We Mean to Say

We mean to say, it never has been granted
That anyone but England could decide,
In the crease or at the wicket,
Just exactly what was cricket
And, of course, I mean to say, we have our pride.
The great old game was, as it were, invented
On the playing fields of Eton, and all that,
And to try to steal our thunder
When you think we've made a blunder
Why, dear old bean, that's talking thro' the hat!

We mean to say - the game originated
With us, back in the dear old top-hat days,
And the gentlemen who played it,
By their sterling methods, made it
A top-hole game for sportsmen - hence the phrase.
So, hang it all! If something 'isn't cricket'
It's our prerogative to say so, flat.
And it's cheek, you know, cool cheek,
When you dash in, so to speak,
And take the words out of our mouths like that.

We mean to say, there's quite a choice of phrases
That you might use, if you must make a fuss.
Curse away of you feel hot;
But it's simply bally rot
To apply our own pet shibboleth to us!
There's the code, you know - our code, we would remind you.
We made it for ourselves, and mean to stick it.
And to try to knock us flat
With a boomerang like that
By gad! It isn't done! It isn't cricket!

Cricket on the Hearth

When red-nosed Winter takes the road,
An icicle his walking-stick,
When frost is on the woodman's load,
And snow is falling fast and thick,
Come, lusty youth and sapless eld,
Let's make a circle round the blaze
And talk of stumps,
Of nasty bumps,
That flew and came in sunny days.
For Cricket is played again, again,
At freezing time in Hull or Bath;
When summer's done the game's not gone--
There's Cricket on the Hearth!

Here's Jones from Rugby, Eton Jack,
And Grandpapa who, long ago,
Loved hitting when the Field was slack,
And crumped the bowling, swift or slow!
No more he's nimble on the green,
But what a history he tells
Of Surrey men
And hits for ten,
And heaps of most tremendous Swells!
For Cricket is played again, again,
At freezing time in Hull or Bath;
When summer's done the game's not gone--
There's Cricket on the Hearth!

The girls may call to Hide-and-Seek,
And lovely lasses take the floor;
But we discuss the Lob and Sneak,
The Canvas, Umpire, Over, Score!
How great a game to fill July,
May, June, and August with delights,
Yet in the frost
Be never lost,
But stir the blood on nipping nights!
For Cricket is played again, again,
At freezing times in Hull or Bath;
When summer's done the game's not gone--
There's Cricket on the Hearth!

Cricket Is Just Another Game

Cricket just like baseball and football and golf is just another game
And though some great cricket players have won Worldwide fame
Cricket for most cricket fans like followers of all other sports
From their life cares is just an escape of sorts
The praises of sports celebrities millions every day do sing
And nowadays sports Worldwide is a huge thing
And those not in some way involved in sport a minority
At least that is how it does seem to me
I've got nothing against cricket I'd like to make that clear
Though on t v and radio so much of it to see and hear
Like every sport for millions of poor people I am aware
A temporary escape from their lives every care
And cricket after all is just another game
Like every other sport it is much the same.

Cricket World-Cup’99 (Indian Style)

The Carnival of World Cricket
Is off to a start this May;
The seventh time, the world teams clash,
For glory, seeking their way!
All will be o’er in six weeks ’time;
Could India pull off a win?
Time will decide if Azhar’s boys,
Can stun the world once again.
No more Cricket’s an English game!
It’s love has caught all men;
The fever is on; game has begun;
The testing ground- England;
The Indian squad has gone ahead,
To get acclimatized;
Eleven kilos is the Cup’s weight!
Anyone gets enticed.
Few hundred pounds
Is the cost of the Cup;
Green light is on; the end will come;
Non one has yet given up!
A huge money-prize is at stake;
And Cricket-lovers are gay!
Glued to their T.V sets all stay;
The young and old, this May.
Not all can win laurels, acclaim;
O Indians, go proclaim;
Thy uniqueness and love of the game,
‘tis a worthy cause and name!
Weather and pressures could decide,
The pitch as well, the game;
With some effort and some Dame Luck,
It is anyone’s game;
Do your job as well as you can,
And pray good things happen;
The LORD decides the Game at Lords!
The Game is much open!

