Early Works - The Spirit Of Christmas
The December wind howled outside
rattling the windows,
the children played on the floor
as the crimson glow of the fire
warmed the heart of the room.
In the corner stood a Christmas tree
sparingly decorated with tinsel and lights
but beneath were no presents in sight.
Jason watched his children
with sadness tinting his eyes
he knew how important
Christmas was to young lives.
He had tried to save through the year,
but there was always something needed
from the money he tried to save
clothes, food and shoes to wear.
Oh how he would have loved to see
them smile from ear to ear
instead of sadness in their eyes
for toys that wouldn’t be there.
He wished he hadn’t spent so much on petrol
when he was looking for a job
that he had walked the lonely miles
from refusal to rejection
and used the money to buy
his children a Christmas present collection.
The smiling face of his wife
cheered him little from his frown.
His thoughts were of his childhood
and the presents crowded around
the bottom of the tree,
of stockings filled with sweets, toys and fruit,
and creeping down the stairs at the first light of dawn
to see what Santa Claus had left.
Those were happy Christmases
not like this one so bare.
The children went to bed early
excitement filled the air
with the expectancy of presents under the tree,
which sadly would not be there.
Jason and his wife waited
until they were asleep
and then filled each stocking
with all that they could afford.
Then set about arranging
the few presents that they had
before they themselves retired to their bed.
The silence of the night
was disturbed by a rustling sound
of old iron chains
being dragged across the ground.
No one in the house heard it
as in sleep they lie
as in crept the spirit of a slave
from centuries gone by.
The ghost climbed the stairs
dragging his chains behind,
flitted from room to room
as if by some design.
Downstairs he hurled himself
in a sliding fashion
his moans were but a whisper
that could be mistaken as the wind.
He then flew around again
over everywhere he’d been.
He flew around the Christmas tree
causing a few pine needles to fall
and as each needle hit the floor
a present appeared
until beneath the tree was no longer bare.
He rattled his chains again
this time they sounded like bells,
and then flew up the chimney
with muffled sooty yells.
The streaks of dawn broke the sky
the children woke with wonder
at the stocking on the end of the bed.
Stealing through the shadows
from the break of day,
they moved silently down the stairs
to the living room and the tree.
Unlike the night before
beneath the tree, you couldn’t see the floor
presents covered in multi-coloured paper
decorated the bottom of the tree.
Their faces lit up and they said
a lot of oohs and mees.
Jason woke to their joyful tones;
he looked at his wife in question
just as there came a sound
of laughter and running feet.
“Oh Mummy, Daddy
come see what Santa has brought.”
Said the little girl with golden curls
as she jumped up on their bed.
“Come and see, come and see.”
two other voices yelled.
Jason smiled and nodded
as the children returned downstairs.
With sighs, they threw back the covers
and followed the children down.
They stood in the living room doorway
with faces masked in question.
They looked at each other for answers,
neither had any to give,
just that their prayer had been heard
and that the spirit of Christmas
they now understood.

A Family Christmas Tree
At Christmas families,
gather around a family Christmas tree
to open gifts of love
each has left there for one another.
The tree sparkles
with lights and coloured tinsel,
while on top there sits an angel
to watch over everyone.
Carefully wrapped presents adorn the floor
around the bottom of the tree.
Each has been wrapped
and sealed with a loving kiss,
one for you and one for me.
Then on Christmas morn
as the dawn breaks the sky
the children climb out of their bed
and tiptoe downstairs to the presents,
getting ready to explore.
Before the day is over
there will be shrills of laughter
and joy ringing out
at all they have received
from beneath a family Christmas tree.

