Ballade Of A Great Weariness
There's little to have but the things I had,
There's little to bear but the things I bore.
There's nothing to carry and naught to add,
And glory to Heaven, I paid the score.
There's little to do but I did before,
There's little to learn but the things I know;
And this is the sum of a lasting lore:
Scratch a lover, and find a foe.
And couldn't it be I was young and mad
If ever my heart on my sleeve I wore?
There's many to claw at a heart unclad,
And little the wonder it ripped and tore.
There's one that'll join in their push and roar,
With stories to jabber, and stones to throw;
He'll fetch you a lesson that costs you sore:
Scratch a lover, and find a foe.
So little I'll offer to you, my lad;
It's little in loving I set my store.
There's many a maid would be flushed and glad,
And better you'll knock at a kindlier door.
I'll dig at my lettuce, and sweep my floor,
Forever, forever I'm done with woe.
And happen I'll whistle about my chore,
"Scratch a lover, and find a foe."
L'ENVOI
Oh, beggar or prince, no more, no more!
Be off and away with your strut and show.
The sweeter the apple, the blacker the core:
Scratch a lover, and find a foe!

Scratch My Back
(words & music by giant - baum - kaye)
One good turn deserves another
Be my love, Ill be your lover
Its all part of natures laws
If youll scratch my back then Ill scratch yours.
If youll scratch my back then Ill scratch your back
Like two peas in a pack, lets get rid of our itch together, hmm
Joy they say is in the giving
Come on give, make life worth living
Your welfare is my concern
Do a favour for me, Ill do one in return
If youll scratch my back then Ill scratch your back
Like two peas in a pack, lets get rid of our itch together, hmm
Scratch me now a little lower
What a feeling do it slower
Thats it, hmm youre getting hot
Well I gotta admit, you just hit the spot
If youll scratch my back then Ill scratch your back
Like two peas in a pack, lets get rid of our itch together, hmm
If youll scratch my back then Ill scratch your back

Lover Lover Lover
I asked my father,
I said, father change my name.
The one Im using now its covered up
With fear and filth and cowardice and shame.
Yes and lover, lover, lover, lover, lover, lover, lover come back to me,
Yes and lover, lover, lover, lover, lover, lover, lover come back to me.
He said, I locked you in this body,
I meant it as a kind of trial.
You can use it for a weapon,
Or to make some woman smile.
Yes and lover, lover, lover, lover, lover, lover, lover come back to me,
Yes and lover, lover, lover, lover, lover, lover, lover come back to me.
Then let me start again, I cried,
Please let me start again,
I want a face thats fair this time,
I want a spirit that is calm.
Yes and lover, lover, lover, lover, lover, lover, lover come back to me,
Yes and lover, lover, lover, lover, lover, lover, lover come back to me.
I never never turned aside, he said,
I never walked away.
It was you who built the temple,
It was you who covered up my face.
Yes and lover, lover, lover, lover, lover, lover, lover come back to me,
Yes and lover, lover, lover, lover, lover, lover, lover come back to me.
And may the spirit of this song,
May it rise up pure and free.
May it be a shield for you,
A shield against the enemy.
Yes and lover, lover, lover, lover, lover, lover, lover come back to me,
Yes and lover, lover, lover, lover, lover, lover, lover come back to me.
Yes and lover, lover, lover, lover, lover, lover, lover come back to me,
Yes and lover, lover, lover, lover, lover, lover, lover come back to me.

Been Around The World
Hey yeah hmmmm
Well its been four lonely days and three lonely nights
Looking for my baby but shes nowhere in sight
See Ive traveled far and wide
Seen the finest places
What does it all amount to, when theres no familiar faces
[chorus:]
See Ive been around the world and i
I cant find my lover
Been around the world and i
I dont know where she can be
Been around the world and i
I cant find my lover
Been around the world and i
And I cant even find myself
Hey yeah
Oh oh
Well I dont know where I am
And I dont know who Im with
All Im hanging on to is that loving that you give
You see Ive lost my sense of time
And I got no direction
Sending out a signal
Been trying to get your attention
[chorus:]
See Ive been around the world and i
I cant find my lover
Been around the world and i
I dont know where she can be
Been around the world and i
I cant find my lover
Been around the world and i
I cant even find myself
Hey you know what Im talking about
I aint the only one whos feeling down and out
No, theres no spaces they clutter up my mind
Those wonderful traces
Suddenly theres no place I can find
My lover my lover
My lover my lover
Yeah yeah ohh
See Ive been around the world and i
I cant find my - my lover my lover
Been around
I cant even find myself
[chorus:]
See Ive been around the world and i
I cant find my lover
Been around the world and i
I dont know where she can be
Been around the world and i
I cant find my lover
Been around the world and i
I dont know where she can be
See Ive been around the world and i
I cant find my lover
Been around the world and i
I dont know where she can be
Been around the world and i
I cant find my lover
Been around the world and i
I cant even find myself
Well its been four lonely days and three lonely nights

