Lil' Boys, Tiny Birds and BB Guns

One little wide-eyed boy
One tiny bright-eyed bird
One new little “Red Ryder” bb gun
One tearful choked-back word

The word was “noooo! ! ”
Both a plea and refusal in one
A heart-rending realization of
A deed that could not be undone

“Sorry! I’m so, so, sorry! ”
Sobbed the sad little boy
As he watched once-bright eyes
Slowly glazing

Tiny head slowly drooping
Now dull eyes sightlessly gazing
But the die alas
Was coldly cast

Twas the first time in life
the boy had to bury something
But It would’na
be the last

Time passes
people change
Inexorably, we pass
from stage to stage

And little boys
with little toys
Begin to grow up (sadly)
and come of age

My Sad Eyed Angel

You gaze at me
with your sad eyes
seemingly to be
as old as time
a dull but bright beauty
made of agonizing crystal
enough to make me cry
you look so scared
so painful
but i never want to change you
my sad eyed angel
gaze upon me
with honey orbs
the smile on your face doesnt match
there pools of sadness
oceans of agony
crashing in those eyes
and i get to see them everyday
my beautiful
sad eyed angel.

Wild Eyed Southern Boys

Its a hot night at the juke joint
And the bands pumpin rhythm and blues
Gonna spill a little rock and roll blood tonight
Gonna make some front page news
And the ladies hate the violence
Still they never seem to look away
Cause they love those
Wild eyed southern boys
Wild eyed boys
Wild eyed southern boys
Its a southern point of honor
You got a get right in on the action
You can hear the outlaws holler
Fight for the lady in black
And she's just one in a million
But she's all I need tonight
Cause she loves those
Wild eyed southern boys
Wild eyed boys
Wild eyed southern boys
Wild eyed boys
Oohhh yeah
Wild eyed boys
A man of wealth and power
Is out on the dance hall floor
He got a champagne Eldorado parked outside the door
And he's looking for a honky tonk angel
But he don't stand a chance in hell
Cause he ain't no wild eyed southern boy
Wild eyed boy
Wild eyed southern boy
Wild eyed
Wild eyed southern boy
Wild eyed southern boys
Wild eyed boy
Wild eyed southern boy
Wild eyed boy
Wild eyed boy
Wild eyed southern boys
Wild eyed boys

Ages Flicker in the Hot Fire

Ages flicker in the hot fire
where I sit in the bar
time passes slowly hour-by-hour,

my face reflects in the glass, somewhat confused
the flames jump bright orange, blue and white,
ages flicker in the hot fire

with shades playing on the wall of the fireplace
and deeper something fries like on a spit,
time passes slowly hour-by-hour

someone complains about his wife, wants to hire prostitutes
while a couple sit down at a table with a candle,
ages flicker in the hot fire,

outside the thunder bashes down, my whisky is very expensive,
the candle in front of me burns down to its end,
time passes slowly hour-by-hour

then I see you, pretty and my match
I cannot avoid your eyes,
ages flicker in the hot fire
time passes slowly hour-by-hour.

Heart is tiny, Hopes are high

Heart is tiny, Hopes are high
On top of the world, wants to fly.

Wants to surf, in mid of the ocean;
Wants to climb, Highest the mountain;
Always willing, to touch the sky.
Heart is tiny, Hopes are high

Wants to shine, like a bright star;
Wants to race in, the worlds' best car;
Lighter as feather, wants to glide.
Heart is tiny, Hopes are high

All things happen, On its commands;
Every thing comes to, When it demands;
Whole beauty of world, wants in eyes.
Heart is tiny, Hopes are high

Better if it does some good deed
Helps the poor and who are in need
Accepts the truth and denies the lies.
Heart is tiny, Hopes are high

My Wild-Eyed Child

My wide-eyed child
So sweet are you
Innocent and pure
Untouched by the filth of man
A Baby's Breath for you

My wild-eyed child
With eyes so bright they shine
Open to the world
Open to the universe
A Red Carnation for you

My sleepy-eyed child
Close your little eyes
Drift off to rest
Sleep soundly and well
A White Poppy for you

On the open plain (Catena Rondo)

Some flowers rise up bright from tiny seeds,
blooms appear with heads searching for the sun;
on this earth so it's been since time begun,
some flowers rise up bright from tiny seeds,

blooms appear with heads searching for the sun
they rejoice over a day that is new
are fresh with the glistening morning dew;
blooms appear with heads searching for the sun

they rejoice over a day that is new
as bees and butterflies flutter along
birds do sing the happiest kind of song
they rejoice over a day that is new,

as bees and butterflies flutter along
wild deer graze at the soft tender green grass
while they in massive herds do slowly pass
as bees and butterflies flutter along

wild deer graze at the soft tender green grass
some flowers rise up bright from tiny seeds
grow to strength in a world full of big weeds,
wild deer graze at the soft tender green grass,

some flowers rise up bright from tiny seeds,
blooms appear with heads searching for the sun;
on this earth so it's been since time begun,
some flowers rise up bright from tiny seeds.

