The Great Eastern
The bones of the great and troubled ship
Lay under a greying sky,
I'd travelled on up to Liverpool
To see the monster die,
The wreckers were ripping the hull apart,
Were opening wounds of old,
Not only the bones of a rusty ship
But the bones of a tale untold!
My mind went back those thirty years
To the time when we built the ship,
When I was a poor, young riveter,
Just out on my maiden trip,
I'd found some digs in Millwall,
Right down in the Isle of Dogs,
Where the Thames sweeps on forever
In a miasma of mist and fogs.
I moved on in with Ted and Jane,
The Lamptreys they were called,
He was a man of forty years,
She was just twenty four,
But Ted was grim and serious,
While Jane was as light as froth,
While he was around, he held her down,
I thought her a fluttering moth.
She'd laugh and dance, and prance around
When Ted was not at home,
He liked his pint of Guinness Stout,
His beer, a head of foam,
He said that he'd worked a mighty thirst
For Isambard Brunel,
Whose dream of the great Leviathan
Rose up from the depths of hell.
I got me a job with Ted down there,
Riveting iron plates,
That ship was the first with a double hull
With an inner working space,
We belted the red-hot rivets in
And flattened the ends across,
We'd work in pairs, and the light was scarce
In the depths of that albatross.
Whenever old Ted would seek the pub
I'd go on home to Jane,
I thought that she must have feelings,
But the love that I felt was pain,
For I never dared to voice it, though
She must have looked in my eyes,
To see the way that my feelings lay
It was way beyond disguise.
Then Ted had begun to drink too much,
He said it was getting him down,
All he could hear were the hammers,
Hammers, belting his head around.
They chimed all day in his weary head
They rang all night in his sleep,
Drowned out the sound of our laughter
Like an echo relayed from the deep.
He belted Jane and he made her cry
While I had nothing to say,
I thought that I couldn't come in-between
A man and his wife that way,
She saw my eyes, and they said it all,
I'd sit, and begin to grieve,
I just couldn't bear the thought that he
Might say that I had to leave!
The Eastern Company went bust,
Went broke in '56,
And we were all laid off, until
The finances were fixed,
We spent some terrible weeks at home,
Living on toast and tea,
Wondering how to pay the rent
And arguing constantly.
They hired us back, began again,
But Ted and I were sour,
For Jane had begun to talk to me,
Ignored him by the hour,
We worked down deep in the hull this time
But spoke not a friendly word,
With just the clash of the hammers as
The heat of our tempers soared.
He worked inside, in the inner space
As I beat the rivets in,
He'd disappear in the iron walls
To the clash of the hammer's din,
My mind began to play me tricks,
My hammer felt like lead,
And then as he peered on out one day,
I hit him across the head.
He fell back into that inner space
With neither a scream, nor curse,
I knew if I pulled him out again
There'd be calls for a horse and hearse.
I fitted a whole new iron plate
And riveted it in place,
Wiped the blood from my hammer,
And the sweat from my trembling face.
That night, I told poor Jane I'd left him
Outside the Crown and Heart,
She didn't say much 'til midnight when
He hadn't returned to the hearth,
For days, she hurried around to seek
Her husband in every lane,
But only I knew the reason why
He'd never come home again!
For months, I hoped and I prayed that
She would fall in my loving arms,
And weep her sorrows away with me
While sharing some of her charms.
But Jane was bitter and fretful, she
Would glare at me in the dark,
And nothing would raise her spirits now,
The light had gone from her spark.
The ship had neared completion when
I offered my hand to her,
'You must have guessed that I love you, Jane? '
She turned on me with a curse.
'You think to replace my husband? Hah!
I wouldn't take you on a whim,
For Ted was really my one true love,
I'll keep myself true to him! '
The ship was launched, and I left that place,
I signed as one of the crew,
I'd killed a man for a dream, like sand
That had trickled my fingers through.
I dreamt that Ted was alive, not dead
And clanking his length of chain,
In the bowels of Brunel's Great Eastern
And calling me out, by name!
That ship was cursed from the day it launched,
When one of the boilers blew,
As it crossed the Atlantic swell it lost
A paddle-wheel or two,
The rudder snapped at the iron post,
A reef put her in tow,
I knew full well that the hounds of hell
Were trapped there, down below!
I'm old and tired, as I watch the iron
Now stripped from the Eastern's side,
When suddenly there's a shout goes up:
'There's a skeleton inside! '
Now back in my lonely boarding house
I write this in despair,
In death, he waits with a hammer of hate,
Ted clanks his chains down there!

