The Cavalier
He'd wandered into the party through
The French Doors, facing the lake,
Was vague, and missing a bob or two,
Perhaps he'd made a mistake?
Taken a left at the crossroads where
The kids had hidden the sign,
Instead of a right to the Graham's house,
I'd ask him, given the time.
The party was getting out of hand
The punch was spiked with gin,
And vodka and tequila and…
God knows what else was in!
For Jane was down to her underwear
While Pat fell down in a heap,
And Margaret danced on the table while
Her kids were sound asleep.
The clock in the hall struck midnight then
And I was getting tired,
I went on the hunt for Carolyn,
I thought that she'd expired,
But there she was, in the corner with
The stranger in the hat,
A funny thing with a feather in
And fancy dress, at that.
I thought that I'd introduce myself,
I'd not seen him before,
Perhaps he worked at the agency,
I'd ask, she'd know the score,
But Carolyn acted nervous when
I tried to hold her hand,
‘What gentleman is this, I pray? '
He asked of Carolyn.
‘Oh Phil, he's simply a husband, '
She replied, she was sublime,
I note she mentioned ‘a husband' but
No mention that ‘He's mine! '
‘And what are these folk that prate, disport
And act themselves remiss,
Is he from the Long Parliament?
God help him, if he is! '
I knew the punch had been tampered with
But he hadn't been there long,
Maybe he'd savoured something else,
Who knew what he was on!
But Carolyn gave me that funny look
And I edged back into the room,
Leaving the two of them talking there
In the corner, in the gloom.
We'd always had an arrangement, she
Had friends, and I had mine,
We never questioned each other, and
We found that it worked out fine,
She'd spend a night on the town or so
And fix me up a tray,
While I'd go visiting Annabel
For a tumble in the hay.
We'd purchased the house at Kineton,
When she'd said: ‘It has such charm! '
And I was content to be out there
In the country, near a farm,
They said the place was historic
Dating back to the civil war,
But not ‘til the night of the party
Did I give it a second thought.
By one, the following morning, when
The party was winding down,
I found that Carolyn disappeared
With the stranger to the town,
She sent me a mobile message, ‘Will
You come and get me, Phil?
I'm right in the heart of a skirmish
Down the slope, just by Edgehill! '
I drove to the ancient battlefield
In the dark, on a Moonless night,
But nothing stirred in the field out there
In the beam of the car's headlight,
My phone lit up with another call
And her voice came drifting through,
‘My God, I'm stuck in a battle, Phil,
In 1642! '
She'd taken off with the Cavalier,
I knew what he was by now,
A straggler caught in the folds of time
That had fetched up here, somehow,
And Carolyn faded into the past
As she'd made it more than clear,
I'm the only man with a wife that ran
Away with a Cavalier!

Party Of Two
I am learning to live
With another voice
Chattering through my
Creative thoughts;
Other sounds in the house.
Busy shoes that clickety click
Up and down the hallways;
Go in and out of doors.
I am learning to live
With a snacker;
A retired fast tracker while he
Learns how to play golf and the guitar;
How to paint.
My heart’s singular complaint...
It yearns to drink heartily again
Of the solitude it once knew.
But all things come to pass;
This too shall fade into my past
And I will learn
All over again
How to be a party of two.

American Beauty’- 2000 Oscar.
Laster Bumhone, at forty two,
Provoked by forbidden passion
For his daughter’s friend, Angela,
Grow strong with lustful attention.
Mid life crises set on.
Adolescence love is reborn.
From his dear wife Carolyn,
He distances himself.
Day and night, he builds his body
With vigorous exercises
And finds ways to woo her madly.
He gets her and by guilt he dies.
Carolyn responds to advances
Made by her handsome colleague.
When is detected their romance
By her husband, she commits suicide.
A newly arrived neighbour lad
Takes fancy to her daughter Jane.
The disciplined father of the lad
Thrashes the budded love to naught.
Love is blind to hit anywhere.
The family is split somehow.
Unless given allowances,
Souls of family get no solace.

