The Drifter
The wolf was not too keen to mix,
A drifter, nothing more...
And his own company he picks,
As if he knows the score...
Responsibilities dismissed,
Discarded out-of-hand,
They could not help him to exist
In water or on land...
He checks the water carefully,
Avoiding pain and strife,
As if he wanted certainty
Through each day of his life...
On his own a hundred rainbows,
On Earth, beneath the sky,
The drifter chose this path he goes,
No family nearby...
He drifts just like the sun by day
And like the moon at night,
Alone, yet choosing come what may,
No conscience as a guide...
To him, life is no funfair ride,
No easy path to stroll...
The drifter has no sense of pride...
The drifter has no soul...

Drifter In The Dark
Do you ever walk alone?
Like a drifter in the dark
Seeking out what isnt there
Looking only for a spark
From a girl whos all alone
Maybe shes a-driftin too
Like a shadow in the night
Waitin just to meet with you
And then perhaps in love youll stay
Or fall and go your separate ways
Still searchin for a spark
Like a drifter in the dark
Doodn doo doo doodn doo (da da da da da) [8x]
(repeat first verse)
Like a drifter in the dark [4x]

Soul Drifter
Written by lindsey buckingham
Im a soul drifter
And Im out of this town
Aint no use hangin? round
You see
My heart was broken
My part was spoken
Now the ground has opened
All around me
Im a soul lifter
And its out of my hands
So its off to other lands
You see
Its a new dawn
So its so long
For the soul lifter
The soul drifter
Thats me

Im A Drifter
Im a drifter, a driftin drifter
Got no place to call my home no more
Im a wanderer, a wandering wanderer
Got no one to call my own no more
Got no strings to tie me down
Got no cause to hang around
What difference does it make which way I go
Got an empty feelin down inside
Still I need to stay alive
And who can tell what waits beyond this road
Im a drifter, a driftin drifter
Got no one to call my own no more
Got no strings to tie me down
Got no cause to hang around
What difference does it make which way I go
Got an empty feelin deep inside
Still I need to stay alive
Who can tell what waits beyond this road

The Drifter
Written by: neil diamond
Well, I am the drifter
I walk the highways
I cross the river
That rolls on forgotten
I sing for the living
Live for the trying
But whats it about
If you got to be trying alone
And Im the dreamer
Who climbed the mountain
Who saw forever
Across the ocean
But you found me waiting
And knew that I would
Be lost forever
I kept on trying alone
They call me the drifter
And I walk the highways
I crossed every river
That rolled on forgotten
Id sing for the living
But inside was dying
cause whats it about
If you got to be trying alone
Well, Im the drifter
Who solved the answer
And when I found you
I knew for ever
Would be for ever
And not for some time
And youd be mine
Wont have to be trying alone
Now I sing like a dreamer
And I walk like Im flying
I looked in your eyes
There was no use denying
You cared for that moment
And I knew the answer
I came for a while
And I stayed for the rest of my life
I came for a while
And I stayed for the rest of my life
I came for a while
And I stayed for the rest of my life
Well, I was the drifter
And I walked the highways
I crossed every river
That rolled on forgotten
I sang for the living
And lived for the trying
I came for a while
And I stayed for the rest of my life

Drifters Escape
Oh, help me in my weakness,
I heard the drifter say,
As they carried him from the courtroom
And were taking him away.
My trip hasnt been a pleasant one
And my time it isnt long,
And I still do not know
What it was that Ive done wrong.
Well, the judge, he cast his robe aside,
A tear came to his eye,
You fail to understand, he said,
Why must you even try?
Outside, the crowd was stirring,
You could hear it from the door.
Inside, the judge was stepping down,
While the jury cried for more.
Oh, stop that cursed jury,
Cried the attendant and the nurse,
The trial was bad enough,
But this is ten times worse.
Just then a bolt of lightning
Struck the courthouse out of shape,
And while evrybody knelt to pray
The drifter did escape.

Muse And Sorrow
An uneasy blood cascades
in the slender arteries
when you,
that I wanted to touch
disappear into twilight of memory.
Always a sense of bereavement.
why do I care for you?
Time drops like an old coin
in the hands of a drifter.
Take away my sleep
I want to wake for the whole night
and recite the unwritten poems.
Again life had been very kind to me
I am free to face
muse and sorrow.