A Win Of Cricket 2011

So I remember this cricket we win
with fresh flower for you Indians
and the wonderful sights you made here
winning the match 2011

Then we 'll go to there
deep under the emotions
and go over a great moments
to skate through our great dreams
and be under the thrill

I love to play with them,
And to watch them with you
I cannot live without cricket
I will never forget playing cricket in those days

The Wicket Cricket Critic

If the cricket critics' nagging
Merits stern official gagging
Which I doubt
How would critical ascetics,
With their prosy homiletics,
Shut it out?
And the question then arises:
If more cricketing surprises,
Such as bodyline, begin to threaten cricket,
And another stunt, when sprung,
Call for clicking of the tongue,
Should a cricket critic critically click it?

When the barrackers grow lyric
In a manner most satiric
And profane,
How, one ventures still to wonder,
May the clamor be kept under?
How restrain?
For one barbaric larrik-
In can do a lot of barrack-
In', and cause a lot of worry at the wicket.
But would sportsmen be abusing
Cricket canons in refusing
To supply that cricket critic with a ticket?

As a critic analytic
Of the cricket critics' critic
I would say,
When we criticise their cricket,
Then the players have to stick it,
Come what may.
No specific soporific
May be used; for it is diffic-
Ult to strike a critic partly paralytic.
So there's nothing gained in seeking,
As I know; and I am speaking
As a critic of the cricket critic's critic.

A great tribute

A great tribute to cricket legend....

It was solid and impregnable wall
Given the signal and made a final call
World may remember his contribution
An honor to country and to institution as well

What a tiring game to retire
Thousands applaud and admire
Cricket is gentleman's game
Where people excel and earn the fame

"Rahul "is such a shining star
Ruled the scene for decades and waged a war
Made the game as holy temple
Worshipped till last saved all from any troubles

Bright record with memorable feat
We shall bow our head and greet
Such a star is never born again
The retirement is really a pain

We may miss his absence
The people around may remain tense
Yet game is game and one has to declare plan
Swim over the water and go peacefully with calm

* "Rahul Dravid "is cricketer from India

Cricket

(sung by the vicar)
Some people say that life is a game, well if this is so
Id like to know the rules on which this game of life is based.
I know of no game more fitting than the age old game of cricket
It has honour, it has character and its british.
Now God laid down the rules of life when he wrote those ten commandments
And to cricket those ten same rules shall apply.
Show compassion and self-righteousness and be honest above all
And come to gods call with bat and ball.
Now the devil has a player and hes called the demon bowler,
Hes shrewd, hes rude and hes wicked.
He is sent by sinful satan and hes out to take your wicket
And you know that thats not cricket.
Hell baffle you with googlies with leg breaks and offspin
But keep a level head and dont let that demon in.
So keep a straight bat at all times, let the Bible be your guide
And youll get by, yes youll get by.
All through your life hell try to bowl you out
Beware the demon bowler.
Hes crafty and deceitful and hell try to l.b.w.,
And bowl a maiden over.
The devil takes the weak in spirit and so we must always be courageous
And remember that God is on your side.
So keep old satan in your sights and play the straight and narrow line
And youll get by, yes youll get by.

The National Game Of Australia

The National game of Australia is Australian Rules Football
And the Aussies who love their game say 'tis the greatest game of all
Soccer, Rugby Union and Rugby League and Cricket have their roots elsewhere
But no truer Aussie sportsman than an Aussie Rules footy player,
A game born on Australian soil it surely is Australia's own
And the legend of great footy players in their deaths has even grown
In September at the famed M C G in Melbourne on A F L Grand Final Day
Close to one hundred thousand people flock to watch Australia's best teams play
Though many like both codes of rugby and cricket and soccer a game that is played Worldwide
Australia's National game is Aussie Rules to many that's a source of pride
The National Game of Australia and it's great claim to fame
Is that it was born and bred in Australia and is the only true Australian Game
And it surely is a true Aussie as Aussie as can be
And though some others may like introduced games far better with what I say many would agree.