The Gravedigger
I was leaning on my shovel, in a hole
As black as pitch,
With a plug of fine tobacco in my pipe
To scratch my itch,
But I hadn't even lit it when
I heard the voices clear,
'You'll be married on the morrow,
We'll be rich within the year! '
I sat down and there I rested at the
Bottom of the grave
I'd been digging for a friend of mine,
Whose life I'd tried to save,
I could see the figures dimly, talking,
Plotting in the dark,
Then they kissed, and he went one way
While she tripped across the park.
It was not that they were strangers;
Her I knew as Anne Morrell,
And she cut a pretty figure with
Her bustle and her veil,
While the man was Terence Morgan,
He was just a local lout,
But he had a way with women, 'til
They found the beggar out!
So I clambered out the hole, and made
My way into the church,
And I looked for where the banns were posted,
There, inside the porch,
I saw that Ann Morrell was set
To marry Graham Pugh...
The local Ironmonger who
Was known as 'well-to-do.'
He was more than well-to-do, I thought,
He owned a string of shops,
And he sent goods to the colonies,
In fair exchange for crops,
His house was like a mansion in
Our tiny little town,
Where it sat up on the hill, where he
Could stand, and look on down.
So his bride-to-be was plotting, she was
Marrying for greed,
She had worked on Graham Pugh,
Worked on his loneliness and need,
He was in his middle forties,
Hadn't strayed across the line,
In amassing all his wealth, he said,
He'd never had the time.
So I thought I'd better warn him that
They'd sworn to take his life,
That they'd sealed it with a kiss, the
Local blackguard, and his wife,
That I'd heard them both conspire about
The wealth they thought he had,
If he married her tomorrow, knowing this,
He must be mad!
So I walked on up the hill, and strode
Right through his fancy gates,
Up the drive that went forever,
Past the poplars in my haste,
And I beat upon the knocker, thinking
He'd invite me in,
But he kept me standing on the step;
'Your story's rather thin! '
I'm quite ashamed of what I did, but this
Was life or death,
I stayed awake all night that night,
Could scarcely catch my breath,
So many things to do and plan,
The morning came at last,
The wedding party turned up late,
They all wore party masks.
I'll have to dig that grave again, I
Somehow filled it in,
And Terence Morgan quit the town,
He's not been seen since then,
While Graham Pugh woke up, I think
En route to Aberdeen,
Quite safe from plotting women, and
Unmarried, it would seem.
While down the aisle the bride had swept
In ribbons, veil and lace,
The veil so thick, she couldn't see
Her hand before her face,
I wore my collar high that day,
Top hat and tails, you see,
And when I turned to kiss the bride...
She found she'd married me!

Party All Night
Hang loose
Party
Got my head to the grindstone
I'm trying to act like a fool
My head is a lampshade
They can't find me at school
Well I'm an animal
Yes I'm a cannonball
They say I'm out for blood
One thing I wanna do is
Party all night (Oh-oh!)
Party all night (Oh-oh-oh!)
Party all night (Yeah!)
All night long
Driving right way on the wrong side
A bit too much to drink
Women in the backseat
And they don't know what to think
They say I've lost my head
You'll probably end up dead
But they're too blind to see
What's a party to me, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah
Is to party all night (Oh-oh!)
Let's party all night (Oh-oh-oh!)
Party all night (Yeah!)
All night long
Uh!
Let's have a good time, good time
C'mon
Everybody's parties
I'm on a one way cruise
Lookin' for trouble
We got nothing to lose
They're on the telephone
They're trying to send me home
We're gonna pull the plug
We've got a new kind of school
Let's party all night
Let's party all night
Party all night
Let's party all night
(Yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah)
Let's party all night (Oh!)
(We're party animals, baby)
Let's party all night (Oh-oh-oh!)
(We've got nothing to lose)
Let's party all night
All night long, yeah!
Let's party all night
Let's party boys