Island Of Souls
Billy was born within sight of the shipyard
First son of a riveters son
And billy was raised as the ship grew a shadow
Her great hull would blot out the light of the sun
And six days a week he would watch his poor father
A working man live like a slave
Hed drink every night and hed dream of a future,
Of money he never would save
And billy would cry when he thought of the future
Soon came a day when the bottle was broken
They launched the great ship out to sea
He felt hed been left on a desolate shore
To a future he desperately wanted to flee
What else was there for a shipbuilders son
A new ship to be built, new work to be done
One day he dreamed of the ship in the world
It would carry his father and he
To a place they would never be found
To a place far away from this town.
Trapped in the cage of the skeleton ship
All the workmen suspended like flies
Caught in the flare of acetylene light
A working man works till the industry dies
And billy would cry when he thought if the future
Then what they call an industrial accident
Crushed those it couldnt forgive
They brought billys father back home in an ambulance
A brass watch, a cheque, maybe three weeks to live,
And what else was there for a riveters son
A new ship to be built, new work to be done
That night, he dreamed of the ship in the world
It would carry his father and he
To a place they could never be found
To a place far away from this town,
A newcastle ship without coals
They would sail to the island of souls.

When The Time Is Right
Gerald Milne)
When the time is right
I will come back for you
To hold you through the night
Just like I always do
Oh, Jane, take me to your room again
Why can't we learn how to love and let go
One more time
Oh, Jane, hold me in your arms again
Don't you feel the heat of the night deep inside, oh, Jane
When the time is right
And you reach out for me
I'll run back to your side
Just where I used to be, oh, Jane
You can take the pain away
Say we'll be together once more
Please open the door, oh, Jane
Oh, Jane, hold me in your arms again
Will we ever learn how to love
Learn how to love and let go
Oh, Jane, hold me in your arms again
Weill we ever learn how to love
Learn how to love and let go
When the time is right
I will come back for you
With arms to hold you tight
Just like I always do
Oh, Jane, take me to your room again
Because I believe the heat of the night is still burning bright, deep
inside
Oh, Jane, hold me in your arms again
Tell me if you want me to go
I'll leave you alon, oh, Jane
Oh, Jane, take me to your room again
Can't you feel the heat of the night is still burning bright, deep inside
Oh, Jane, take me to your room again
Why can't we learn how to love
Learn how to love and let go

Sweet Jane
Standin' on the corner, suit case in my hand, Jack is in his coat, Jane is in her vest, and, me, I'm in a rock 'n' roll band. Riding in a Stutz-Bearcat, Jim. Ya know, those were different times. The poets, they studied rules of verse, and the ladies, they rolled their eyes.Sweet Jane! Sweet Jane! Sweet Jane!
Now, Jack, he is a banker, and Jane, she is a clerk. Both of them save their monies, when they come home from work. Sittin' down there by the fire, the radio does play. The classic music is, "The March of Wooden Soldiers", and you can heard Jack say, Sweet Jane, Sweet Jane, Sweet Jane.
Some people like to go out dancin'. Now other people they go to work. There's even some evil mothers, they'll tell you life's just made out of dirt. That women, they never really faint, and villains always blink their eyes. That childeren are the only ones who blush, and life is just to die. That every one who ever had a heart...that wouldn't turn round and break it, anyone that played a part, whooa, and wouldn't turn round and hate it.Sweet Jane, Sweet Jane, Sweet Jane.
Sweet Jane! (Sweet Jane) Sweet Jane! (Sweet Jane)...Sweet Jane! (Sweet Jane)...(Sweet Jane)...(Sweet Jane)...(Sweet Jane).