A Christmas Miracle
A long time ago
in a land far away,
snowflakes fluttered down from the sky
like falling stars
on houses and garden walls.
A young boy was dreaming
of a wonderful Christmas day.
He dreamed of things
that he would like to happen.
The gifts around the Christmas tree.
Gifts for his parents,
his brother and his sisters.
It was just a dream though,
a dream on Christmas Eve.
His family were poor,
barely had enough money
to keep them all fed.
As Christmas loomed
there was no money
for any special treats.
Just enough to be thankful
they all had something to eat.
The snowflakes kept falling
laying its white blanket
on the ground.
The north wind bit everything
as it yelled its mournful sound.
The cold ate into everyone,
as the family fire grew dim.
Soon everyone retired
to their beds for the night.
The little boy dreamed
what his wonderful
Christmas would be;
knowing all the while,
it was just futility.
The wind rattled
the windows and the doors
as in theirs beds they slept.
Nothing stirred within the house;
every one had gone to sleep.
In the morning, the wind had passed,
but the cold still held its chill
over every living thing.
Slowly sleepy heads awoke
as if it was a normal day.
They crept slowly from their beds
for their breakfast.
They entered the living room
they stopped in the doorway,
their mouths open in shock.
The bare room when they went to bed
was now decorated with a tree.
Beneath it were presents for everyone.
Their names were on the tags,
but from whom was blank.
Who had done this in the night,
had entered and left
without making a sound?
The children on seeing everything,
their faces beamed
from ear to ear at the sight they saw.
The little boy rubbed his sleepy eyes,
looked and looked again.
His dream had come true.
This Christmas was going to be
the best year in their lives.
The children opened their presents.
Everything they had wished for
was there except for one,
and it was for their father.
For so long he had been without a job.
The one thing they wanted for him
was to be able to work again,
but there was no job
underneath the tree.
They hadn’t noticed a letter
standing on the fireplace.
It was after all the excitement
had to begun to die down
and the fire was about to be lit
that someone noticed it.
As the letter was opened,
the Christmas miracle
began to fall into place.
The letter was an offer of a job.
The smiles on everyone’s faces
told the whole story now
and the Christmas miracle
was now complete.
No one ever discovered
what happened that day
or who it was
who performed the Christmas Miracle.

Father Xmas
Father xmas
Will be working all night today
So that he can deliver all the christmas presents on time
To the children and their families
Father xmas
Is living his workshop now
In his reinder to deliver the Christmas presents
To all the houses here at home
Father christmas
Won't have any time to sleep at all
Because all the christmas gifts have to be delivered by christmas
And he has to follow the clause in his contract or otherwise he will get fired
And he could even make the children upset
Because there will be no presents to open at christmas
Father xmas
Goes down through the chimney
And then he comes out in the living room of the houses
Inside of the living room of the houses at christmas time
Father xmas will find the christmas tree decorated and lighted up

Christmas Wish List
parents running around frantic for a tree
waiting for the last moment so that their children do not see
decorating the tree when their children have been put to sleep
putting the lights, garland and icicles upon the tree.
and hoping that the children will not sneak down to see.
wrapping the presents and toasting a glass of wine
and thanking god for this quiet time.
hoping that the children are having pleasant dreams
of things seen and unseen.
and in their dreams they thank the lord up above
for their family and their love.
and when they open up their eyes on christmas day
and rush to see the tree decorated from bottom to the top
for a split second their hearts will stop.
the presents wrapped in ribbons and bows
to be torn apart by little fingers anxious to see.
what was left under the tree.
the hearts beating in a rapid pace
and big smiles upon their face.
asking each other 'what did you get'.
and in their faces there are no regrets.
they stop and gather around, and thank god for all they found.
for so many children are without
but they thank god for another day and in their hearts the lord will stay.
christmas is not just for gift giving but for living.
and feeling the joy of christ.
and if you have an extra gift, put it on a poor persons list.
for what you do today- will come back to you in another way.
show your children all you can
teach them to give a helping hand.
this is my christmas wish, which i put on my list.