Byblos
I saw her once before; she didnt turn me on.
One night she stopped to talk to pass the time.
And then I saw her eyes; her softly smiling glow,
We sat and talked all night at byblos.
She talked of feelings that I knew were true.
She painted me a picture using every shade of blue
It was light with laughter, at times it made me cry,
And now Ill never know just why I didnt ever try to hold her;
To squeeze her; to kiss her all night long, I never tried to please her.
Then, soon she had to go;
I sat there all alone
And thought of things she said
The whole day through.
And then I realized,
I never took the time
To find out where she lived
Or where to call.
I thought that I would see her
The next night,
Anticipating how Id set myself right.
Then, I went back to byblos;
I sat there and waited,
Feeling just a little nervous
And a little frustrated.
Then, soon, in she came, looking just the same
Oo, I could hardly wait to take her far from the game.
Then a person came in to the club
That I had to speak to
I explained the situation to her
And I thought she understood
But I guess she thought I was jiving her around
Cause when I looked for her, this is what I found
She was rapping with a real good friend of mine,
He was happening, I guess it was his time.
I really couldnt blame him, cause he was sad and lonely too.
But just talking to her did me so much good, I knew shed do him good too.
Then I went home and I got it on,
Sat down to write these words when I was finally alone.
And then, about halfway through I wondered if someone knew
Where she was, so I could give her a call,
And I found out that she was right down the hall,
Not too far away,
But thats ok, Ill just wait for the day when I can see her again
And spend some time.

Party
Dont delay
Today
Youve got to join the party
Theres no choice
Your voice
Will join the sound sound sound sound
Light the flame
Our aim
Lets get the whole thing started
Tell your friends
Attend
Look what weve found
And if youre scared
Or unaware
Theres no-one here
Wholl put you down
Dont be afraid
You make the grade
Dont hesitate
Come into town
Come on
Everyone is going to
Party, party
Everyone is going to
Party - yeah
Thats the place
Our base
Will make the whole world welcome
No-one cares
What you wear
Just come on down
Youll be there
And you will share
With people
All around
And youll be strong
cause you belong
To everyone
Youve found
I said come on
I said
Everyone is going to
Party, party
Everyone is going to
Party - yeah
Everyone is going to
Party, party
Everyone is going to
Party - yeah
And I say yeah
Come on
Everyone is going to

Where's The Party
Where's the party (party, party)
Where's the party (party, party)
Show me the way, show me the way
It's like a holiday
That happens everyday
I get to celebrate
No matter what you say
When I get real bored
I want something more
I never lose my head
Cause I know the score
Show me the way
Show me the way
C'mon, show me the way
Where's the party?
All I Wanna do is have some fun
Where's the party?
Party all night 'til I can't go on
Where's the party?
All I Wanna do is have some fun
Where's the party?
Show me the way, show me the way
One thing I know
Is when I feel low
I never have to worry
Got a place to party
no one's getting mean
It's so obscene
No matter what goes down
I just get what I need
Show me the way
Show me the way
C'mon, show me the way
Where's the party?
All I Wanna do is have some fun
Where's the party?
Party all night 'til I can't go on
Where's the party?
All I Wanna do is have some fun
Where's the party?
Show me the way, show me the way
Where's the party, where's the party
party, party, party, party, party, party, party, party
p-p-p-party
Show me the way
Show me the way
C'mon, show me the way
Where's the party?
All I Wanna do is have some fun
Where's the party?
Party all night 'til I can't go on
Where's the party?
All I Wanna do is have some fun
Where's the party?
Show me the way, show me the way
Show me the way, if you show me the way
C'mon show me the way
Where's the party?
All I Wanna do is have some fun
Where's the party?
Party all night 'til I can't go on
Where's the party?
All I Wanna do is have some fun
Where's the party?
Show me the way, show me the way

The Visitor
In Spanish he whispers there is no time left.
It is the sound of scythes arcing in wheat,
the ache of some field song in Salvador.
The wind along the prison, cautious
as Francisco's hands on the inside, touching
the walls as he walks, it is his wife's breath
slipping into his cell each night while he
imagines his hand to be hers. It is a small country.
There is nothing one man will not do to another.