Gazing At The Sky

As I lie upon my rooftop, gazing at the sky
The only thing my mind will wonder is why, why, why
Why are there no birds soaring through the sky
The only thing my eyes can spy are black bats dashing by, doing the things they do
Why is the Moon so bright tonight
Perhaps to keep me stirring and gaping at the blue

As I lie upon my rooftop, gazing at the sky
Listening to the sounds of the night while time goes slowly by
The night sky is a wonderful thing that will remain until after I die
The night sky is a story written by the stars
Images from long ago come to me from afar

As I lie upon my rooftop, gazing at the sky
I can feel the moisture in the air and though it is cold, I continue to glare
I stare toward the east where the sun is soon to rise
I stare toward the east where the brightest star does lie
And I hear the rustle of the leaves as they dance in the breeze

As I lie upon my rooftop, gazing at the sky
The tiny twinkling lights are like a million fireflies
The night sky is a canvas with hues of black and white
It tickles all my senses. It’s such a wondrous sight
It whispers “Come and play, ” but I know I don’t have too much time before it wilts away

As I lie upon my rooftop, gazing at the sky
The stars begin to fade anew and the sun begins to rise
This feat does cause me pain, for I cannot see this artwork again
I cannot see this portrayal once more until the sun goes down

As I lie upon my rooftop, gazing at the sky
I realize I have had no sleep as the sun glitters in my eye
The bright beams of the brilliant sun streaming in my face
So different than the moonbeams dancing slowly place to place

As I lie upon my rooftop, gazing at the sky
I hear my stomach rumbling like a freight train passing by
The smell of bacon as it sizzles penetrates my nose
As the promised taste of pancakes makes me get up on my toes

As I stand here in the kitchen, hungry as can be
I could eat a herd of horses or a flock of geese, you see
But instead I’ll just have pancakes and bacon on the side
And then I’ll try to get some sleep until the night again arrives

0296 Casting for a new production

The second act went really well tonight,
pity it’s so near the end of the run,
it’s good enough for a West End transfer;
they’re a good bunch when we work together

no thanks, not tonight old man –
got some TV ad lines to learn,
well it’s good money for old rope…
seeyer chizmate

make-up off, stage door chat –
after a good perf., who wants to pub it,
hear yet again about how they triumphed together
in Romeo and Juliet god how many years ago
looking at them now – obscene..

*

When people used to tell me
how old people sat lost to the world
in a golden haze of memory,
I used to think
borING..! not me, not on your life…

but it’s not quite like that:
a touch of unexpected thought
may clothe loved actors in a new-stitched garb –
before you took the stage and they
were cast by you as your supporting roles –

they too were Romeo and Juliet,
throwing the curtains open on their red-eyed dawn…
and you, not even yet the twinkle
in the future’s eye…
they’d played the serving-maid, the page,
the jaunty clown, the flirt, the on-off, bright-eyed savagery -
the toilers in the burning, dusty sun,
the heroes in a life of war and peace,
had hopes you never knew or asked,
and then, invited you to join their cast…

these were such unknown people, just
as unimportant as you are seen as, now…
but loved, by those you never knew or thought of…

now, in your lean and slippered age
you can re-read their lines,
these fellow actors whom you thought
because they loved you, that you were their life…
now, as you re-write the stories of their lives,
cast them as beloved strangers

Baby Tortoise

You know what it is to be born alone,
Baby tortoise!
The first day to heave your feet little by little from the shell,
Not yet awake,
And remain lapsed on earth,
Not quite alive.

A tiny, fragile, half-animate bean.

To open your tiny beak-mouth, that looks as if it would never open,

Like some iron door;
To lift the upper hawk-beak from the lower base
And reach your skinny little neck
And take your first bite at some dim bit of herbage,
Alone, small insect,
Tiny bright-eye,
Slow one.

To take your first solitary bite
And move on your slow, solitary hunt.
Your bright, dark little eye,
Your eye of a dark disturbed night,
Under its slow lid, tiny baby tortoise,
So indomitable.
No one ever heard you complain.

You draw your head forward, slowly, from your little wimple

And set forward, slow-dragging, on your four-pinned toes, Rowing slowly forward.
Whither away, small bird?
Rather like a baby working its limbs,
Except that you make slow, ageless progress
And a baby makes none.

The touch of sun excites you,
And the long ages, and the lingering chill
Make you pause to yawn,
Opening your impervious mouth,
Suddenly beak-shaped, and very wide, like some suddenly gaping pincers;
Soft red tongue, and hard thin gums,
Then close the wedge of your little mountain front,
Your face, baby tortoise.