The Best Gift Ever
Christmas trees and Christmas bells
Christmas lights and all the frills.
Smiles on all the children’s faces
Special foods and yuletide graces.
Eyes aglow with anxious wonder
Of what precious presents are waiting under
The Christmas tree that smells so spicy
Where popcorn and taffy are hung so nicely.
An angel shines above the tree
To light the way for all to see
That now God’s promise is fulfilled
And in a manger lies on a Bethlehem hill.
A newborn babe on a bed of hay
Will soon take all our sins away.
What greater gift could ever there be
For us, under God’s own Christmas tree?
Moms and Dads from all around
Awaken to that gleeful sound
Of children rushing in to see
What Santa has left there for me
And there they find the very best,
By our sacrifice our children are blessed
As God sacrificed His best for us,
His Son, our Savior, His name, Jesus!

Alll I Want For Christmas Is You
I don't want a lot for Christmas
There's just one thing I need
I don't care about presents
Underneath the Christmas tree
I just want you for my own
More than you could ever know
Make my wish come true...
All I want for Christmas
Is you...
I don't want a lot for Christmas
There is just one thing I need
I don't care about presents
Underneath the Christmas tree
I don't need to hang my stocking
There upon the fireplace
Santa Claus won't make me happy
With a toy on Christmas day
I just want you for my own
More than you could ever know
Make my wish come true
All I want for Christmas is you...
You baby
I won't ask for much this Christmas
I won't even wish for snow
I'm just gonna keep on waiting
Underneath the mistletoe
I won't make a list and send it
To the North Pole for Saint Nick
I won't even stay awake to
Hear those magic reindeer click
'Cause I just want you here tonight
Holding on to me so tight
What more can I do
Baby all I want for Christmas is you
You...
All the lights are shining
So brightly everywhere
And the sound of children's
Laughter fills the air
And everyone is singing
I hear those sleigh bells ringing
Santa won't you bring me the one I really need
Won't you please bring my baby to me
Oh I don't want a lot for Christmas
This is all I'm asking for
I just want to see baby
Standing right outside my door
Oh I just want him for my own
More than you could ever know
Make my wish come true
Baby all I want for Christmas is
You
All I want for Christmas is you baby

Christmas Gifts
Ten Christmas presents standing in a line;
Robert took the bicycle, then there were nine.
Nine Christmas presents ranged in order straight;
Bob took the steam engine, then there were eight.
Eight Christmas presents--and one came from Devon;
Robbie took the jackknife, then there were seven.
Seven Christmas presents direct from St. Nick's;
Bobby took the candy box, then there were six.
Six Christmas presents, one of them alive;
Rob took the puppy dog, then there were five.
Five Christmas presents yet on the floor;
Bobbin took the soldier cap, then there were four.
Four Christmas presents underneath the tree;
Bobbet took the writing desk, then there were three.
Three Christmas presents still in full view;
Robin took the checker board, then there were two.
Two Christmas presents, promising fun,
Bobbles took the picture book, then there was one.
One Christmas present--and now the list is done;
Bobbinet took the sled, and then there were none.
And the same happy child received every toy,
So many nicknames had one little boy.

Hey Santa
If everyday was christmas
If we could make believe
If everyone would care a little more
Thered be harmoney
The city is covered in snow tonight
The children fast asleep
Im waiting for him, but hes nowhere in sight
And I wonder if he can hear me
Hey santa
Hey santa...santa
I wish with all my might
Hey santa
Hey santa...santa
Bring my baby home tonight
Why does it feel like its colder than winter
Even by the fireside
My baby said hed be home for christmas
And now its almost midnight
The christmas lights up and down the street
Are such a sight to see
But all the presents by the tree
They dont mean a thing till hes with me
Hey santa
Hey santa...santa
I wish with all my might
Hey santa
Hey santa...santa
If you hear me wont you hurry
Bring my baby tonight
I know your sleigh is full inside
But wont you stop and give my baby a ride
Ill be waiting by candle light this christmas
The christmas lights up and down the street
Are such a sight to see
But all the presents by the tree
They dont mean a thing
Santa please hear me
Hey santa
Hey santa...santa
I wish with all my might
Hey santa
Hey santa...santa
If you hear me wont you hurry
Bring my baby tonight
The christmas lights up and down the street
The presents by the tree
I hear a knock, oh can it be?
My wish is staring back at me
Hey santa
Hey santa...santa
I guess you heard me tonight
Hey santa
Hey santa...santa
Im underneath the mistletoe
With my baby tonight
Sleigh ride...
Its christmas time...