The Homeless Heart
'I could tell you had a homeless heart, from the start, ' she said 'had been beat down in your life and left somewhere for double dead- road-side in some ravine outside Grimy Town...
I sense these things.' she said.
He said:
'Not far wrong. Now as to you I feel you been dragged through the mud, yourself experiencin' head-scratching hurts and harms, and your skiff is leeward and now adrift.' he said moving a bit closer to her, smelling of diesel, a smell she liked.
'You not far wrong, ' she said.
'And I can see your trust level dip-stick is very low. for men like me.' He said
'Very low.' she said.
'So what can man like me then offer a woman like you? And vici versa.' he said. 'Seems natural for us to powwow and cozy up, nothing carnal you understand, but understanding can come of it.'
'I don't know' she said, 'hurt and hurt added together seems to me just adds up to more pain.'
“Could be, ” he said “You could be right. But then I was always taught to believe in miracles, you? ”
“I was taught' she said 'but never got my fair share of that miracle thing I think.”
“Never too late” he said, “never too late.”
“Yeah maybe” she said, “but I would be dead of boredom waiting on all that and that ain’t enough excitement for me in this life. All my excitements have been gin soaked in wounded pride.”
'How do you go by? ” she said
“They say my name is Rory, but I am not sure.”
'Not sure? Now that is what I call a bad line and a low level of willingness to engage and commit if I ever heard.”
“Didn't say nothing about commit, ” he said.
'Just referring to this here conversation.” She said “What do you want me to give you a name? '
“You can' he said, 'and what name would you choose? '
“Don't know” she said. Maybe 'Drifter' that seems right. What do you think? '
'Ok by me he said as long as you add to 'Mr. Drifter' I got to have my respect since I don’t have my memory anymore.'
“Do tell.' she said and then took a long look at him sideways.
'No memory you say? '. she said.
'Hit on the head and left in a ravine, true.'
Anne took another long look at him and she could see he was telling the truth.

Once A Road
I am a road
Long ago well tread,
Those who upon me have ever travelled
Are now amongst the dead -
None anymore trod my path
Nor this way pass,
I alone every day
Continue wandering upon my way -
Once I was a road
Moving big and heavy loads,
Now merely a trail
No one recalls my tale -
But I know somewhere way out there
Miles away where few can see,
Over the hill, beyond the bend
Is a fellow drifter... looking for me -

Drifter
Im just a drifter
Ill stay until you try to tie me down
Im not a quitter, baby
Id like to stay and see the whole thing go down.
Dont try to tell me
What I gotta do to fit
Dont try to rescue me,
Im gonna go with my ship.
What about you, did I ever take a thing from you?
What about me, how do I know that your love is true?
What about you, how can I count on you to count on me?
I like to drive my car
If Ive got someplace to go
I like to feel the wheel
Put down the top and let it roll.
Dont try to fence me in,
Dont try to slow me down
Dont try to speed me up,
Or tie my feet down to the ground.
What about you, did I ever take a thing from you?
What about me, how do I know that your love is true?
What about you, how can I count on you to count on me?
Im just a drifter
Ill stay until you try to tie me down
Dont try to rescue me,
Dont try to rescue me
I like to feel the wheel,
I like to feel the wheel
I like to feel the wheel.

Today No Comprehension Comes
My tomorrow,
Will come to me to exist.
And will become your yesterday...
I have already visited.
Today no comprehension comes.
The 'now' that should be lived...
Isn't done by everyone.
Some choose to sit,
And reminisce the past.
With hopes to grasp from time gone...
Something that will last,
To hold onto forever.
And forever is a myth.
Like wishing to breathe life...
Into that which has moved on!
But my tomorrow,
Will come to me to exist.
And will become your yesterday...
I have already visited.
That's why you think of me as a drifter.
And I must admit...
It would be useless to argue,
With you.
Since your point of view,
Is one I have left behind.

Modern Day Hobo
i've been walking this old road
for too damned long.
i know every turn,
and every sign.
i've fallen, got back up,
i know every puddle, every stone.
i've searched every alley,
i've paid the cost by time.
a modern day hobo,
a drifter, a singer, and a fool.
a friend to the end,
a crutch and a tool.
my wings are dirty,
and my heart paid the debt.
the feeling you remember,
i'm the face you forget...
i've climbed your mountains,
i've crossed your rivers.
fought your battles,
i've lost your wars.
i've been a user and a taker,
a healer and a giver.
the bandage on your wounds,
the key to your door.
a modern day hobo,
a drifter, a singer, and a fool.
a friend to the end,
a crutch and a tool.
my wings are dirty,
my heart paid the debt.
i'm the feeling you remember,
the face you forget...

A Poem For My Little Lady
She's young and soft and kind
And she deserves a who-ole lot be-etter
Than a guitar pickin' drifter
Who never ga-a-ave a damn
And if loving me is all she ever wants
I'm gonna le-et her
And I'll try to be the ki-ind of ma-a-an
She thinks I-I am
She makes those little kitten sou-ou-ounds
And trembles when I-I lo-ove her
She makes me feel so bi-ig and stro-ong and mea-hean
She whispers how she cannot wai-ai-ait
To be my baby-y's mo-other
She's the only glimpse of God I've ever seen
Her mama should have war-arned her
Never take up wi-ith a po-oet
For poet's trave-el rocky roa-oa-oads
In search of tru-uth in life
I'm the only blemish on her virgin soul
But she don't know-ow it
And I thank the Lord she's lyin' gentle
By my si-ide to-night....

