Christopher Morley

The Intruder

AS I sat, to sift my dreaming
To the meet and needed word,
Came a merry Interruption
With insistence to be heard.

Smiling stood a maid beside me,
Half alluring and half shy;
Soft the white hint of her bosom-
Escapade was in her eye.

'I must not be so invaded,'
(IN anger then I cried)-
'Can't you see that I am busy?
Tempting creature, stay outside!

'Pearly rascal, I am writing:
I am now composing verse-
Fie on antic invitation:
Wanton, vanish-fly-disperse!

'Baggage, in my godlike moment
What have I to do with thee?'
And she laughed as she departed-
'I am Poetry,' said she.

Half Breed

My father married a Cherokee
My mother's people were ashamed of me
The Indian's said that I was white by law
The white man always called me Indian Squaw
Half breed
Is all I ever heard
Half breed
Let me hate the word
Half breed
She's no good they warned
Both sides were against me since the day I was born
We never settled went from town to town
When you're not welcome you don't hang around
The other children always laughed at me
Give her a feather she's a Cherokee
Half breed
Is all I ever heard
Half breed
Let me hate the word
Half breed
She's no good they warned
Both sides were against me since the day I was born
We weren't accepted and I felt the shame
Fifteen I left and tell me whose to blame
My life since then has been from man to man
But I can't run away from what I am

Half The World

Words by neil peart, music by geddy lee and alex lifeson
Half the world hates
What half the world does every day
Half the world waits
While half gets on with it anyway
Half the world lives
Half the world makes
Half the world gives
While the other half takes
Half the world is
Half the world was
Half the world thinks
While the other half does
Half the world talks
With half a mind on what they say
Half the world walks
With half a mind to run away
Half the world lies
Half the world learns
Half the world flies
As half the world turns
Half the world cries
Half the world laughs
Half the world tries
To be the other half
Half of us divided like a torn-up photograph half of us are
Trying to reach the other half
Half the world cares
While half the world is wasting the day
Half the world shares
While half the world is stealing away

Half The World

Half the world lives,
Half the world makes,
Half the world gives
While the other half takes.

Half the world hates,
Half the world runs away,
Half the world's late,
Half the world praises the day.

Half the world is,
Half the world was,
Half the world thinks,
Half the world does.

Half the world lies,
Half the world burns,
Half the world cries
While the other half turns.

Half the world cares,
Half the world weeps,
Half the world shares,
Half the world keeps.

Half the world sings,
Half the world laughs,
Half the world brings,
Half the world tries to be the other half.

End.

Chapter And Verse

I got the dictionary in my hand
But I can't seem to find the word I'm looking for
I've checked every letter, now I'm up to Z
There just ain't anymore
I've got a million choices in my head
If I could only chose the one that says it best
I shelled out a quarter for a greeting card
Now I can't seem to get my pen to do the rest
But I know it all by heart, chapter and verse
I'll quote you any part, every word
But it's so deep inside it can't be heard
I've got the Sunday paper in my hand
And I've been working on the weekly cryptogram
I know there's a message in between the lines
That's the same way I am
I got the crossword puzzle half complete
But now I need another word four letters long
It's just like the way I want a perfect fit
I can settle for less but all of them are wrong
There could be no jealousy over my poetry
It's my weakest quality, no vocabulary
I got the scrabble letters in a pile
But there could never be enough to say it all
I know you don't wanna hear the same old line
So you'll just have the read the writing on the wall

Love’s Likenings

He.
To what, love, shall I liken thee?
Thou, methinks, shalt firstly be
A blue flower with nodding bells
In the hollow of a tree.
When the wind blows wantonly,
Thou shalt ever shake thy head
At the idle tale he tells.
But at evening from the clover,
When the world is all abed,
And the noisy day is over,
And the birds have gone to rest,
In the darkness will I hover
Till thou bid me come to thee,
Till I creep into thy nest,
I thy long--expected lover,
I thy sweet, thy honey bee.
To what, love, shall I liken thee?
Tell me, love, what wouldst thou be?

She.
I would be a white cloud lying
In the bosom of the sky,
And at noon, when Earth is sighing
For the sun my fleeces hide,
I would bask in his bright eye,
Till he drew me up on high,
Till be took me for his bride.
Thou shalt be my sun to me.