Christmas Story 'believe
she was awoken with a loud thunderous sound
she jumped up and looked around.
it can't be santa claus? it just can't be.
mommy did'nt even have money to buy a tree.
she heard the sound one more time
and upon her roof they did climb.
the little pitter patter of hooves
above her head
made her turn and jump out of bed.
she ran to the window and
looked to the roof
she wanted to tell her mother
she did have the proof.
she saw something red
moving to the chimney
then she knew it had to be.
that santa claus is not only
in our hearts and minds
and will live throughout all time.
all children are supposed
to be asleep.
but through half closed eyes
they would peak.
she then heard the sounds in
the room below.
as she opened the door very slow.
to her surprise there was a tree
decorated 'oh so beautifully'.
and there under the tree
there was gifts galore
who would think - that they were poor.
as she started to look around
at the fireplace he was found.
he was having the milk and cookies
that were left that night.
' oh my gosh what a beautiful sight'.
he then put his finger to his nose
and just like the book
up the chimney he rose.
she went back to her room, and climbed
back into her bed, said her prayers
and laid down her head.
she awoke the next morning
thinking it was a dream.
when she heard her mother scream.
how is this possible? how can it be?
'all these presents, and with a tree.'
as she ran to her mothers side
the tears started to fill her eyes.
i don't know who did this? i have no clue
and i don't know what i should do.
she then told her what she heard
and saw the night before
when she opened up her bedroom door.
as we opened up the first package
from under the tree
we saw a metal frame with one word.
BELIEVE
now we put this question to you.
do you believe? is this story true?

A Christmas Tree! A Christmas Tree!
A Christmas tree! A Christmas tree!
With dark green needled memories
Of childhood dreams and mysteries
Wrapped present-like in front of me.
A Christmas tree! A Christmas tree!
I glimpse a past wherein i see
The child that then grew into me
Not forward fast but haltingly.
A Christmas tree! A Christmas tree!
A time for being with family
A time that's gone so fleetingly
Yet lives for always deep in me.
A Christmas tree! A Christmas tree!
When twelfth night comes whole hauntingly
One lingered look and then i see
No Christmas tree where it would be.
A Christmas tree! A Christmas tree!
With feelings now felt longingly
No corner in my house to see
The magic of that Christmas tree.

Scents Of Christmas' Past
When just a small girl, I seem now to remember when,
There was a special scent of Christmas in our home,
How the Christmas evergreen’s pine perfume,
Room to room, would seem to roam.
Even sounds seemed different back then,
Then they do somehow today,
Don’t know if it’s because I’ve grown accustom to them,
Not filled with that child-like excitement,
In my remembered, childhood Christmas way.
Maybe it’s because the nest is empty now?
Of my children’s laughter and joy,
Somehow that’s what Christmas Day sounds should be,
Filled up with little children,
All playing with their Christmas toys.
So when on Christmas morning,
As they all would rise,
They’d all run down to view the miracle,
Of Santa’s Clauses’ big surprise.
Then mom would brew some hot cocoa up,
Float some tiny marshmallows on their tops,
And every child would place their presents aside for awhile,
While they drank up every luscious drop.
Then all the relatives would arrive,
And share in the Christmas feast mom always had,
This is what I remember
All the joy the scents of Christmas
That always made me glad.

