La Paloma in London

About Soho we went before the light;
We went, unresting six, craving new fun,
New scenes, new raptures, for the fevered night
Of rollicking laughter, drink and song, was done.
The vault was void, but for the dawn's great star
That shed upon our path its silver flame,
When La Paloma on a low guitar
Abruptly from a darkened casement came--
Harlem! All else shut out, I saw the hall,
And you in your red shoulder sash come dancing
With Val against me languid by the wall,
Your burning coffee-colored eyes keen glancing
Aslant at mine, proud in your golden glory!
I loved you, Cuban girl, fond sweet Diory.

The Void

By Samuel Sweetnam

Cold is the Void
That is what we are not
That is where we are to go
That is what we are to become

Dark is the void
That steals the night
That fills the heart
Of the greedy man

Black is the void
That hides the lost
That feeds the beast
That hunts the good

The void is cold
The void is dark
The void is black
The void is torture

If the void is all
We are to become
Then what is left
Is there no hope?

For one small child
Born one dark night
Among the void
Consuming the night

He brought the life
He brought the hope
Some two thousand years ago
He brought us light

So remember this
My dear friend
Of the babe born
On Christmas morn

He brought the Warm
He brought the light
He brought the Love
Among the night.

A Rainy Night In Soho

Here is one of the songs from the request list.
--- cut here ---
-------------------------------------------------------
Posted by Marshall Levin -- [email protected]
-------------------------------------------------------
Artist -> The Pogues
Title -> A Rainy Night In Soho
Album -> Poguetry In Motion
Release -> Warner YZ603CD 9031-75474-2
I've been loving you a long time
Down all the years, down all the days
And I've cried for all your troubles
Smiled at your funny little ways
We watched our friends grow up together
And we saw them as they fell
Some of them fell into Heaven
Some of them fell into Hell
I took shelter from a shower
And I stepped into your arms
On a rainy night in Soho
The wind was whistling all its charms
I sang you all my sorrows
You told me all your joys
Whatever happened to that old song
To all those little girls and boys
Now the song is nearly over
We may never find out what it means
But there's a light I hold before me
And you're the measure of my dreams
The measure of my dreams
Sometimes I wake up in the morning
The gingerlady by my bed
Covered in a cloak of silence
I hear you talking in my head
I'm not singing for the future
I'm not dreaming of the past
I'm not talking of the fist time
I never think about the last
Now the song is nearly over
We may never find out what it means
Still there's a light I hold before me
You're the measure of my dreams
The measure of my dreams

A Song For All Day

A rollicking song for the morn, my boy,
A rollicking song for the morn:
It's up and out with a laugh and shout,
While the bright sun circles the world about,
And the dew is on the corn, my boy,
The dew is on the corn.
Barefoot, brown, with trousers torn,
It's up and out with the morn.

A jolly good song for the noon, my boy,
A jolly good song for the noon:
It's out and away where the wild woods sway,
And the wind and the birds have a holiday,
And whistle an oldtime tune, my boy,
And whistle an oldtime tune.
Healthy, happy, a heart of June,
It's out in the woods at noon.

A wonderful song for the eve, my boy,
A wonderful song for the eve:
The sunset's bars and a trail of stars,
And the falls of the creek a mine of spars,
Or a weft of crystal weave, my boy,
A weft of crystal weave.
Hungry, tired, with nothing to grieve,
It's home again at eve.

A lullaby song for the night, my boy,
A lullaby song for the night:
When crickets cry and owlets fly,
And the house-hound bays the moon on high,
And the window-lamp shines bright, my boy,
The window-lamp shines bright.
A drowsy kiss and a bed snow-white,
And a lullaby-song for the night.

Eyes Craving Sight

Eyes craving sight
Ears craving sounds
Voice craving words
Hands craving a touch

You've seen the light
Emerging from the grounds
All light allures
You've touched too much

And now you're standing soundless mute
Eyeless and blind in earthly mansions
To find out your body is but a diving suit
Plunged into all three dimensions

Shiny Red Shoes In Soho

Shiny red shoes in Soho carry certain shady meanings
Understood by those who sadly stray that way.
Shiny red dress in Soho clearly means to welcome
Some attention from the punters as they pass.
Shiny red lips in Soho promise pleasures quite arcane
To those that glance, entranced as past they prance
But all these red enticers decked the prettiest, purest person
In the guise of an enchanting, tiny child
And innocence returned once more to squalid, sordid Soho
Whose embarrassment reflected shiny red.

