The Freetrade Rabbit Pie
Ses Cullen, the cockie, he ses to me:
'Now, I puts it to you in this way:
If a feller....(Woah, Ginger! Come over, yeh cow!)....
If a feller sets out fer to say
Where he happens to stand in this politics game,
And to reason the why and the how,
He has got to have somethink to back up the same,
As the sayin' is....(Woah there, yeh cow!)
Ses Cullen, the cockie, e ses to me:
'Well, I reasons it out fer yeh so:
There's this 'ere Pertection an' this 'ere....(Woah Nell!
Come over there, Ginger! Way! Woah!)....
There's this 'ere Pertection an' this 'ere Freetrade,
Which I never 'ave quite understood,
Till I figures it out be the blunders I made
While I scratched fer me own livelihood.
'When first I took up me selection out 'ere
I was votin' Freetrade pretty strong!
An' to live on the cheap was me centril idear,
An' I couldn't see anythink wrong
With livin' on rabbits, fer rabbits was cheap,
As you'll probably quite understand,
Fer, back in that time we was breedin' a heap
On me own, an' the neighborin' land.
'There wus Sanderson had the next selection to me;
He bred mostly rabbits an' debts;
An' Jones, an' McPherson, an' Sandy McGee
Had heaps of the dear little pets.
So I figgers ut out to meself, an' I owns
That this puttin' up fences is rot;
I'd be wantin' the rabbits of Sandy an' Jones
When I'd et up me own little lot.
'So I cleared off a bit an' I sowed down me grass,
An' I lived upon rabbits an' duff,
Which was cheap, you'll allow, but as months came to pass,
I was just about gettin' enough.
I was pinin' fer change, so I reckoned I'd breed
Some sheep an' a bullock or two;
But them dash Freetrade rabbits kep' eatin' the feed
Just as fast as the bloomin' stuff grew!
'It was here that I gave up me Freetrade fer good;
An' I set about riggin' a fence -
Jest a sort o' low tariff of barbwire an' wood.
(I admits I was long gettin' sense.)
'Now this,' reckons I, 'will keep most of 'em out,
While ut lets just a few of 'em in!'
You will note, all along, I 'ave not the least doubt,
I was keen upon savin' me tin.
'But I'd come to icknowledge that breedin' the pests
Was a false an' mistaken idear:
So I poisons me own, an' I digs out the nests
Till I got me place pretty well clear.
But me chock-an'-log fence was a sight fer sore eyes!
It was far frum Pertection, I owns;
Fer I stil hugged the notion of eatin' cheap pies
That was bred be McPherson an' Jones.
'An' them rabbits was cheap - you might think I was dense,
But I couldn't deny they was cheap.
So still they come in through th egaps in the fence
An' took 'alf o' the grass from me sheep....
The sudden, one mornin', it struck me - fair whack!
An' I seen ut as plain as could be:
Wot about all the grass that them rabbits took back
To McPherson an' Jones an' McGee?
'There was Sanderson's rabbits consuimin' the feed
That belonged to me bullicks an' cheep!
An' here was me helpin' 'em! Thinkin' I'd need
Of a bunny or two in the cheap!....
I was solid Pertection in less than a week.
An' me nettin' was up in quick time;
An' now, you will notice, me bullicks is sleek,
An' me mutton, I tell yeh, is prime.
'So you take ut frum me....(Woah there, Ginger, yeh cow!)....
Ses old Cullen, the cockie ses he:
'I'm a certain an' solid Pertectionist now.
fer I'm sick of the bunny that's free.
'Low Tariff' is lettin' in rabbits to eat
The grass that you want fer yer sheep,
An' doin' in chances of raisin' good meat
In the hope of a pie on the cheap.
'An' if these politicians 'as got any sense -
(An' I've 'eard as there's some with a head) -
They will give over patchin' their chock-an'-log fence,
An' put up new nettin' instead.
Fer I've found that the nettin's the sensible way,
An' I'm happy and properous now.'
Ses Cullen the cockie, he ses to me, 'Hey!
Git on with yeh, Ginger, yeh cow!'