Code Of Silence

Deep in the night
I can hear you calling my name
How can I try to help you woman
If you go on hiding your pain
Baby, baby, the tears on your pillow are real
You cant go on pretending to me
When I see the pain that you feel
A code of silence, is a dreadful thing
It can make you feel harder
It can keep you hanging on a string
Here in the darkness
When I hear you calling my name
A code of silence is a deadly game
Its a deadly game (whats that you say)
Its a deadly game (speak to me now)
Its a deadly game (deadly game)
Lost in your dreams
Trouble on your face in the pale moonlight
Nowhere to run youve got to let me know
Where you are standing tonight
Baby baby baby
I know that youre hurting inside
Open your heart
I know that we can make it
If you talk to me now
A code of silence, is a deadly thing
It can make you feel harder
It can keep you hanging on a string
Here in the darkness
When I hear you calling my name
A code of silence is a deadly game
Its a deadly game (whats that you say)
Its a deadly game (speak to me now)
Its a deadly game (deadly game).....

Sporting Australia

Since Archer won the first two
Melbourne Cups in 1860 and 61
The Stawell Gift debuted in 1875
We beat England at cricket in 1877
Sport has played a major role
In our lifestyles and leisure time

Harrison and Wills down in Melbourne
Developed a football code in 1858
That became a national passion
Only fairies play aerial ping pong
Said the blokes from the north
Through broken teeth and noses

The Don, Sir Donald Bradman
Heads a list of batsmen
Who terrorised the World's best bowlers
Lillee and Thompson scared many openers
While Warnie mesmerised many others
As Australia ruled World cricket

Alan Bond put up the bucks
Ben Lexcen designed a winged keel
The Boxing Kangaroo was born
John Bertram a skilled captain
Together they wrestled the Auld Mug
Out of Newport for the first time

Immigration in the fifties
Brought many new things to Australia
One of these things saw men kicking a netball
Soccer was up against other codes
These migrants didn't care
They flocked to their games

Form the motherland they brought rugby
The game they play in heaven
A gentleman's game so they say
Flat noses and cauliflower ears
Was the only reward in union
For defending our honour Worldwide

Many sports have tried
Many sports have failed
Trying to lure Aussies
Away from cricket and football
It's hard to get a kid
Out of his dad's footsteps

A piece of wood and a ball
In a paddock park or backyard
A cricket match is born
So proud of our sporting history
Edwin Flack won gold in 1896
Yeah mate, we've been to all the games

Ballad of Bopard Defied

As I came to a playing-field on happy summer day
Two strudy youths I did espy; at cricket they did play.
One had the ball, one had the bat, and, with a right good smack,
As one tossed up the crimson sphere, the other smote it back.
Now, as I reached the bowler's end, I saw the young man quail;
His hand they shook, his knees went crook, his face was ashen pale;
Then, with a gulty kind of look, he cast the ball away,
And in a weak and trembling voice these words to me did say:
(In a tearful, pleading voice, with plenty of temolo and shivering grass.)

'Don't tell them that you saw me,
Or that I misbehaved.
Their methods over-aw me;
But I would not be enslaved.
I love my freeders, msiter, as much as any man;
But, oh, I love my bit of cricket, too.
And I dearly love to bowl,
But the great Board of Control,
They would chain me to their chariot if they knoo.'
(Adopt severe judicial manner, frowning darkly.)

'Young man,' I said, 'it grieves me this state of things to find,
For it is all too clear to me you have the crim'nal mind.
Thus to play without a licence and the noble Board defy
Is very reprehensible. 'Tut, tut!' I said, 'Fie, fie!'
With salt tears streaming from his eyes, he bowed his head in shame.
'Come, come,' I said, 'there's hope for you. Buck up and play the game.'
Then I eyed the other stripling; but, much to my dismay,
In tones most ungrammatical these words I heard him say: -
(In ringing, defiant accents, full of roughneck pride.)

