Sometimes I risk a faltering step
To meet these -steins, both Ein- and Ep-:
But hesitate and halt at last,
Finding the works of each too vast
For such a finite brain as mine.
They gravel me, both Ep- and Ein-.
Ein-'s themes on space, Ep-'s things in stone
Both leave me gasping. Tho' I own
They're 'after something,' as men say,
What master minds, what years away,
Will fully grasp at last those fine
Profundities of Ep- and Ein-?
I sometimes like to think, if Ep-
Could be induced to take the step,
He might translate and bring in bounds
Vague theories that Ein- propounds
Carve them in stone, that, in the end
Mere fools like me might comprehend.
Working together thus they might
To a dull-witted world bring light.
But when each labors all alone,
Ep- at his monstrous things in stone.
Ein- with his talk of time-light-space
Just leave me with a wooden face.
Tho' here and now I own the twain
Bring but a bussing in my brain,
Yet I, like others of my kind,
Keen to be thought a 'modern' mind,

you are telling me about a stone

To Make Stone Sing
In fashioning Stone to give a song in every turning,
by giving flow to glass that is not molten,
placing a dancing step within a twist of steel,
bringing life and warmth to wood long dead,
seeing the story in a shape, where none intended
this, surely is the alchemy in your Art
By your hand and inner eye is the common
made to become uncommon, cherished, special.
Breathing sympathy into that which, by natures way,
is wrought from clay and holds no life nor feelings.
To balance shapes upon a pin within your mind
and be not breathless at the audacity in the thought.
To know the shape of time and space
To give bright image to a feeling.
To hold within your palm a sunset's touch,
and awaken within a dormant heart
the fires of something long forgotten.
To be a signpost to life's light and beauty.
To comprehend the colours of emotion
and mirror them in paint and weft.
So that on their reading, each heart
and eye, is given choice of understanding.
To bring forth from base elements
The golden touchstone of the future.
To give yourself into the singing stone
So that hand and heart and mind
are laid bare, for all to witness.
To have the courage and the charity
to open your palms and show the workings
of your soul.

The Statue
I take you looking at the statue
the smile is yours and the stone is you
the stone is simple and the smile is playful
the smile is stolen and the stone is fallen
I ask you to stand and smile like that until
thinking you stone, time has forgotten you.
They say but really I forget
however picturesque
however figurative
whether so often and so quizzical
whoever it was crying in another voice ...
Let us sit like tailors. At least 1 am sure of this:
man or woman or beast I recall no face.
The night is kind so please to bend your arm

for time it is now to step out of time

Questions Above
Many questions, seventy times seven, may be asked once in Heaven,
Our thoughts about the patriarchs, one or more questions this sparks,
Or maybe questions about this life, just why so much pain and strife?
Or the things we can't comprehend; may prompt questions in the end.
But with a pure mind and heart, many of those questions shall depart,
This when we enter into Eternal Life, now, with the pure mind of Christ,
Former things remembered no more, as we step on that eternal shore,
With an eternal mindset instead, as past is behind with Eternity ahead.
The things we could not comprehend, shall come to light at that bend,
The final turn at the end of our life, as we see the face of Jesus Christ,
With our glorified body and mind, those former things are well behind,
Many questions we may have asked, may be faded things of our past.
Most things from the former time, shall pale in the light of the sublime,
As the Crystal Sea and streets of gold, with our Lord our eyes behold,
Mindful now, of the things to come, as we enter, His Eternal Kingdom,
A Kingdom that shall not pass away, one, where we'll be there to stay,
Many things that we now ponder, may fade away as we get up yonder,
Earthly things will lose their allure, as we begin a new life for evermore,
Many questions now thought of, will likely fade in His presence above,
As Christ answers more than we ask, when we begin, that Eternal Task.