The Shy Christmas Tree And The Hundred Fairy Lights
Now the Christmas tree sits shyly
In the corner of the room,
Like a shining beam of brightness
In the dismal winter gloom,
All aglow with tiny twinkles
Of a hundred fairy lights
Dancing round shy, trembling branches
In the dark December nights.
Shiny tinsel shimmers sparkling,
Twined around like silver string,
While the multicoloured baubles
Turn around and gently swing,
All reflecting light and glitter
From the hundred fairy lights
Dancing round shy, trembling branches
In the dark December nights.
Stuck tight to the top’s a fairy
In her ballerina dress;
As to what she might be thinking
You will have to try and guess:
Is she looking on with longing
At the hundred fairy lights
Dancing round shy, trembling branches
In the dark December nights?
There are presents for the grown-ups
Underneath the Christmas tree
But there’s nothing for the children
Who will have to wait and see
What old Santa has got for them
While the hundred fairy lights
Dance around shy, trembling branches
In the dark December nights.
He will go collect his reindeer
And pack presents on his sleigh
And then fly among the moonbeams,
Just before it’s Christmas day,
Guided by the twinkling starshine
Bright as all those fairy lights
Dancing round shy, trembling branches
In the dark December nights.
He will wait until each infant
Is tucked up so tight asleep,
For they mustn’t ever catch him
And they mustn’t ever peep
Till he vanishes in stardust
Glittering bright as fairy lights
Dancing round shy, trembling branches
In the dark December nights.
And then, when it’s Christmas morning,
At the bottom of each bed
There will be a pile of presents
For each smiling, happy head
That sees toys and gifts, as welcome
As the hundred fairy lights
Dancing round shy, trembling branches
In the dark December nights.
And they’ll hurry down the staircase
For their breakfast and they’ll see
That the Christmas tree is smiling,
Joining in with all their glee
As it shakes, with happy laughter,
All its hundred fairy lights
Which dance round shy, trembling branches
In the dark December nights.
But the Christmas tree grows sadder,
For the next twelve days will fly
And then Christmas will be over
And it’s time to say goodbye,
Though it’s thankful for the friendship
Of the hundred fairy lights
Which danced round shy, trembling branches
In the dark December nights.
But one of its relations,
In a forest, far away,
Waits, in keen anticipation,
For next year’s Christmas day
When it stands, proud, in the corner
With a hundred fairy lights
To dance round brave, waving branches
In the dark December nights.

A Christmas Poem
Christmas is once more with us
with mistletoe and good cheer,
stocking hung on the mantle place
and presents under the tree.
People singing Christmas carols
entertaining you and me,
as Santa with his reindeer
landing on each house in sight.
Beaming and giggly faces
of children too excited to sleep,
with Christmas day tomorrow
they cannot wait for the sight.
Slowly drifting into dreams
of what might greet their eyes bright
as they listen for Santa’s reindeers
prancing along in the snow.
As sleep descends,
they wait for the morning light,
for Christmas is that time of year
when the world seems merry and right,
and so ends my Christmas poem.
Merry Christmas to all and goodnight.