Still Searching
Im a drifter who has lost his way
And Im still searching for my dream
A wandering nomad with no home to stay
Just like a gypsy or a refugee
Lookin at another sign for another town
Wondering if Im ever gonna settle down
Or am I gonna keep on searchin till my dying day
Chorus:
Still searching, still searching, still lookin, all alone
Till I find myself a home
Still searching, still searching, just like a rolling stone
Destination still unknown
When all my energy starts letting me down
I get this feeling Ill be still wandering round
Still searching, still workin, still lookin
Until I find a way
This world is full of restless souls
Sleeping rough and living day to day
Drifters who left families wondering why they went away
Perhaps thats how I wanna be
While Im looking for some peace of mind
How can I find security?
A restless spirit who cant reach his goal
Cant find a home until Ive found my soul
Still hitchin rides and lookin for a place to go
Chorus
Still searching, still searching, still searching
Until my dying day, oh yeah
Why? yeah
Surprise, surprise
Still searching, still workin, still lookin
Until I find my way
Im a drifter who has lost his way
And Im still searching for my dream

Singapore Sonnet
Was once my fancy turned to painted charms
And oriental spells abducted me.
In smoke of incense swirling like a sea
I languished in the warmth of other arms;
In tropic air beneath the swaying palms;
And this I thought would be my destiny,
Until another came to set me free.
True love they say, the restless drifter calms,
For certainty then in my mind it dwelt.
I saw her there, to all but she was blind;
The one love with whose heart mine too would bind,
And in my heart the joy of love I felt;
The twisting road, to happiness would wind,
As there before her loveliness I knelt.

Lift Me Up Like You've Plucked a Buttercup
When you come around finding you have found,
You've settled down.
With slowed jets ready to quit your lippin'
And prepared to sit and begin to listen'...
You've done shifted from a drifter position.
And it's there to be gripped!
All that life has blessed you with!
ooo-ooo
Many in fits can't handle what they get.
And they seek partnerships...
That end in arguments,
Gone ballistic.
Left in realistic lethal pieces.
Lift me up!
Like you've plucked a buttercup,
From your weaving...
Through the weeds you've been sneezing.
Lift me up!
Like you've plucked a buttercup,
From your weaving...
Through the weeds you've been breathing.
Just leave don't mention...
Any attitude you've got,
That's dropped you mopin'!
Take a little whiff of me I'll free you easy.
I'm that destiny you need.
Lift me up!
Like you've plucked a buttercup,
From your weaving...
Through the weeds you've been sneezing.
Lift me up!
Like you've plucked a buttercup,
From your weaving...
Through the weeds you've been breathing.
When you come around finding you have found,
You've settled down.
With slowed jets ready to quit your lippin'
And prepared to sit and begin to listen'...

Lift me up!

From your weaving...
Through the weeds you've been sneezing.
Lift me up!
Like you've plucked a buttercup,
From your weaving...
Through the weeds you've been breathing.
ooo-ooo
Just Lift me up!
Like you've plucked a buttercup,
From your weaving...
Through the weeds you've been sneezing.

Like you've plucked a buttercup,

Just The Wind!
in my dreams...
quite often i am wolf,
running with the pack,
howling in the moonlight!
sometimes a hawk,
gliding spiraled unchained skies...
an old bluesman,
sittin' on a porch pickin'.
a half naked priest,
chanting o'er stormy seas.
a poet, prisoner, woman giving birth,
a man hanged for wrong reasons.
a lover killed by a jealous blade.
a bent over man picking crops,
in someone else's fields...
a drifter, and a searcher,
and on a good night....
just the wind!

The Ride
Well I was thumbing my way from Montgomery
Had my guitar on my back
When a stranger pulled up beside me, in a antique Cadillac
He was dressed like 1950
Half drunk and hollow eyed
Said its a long walk to Nashville would you like a ride son?
Well I climbed up in the front seat
And he turned on the radio
And them sad old songs coming outta them speakers was solid country gold
Then I noticed the stranger was ghost white pale
When he asked me for a light
And I knew there was something strange about this ride
Chorus
He said drifter can you make folks cry when you play and sing
Have you paid your dues?
Can you moan the blues?
Can you bend them guitar strings?
He said boy can you make folks feel what you feel inside?
Cause if your big star bound let me warn you it's a long hard ride
He cried just south of Nashville
And he turned that car around
He said "this is where you get off boy"
'Cause I'm goin' back to Alabam'
Well I climbed outta that Cadillac
And I said mister many thanks
He said you don't have to call me mister, mister
The whole world calls me Hank
Chorus x2
He said drifter can you make folks cry when you play and sing
Have you paid your dues?
Can you moan the blues?
Can you bend them guitar strings?
He said boy can you make folks feel what you feel inside?
Cause if your big star bound let me warn you it's a long hard ride
Well if you're big star bound let me warn ya, its a long hard ride
If you're big star bound........let me warn ya

Swaying
A chocolaty moon was rising.
I have lost my riverbed.
Accuser has become accused.
The hangman has shifted
the ground while glistening
in moonlight. Oxymoronic?
Eponym exited the lips of a drone fly.
A flotilla of tears
dies in an eye of a storm.
An audacity of a drifter
to stop the promiscuous honors
of strangers in death.
Only night-bloomers will watch
the sunrise in eternal lonliness.
The roots will always stay in dark.