Love, but I would be a well
In the sands of Araby,
So thyself wert a gazelle
Which must either drink or die.
Bend above me, love, and lo!
In my waters thou shalt spy
All that my heart cares to show,
Thy own face against the sky.

He.
To what more shall I liken thee?
Thou, my love, shalt lastly be
A clear silver--tonguèd brook
Running downwards to the Sea,
And the reeds shall seek to stay thee
Under every shaded nook,
And the pebbles shall waylay thee,
With their bald heads to dismay thee,
Till thy pretty face grows white,
Half in anger, half in fright.
See, thy troubles are forgot
In the still pool suddenly,
And a smile has found thee out,
Taking shape of thy delight,
Laughing, weeping, onward ever
Till thou join thyself to me,
For my love shall be the river.
Thou and I shall run together
Ever till we meet the Sea.

Stay '81

Verse:
Am I just dreaming or did you walk through my door?
Do you still feel the same way that you did before?
Did you come to bring me sorrow?
Like all those wasted days
Let's not think about tomorrow
You can stay
Am I just dreaming or did you say you have to go?
If you can't stay forever, I don't wanna know
There's no need to talk about it
The way things used to be
I'm not living here without you
(Chorus:)
Won't you stay, stay darlin'
You could stay, stay darlin'
Won't you stay, stay darlin'
You could stay, stay darlin'
You could stay, stay, stay darlin'
You could stay, stay, stay darlin'
(repeat)
No, no, can't let go
No, no, can't let go
No, no, can't let go
Am I just dreaming?
(verse)
You could stay, stay darlin'
You could stay, stay darlin'
Won't you stay, stay darlin'
You could stay, stay darlin'
(repeat)
You could stay, stay, stay darlin'
You could stay, stay, stay darlin'

Delivering Those Moments

You must of thought I was a fly by night poet.
Someone who regurgitated aches and pains.
And declared that in some poetic verse.
To flow a tear with anger to disperse.
Bursting with bitterness at the seams.

I like to speak my mind historically.
With a probing into the archives.
To undercover a falsity.
Or perhaps some truth that has been hidden.
Since much of that has been smothered in the past.

Sometimes I like to stir things up.
With innuendos like being black...
In a white coffee cup!
Or sipping tea with leeches who are corrupt.

You must of thought I was a fly by night poet.
Someone who regurgitated aches and pains.
And declared that in some poetic verse.
To flow a tear with anger to disperse.
Or scream from a passion singed in erotic heat!

I can do that if I wished.
But I am not feeling that at this moment.
It is too nice of a day...
To prove I can dazzle with my abilities!
However...
Please do not assume you hide desires,
Of your lust for being teased!
And I...
So enjoy,
Delivering those moments!

It Is A Habit

writing poems
when you really write poems
everyday and every moment of your life
even when you're in the middle of your
bread and butter eating thing
or even when you are defecating
writing poems becomes a habit
even when you sleep even when you dream
writing poems becomes a part of your system
you eat poetry you vomit poetry
you digest poetry you poo poetry
you breathe poetry you sweat poetry
you love poetry and you live with your poetry
and at the end you die with poetry

and your epitaph says: here lies the poet,
choked with poetry.

Dream

intro:
i'm dreaming, i'm dreaming
verse 1:
one week to another
leaving the love of my life
holding the hand of a stranger
why does this feel right
so i fall in love with someone i just met
still so very different from the men i've been with
so hard to get so close to
chorus 1:
but i'll dream, i'll drem about it
breakin'down these four walls
and entering his heart
so i'll dream, i'll dream about it
doing the impossible
and entering his heart, his heart
verse 2:
well i don't doubt this
more than willing to try
sacrifice things forever
but you feel it ain't right
so you've been hurt once
mybe been hurt twice
was it a woman
or were you pcked on thru life
given as much as i can give
chorus 2:
but i'll dream, i'll dream about it
breaking down these four walls
and entering his heart
so i'll dream, i'll dream about it
doing the impossible
and entering his heart
bridge:
i'm dreaming, i'm dreaming
i'm dreaming the impossible
and i'm dreaming, i'm dreaming
i'm dreaming to reality
i'm dreaming, i'm dreaming
i'm dreaming the impossible
and i'm dreaming, dreaming
verse 3:
i'm giving all of me
and in return you give me half
you say you got your problems
that you can't seem to sort out
seems to be so pointless that i stay
repeat chorus 2
final chorus:
but i'll dream
yes i'll dream about it
breaking down the walls
dream, yeah
entering his heart, his heart