Itch and Scratch
You’re just like an itch
that keeps coming back.
Every time I itch
I have to scratch, scratch, scratch.
Just like a train
on a railroad track
You go away today
and tomorrow come back.
Try taking an aeroplane
instead of a car,
then hop on a rocket
to a distant star.
You’re just like an itch
that keeps coming back.
Every time I itch
I have to scratch, scratch, scratch.
And just like an itch
you’ve got under my skin,
this is a situation
that I just can’t win.
Please give me a break
and get off my back.
Get out of here
and don’t come back.
You’re just like an itch
that keeps coming back.
Every time I itch
I have to scratch, scratch, scratch.

Early In The Morning
Oh I bet
You were a virgin
'Til you let me
Oh I miss your kiss
When you are gone
I was young and foolish
Didn't know what I was doing
Didn't know I'd lost you
'Til you were gone
Oh I miss your loving
When you are gone
Now I gotta get up
Early in the morning
Find me another lover
Now I've got to get up early
Every morning
'Cos the early bird
Always catches the worm
Now I've got to get up early
Every morning
Got to make up for the
Lesson I learned
Got to find me a lover
Who won't run for cover
Find me a lover
Who won't run for cover
Got to get up
Early in the morning
Find me another lover
Now I gotta get up
Early in the morning
Find me another lover
I was young and foolish
Didn't know what I was doing
Didn't know I'd lost you
'Til you'd gone
She had a pretty face
Drove me wild
I even wanted her to have my child

The Ape And God
Son put a poser up to me
That made me scratch my head:
"God made the whole wide world," quoth he;
"That's right, my boy," I said.
Said son: "He mad the mountains soar,
And all the plains lie flat;
But Dad, what did he do before
He did all that?
Said I: "Creation was his biz;
He set the stars to shine;
The sun and moon and all that is
Were His unique design.
The Cosmos is his concrete thought,
The Universe his chore..."
Said Son: "I understand, but what
Did He before?"
I gave it up; I could not cope
With his enquiring prod,
And must admit I've little hope
Of understanding God.
Indeed I find more to my mind
The monkey in the tree
In whose crude form Nature defined
Our human destiny.
Thought I: "Why search for Deity
In visionary shape?
'Twould better be if we could see
The angel in the ape.
Let mystic seek a God above:
Far wiser he who delves,
To find in kindliness and love
God in ourselves."

Raw
Ive been running round town for a new identiy
Ive been dreaming hot dreams of insecurity
Ive been chasing my heart through the streets of my mind
Ive been clinging to the bed the sweat is turning me blind
Well Im plugged all the holes and sealing all the cracks
Im like a galvanised nerve I just cant seem to relax
Shes got fire on her breath and chilli on her lips
Teeth around her neck and shes got jazz on her hips
Theres a flash in my brain like a shot from above
Its a strange idea of love
Like a wolf at the door
Like a scratch of a claw
She says come on baby I want it raw
A wolf at the door
A scratch of a claw
I want it raw
Well Im driving out of town Im on the verge of a storm
Im sucking my st. christopher and trying to keep calm
A mambo mamma on the back of my heels
And this incantation can trap my wheels
Theres a heat in my car theres a fog on my screen
Ive never felt so scared never dreamt such a dream
Theres a man on the corner preaching fire above
Its a strange idea of love
Like a wolf at the door
Like a scratch of a claw
She says come on baby I want it raw!
A wolf at the door
A scratch of a claw
I want it raw!