Rabbit
Rabbits, rabbits everywhere
Bigger than a rat
Smaller than a hare
Jump, hop in the grass
Eating carrots
Hoping fast
Rabbits, rabbits fluffy fur
Hunting season
They hustle and stir
Pointy ears, bushy tails
Wet nose
Hind legs down the trail
Rabbits, rabbits into holes
Time for bed
Bless their souls
Now all tucked in and put to sleep
No noise in the hole
Not even a peep

Judgment pending
The god is too busy to take note of
Your complaints against your sinners.
He still sits on trillions like this:
From grass against rabbits,
From rabbits against fox
From small fish against big fish
Sins were committed here with no
Provocations from the victims though

The Vengeance
The Vengeance
There is no war it is all happening on TV, for our
entertainment, I look out of the window and see
no dead bodies, no blood or bombed buildings,
or soldiers prancing about, except Pedro coming
back after hunting rabbits. He hates rabbits since
one chased him and bit his bum, he was twelve
at the time but the indignity made him malicious.
He hunts rabbits in the morning, they hear him
come and hide in burrows, except for the unwise
that think they can make play hide and seek with
him. Pedro is a crack shot and at times bag one,
which is good for us, had he always missed his
hatred may have grown to include us and the war
would move from the TV screen on to our street.

People's dreams are made out of what they do all day. The same way a dog that runs after rabbits will dream of rabbits. It's what you do that makes your soul, not the other way around.

Howlin At The Moon
Words and music by hank williams, sr.
I [c] know theres never been a man in the awful [c7] shape Im [f] in
I cant even [c] spell my name, my [d7] heads in such a [g7] spin
To-[c] day I tried to eat a steak with a big old [c7] table-[f] spoon
You got me chasin rabbits, [c] walkin on my hands
...and [g7] howlin at the [c] moon.
Well, (*sug), I took one look at you and it almost drove me mad
And then I even went and lost what little sense I had
Now I cant tell the day from night, Im crazy as a loon
You got me chasin rabbits, pullin out my hair and howlin at the moon.
Some friends of mine asked me to go out on a huntin spree
cause there aint a hound dog in this state that can hold a light to me
I eat three bones for dinner today, then tried to tree a coon
You got me chasin rabbits, scratchin fleas and howlin at the moon.
I rode my horse to town to day and a gas pump we did pass
I pulled im up and I hollered whoa!, said fill im up with gas
The man picked up a monkey wrench and wham!, he changed my tune
You got me chasin rabbits, spittin out teeth and howlin at the moon.
I never thought in this old world a fool could fall so hard
But honey baby, when I fell the whole world must have jarred
I think Id quit my doggish ways if youd take me for your groom
You got me chasin rabbits, pickin out rings and howlin at the moon

Soul On Fire
Ooh yeah, there you were
Standin' outside the door
Years since I told you I
Couldn't go on this way no more
Had no explanation
F-r-u-s-tration
Thought I was so very sure
Oh, oh
So you went on your way
Hittin' up at the party scene
Actin' as if you were
Entirely over me
Dancin' with all the ladies
Just so the news would make it
Directly to the hot hot line
Now you're settin' my soul on fire
Woah
Woah
Didn't know how good it was 'til you were gone
Oh
Woah
Now you're playin' with my head
And you only forget
All the things I put you through
But I never stopped lovin' you
Forget all that I said
Can't we go back to bed
Let bygones go on by
'Cause now you're settin' by soul on fire
Woah
Woah
Didn't know how good it was 'til you were gone
Woah
Woah
Now I only want you back so come on home
Woah
Woah
Didn't know how much I'd miss you on my own
Oh
Baby come on home
So find it in your heart
Hear my apology
We've taken it this far
Don't you want the rest
The best of me
Oh
Woah
Woah
Didn't know how good it was 'til you were gone
Woah
Woah
Now I only want you back so come on home
Woah
Woah
Didn't know how much I'd miss you on my own
Oh
Baby come on home
Mm, mm, mm

Coloured Eggs
Coloued eggs for a culture,
And of he story of a rabbit that laid them!
Oh, this culture is yet to know the truth;
For rabbits do not lay eggs!
Why should they teach the children this way?
And of coloured eggs lay by rabbits;
But this culture cannot change,
For history had made them so.