Craving

Lying here on the couch
With my heart in the mouth
Realize you were right I was wrong and
Im in pieces and bits but thats nothing you can fix
Cause baby youre still my addiction
Ohhh
Every minutes like a thousand years
Since you were lying here
[chorus:]
In the middle of the night
I turn on the light
Too desperate to breathe
Cause I get this craving
Theres no time to waste gotta get a taste
Satisfy my need
Baby, wont you save me
Got this craving for you
For you...
Yeah yeah yeah yeah
Its like you live in these walls
I hear your voice down the hall
I swear I see your face its everywhere its every place
I start myself past the pain but still it wont go away
The more I try to forget I remember
Ohhh
Every minutes like a thousand years
Since you were lying here
[chorus:]
In the middle of the night
I turn on the light
Too desperate to breathe
Cause I get this craving
Theres no time to waste gotta get a taste
Satisfy my need
Baby, wont you save me
Got this craving
To lose myself in you and were standing in the rain
To keeping you awake through the night
I hunger for your touch
Cause I need you back whats wrong with that
No I cant be without you no more
In the middle of the night
I turn on the light
Too desperate to breathe
Cause I get this craving
Theres no time to waste
Gotta get a taste satisfy my need
Baby wont you save me
In the middle of the night
I turn on the light
Too desperate to breathe
Cause I get this craving
Theres no time to waste
Gotta get a taste satisfy my need
Baby wont you save me
Got this craving for you
Craving for you

Ban The Void

Ban the void.
Tch.
Ban the void.
Tch, tch.
Ban the void.
Tch.
Ban the void.
Tch, tch.

Grandma stopped baking cakes.
Tch.
Ban the void.
Tch, tch.
Brought me my first heartbreak.
Tch.
Ban the void.
I told her I couldn't take it.
She 'had' to bake another cake for me!
Tch.
Ban the void.

She said she was going on strike!
Tch.
Ban the void.
And even though I didn't like it!
Tch.
Ban the void.
She's not gonna cook in the kitchen,
She's itching to do something else to please!
Tch
Ban the void.
Tch.
Ban the void.

She brought herself a brand new car.
Tch.
Ban the void.
Tch, tch.
And drove to wherever she wanted.
Tch.
Ban the void.
She said she had her own special needs.
And will come and go whenever that need pleases!
Tch.
Ban the void.

I got so annoyed...
And I tried to stop that void deep down in me!
Oh...
Ban the void!

I couldn't go to sleep!
I dreamt of grandma's baking,
And it teased me!

I even cried my eyes.
But grandma's sweet potato pie kept creepin'.
Oh...
Ban the void!
Ban the void!
Oh...
Ban the void.

Grandma loved her brand new car.
And never got one ticket,
For her speedin'!

Ban the void.
Tch.
Ban the void.
Tch, tch.
Ban the void.
Oh...

Dedicated To:
In loving memory...

Craving!

Craving!
An essence within my heart,
Unknown.
Craving!
And yet I know this taste.
A familiarity embraces me.
Craving!
Bathing in the fragrance of it.
Hoping that it will covet me.
Once it identifies,
Which desire it gives that pleases.
Craving!
This life.
And its teasing!

A Fevered Poem

So, whoever is ill, my dear friends
Don't let the fevered thoughts go away
Gather them to treat with proper words
To set them right in rhythm anyway
One, two, three...line by line as they stand
Refresh and fine-tune them to display
Beats from their hearts a harmonic band
No more febrile they..yet fevered they say
'A Fevered Poem' of their cordial chords

Molly's First Drink

Molly brings the gin
to her lips
and allows the glass

to linger there
oh that smell
that takes me back

she says
although none other
could hear

too busy
with the raptures
of someone else’s

cheerful celebration
but nonetheless
she sips her drink

permitting the liquid
to swallow down
and it takes me back

she repeats
to that first drink
that Christmas

when Granddaddy
left the gin
in the parlour

the lid open
and me just
a young slip

of a girl
before the double figures came
and pouring a glass

and listening out
for the voices
of others

sipped quick
and hearing
a booming laugh

from the other room
probably Uncle Flint
tickling and touching

and the laughter
loud and dirty
was my Mother’s.

A Bird and flower upon the tree

A bird and flower upon the tree,
Sweet peony and oriole,
Each of them a perfect soul,
Song and sweetness manifest
The bird and flower we love the best
Side by side on the tall tree.

'Flower who art sunlight and fire, flower who art perfume and joy,
Sweetest of sweet,
Ah for the gift withheld!
Ah for the given gift's alloy!
Why must thy spirit exhale only in beauty and breath?
Ah for the voice thou hast not! I by thy side on the tree,
Telling the world of love, pain, and all raptures that be,
Raptures of laughter and life, raptures of tears and death,
Singing my heart to heaven, singing to earth at my feet;
Silence in thee.'

'Bird who art dew-drops and flame, bird who art rapture and song,
Sweetest of sweet,
Lo there's a voice part mine, songs that to me too belong,
Songs that grew of my growth, voice that has breathed my breath.
Bird that while I sit mute singest beside on the tree,
Hast thou ever a song taking no perfume of me?
Give forth my sweetness in song; bird, thou art singing for both,
Singing our hearts to heaven, singing to earth at our feet;
My voice in thee.'