The Fortune Teller
He entered the Fortune Teller's tent
When nobody was around,
He didn't want to be seen in there
By the friends that would put him down,
The woman that sat there, heavily veiled
With her hands on a crystal ball,
Said: ‘Cross my palm with silver, sir,
The crystal reveals it all! '
He sat, but nervously sitting there
His mind had become a blank,
All of the questions he'd thought before
Had gone, and his spirits sank.
‘I see a lot of confusion here
The crystal echoes your mind,
What was the thing that you wanted most
Of the things that you sought to find? '
He dredged in the recess of his soul,
Just what did he really lack?
His life had been more than successful
There was nothing that he'd take back,
But he felt an awful ache just then
From the pit of his lonely heart,
‘I still haven't found a woman to love,
So that will do, for a start! '
She waved her hands on the crystal ball
And he noticed the twisting shapes,
Shadows of past liaisons that
Had passed through his garden gates.
‘Perhaps you treat them unfairly
I see tears here by the score,
The women that you rejected, what
On earth were you looking for? '
‘I was looking for love, ' he stammered out,
He could see she wasn't convinced,
‘Love is the one thing left behind
That you haven't revisited since.'
And he thought of June, of Carolyn
And the love that shone from their eyes,
But he'd been so very much younger then
He confessed, and not very wise!
‘They were only poor young village girls,
I'd set my heart on a dream,
I wanted a lady of fashion then
A Duchess, even a Queen! '
‘Do you think that pearls and coronets
Are the signs of a loving heart?
You'd find the cost of upkeeping them
Are the things that set you apart.'
‘There was a girl, ' he began again
That I could have loved with my life, '
He stopped and thought about Carolyn,
‘I should have made her my wife! '
‘I see her, here in the crystal ball
Surrounded by all of your lies,
She loved you once in the wherewithal
But you turned, and cast her aside.'
‘Do you think she'd give me a second chance
If I knocked at the girl's front door,
Would she put out the welcome mat for me,
Or wish that I'd never been born?
I must admit I deserve it, I
Have lived my life like a fool,
The dreams I had were beyond me, I
Regret I was ever so cruel! '
‘The crystal sees you approach her door,
You're getting down on your knees,
It shows you grovelling on the floor
In a vain attempt to please.'
‘I'll do it! She may forgive me then…'
And he left the tent in a spin,
While the Fortune Teller took off her veil
And smiled, did Carolyn!

depression
-DEPRESSION-
I Am, crawling in the basement
Of a house so-called depression,
Cannot lift myself from under
This Rock of non-expression.
Just lingering in the darkness,
Not a candle in the way
And now I lie here motionless
Into another day.
No feelings in my body,
No thoughts to fill my mind;
For if I cannot awake from this
My fate is now resigned.
There lurking in the darkness
Is one who summons me.
The man who holds the sickle
Does now call out in glee.

My Unborn First Sister
The anticipation grows each day
To see my little sister appear and say
Carolyn I love you so
Thankyou for being the sister I know
I talk some days to my mums tiny bump
And see this huge explosive thump
Is this my sister already talking to me?
i really hope so I guess ill soon see
all the love and care inside
builds each day it can not hide
it is all made for this one little girl
my first sister to be my mums little pearl
in a few weeks ill no longer be
this “only child”, its no longer just me
this is definitely not a bad thing
I already love my unborn sibling
When she appears we will all celebrate
Me, mum and Jase we really cant wait
To see her little face awaken and shine
This really will be a happy time
So to you my little unborn sibling
After 17 years I now know what I have been missing
A little sister to love and hold near
And that baby girl is you my dear