It's The Lover
(rich donahue/patrick dollaghan)
He broke your heart and said goodbye
After promising forever
You wonder why you even tried
He was such a good pretender
The love you gave was all in vain
And nothing anyone can say
Could ever make you love that way again
It's the lover not the love
Who broke your heart last night
It's the lover not the dream
That didn't work out right
If you listen to your heart
You'll know it's true
It's the lover not the love
Who deserted you
Don't stop reachin' for the stars
Let tomorrow live inside you
And just remember who you are
Keep the faith and love will find you
A heart in love can lose it's true
Don't give up in time to find
The one who's right will come to you
It's the lover not the love
Who broke your heart last night
It's the lover not the dream
That didn't work out right
If you listen to your heart
You'll know it's true
It's the lover not the love
Who deserted you
It does no good to second guess
Whether love is wrong or right
If it was really meant to be
He'd be with you tonight
It's the lover not the love
Who broke your heart last night
It's the lover not the dream
That didn't turn out right
If you listen to your heart
You'll know it's true
It's the lover not the love
Who deserted you

No one lives long enough to learn everything they need to learn starting from scratch. To be successful, we absolutely, positively have to find people who have already paid the price to learn the things that we need to learn to achieve our goals.

Past the nonsense
Past the nonsense
I find you and you find me
and I wonder
why small things wants to scratch,
and you are
so deep in my heart.
Fear of getting sore again
now has to find another place,
since where I am with you
and where our relationship stands
is at a place that wants to go
much deeper.
For me you are the sun, the moon
and more than the big blue sky
hanging above us
and in every star
that rises blinking each night
I see something that tell
how wonderful it is
to know you.
Promise that I can get a kiss
from you tonight
and you make me already happy now
and the day
becomes open and wonderful to me.

Ever since there was sun and stars
If you wipe away those tears
And look back over all of those years
You will find not a surer kind of love
Ever since there was a sun and stars
Above to warm the blood in our hearts
"Forever you" I've been in love
"Forever you" I've been in love
I've been there in love for you
You will find not a surer kind of love
You will find every wish
You've only been thinking, dreaming of
Oh, dream of me!
Like I'm dreaming of you again…
Oh when the winter raps its cloak
Around your heart
I will always be there to warm
And shelter you
"Forever you"
"Forever you"
From the cold and dark
Sure as a fire is burning in your heart
"Forever will I be"
Tracking back in the melting ice
And snow
It's never easy but if you love me
You will discover and find the old me
And I will be
Sure to follow you
"Forever you"
For all eternity
Because of what you have meant to me.

My Old Lover
I've yet not recovered...
From you,
My old lover.
No!
I've yet not recovered...
From you,
My old lover.
I find you right here on my mind,
When under covers.
I find I'm giving you my time,
When with another.
Although there's someone new.
Someone that is not you...
But another!
I sleep with.
And here,
As my lover.
I find you right here on my mind,
When with another.
I find I'm giving you my time,
With another lover.
Why are you on my mind?
When you told me to find,
Another...
To discover,
Since we didn't have each other.
I've yet not recovered...
From you,
My old lover.
No!
I've yet not recovered...
From you,
My old lover.
Although there's someone new.
Someone that is not you...
But another!
I sleep with.
And here,
As my lover.
Although there's someone new.
Someone that is not you...
But another!
I sleep with.
And here,
As my lover.
I've yet not recovered...
From you,
My old lover.
No!
I've yet not recovered...
From you,
My old lover.
My old lover.
My old lover.

Mutual Itch One Lonely Night
this mutual each we have
one lonely night
when the moon sails in the
black sky
and the stars are too near
like lilies to the sailboat
on the placid lake,
i scratch my itch
you scratch yours
but what about our backs
those parts that i cannot reach
and you cannot reach
too
we follow the natural law
i'll scratch your back
and you scratch mine
no more no less
we are just
but friends,
tonight

The Pack
A bit of metaphysics or a psychologic catch
Will sit upon my breast all day and scratch and scratch and
scratch. Now isn't it a pity that the ragged thorns of culture Should be tearing at my vitals, as Prometheus's the vulture?
I really have no liking for abstruse and subtle question.
I prefer to laugh in sunshine and to cherish my digestion.
But a pack of eager queries, barking, barking, hound me on,
Until I find an hour of life's pure delight is gone.