Do you wonder at the world, as slowly you turn your head in its wimple
And look with laconic, black eyes?
Or is sleep coming over you again,
The non-life?

You are so hard to wake.

Are you able to wonder?
Or is it just your indomitable will and pride of the first life
Looking round
And slowly pitching itself against the inertia
Which had seemed invincible?

The vast inanimate,
And the fine brilliance of your so tiny eye,
Challenger.

Nay, tiny shell-bird,
What a huge vast inanimate it is, that you must row against,
What an incalculable inertia.

Challenger,
Little Ulysses, fore-runner,
No bigger than my thumb-nail,
Buon viaggio.

All animate creation on your shoulder,
Set forth, little Titan, under your battle-shield.

The ponderous, preponderate,
Inanimate universe;
And you are slowly moving, pioneer, you alone.

How vivid your travelling seems now, in the troubled sunshine,
Stoic, Ulyssean atom;
Suddenly hasty, reckless, on high toes.

Voiceless little bird,
Resting your head half out of your wimple
In the slow dignity of your eternal pause.
Alone, with no sense of being alone,
And hence six times more solitary;
Fulfilled of the slow passion of pitching through immemorial ages
Your little round house in the midst of chaos.

Over the garden earth,
Small bird,
Over the edge of all things.

Traveller,
With your tail tucked a little on one side
Like a gentleman in a long-skirted coat.

All life carried on your shoulder,
Invincible fore-runner.

A ballerina wins my heart! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! !

A beautiful ballerina full of grace
Tip toed on stage, in white lace.
Hair pulled back, a small crown in hair,
Oh, she looked so winsome and fair.

Other day was kicking her tiny legs on bed,
Wearing a tiny bonnet and dress in red.
She crawled in my courtyard on her knees,
She loved all the attention I could see.

Now, here she stood, so poised on stage,
I watched with joy, disbelief and dazed.
Step by step with others she moved on her toes,
Amazing… how fast children learn and grow.

My heart beat fast seeing little Anika dance.
But back in the green room she joyfully pranced.
Kissed her and left to keep another engagement.
Next day, she chided why you missed the final act.

I was looking for you when I made the bow,
Before I could reply she was creating row.
How did she manage to stay quiet and act
All grown up…she will be six next month in fact.

Time Passes Slowly

Time passes slowly up here in the mountains,
We sit beside bridges and walk beside fountains,
Catch the wild fishes that float through the stream,
Time passes slowly when youre lost in a dream.
Once I had a sweetheart, she was fine and good-lookin,
We sat in her kitchen while her mama was cookin,
Stared out the window to the stars high above,
Time passes slowly when youre searchin for love.
Aint no reason to go in a wagon to town,
Aint no reason to go to the fair.
Aint no reason to go up, aint no reason to go down,
Aint no reason to go anywhere.
Time passes slowly up here in the daylight,
We stare straight ahead and try so hard to stay right,
Like the red rose of summer that blooms in the day,
Time passes slowly and fades away.

Baby Boy

Time Well Spent
See tiny fingers and tiny toes,
Bright baby eyes, cute baby nose;
Hear baby gurgles and baby sighs,
As Mom and Dad sing lullabies.
Life is changed, but that's okay;
It's fun to spend glad hours each day,
Taking time for all the good
That comes along with parenthood

Woe To All The Masters of Deceit

God has given both blessings and warnings throughout His Holy Word,
However it looks as though by many people He goes virtually unheard.

Woe is but a tiny word in Scripture that echoes warnings very loud,
But this tiny little word has been ignored by a very deceptive crowd,

In Isaiah God had said woe to those who call good evil and evil good,
They may have read these words, but it appears they never understood.

He says woe to all who put light for darkness and darkness for light,
Yet, they do things in the day that are even shameful in the night.

These men parade their wicked sin during the daytime with no shame,
And to add to their sin they say it's being done in God's Holy Name.

God says woe to those who put sweet for bitter and put bitter sweet,
But they go on leading the ignorant astray through spiritual deceit.

Christ's warning to all who use sin to cause a little one to stumble,
Was meant to change a hardened heart to one that's soft and humble.

For we must remember that without holiness no one will see The Lord,
So today to all those who go astray, this must again be underscored.

We are told to test the spirits for we can not believe in every one,
And Eternity is a long time alone, for a brief moment of wicked fun.

Christ said woe to the world and to all men who cause people to sin,
For to them it would have been better if their life never did begin.