The Party
As we were dressing to go out our little girl and boy
Came in and asked if they could go this time
We told them little girls and boys don't belong at parties
And that they should be in bed asleep by nine
The babysitter came in then and we kissed the kids goodbye
And told them that we'd be home soon and told them not to cry
Then we left for the party like we'd so often done
Thinkin' only of ourselves and not our little ones
The party started out wild and it grew wilder as the night wore on
With drinking laughing teling dirty jokes nobody thinkin' of home
Then the stranger feeling came over me and it chilled me to the bones
And I told my wife that we'd better leave the party
Cause I felt that we were needed at home
As we rode along I got to thinking of how the kids that mornin'
Had asked if we would take them to church the next day
And how I'd put 'em off like I'd so often done
By sayin' we'd probably get home too late
Then my thoughts were interrupted by the sound of sirens
As they cut through the still night air
Then we turned down our street that's when we saw the fire
The rest was like a nightmare
We took their little bodies to church the next day
Though we'd left the party early we still got home too late

Mama's Legacy
MAMA'S LEGACY
When I was just a little girl
I lay in Mama's bed
To listen to the fairy tales
From the little books she read.
Of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs
Cinderella and her Prince
Of Rumplestiltskin-Puss 'N Boots
And Aladdin and his tents.
I couldn't get enough of them
I'd ask her every night
But sleep would always conquer me
No matter how I'd fight.
I'd recite the words along with her
I knew them all by heart
She'd read to me from anything
Some knowledge to impart.
She taught me about the world around
From books she read aloud
She made my life worth living
And made me live it proud.
When I had children of my own
I read from those same books
To teach my children that in this life
You need brains, not just good looks.

PARTY AT THE LEPER COLONY
Finger food and an ice cold keg
It won't cost you an arm and a leg
Dance all night to a rotten band
Come on, people, let's give 'em a hand
Saturday night it's the place to be
Everybody cut footloose with me
At the party at the leper colony
Oh, there's a party at the leper colony
Met a little lady so pretty and young
She was quite a talker till the cat got her tongue
She oozed up beside me, I turned on my charm
Well, pretty soon she was completely disarmed
I said, "Girl, now don't fall to pieces on me"
But she cried her eyes out . literally
At the party at the leper colony
Oh, there's a party at the leper colony
Hey! Hey!
Hey now, buddy, don't you give me no lip
Sorry I was using your head for a dip
There's a guy in the hot tub, I don't know who
Wait a minute, it looks like Stu
Well, hold the phone now, what do I see?
Another pretty mama got her eye on me
At the party at the leper colony
Oh, there's a party at the leper colony
There's a party at the leper colony
(Party at the leper colony)
There's a party at the leper colony
(Party at the leper colony)
Oh, there's a party at the leper colony, yeah, party at the leper colony
Well, there's a party at the lepr colony
(Party at the leper colony)

The Lonely Willow Tree
THAT LONELY WILLOW TREE
God made this Earth,
The Sun... The Air.
He placed it all
Into Man's care.
On it He placed
Flowers and trees
In beautiful colors,
Man's eyes to please.
But when He thought
His work was done,
He added this....
A tree.....Just one.
He planted here
A Willow Tree,
Where Man could pray
On bended knee.
But now when Man
Neglects to come,
He named this tree
The weeping one.
Near a stream
Where no one will be
There stands a lonely
Weeping Willow Tree.
And when you see
It's branches weep,
You know that from
God's eyes....
....................Tears do Seep.

-GRADUATION DAY--
The mist hung slight
Above the ground.
Students all were
Scurrying 'round.
With testing done
The college plight,
Such merriment
It t'was a sight.
As mortar boards
Flung into the air
Their joy and sadness
Each to share.
Forward as their
Lives would go,
And where they lead
No one does know.

eight Sisters
--EIGHT SISTERS--
When I was very little
And Mama's sisters gathered round
All the serious talk would go
As joyous laughter would resound.
With every woman talking
Loud laughter would erupt....
All the men would run for quiet
When their ears had had enough.
I'm not sure where it came from
For their parents, I didn't know,
But I was very happy
With their joyous laughter show.
And now those laughs are quiet
As all eight sisters now have passed,
But I bet God was really smiling
As He waited upon the last.
Because their joyous laughter
Brings smiles to all who hear,
And I know, up there in Heaven....
They are thought of very dear.......
