The Devil On The Tree
It was coming on up to Christmas
When I received an unusual text,
‘We're travelling round the country and
We thought we'd visit you next.'
It was signed Giselle, the cousin from Hell,
And I shook right down to my boots,
For ‘we' meant daughter Annabelle Leigh
With a reputation to suit.
I think she was sired by a Demon down
In the Seventh Circle of Hell,
She'd never been smacked, not even a tap
When she'd scream, and shout and yell,
Her mother was one of those wussy types
Who'd studied psychology,
Was into behaviour models, rather
Than putting her over her knee.
They came with their bag and baggage, said
They'd only be here for a month,
And Annabelle Leigh went on a spree
Spitting all over our lunch,
‘Now don't be naughty, ' her mother said,
‘Or you'll make your uncle mad! '
‘I hate him! ' she said, looking at me,
‘You tell him he's not my Dad! '
I thought, ‘Thank God for that! ' there are
Small mercies in this world,
And one, not being the father of
This hateful, spiteful girl,
She turned my home to a charnel house
When she cauterised the cat,
Burning the fur of my Burmese with
A basin of scalding fat.
I asked if ever she'd sought the help
Of a child psychologist,
Giselle just sat and she simpered, ‘Oh,
She's never as bad as this!
You must have done something to worry her,
Keep calm, and try to be nice.'
But I was too busy to answer, while
Packing the cat in ice.
‘Children need to feel valued, ' said
Giselle, one day to me,
But I was stood by the window
Watching her kid ring-bark my tree,
She cut off the neighbour's pony-tail
As she lay asleep on the deck,
My hands were jerking in spasms as
I thought of them round her neck.
At Christmas-time out shopping she
Demanded the best of dolls,
Would scream, and fill up the shopping cart
With fairies, dwarfs and trolls,
But when it was too expensive and
Giselle said, ‘Put it back! '
She'd lie on the floor and hold her breath
‘Til her face was almost black.
On Christmas Eve, I trimmed the tree
At about the midnight hour,
As I wrapped the various packages, I
Could feel her in my power,
She wouldn't forget this Christmas was
The promise I made to me,
For two could play at the naughty game
She'd find out, Annabelle Leigh!
I took the fairy from the top
Of the tree that it had graced,
Unwrapped the special surprise I'd bought
And put it in her place,
A large black rubber devil with
Red eyes and a pair of horns,
And a tongue that sprung from its evil face
For a foot and a half or more.
I'd coated the tongue with Rapid-fix
That instant stick cement,
And added the smell of rotting flesh
And Burmese excrement,
At dawn, when Annabelle Leigh came down
She looked for the fluffy dog,
But when she opened the parcel it
Was just my exploding frog!
The frog was coated in treacle that
Was stuck to her hands and hair,
She got out a single scream before
Her mother came running there,
The spring released on the devil that
Came leaping out of the tree,
Its tongue flew out, and stuck to the lip
Of that darling, Annabelle Leigh.
She stared in the big black devil's eyes
As it hung, and bounced from her lip,
The eyes popped out and revolved as well,
Giselle came out, and flipped,
I doubt they'll ever dropp in on me
Again, they left in a whirl,
Annabelle sees a psychiatrist,
A well behaved little girl!

A Christmas Remembered
A Christmas Remembered
Day before Christmas it was cold and we walked down
to the harbour to buy a tree and I remember the sea
that slapped against the dock was apple green and foamy.
Mother bought a tree, for next to nothing, since its top
was broken and it looked like a rejected child that waited
for a car to come pick it up and bring it to the orphanage
By putting the tree on top of the dinner table and a star
and a bit of glitter it looked nice in a child’s eye.
Mother was angry we didn’t know way, and went to bed.
We children sat on the floor and ate lukewarm rice pudding
and there was nothing under the tree. Mother got up told
us to dress and we walked to my uncle’s house. At first he
didn’t want to let her in, but when he saw us children he
opened the door. We had plenty to eat although my aunt
had a sour mien. But happy we walked home and thought
we had had a splendid Christmas.