Loving You Forever

The sun is slowly setting.
The sunset is magnificent with the different shades of pink and red spread across the sky.
I touch your cheek and notice just how pale it really is.
The sun is slowly setting.
My smile falters as you hush my voice and murmur time is short.
My mind is telling me to leave, but my heart is pleading me to stay.
The sun is slowly setting.
You grab my hand and draw me close to you.
I look into your eyes, and search for something evil, but all I see is love.
The sun is slowly setting.
I lean my head against your chest and take in all your love.
You wrap your arms around me and tell me not to be afraid.
The sun is slowly setting.
Shadows are falling all around us, enclosing us in darkness.
An eerie breeze causes a chill to scurry up my spine.
The sun is slowly setting.
The time has come; you tilt my face up towards yours and tell me that you love me.
My heart is beating fast now as I say it in return.
The sun is slowly setting.
Your eyes are open and I see that they are masked with fear, and yet, love still shines through.
You smile and a flow of dawning realization rushes throughout my system.
The sun is slowly setting.
I try to scream, but my speech has been impaired.
I try to run, but my feet remain in place.
The sun is slowly setting.
You tell me not to worry, and that everything’s all right.
You take my hand in yours and move it to your heart.
The sun is slowly setting.
I feel myself relax as I tilt my head, allowing my neck to be vulnerable.
I feel a prick of pain against my neck, and then a rush of warmth and love overcomes me.
The sun is slowly setting.
The coldness is no longer my concern, for I feel no breeze against my pale skin.
Never will anything be my concern, for now we are together, for all eternity.
The sun is slowly setting.
At last the sun has subsided into the earth.
Above us, the sky is black, and at peace.

Blindness

In a stage-coach, where late I chanced to be,
A little quiet girl my notice caught;
I saw she looked at nothing by the way,
Her mind seemed busy on some childish thought.

I with an old man's courtesy addressed
The child, and called her pretty dark-eyed maid,
And bid her turn those pretty eyes and see
The wide extended prospect. 'Sir,' she said,

'I cannot see the prospect, I am blind.'
Never did tongue of child utter a sound
So mournful, as her words fell on my ear.
Her mother then related how she found

Her child was sightless. On a fine bright day
She saw her lay her needlework aside,
And, as on such occasions mothers will,
For leaving off her work began to chide.

'I'll do it when 'tis daylight, if you please,
I cannot work, mamma, now it is night.'
The sun shone bright upon her when she spoke,
And yet her eyes received no ray of light.

Valentine's Day

Oh! I wish I were a tiny browny bird from out the south,
Settled among the alder-holts, and twittering by the stream;
I would put my tiny tail down, and put up my tiny mouth,
And sing my tiny life away in one melodious dream.

I would sing about the blossoms, and the sunshine and the sky,
And the tiny wife I mean to have in such a cosy nest;
And if some one came and shot me dead, why then I could but die,
With my tiny life and tiny song just ended at their best.

The Word and the Deed

THE Word was first, says the revelation:
Justice is older than error or strife;
The Word preceded the Incarnation
As symbol and type of law and life.
And always so are the mighty changes:
The word must be sown in the heart like seed;
Men's hands must tend it, their lives defend it,
Till it burst into flower as a deathless Deed.

The primal truth neither dies nor slumbers,
But lives as the test of the common right,
That the laws proclaimed by the sworded numbers
May stand arraigned in the people's sight.
The Word is great, and no Deed is greater,
When both are of God, to follow or lead;
But, alas, for the truth when the Word comes later,
With questioned steps, to sustain the Deed.

Not the noblest acts can be true solutions;
The soul must be sated before the eye,
Else the passionate glory of revolutions
Shall pass like the flames that flash and die.
But forever the gain when the heart's convictions,
Rooted in nature the masses lead;
The cries of rebellion are benedictions
When the Word has flowered in a perfect Deed.

Reading Out Loud

As I stood up in front of the crowd
They all sat still and silent
Their eyes and ears aimed like rifles on me
And I slowly read my poem aloud

My knees shook with every spoken lyric
My lips quivered as I couldn't stop
They listened intently, focused
As if my every word was the word of a mystic

Heavy emotions make me weightless
My eyes are shaking and my heart is too
My poem is almost finished
But the words aren't bitter and tasteless

I look at the crowd's emotionless faces as I finish reading
Their monotone lips curve upward as they clap
I walk off the stage nervously trying to maintain balance
And in my head the words of the poem repeat

Life's Challenges

The world oh so bright in my eyes
Now seems to be so grey

I'm still not sure
What turn of events
Caused my world's color
To slowly but surely fade away

It's funny how one moment
Everything can be going your way
Then all of a sudden a storm starts brewing
And when lightning strikes nothings ever the same

Amusing isn't it?
How one moment you could be flying sky high
Then the next moment
You're on your face on the ground

Isn't it funny how everything around you
Even your heart can fall apart
And never even make a sound?

The realization never dawned on me
Until the color from my world disappeared
That one or two happy moments
In this life is all some are spared

This realization in itself
Has prepared me
For the next time lightning strikes

So next time I'll be ready
For whatever challenge is thrown at me by this life