Don’t be cheap
Buy not a thing because it’s cheap.
Don’t let others make you cheap.
To be greedy is to be cheap.
To be selfish is to be cheap.
To poke your nose is a cheap thing.
Don’t be cheap; better be poor.

Old Rupert
She has had him since he was a pup some thirteen years or so
And between Genevieve and her border collie the bond of friendship grow
In his prime in the late nineties going back ten years ago
Old Rupert not the dog he was the years have left him slow
A beautiful black and white dog his muzzle has turned to gray
But he still digs for rabbits when he gets the chance his natural dog way
He comes home to Genevieve with an earthy coat and earth around his face and jaws
And she scolds him as she brushes him and washes the earth from his paws
To dig for rabbits to a dog is not doing any wrong
And for this Genevieve is quick to forgive him the bond between them strong
Old Rupert is not hard to please his needs in life are small
A walk or a drive in the car are things he loves best of all
Genevieve has had since he was a pup in nineteen ninety four
He was a fine dog in his prime going back ten years or more.

Retiring Early
A man who did retire early
each night, and was a rather burly
well-fed and stocky specimen,
would always have lights out at ten.
One evening, it was in May,
the month when younger folk will play,
he somehow failed, did not remember
woke up next day, it was November.
This shows the act of breaking habits
should really be left to rabbits.
You see, a rabbit either sleeps
or checks the basement, where it keeps
digested pellets for re-use,
but rabbits always (is this news?)
are in the mood to....well, to hop,
they'll do this easily, non-stop.
So, if a rabbit oversleeps,
he's done his homework, heaps and heaps,
it matters little, but for man
he's got to do it while he can.

There is little use building a fence around the garden to keep out the rabbits.
0010 Memory
and brought back with her
the first few primroses she did not pick
tucked neat into the hedgerow
a wisp of sheepwool
caught on wire she did not touch
a dewdro p which the sun caught as she passed
rabbits who lifted softbrush ears
paused then hopped away and yet not fast
a slight breeze which did not touch the primroses
which blew the wisp of sheepwool a little for a moment
which trembled the dewdro p into colours
and yet it stayed on the grass stalk
in the night
the primroses sheltered in her and grew imperceptibly
the sheepwool almost touched her
the dewdro p joined the air around her
the rabbits slept close to her
the breeze sighed and waited outside the window
in the morning they awoke together

We don’t know
From where &
On what conditions
Our Master brought a
Blood thirsty Tiger
To our land &
Said-
Come Dear!
Welcome to my soil
And prey on
All the Deers, Rabbits, Men & Asses…
In gay abandon
The Tiger leapt into our land
And started devouring one by one
Our Deers, Rabbits, Men & Assess…
In one breath
And finished all
In some days.
Now,
No one remains alive in our land
Except, the hungry Tiger &
Master of ours.

Regret
i do not know much about turtles
but i like to know one
they say turtles are not really slow
they are just gentle
and cool
as they live more in the water
rather than
on land
i have regrets though
not having known
that turtles
just want to be slow
and be not rushed
like
they are forced to be what they are not
by this rabbit
but there's one thing though that hurts
when turtles claim the value
of rationality
as though it is the only ingredient of a good
personality
i like to say, i like emotions too
turtles and rabbits that feel and tell the world
not to hurt each other anymore
but just be themselves
and be free and
be loved
and be appreciated
for what they are
unique
and long for a clique
i still think that this world is as beautiful as me
as you
as we together
writing poems and have fun
wading on the pond and basking in the sun
come, come, let us join our hands
rabbits and turtles on strong bonds
smile!