On the tree-top side by side,
Sweet oriole and peony;
Music rings through earth and sky,
Sweet and sweet in sweetness lost
The flower and bird we love the most,
On the tree-top side by side.

A Happy Song

I need to write
A happy song tonight
To find that tune
And touch the moon
Caressed by the light
It feels so right
Cause not every night
You're holding me tight

I have to write
A happy song tonight
To find that rhythm
Of the heart's hymn
To be one with the beat
Of your laughter so sweet
Cause not every night
I feel so right

And the stars will be dancing
To this happy song I've written
And the clouds will be singing
With thunder's heavy drummin'
Cause not every night
We surrender and not fight

Let's feel the music
Of this happy song, its so sick
Breathe in, give in
I will make you live again

And the stars will be dancing
To this happy song I've written
And the clouds will be singing
With thunder's heavy drummin'
Cause not every night
We surrender and not fight

This happy song I write
For this happy night

This happy song
This happy night.

Let Me Enjoy

Minor Key

I

Let me enjoy the earth no less
Because the all-enacting Might
That fashioned forth its loveliness
Had other aims than my delight.

II

About my path there flits a Fair,
Who throws me not a word or sign;
I'll charm me with her ignoring air,
And laud the lips not meant for mine.

III

From manuscripts of moving song
Inspired by scenes and dreams unknown
I'll pour out raptures that belong
To others, as they were my own.

IV

And some day hence, towards Paradise
And all its blest -- if such should be --
I will lift glad, afar-off eyes
Though it contain no place for me.

Laughter - Laughter

LAUGHTER - LAUGHTER

laughter - laughter here I come
to make my friend smile and calm
jump and jump to the left to the right
thru the day time and night

laughter - laughter here I am
to make true all the sweetest dreams
like my friend always has in sleep
thru the very beautiful night
that will never skip

laughter - laughter here we are
my friend and I are blab - blab - blab
and we are happy and careless
cause the better future are waiting for us

laughter - laughter, who are you?
WHAT! you don't recognize me?
I am sorry, I thought I know you
but just let it be
because a real friendship doesn't care who we are

(build a strong good friendship among us)

Twilight Alehouse

1971. released as b-side of I know what I like single, 1974.
Is it really true what theyre saying
Are you really sure theres nobody come for me
When Im walking home there is no-one
Once there was a house, full of laughter - so warm
Trying to pretend there is someone
Someone who will care when I need it
I will now receive my comfort, conjured by the magic power of wine
Just a drink, Ill get that drink, and Im feeling good
Just a drink, Ill get that drink, and Im feeling fine
Just a drink to take my sorrow
Just a drink and you can blast tomorrow
Just a drink to make me feel like a man again
Now Im down
When I walk outside, there is nowhere
Children follow me, with their laughter - so cold...
Casting just a glance at the churchyard
Casting just a glance, at my painted female friend.
Now Im on my way, I am falling
Got to find some elp, ooh I will need that now
So I will receive my comfort, conjured by the magic power of wine
Just a drink, Ill get that drink, and Im feeling good
Just a drink, Ill get that drink, and Im feeling fine
Just a drink to take my sorrow
Just a drink and you can blast tomorrow
Just a drink to make me feel like a man again
Now Im down...
I will now receive my comfort, conjured by the magic power of wine
Just a drink, Ill get that drink, and Im feeling good
Just a drink, Ill get that drink, and Im feeling fine
Just a drink to take my sorrow
Just a drink and you can blast tomorrow, now...

A Lovely Poem For You

once I peep inside
on a deep shadow night
and we must
keep it like a cock drink
and we never love it
but once you hate it katee
I feel you a dancing mood

and that night
I walk out of her shadow light
and want to keep you be free
you may steal my heart katee
and I guess it to read and your sweet look
and I wish to write my poem again here
you drink this night and we share it... free...
this must not be of our lov
I steal your drink and peep your door
You may guess it to write.......

''What does it mean what does it mean''
you shiver at night
Your wallet not holds my slim photo?
You not come each place I may not go
and seems to have much better if we are share again
We light one candles and like to stay up night
and wish to kiss
and I write this for you dear

Darkness

I am the night
I am the void

That consumes every deceased soul
I lie in every man's heart

Where they hide their darkest secrets
I am the fear of every young child

Though I run from light
I follow behind its every footstep

To consume everything it has left behind
To seal it in my prison eternally

Devoid of all light
Devoid of all hope

I am what welcome's the fallen
I am what hide's every beast

Waiting to tear the flesh off your bones

I am the void
I am the nothing

I am Darkness

Drink Drink Sire

Drink drink sire
None other times
Insistent more
No other shadow
But thyself
Moon and stars

Drink drink sire
Thy creed to followers
Lonely hearts
Under the moon
And in the flowers

Drink drink sire
What times other
What seasons other
Spring and stars
And the moon
And song of love

Drink drink sire
To the last drop
Un satiated
More and more
From moon now
To stars now
To milky way

Drink drink sire
To the passion of drink
To meet again in the journey