The Old General
Little Annabelle to please,
(Lacking grace, I grant),
Grandpa down on hands and knees
Plays the elephant.
Annabelle shrieks with delight,
Bouncing up and down,
On his back and holding tight
To his dressing gown.
As they roll and bowl along,
Round and round the room,
There is sunshine and a song
'Spite December gloom.
Yet we hear not Grandpa's groans,
Hushed his beard inside,
As his old rheumatic bones
Ache with every stride.
He has known his golden days,
Soldiered with the best;
And to prove the people's praise
Medals bright his breast.
Yet though his renown we chant,
How we love him well
When he plays the elephant
Just for Annabelle!

Most of the time it's the parents who recognise me. They try to tell their kids, 'Look, it's Giselle,' and I say, 'No, no, no, don't ruin this for them,' because I'm usually standing there with my hair sideways and no make-up on. And the kid is saying, 'That is not Giselle. No way. That is some worn-out girl who really needs a bath.'
No Christmas Tree Where It Should Be
A Christmas tree! A Christmas tree!
With dark green needled memories
Of childhood dreams and mysteries
Wrapped present-like in front of me.
A Christmas tree! A Christmas tree!
I glimpse a past wherein i see
The child that then grew into me
Not forward fast but haltingly.
A Christmas tree! A Christmas tree!
A time for being with family
A time that's gone so fleetingly
Yet lives for always deep in me.
A Christmas tree! A Christmas tree!
When twelfth night comes whole hauntingly
One lingered look and then i see
No Christmas tree where it would be.
A Christmas tree! A Christmas tree!
With feelings now felt tearfully
No home, no kids surrounding me
No corner in my house to see
The magic of that Christmas tree.

I Was Young Once Too
Written by richard leigh and robert byrne
He raced that engine down the track round the tree on christmas day
I was so amazed my dad would play with trains
I saw a sparkle in his eye, then I heard him say, come on son lets play, i
Was young once, too
He washed that buick faithfully, lord he kept her clean
I thought that machine meant more to him than me
On the day I turned sixteen he threw me the keys
Said I was young once, too, now she belongs to you
He was such a young man then, Im older than that now
I hope I measure up to him, when the circle comes around
I saw him in the attic sittin cross legged on the floor
With some old photographs, he point and laughed
He said, thats me in that picture, I said, no son, thats your dad
I was young once, too, and looked a lot like you
I was young once, too, I was young once, too
Merry christmas son, I wish your grandpa were here
He was young once, too, and looked like me and you

Home On Christmas Day
Sitting in some hotel room
Some place far away
Saw a shop light screaming Christmas
Bought your present there today
Pre-Chorus:
I'll be home on Christmas day
I am just a thought away
And every Christmas tree
Reminds me where I'd rather be
The drunken Santa on the corner
Looks a little blue
But the twinkle in his eye dear
Looks a little like you
Chorus:
I'll be home on Christmas day
I am just a thought away
And every Christmas tree
Reminds me where I'd rather be
Home on Christmas day
I am just a thought away
But anywhere I'll be
You will always be Christmas to me
Something about this season
Makes me feel a little queer
Everybody's so damn jolly
I wish you were here
Repeat Chorus

Good times, bad times & my cactus Christmas tree
My first Christmas tree, thirty years ago
Upon my arrival in Las Vegas
Shall always be remembered so,
As one of my greatest
My pickup truck was my home
My refuge and my castle
I was totally, absolutely alone…
But… it wasn’t such a hassle
I drove into the desert one day
To see what I could see
And lo and behold beside the road
Found my perfect Christmas tree
It was a three inch tall cactus
All attitude, prickly and brash
And I proudly installed it
Upon my ol’ trucks dash
I used cigarette cellophane
As tinsel you see
Stuck tight to the spines
Of my lil’ Christmas tree
Many times it fell off
My prickly lil’ friend
When I would start off too fast
Or career round a bend
Though small, and deceptive
It was easy to find you see
Usually stuck quite painfully
Upon my bony right knee
It was all I had that christmas
And I was lonely you see
Just me and my ol’ pickup truck
And my cactus Christmas tree
Childhood memories are nice…
But the one I’ll most remember will be
The one in which, all there was in my world
Was just me…my ol’ pickup
And my cactus Christmas tree