The Christmas Vow
THE CHRISTMAS VOW
By Maryann Virack
In two thousand seven the protestors swore
We won’t celebrate Christmas. We won’t take it anymore
“You can’t say Christ. It’s really unfair
To those other religions that really don’t care”
So Christmas was cancelled the shops closed their doors
The memories of Christmas were now just folklore
The children were saddened. They couldn’t believe it
They wouldn’t accept it; not one tiny small bit
They had to find Santa. Where could he be?
They couldn’t find a stocking or a green Christmas tree
They walked through the city, not a light to be seen
No one was merry. Everyone was mean.
They searched every county, every state, every town
Every Christmas decoration had been taken down
The children were cranky. They searched in despair
But wherever they looked…there was no Christmas there
“We’ll find it, ” they uttered “We’ll not give up trying
Christmas is here, the grownups are lying.”
“I found Santa”, cried Pedro. “Look here”, said Elaine
“He was hiding with Rudolf and some old candy canes”
He was stuffed with the manger and wise men and elves
With Mary and Jesus they were filling the shelves
In that dusty old warehouse where no one dare go
Since the dream days of children in times long ago
When Christmas was merry and life filled with mirth
And carolers world over sang “Peace on Earth”.
When sugar plums danced and a star shone above
And a magical season was filled with God’s love.
When the birth of a baby was heralded on high
Before Christmas went missing and each eye was dry.
There once was a day, child; I remember it well
When reindeer once flew and angels rang bells
We baked Christmas cookies and ate Christmas roast beast
And hearts grew much larger at that holy day feast
Yes, Jesus was here child and Christmas was living
In the hearts of all people and their spirit of giving
Americans all over gave from the heart
And celebrated Christmas like they did from the start
They hung Christmas stockings and put the star on the tree
That was the way child it once used to be
It really was special, that day of Christ’s birth
And Santa was jolly despite his wide girth
But today it’s all gone I am sorry to say
Can’t say “Merry Christmas”; just “Happy Holidays”
Someone in power was tricked to believe
That Christmas was racist and Jesus must leave
An American tradition, that fat jolly old elf,
The tree and the manger don’t belong on a shelf.
So they unburied Santa and assembled the crèche
And sang Christmas carols and baked cookies fresh
They dug out the tinsel, the garlands and wreath
Found A Little Fir Tree and put presents beneath
They called “All ye Faithful” and sang out “Noel”
Put Christ back in Christmas and rang a red bell
They rejoiced in the spirit, sang “Oh Holy Night”
Cried “Merry Christmas to all and to all a good night”
They rekindled the dream that their parents once knew
With the Christ child and Santa and a Christmas tree too
They believed in a country where our forefathers trod
In freedom and liberty “One nation under God”
The spirit’s not missing. It’s wherever you look
In the eyes of each child, in every cranny and nook.
From the people who give to the poor and the needy
To The Little Match Girl and a Grinch who’s not greedy
Christmas still lives we won’t let it die
In the hearts of the children, in the wink of an eye
So in two thousand and eight and in all years from now
Let’s hold on to Christmas let’s make it our vow

Christmas - A Little Friend's Poem - Written By Amy Boothby, aged 10
Are you...........
ready for Christmas? , to decorate the tree,
The sparkling baubles that shine with glee,
The shops are filled with Christmas galore,
But the people are shouting, 'We want more',
Each and every leaf, is covered in snow,
We're still waiting for Santa's Ho! Ho! Ho! ,
The Christmas lights, light up the street,
Presents to open, people to greet,
Look what's under the tall green tree,
Are these presents all for me?

Memories From Christmases Past
Precious memories from Christmases past,
Forever, in my mind, will last and last.
We’d hang paper chains and balloons from the ceiling,
To give our home a really lovely, Christmassy feeling.
Tinsel, baubles and bells, adorned the Christmas tree,
Which, was lovingly decorated, by my dad and me.
On top of the tree, a heavenly angel would be placed:
Her dress was pure white, and was made of fine lace.
On Christmas morning, quite early, we would all rise,
And be thrilled with the lovely presents before our eyes.
On Christmas afternoon, we would all watch the TV,
And later, in the evening, we’d all enjoy a buffet tea.
We’d always buy crackers, which we all loved to pull,
And we’d eat our Christmas day roast, until, finally, full.
We’d have Christmas pudding, which I, for one, adored,
And over the top of it, we’d have double cream poured.
But when dad died, our Christmases seemed to fall apart,
And now, no longer, is it a special time within my heart.
Now it just seems to be a time of much anxiety and stress,
And, as an adult, I’m beginning to like it less and less.
I often wish that Christmas was still as it used to be,
When dad and I enjoyed decorating the Christmas tree.
As an adult, the years seem to speed by so very fast.
Oh, how I wish for those times of Christmases past!