Joan and Romeo's Juliet
Once upon a time,
There was a Romeo and a Juliet
But Juliet was really Joan
who left Romeo to lead the captives to victory
Then captured and put on trial for heresy
After judgment was rendered, but before being burned at the stake,
a peasant girl loosened Joan's chains and won her heart
They Escaped to France to
live happily ever after in eachother's arms
Romeo got elected to congress
And as he rose in power,
He set out to win back Juliet
Only to find that his efforts were in vain
So on one very dark day,
He stole Juliet's lover away…
Joan offered ransom for her lover
Romeo gave a counter-offer
And in France at sunset
Romeo and Joan met
Over coffee
To negotiate the heart of Romeo's discontent
An offer to let Joan's lover go
In exchange for Joan to return as Juliet
And it was so
That her lover was let go...
But empty beds do lie a lover's soul
That cannot bear to take in the sunlight all alone
And so it was, that Joan's lover died of a broken heart
After coming home to find a note
'Had to return to Romeo. Love Joan xoxo'
Upon hearing her lover's fate
Joan, a version of her former Juliet self,
Took upon her lips a mix of poisons sure to set Joan free
From the Juliet of her Romeo
To live in heaven with her lover happily
Soon after, Romeo returned, anticipating a Juliet open and waiting
But saw instead that death had taken hold
Realizing too late - that Juliet was always Joan
And Romeo, who swore he would live with no other,
that he could never recover...indefinitely,
the very next day,
married his press secretary
The end

Critiques
when they read your poem
and find some fleas there
and they scratch their heads
like saying: this is bad, this is really bad
and they crumple your poem
and throw it in their waste basket
and they junk the best poem you
have written taking you days and days to revise it
like it is a composition
of another nincompoop. a moron, a lesser kind of
the human being
like a bubble, a bumble, a bum, a belle, a keg,
a piece of feces
a ning nang nang nang
well, write another one.do not ever stop writing.
if you find the one that they have thrown in the waste basket
again, by chance,
redeem it,
take it back and iron out what difference have you
with that critique
(who has not written even a poem for his dog)
have patience. and always remember
you did not write the poem for him
you write it for you and your lover
and your loved one,
and another lover and many more lovers
of life and its
ecstacies
till kingdom come
be patient.
be ever patient.
it is you who has
seen the light. not them.
open another door.
go inside where your lovers dwell.
they will kiss you.
they will clap their hands
and drink beer with you.
and it will be dark again,
and you cannot sleep after you make love.
three times on the floor
and there and then
in your nudity
another voice comes inside your ears
asking that you write
about a floating blue butterfly
looking for the opening
of an orange
flower
another poem shall be written
early morning
be glad
the voice is still there
your shrink may tell you to name the voice.
for he thinks you are schizephrenic
to the max
do not tell him.
it is your secret with God.
be glad.write it.now.

Hesitation Dance
Like a vision standin there,
Lips poutin, a come-on stare,
Come on -- I thought I had your number,
Workin up an appetite for love,
Dont let me die of hunger,
Aint ya got no heart,
No compassion for your lover,
When I get you on the floor, I find its just another,
*hesitation dance c
You got me in a stone-cold trance
Hesitation dance
Go out and find another fool
For your game of chance*
Shut the door, draw the blinds,
Yeah baby gonna draw the lines,
Come on, I know your hearts on fire,
How could anyone who plays the part
And tastes so sweet wanna hide her heart away,
Youre my main desire --
Aint you got no heart --
No compassion for your lover,
When I get you on the floor,
I find its just another
( * repeat)

Little Lover
(nash / clarke)
You leave me sad and lonely
Sitting here oh so blue
Since you went away and told me, baby,
Yeah that were through
Now baby, cmon (cmon little lover)
Yeah cmon (cmon little lover)
Yeah cmon little lover
Cmon and discover
My love for you
Trying to forget you
Getting you outta my mind
Im gonna search all over this world
And find some other kind
Now some other lover (cmon little lover)
Some other lover (cmon little lover)
Cmon little lover
Cmon and discover
My love for you
Break
Writing you a letter
Feeling oh so blue
Ive been crying my heart out baby
Since you said were through
Now baby cmon (cmon little lover)
Yeah cmon (cmon little lover)

Cmon and discover