Christmas
- P. Spector - J. Barry - E. Greenwich -
(Christmas)
The snow's coming down
(Christmas)
I'm watching it fall
(Christmas)
Lots of people around
(Christmas)
Baby please come home
(Christmas)
The church bells in town
(Christmas)
All ringing in song
(Christmas)
Full of happy sounds
(Christmas)
Baby please come home
They're singing 'Deck The Halls'
But it's not like Christmas at all
Cuz I remember when you were here
And all the fun we had last year
(Christmas)
Pretty lights on the tree
(Christmas)
I'm watching them shine
(Christmas)
You should be here with me
(Christmas)
Baby please come home
They're singing 'Deck The Halls'
But it's not like Christmas at all
Cuz I remember when you were here
And all the fun we had last year
(Christmas)
If there was a way
(Christmas)
I'd hold back this tear
(Christmas)
But it's Christmas day
(Please)
Please
(Please)
Please
(Please)
Please
(Please)
Please
Baby please come home
(Christmas)
Baby please come home
(Christmas)
Baby please come home

The Reckoning
My mother was carried to heaven
On the day that I turned six,
She died of tuberculosis
Spitting blood in a coughing fit,
She'd been so ill for a long long time
That I couldn't recall her smile,
My father, he just grumbled, said:
'Your Ma will be gone for a while.'
'She's gone to sing in a choir up there,
Who knows how long she will be? '
But I saw the coffin that carried her out,
The hearse and the burial tree,
I watched as it sank down into the ground
And my father just left it there,
Went off to visit my 'aunt', he said,
A woman with long, blond hair.
I stayed at home, such a lonely child,
And went to a place in my head,
Where mother was fit and without a care
She laughed at the things I said,
My father left me alone a lot
So mother would tell me, 'Shush! '
We'd laugh and giggle when he went out
But talk in a sort of hush.
I played outside at other times
Where the grass grew long and wild,
I'd catch the skinks as they darted past,
I was always a curious child,
I'd bring the Sleepy Lizards home,
My father didn't mind,
He said I could keep the pets I caught,
I thought he was being kind.
But then one day he came on home
With this 'aunt', who moved right in,
He said they were married now, so I
Should call her 'Mum', not Jen.
I scowled, and went to my room to cry,
My mother was looking sad,
She said, 'just do what your father says,
I'm your Mother, but he's your Dad.'
This Jenny, she was all right at first
She tried to make me smile,
But I was feeling rebellious then,
And turned my back for a while,
I kept my rabbits and guinea pigs
And fed them out in their hutch,
But Jenny came out to look at them,
And she didn't like them much.
I knew, she wrinkled her powdered nose
And said, 'Oh pew! They stink!
We'll have to find you a hobby, one
That's pure and clean, I think.'
I heard her talking to father, say
That she thought I was rather slow,
She wanted the garden tidied up
So my animals had to go.
It was just about that time, I think
That my mother said goodbye,
She couldn't stay in that house, she said,
It was time for her to fly,
She left me alone in a great big world
So I brought a Lizard inside,
And put it under my bedclothes
Thought it a perfect place to hide.
When Jenny made the bed, she screamed
And shook me like a rag,
She went and got a kitchen knife
And a plastic shopping bag,
She made me put the Lizard in
Then she took the bag outside,
And stabbed and stabbed 'til the Lizard bled,
'Til my Lizard friend had died.
'Now bury it! ' she said to me,
'And don't you ever dare
Bring filthy animals into this house,
For if you do, I swear...'
At this she put the knife to my throat
And stood and watched me scream,
I saw the hate in her powdered face
It was like an awful dream!
Whenever my father left the house
She'd always scream and shout,
Knock me around for the slightest thing
Then drag me, throw me out,
Lock the door so I couldn't get in
And give me nothing to eat,
She said if I told my Dad on her
It would only get me beat.
She killed my rabbits, cooked them up
And served them from a pot,
She gave me a crooked, evil grin:
'You'd better eat the lot! '
I found myself in a black, black rage
Inside, at the things she'd done,
And hoped that my father would go on out
And buy himself a gun.
He never knew what she did to me,
I never would dare to say,
I knew that she'd get me on my own
And then there'd be hell to pay,
So I stayed outside in the barren fields
And found me a hessian sack,
Then went for a hunt with a long, forked stick,
It was time to get her back!
I waited until he'd gone away,
Was gone two days or more,
Then bit my tongue as she raved at me,
Spat hate from the kitchen door,
The morning came, and there wasn't a sound
To come from that angry head,
And I will never regret the day
I put a snake in her bed.

