explained.
This is so due to its reduction
of the concrete whole
to incomplete abstractions. Ironically,
the more scientific science tries to be,
the less scientific it becomes.
Science is rational and logical but the
universe, which it investigates is not.
We cannot separate ourselves
from the world outside.
Therefore, an objective investigation
of actuality ought to incorporate
the subjective experience.
The depiction of reality must be total.
Otherwise it cannot be truly scientific.
Mind you, ignoring the dominant
subjective realm of existence does not
make the world more objective.
Imagine, for example, a computer
that tries to understand
the human world without understanding
the human mind and human emotions".

A moment of silence ensued.
The Professor sank into his thoughts.
The Turtle took another sip
from the ginger ale.

"I'm not sure",
the Professor said eventually,
"that it would be a good thing
evolving a computer to a level
in which it would understand
such human qualities as humour, concern,
loyalty, compassion, love and anger.
I wonder if such a cybernetic device
would be our servant or our master."

Sonnet-Life Is Meaningless Sans God

I sought to know Life's meaning for quite long
Through Science and turned Atheist all the more;
And throughtout life, I was proved very wrong;
Science could not open Life's most secret door.

I sought Life's meaning from Mother Nature,
Who unfolded great truths of beauty much;
I learnt from her and turned quickly mature;
She showed me God, His Love and soothing touch.

Thus, Life divorced from God was vain pursuit;
My Theism took me to stellar heights;
God's mystery was more than our Life's great Truth;
I felt like one amidst the flying kites.

My Life was empty till I found my God
And saw His Love that made me Man from clod.

On Human Life on Earth

My arms are not just long enough;
My legs are never swift;
And what matters in men is, Oh,
The grey-mater- God’s gift!

There is an inherent reward
In things of earthly mould;
There’s too innate punishment-card
That comes from God untold!

This is the paradox of life
For men who come from mud;
Men’s decisions are fraught with strife;
They do more harm than good.

The more the frontiers of earth’s science
Advance in many fields,
Man better keep his conscience
In all the things he deals!

Although men may achieve much things,
And God made man for that,
Success in life is what God brings;
Man is God’s mere door-mat!

No matter how much shrewd man be,
He never can outdo,
His Creator more skillfully,
But, God’s Will, he must woo!

When man has reached the far-limit
Of earthly senses, thence,
To further science, he is unfit:
His quest for God begins!

However great a man may be,
Mother Nature’s the best;
When time is spend more wastefully,
Man fails God’s earthly Test!

Carl Sagan

We must surrender our skepticism only in the face of rock-solid evidence. Science demands a tolerance for ambiguity. Where we are ignorant, we withhold belief. Whatever annoyance the uncertainty engenders serves a higher purpose: It drives us to accumulate better data. This attitude is the difference between science and so much else. Science offers little in the way of cheap thrills. The standards of evidence are strict. But when followed they allow us to see far, illuminating even a great darkness.

Miles And Miles

years and years,
miles and miles...
of hands,
grasping mine, holding on
for a time and then letting go...
being grasped by mine,
being pulled up, pulling up,
held onto in spite of...

black, brown, white, and red...
male and female, old and young,
soft, gnarled, and scarred...

hands joining together,
backs against the wall,
hands that pray without letting go,
hands that let go
when the time demands...

hands that build and take down,
that deliver and stand by...
hands powered by hearts
that beat true and human!