'Go tell them that you seen me;
Go bowl it in their ear.
But no Board won't come between me
An' the game I 'old so dear,
I don't want to go to Indier or England with no team,
Fair Ostral-i-ar is good enough fur me!
I will never sell me soul
To no crool Board of Control;
For me favorite game is ping-pong, an' I'm free!'

Game of Cricket

Cricket is a game of fun
Throughout the television is on,
Especially when Sachin and Sehwag are
Making run.
It is worth to watch cricket,
When Pathan brothers are taking wicket.
When Rohit is going out on zero,
Mahendra Singh Dhoni is declared as the hero.
When Tanveer and Gul are in fix,
Dhoni and Yuvraaj are hitting six.
When Raina is hitting a four,
Rival team can do nothing to check the score.
When by Harbhajan the ball is caught,
Entire team of opponent are in thought.
When there is a big target to chase,
Every player is enthusiastic to win the craze.
When Sehwag is double digit score,
Heart beat of every captain is increasing
More and more.
When salman Butt is dropping an easy catch,
Ishant and Sreesanth awarded man of the match.
So in short, cricket is a fun,
But only when India has won.

Games, Gambling and Wars!

Playing game as training before waging war well
Kings, soldiers and all guys spent time in Chess!

As brave soldiers going to Mahabharata war then
All witness cricket players entering the field now!
Betting on cricket players go on outside the field
While spectators encouraging players as on arena!

Betting on horses in horse race after taking loan
There is no chance of knowing victory or defeat!
When game becomes serious after defeat both
Debtors and debtees have real fight to death now!

Same thing happened in Mahabharata epic too!
After dice game opponent became ruler ordering
Slaves spend 12 yrs. in forest and 1 yr. in incognito;
Then real war between Gauravas and Pandavas
Brought Lord Krishna to make dharma settle all!

If game becomes real act universal disaster is sure!
Games should foster friendship but not enmity ever;
Gambling should be banned for good of mankind sure!

An Aussie Christmas Day

In the park after eating barbequed fry the family a game of cricket play
In the warmth of the sunshine of an Aussie Christmas Day
A perfect day for Christmas around 24 degrees
On an afternoon made pleasant by a cool and freshening breeze
On this day in the Land of plenty a thought we ought to spare
For the people who are doing it hard in the bigger world out there
The Homeless and the Stateless dying of hunger and disease
In the refugee camps of the World thirty million refugees
Yet even in the Land of plenty the faces of poverty one does meet
The Homeless and God forsaken who live their lives on the street
Amongst the many well to do the faces of poverty
The outcasts and fringe dwellers of human society
Still a happy Christmas to you on this Aussie Christmas Day
As the family in the sunshine a game of cricket play.

In The Only Pub In Penshurst

In the only pub in Penshurst saturday is the big night
Some of the locals there for a meal and drinks of their worries make light
And some even have their children there in a child friendly place
And everyone seems happy a smile on every face.

In the only pub in Penshurst I was made feel welcome there
It did not seem to bother them that I was from elsewhere
To me they were so welcoming as if I were a long lost friend
And I felt like a Local there before the night did end.

In the only pub in Penshurst they sell the best of beer
And talk of cricket and football one is obliged to hear
The Aussies playing cricket in England and football finals time drawing near
And Spring around the corner it is that time of year.

In the only pub in Penhurst though there I was not known
The locals made me feel welcome as if I were one of their own
I had gained at least twenty new friends by last drinks at closing time
And to these lovely people I dedicate this rhyme.

The poetry of the earth is never dead

True that the poetry of the earth is never dead

The grasshopper and the cricket testify that

But another great war will take place

It will a nuclear one I am sure

That will be the end of grasshopper and cricket

That will be the end of the poetry of earth

Presently with another great war

our dear earth will turn into a piece of charcoal in a moment

to dissolve in the space

Thank you Herr Einstein

Thank you Oppenheimer

Thank you Gamow

Thanks to the disinterested curiosity of science