Mary Jane
Now when I go to work, I work all day,
Always turns out the same.
When I bring home my hard-earned pay
I spend my money all on mary jane.
Mary jane, mary jane, lord, my mary jane.
Oh if a man should look tame now, mean and mature,
They all turn out the same.
cause they cant do nothing to make a man feel good
Like my old mary jane.
Mary jane, mary jane, lord, my mary jane.
Now I walk in the street now lookin for a friend
One that can lend me some change.
And he never questions my reason why,
cause he too loves mary jane.
Mary jane, mary jane, lord, my mary jane.
Well, I have known women that wanted no man,
Some that wanted to stay.
But I never knew what happened in this world
Till I met up with mary jane,
Mary jane, mary jane, lord my mary jane.
Oh, when Im feelin lonesome and Im feelin blue,
Theres only one way to change.
Now I walk down the street now lookin for a man,
One that knows my mary jane,
Mary jane, mary jane, lord my mary jane.

See Jane Run
(porter howell/tim nichols)
Dick and jane dont talk anymore, jane lays awake
Wishin it could be like it was before
Finally one night, she got tough
Dick came home, and she was packin her stuff
See jane run, see dick cry
Hes standin in the street with his hands in the air
Goin why jane, why
She dont look back, shes seen enough
Close the book, the storys done, see jane run
Dicks tore up, deep down inside
Jane feels good, there aint a tear in her pretty blue eyes
Red taillights, fade out of sight
Spots in the back, hes just along for the ride
See jane run, see dick cry
Hes standin in the street with his hands in the air
Goin why jane, why
She dont look back, shes seen enough
Close the book, the storys done, see jane run
See jane run, see dick cry

Paul McNeely
Dear Jane! dear winsome Jane!
How you stole in the room (where I lay so ill)
In your nurse's cap and linen cuffs,
And took my hand and said with a smile:
"You are not so ill -- you'll soon be well."
And how the liquid thought of your eyes
Sank in my eyes like dew that slips
Into the heart of a flower.
Dear Jane! the whole McNeely fortune
Could not have bought your care of me,
By day and night, and night and day;
Nor paid for your smile, nor the warmth of your soul,
In your little hands laid on my brow.
Jane, till the flame of life went out
In the dark above the disk of night
I longed and hoped to be well again
To pillow my head on your little breasts,
And hold you fast in a clasp of love --
Did my father provide for you when he died,
Jane, dear Jane?

Red Streak
It was a dry, sunny day in June.
that fact she would never forget.
It was the day she lost her partner
to a surfeit of regret.
She had taken their little daughter,
the product of donated sperm,
to the nearby Hillside Park
and picnic'd on the side of a berm.
Jane had declined to come with them.
Jane was in one of her 'moods'.
Perhaps she shouldn't have left her,
but she thought Jane just needed to brood.
Jane was her beautiful partner
erratic, mercurial, bright.
Jane, who could light up the heavens
like a bolt from the blue in the night.
They returned to a silent apartment.
It was the stuff of nightmares, not dreams.
A red streak of blood in the bathroom
Her little girl started to scream.
A kind neighbor cared for her daughter
as she spoke to police in a fog.
The M.E.'s van came for the body.
Seeing Jane lifeless was odd.
Tomorrow, she must make arrangements.
She needn't bear this all alone.
It was time that she spoke with Jane's parents.
Softly weeping, she picked up the phone.