Rockin' Around The Christmas Tree
Rockin' Around the Christmas Tree
At the Christmas party hop
Mistletoe hung where you can see
Every couple tries to stop
Rockin' Around the Christmas Tree
Let the Christmas spirit ring
Later we'll have some pumpkin pie
And we'll do some caroling
You will get a sentimental feeling
When you hear
Voices singing "Let's be jolly
Deck the halls with boughs of holly"
Rockin' Around the Christmas Tree
Have a happy holiday
Everyone dancing merrily
In the new old-fashioned way

The soft glow from a Christmas tree
The one time of year you go on a shopping spree
Large snowflakes fall, like feathers from the sky
Caroler’s singing songs from days gone by
Presents wrapped under the tree
Some for you and some for me
Old Christmas movies from our childhood
Help us reminisce and makes us feel good

Our Little Christmas Tree
Standing beside me
Our little christmas tree
Underneath are little presents for my family
Full of colored lights shining prettily
I made it as perfect as can be,
Our little christmas tree
Same - as old as me
My mother bought it when i was still a baby
I cared for this thoroughly
Because it has been part of the family
Our little christmas tree
It reminds me -
Christmas is coming all over the world
And our Saviour was born
It's time to be thankful
It's time to be blissful
It's time to give our hearts to all.

A Family Christmas Tree
At Christmas families,
gather around a family Christmas tree
to open gifts of love
each has left there for one another.
The tree sparkles
with lights and coloured tinsel,
while on top there sits an angel
to watch over everyone.
Carefully wrapped presents adorn the floor
around the bottom of the tree.
Each has been wrapped
and sealed with a loving kiss,
one for you and one for me.
Then on Christmas morn
as the dawn breaks the sky
the children climb out of their bed
and tiptoe downstairs to the presents,
getting ready to explore.
Before the day is over
there will be shrills of laughter
and joy ringing out
at all they have received
from beneath a family Christmas tree.

Who Would Have Thought
I fell in love
On a very special day
This feeling will never go away
Now I can say
That with your love, Ill always stay
Look at me and tell me if Im being deceived
Cause right now this feelin is hard to believe
Chorus:
Who would have thought itd be this way?
Oh, no
I never thought Id fall in love on christmas day
Who would have thought Id fall in love on christmas day?
I cant believe
That you are right here with me
The star on my christmas tree
I wanna love you endlessly
And thats the way I always want it to be (want it to be)
Standing there when the lights from the tree
Meets your eyes
I can see
That I only want you
cuz youre all that I need
Chorus
Id never fall in love on christmas day
I never thought Id fall in love
On christmas, christmas day Id fall in love

To endure my sins and shame
But now my dear we fall in love
On this very special day
This day
Do do do do do do do do do do do hey

The Bells Of Christmas
Imagine a boy
Kneeling by the window
Lookin out across the driveway at the rain
Will it always rain
I remember the bells
Comin from the churchyard
And I thought they played their music just for me
And day by day
The rain turned to snow
I dont hear them anymore
The bells of christmas
Will ring for us again
When we truly do believe
What christmas really means
So light a candle
That every man may see
The world of hope and promise
Like the one we knew back when and
Well ring the bells of christmas
Once again
There was a girl
Lived around the corner
With eyes as black as marys must have been
I wonder
Does she miss her friend
I remember the day
All the bells were ringing
As I watched her cross the churchyard in the snow
And all my searching
For all I lack
Is just trying to get that feeling back
The bells of christmas
Will ring for us again
When we truly do believe
What christmas really means
So light a candle
That every man may see
A world of hope and promise
Like the one we knew back when and
Well ring the bells of christmas once again
The future of the world, they say
Is in the childrens hands
Perhaps if we could let them lead
Wed come to understand
The bells of christmas
Will ring for us again
When we truly do believe
What christmas really means
So light a candle that every man may see
Like the one we knew back when and
Well ring the bells of christmas once again
Well ring the bells of christmas once again

Christmas Time Again
While driving to get our Christmas tree
We sang some Christmas carols
Like Jingle Bells and Frosty
And some other sweet noels.
We picked our favorite Christmas tree
And tied it to the roof
Then drove home very slowly
As we played more Christmas music.
When putting up the Christmas tree
It starts to smell like pine
It finally feels like Christmas
Now it's decoration time.
We draped the tree with colored lights
And multi-colored balls
Then put an Angel here and there
And let the tinsel fall.
Dad placed the star atop the tree
And then he plugged it in,
Then the colored lights began to dance
It's Christmas time again.