The Hunter And Dog
The Hunter.
The man who crosses the field carries his shotgun
tucked into his left arm. In his belt five rabbits hang.
This is not a hobby hunter in camouflage outfit,
but a mall time farmer who uses the wildlife to
augment his meager income… his dog that has been
walking at heel runs in front of him, barks, and up
from the tall, dry grass a rabbit springs a shot and
now he has six rabbits hanging from his belt….
He will sell his catch later at a hotel or restaurant.
The man who crossed field, his face is naturally dark,
by years spent outdoors, walks into a landscape of
trees and bushes and disappears from view.

Lost Control
Your a problem child
you got me running wild
I came to save you, tried to but I ran for miles
I got my breath back now
I'm gonna let you down
it's vain to save you, tried to but I don't know how
Woah Oh Woah Oh
you told me
don't let go don't let me down
Woah Oh Woah Oh
Control is lost
Control is lost and I won't be around
Don't wanna change you girl
don't wanna save the world
Don't wanna blame you for the same things you just can't learn
I guess it's my turn now
I'm gonna shut my mouth
Your gonna hate it cause this time I won't be around
Woah Oh Woah Oh
you told me
don't let go don't let me down
Woah Oh Woah Oh
Control is lost
Control is lost and I won't be around!
Woah Oh Woah Oh
you told me
don't let go don't let me down
Woah Oh Woah Oh
Control is lost
Control is lost and I won't be around
Woah Oh
Don't let go don't let me down
Woah Oh Yeah
Woah Oh
Don't let go don't let me

The Springtime
The red eyes of rabbits
aren't sad. No one passes
the sad golden village in a barge
any more. The sunset
will leave it alone. If the
curtains hang askew
it is no one's fault.
Around and around and around
everywhere the same sound
of wheels going, and things
growing older, growing
silent. If the dogs
bark to each other
all night, and their eyes
flash red, that's
nobody's business. They have
a great space of dark to
bark across. The rabbits
will bare their teeth at
the spring moon.

Just an Idle Poem
A cargo plane, loaded with white rabbits, got lost in a heavenly
storm and landed on the moon, the pilot declared himself king.
The second pilot would have none of it, slew the pilot, declared
a republic, with him as president, and freed the rabbits.
When all the little bottles of booze planes carry for hospitality,
were empty the president got depressed and threw himself;
off the moon, was sucked up into a black hole and woke up on
the Australian outback and got a job a camel rider with an all
consuming hatred for airline pilots. The moon rabbits, however,
thrived lived on nourishing dust and moon dew. But slowly they
changed appearance and became moonbeams that lit up parks
summer nights and make lovers swoon. A cynic may say they
became inconsequent spectres, useless as a poem written for
pleasure and lacking in moral judiciousness.

Puppy And I
I met a Man as I went walking:
We got talking,
Man and I.
'Where are you going to, Man?' I said
(I said to the Man as he went by).
'Down to the village, to get some bread.
Will you come with me?' 'No, not I.'
I met a horse as I went walking;
We got talking,
Horse and I.
'Where are you going to, Horse, today?'
(I said to the Horse as he went by).
'Down to the village to get some hay.
Will you come with me?' 'No, not I.'
I met a Woman as I went walking;
We got talking,
Woman and I.
'Where are you going to, Woman, so early?'
(I said to the Woman as she went by).
'Down to the village to get some barley.
Will you come with me?' 'No, not I.'
I met some Rabbits as I went walking;
We got talking,
Rabbits and I.
'Where are you going in your brown fur coats?'
(I said to the Rabbits as they went by).
'Down to the village to get some oats.
Will you come with us?' 'No, not I.'
I met a Puppy as I went walking;
We got talking,
Puppy and I.
'Where are you going this nice fine day?'
(I said to the Puppy as he went by).
'Up to the hills to roll and play.'
'I'll come with you, Puppy,' said I.