Queen Jane Approximately
Now when your mother sends back all your invitations
And your father to your sister he explains
That you're tired of yourself and all of your creations
Won't you come see me, Queen Jane?
Won't you come see me, Queen Jane?
Now the flower lady wants back what she has have lent you
And the smell of her roses does not remain
When all your children start to resent you
Won't you come see me, Queen Jane?
Won't you come see me, Queen Jane?
Now when all the clowns that you have commissioned
Have all died in battle or in vain
And you find yourself sick of all this repetition
Won't you come see me, Queen Jane?
Won't you come see me, Queen Jane?
Now when all of your advisers heave their plastic
At your feet to convince you of your pain
Trying to prove that your conclusions should be more drastic
Won't you come see me, Queen Jane?
Won't you come see me, Queen Jane?
Now when all the bandits that you turned your other cheek to
All throw down their bandannas and complain
Maybe you want somebody you don't have to speak to
Won't you come see me, Queen Jane?
Won't you come see me, Queen Jane?

The Choice
The house had stood in the forest since
The passing of George the Third,
Ivy clung to the western wall,
The pillars were cracked and scarred,
The windows were bricked and boarded up
From the days of the window tax,
And the name FitzAdam was burnt in sin
In its myriad faults and cracks.
The oaks threw shadows in early morn,
The elms threw shadows at noon,
There wasn't a single sunny wall
To be found ‘til the month of June,
And deep inside in the gloomy halls
Sat the last of the family tree,
Two aging spinsters, Jan and Jane,
And a dead man, that made three!
For Henry sat as he'd always sat
Since the day that he'd come to call,
To ask for the hand of Jan or Jane,
And arrange a Wedding Ball,
It was fifty years ago today
That he'd kept them in suspense,
For neither knew what their suitor knew
And the atmosphere was tense!
It was just a game to him, they thought,
He was going to have his fun,
He sat at the head of the table, and
He watched their features run,
The anxious looks of the elder girl,
The pleading lips of Jane,
He sat for an hour between them there
And refused to name a name!
The fire that glowed in the hearth went out,
Jane left to fetch some coal,
While Jan reached out for a sign from him
And felt that his hand was cold;
His eyes were blank as a morning mist,
His jaw had dropped to his chest,
‘What have you done - was I the one? '
Jane cried, in her distress!
But Henry, he was good and dead,
He'd reached his earthly span,
His heart had not proved big enough
To choose between Jane and Jan,
And so he sits with a secret smile
As his flesh returns to sand,
While Jan and Jane, they still complain
As they struggle to hold his hand!

Elegy For Jane Kenyon (2)
Jane is big
with death, Don
sad and kind - Jane
though she's dying
is full of mind
We talk about the table
the little walnut one
how it's like
Emily Dickinson's
But Don says No
Dickinson's
was made of iron. No
said Jane
Of flesh.

Space Monkey
Space monkey, space monkey
What you doing out there?
Why its dark as a dungeon way up in the air
Come gather round me you little monkeys and a story Ill tell
About a brave young primate, outer space knew him well
He was born at the top of a big old tree
Way back in 1953.
He could swing through the jungle and hang by his toes
Till they took him to russia cause they could I suppose
They dressed him up in a spacesuit and it started to snow
Shot him off in a rocket where no man would go
Space monkey space monkey
What you doing out there?
Why its dark as a dungeon way up in the air
Therell be no one to greet you when you get back home
No hammer or sickle youll be on your own.
He had plenty of cuban bananas and loads of spam
But he found great difficulty trying to open the can
One day he slipped on a banana peel and the ship lost control
It spun out of orbit and shot o]ut the black hole
Its been four decades now, thats nine monkey years
Thats a long time for a space monkey to confront all his fears
Space monkey space monkey
What you doing out there?
Why its dark as a dungeon way up in the air
Therell be no one to greet you when you get back home
No hammer or sickle youll be all on your own.
Space monkey, space monkey
Its time to get real
The space race is over, how does it feel
Cold wars had a heatwave, iron curtains torn down
Theyve rolled up the carpet in space monkey town
Now leningrad is petersburg and petersburgs hell
For a card-carrying monkey with a story to tell
The space monkey was reportedly last sighted about
A half a block off of red square
In a karaoke bar having a few drinks with some of his friends
There was the dog that flew sputnik
And a blind red-headed, one legged parrot
Who had done some minor research for dow chemical
They were drinking american vodka
Imported all the way from paducah, kentucky
And reportedly had their arms around each others
Shoulders singing.
Those were the days, my friend, we thought theyd never end
Space monkey, space monkey
Theres nothing to do
But its better than living in a communist zoo
Therell be no one to greet you when you get back home
No hammer or sickle youll be all on you own

Amanda Jane
Amanda Jane
Just thirteen, with wide bright smile
Across the field, she'd ride a mile.
Encampment there, with tents galore
Too much excitement... she can't ignore.
Then she see's him standing there
Young leath lad, wavy brown hair
A soldier boy who stands so tall
He's answered now, his countries call.
Amanda Jane, Amanda Jane,
A fine young soldier you have seen,
With shoulders wide and eyes gray-blue
Some day He'll ask to marry you.
For nigh four years, men fought and died
Mothers wept and Widows cried
What's left of family, moved up North
These trends of war, no longer worth.
This fine young man of twenty one
No longer carries a soldiers gun,
But now must try to ply his trade
Three years a carpenter, some money made.
Amanda Jane, Amanda Jane,
A fine young soldier you have seen
With shoulders wide and eyes gray-blue
Someday this man will marry you.
Now a young woman of nineteen
Among the young men she would preen
So far He'd travel, for her hand
And to her soldier she'd remand.
Back from Indiana to Kentucky
A blushing bride, She'd feel so lucky,
A home He'd built there just for her
And in his arms, she'd surely purr.
Amanda Jane, Amanda Jane
A fine young soldier you have seen
With shoulders wide and eyes gray-blue
This time He's finally married you.
Three boys, God blessed, this family with
A simple life, they now would live.
Builder of ships, this man became
A new frontier, Rivers to tame.
With paddle-wheelers on decline
He had to move on down the line
To deliver now a ship so tall,
Released from life....A fatal fall.
Amanda Jane, Amanda Jane,
A fine young soldier you had seen
With shoulders wide and eyes gray-blue
This day, My Love, I bury you......
................I bury You! ! !

Sweet Baby Jane
And Ill coming to say goodbye
Took inside and maids by buck-bye
More than dreams and the bottom come
When she would come back, right and well
And if you catch me Ill take your time
Ride on home in mondays own
Of this coldness in my heart
And this whole world riding home
Sweet baby jane, sweet baby jane
Sweet baby jane, sweet baby jane
And if you call, Ill come running
And if you ask, I will be given
And if you need me, I will be there
When you rush when the feelings gone
Ill give you hope, Ill give you hate
By the burdens own, by the sun but it burns on

Plain Jane
Ah, tell 'em about it Darlin'.
Here we go.
She's a waitress at her corner,
Always dancin' nine-to-five.
Well, she ain't no supermodel,
But I'm here to tell you, she's fine, (Ha, ha.)
She's so fine, Johnny.
She's like the classic girl next door,
There's somethin' 'bout her walk:
There's somethin' that goes off inside,
Each time she starts to talk.
Plain Jane,
Oh, I love her name.
She drives me insane.
She's my plain Jane.
She always gets my business,
I can't wait to ring her bell.
(Ah, I bet you can't Donnie.)
She puts a quarter in the jukebox:
Says she don't kiss an' tell.
Is that right, brother.
The way she wears that dress, (Yeah.)
It's time that I confess:
The music starts an' my heart stops,
An' I become a mess.
Plain Jane,
Oh, I love her name.
She drives me insane.
She's my plain Jane.
Nothin' fancy: she's just got everything.
She's so addicting; she's so amazing:
Can't think of anything.
Do, do, do do.
(Whoa, talk to me, plain Jane.)
Do, do, do do, do, do.
Whoa, yeah,
C'mon.
Plain Jane,
Oh, I love her name.
She drives me insane.
She's my plain Jane. (Jane, Jane.)
Plain Jane,
Oh, I love her name.
She drives me insane.
She said just call me plain Jane.
(That's right, buddy."
Plain Jane,
She's my plain Jane.
She's my plain Jane.
She's my plain, (Jane)
Whoo, she's my plain Jane.
(No, she's mine.)