Half A Mind

Sometimes I wish we had a short term memory just enough to recognize each others face
It would be the same old stories but youre hanging onto every single word I have to say
And to the world Im not that clever but you would stay with me forever
Id keep your friends from reminding, reminding you to
Save yourself, leave me behind you would if you had half a mind
Id tell you every days your birthday and every gift I bring could be the same
Or how I stood beside you at a shotgun wedding and the child we once would love but never came
Hearing stories that were never you would stay with me forever
But Id forget to make money and youd forget to
Save yourself, leave me behind you would if you had half a mind (how vulnerable you are)
Write a note to remind you you would if you had half a mind (how effortless to stay together)
For these ties you may have severed now youll stay with me forever
And so you write on your forehead, or better yet you engrave
So when you look in the mirror, well you wont forget to
Save yourself, leave me behind you would if you had half a mind (how vulnerable you are)
Write a note to remind you you would if you had half a mind (how effortless to stay together)
If we had no memory whatsoever we would stay right here forever

Ballad Of Langston Hughes

Great man of your time,
poet of verse and poet of rhyme
you let the white man know
how easy it is to let go
the built up resentment and woe
that's inflicted on skin darker than snow.

All you did was pick up the pen.
All you did over and again
was to relate to the entire world through word
all that needed to be heard.
Radical political action proposed in poetry
was an affront to the white man's psyche.

Your words were written for all to understand.
You words were written to take command
of the ones who heard them
spit out like phlegm.
But always your hope for equality
was written in your poetry.

Great seer and seeker your words still live,
live in the hearts of the forgotten ones
who still feel the frustrating horizons
that loom in the future.
And to those who've come a long way today
your challenge to them is to have their say.

The Little HandMaiden

The King's son walks in the garden fair-
Oh, the maiden's heart is merry!
He little knows for his toil and care,
That the bride is gone and the bower is bare.
Put on garments of white, my maidens!

The sun shines bright through the casement high-
Oh, the maiden's heart is merry!
The little handmaid, with a laughing eye,
Looks down on the king's son, strolling by.
Put on garments of white, my maidens!

'He little knows that the bride is gone,
And the Earl knows little as he;
She is fled with her lover afar last night
And the King's son is left to me.'

And back to her chamber with velvety step
The little handmaid did glide,
And a gold key took from her bosom sweet,
And opened the great chests wide.

She bound her hair with a band of blue,
And a garland of lilies sweet;
And put on her delicate silken shoes,
With roses at her feet.

She clad her body in spotless white,
With a girdle as red as blood.
The glad white raiment her beauty bound,
As the sepels blind the bud.

And round and round her white neck she flung
A necklace of sapphires blue;
On one white finger of either hand
A shining ring she drew.

And down the stairway and out of the door
She glided, as soft and light,
As an airy tuft of a thistle seed
Might glide through the grasses bright.

And into the garden sweet she stole-
The little birds carolled loud-
Her beauty shone as a star might shine
In the rift of the morning cloud.

The King's son walked in the garden fair,
And the little handmaiden came,
Through the midst of a shimmer of roses red,
Like a sunbeam through a flame.

The King's son marvelled, his heart leaped up,
'And art thou my bride?' said he,
'For, North or South, I have never beheld
A lovelier maid than thee.'

'And dost thou love me?' the little maid cried,
'A fine King's son, I wis!'
And the king's son took her with both his hands,
And her ruddy lips did kiss.

And the little maid laughed till the beaded tears,
Ran down in a silver rain.
'O foolish King's son!' and she clapped her hands,
Till the gold rings rang again.

'O King's son, foolish and fooled art thou,
For a goodly game is played:
Thy bride is away with her lover last night,
And I am her little handmaid.'

And the King's son sware a great oath, said he-
Oh, the maiden's heart is merry!
'If the Earl's fair daughter a traitress be,
The little handmaid is enough for me.'
Put on garments of white, my maidens!

The King's son walks in the garden fair-
Oh, the maiden's heart is merry!
And the little handmaiden walketh there,
But the old Earl pulleth his beard for care.
Put on garments of white, my maidens!

Commenting (Please Read)

This poem is dedicated to a very dear friend in Canada.
Melvina Germain.
The first person who left a heart prints on my work almost a year and a half ago. Mel, a million thanks from me.
Love and Hugs.
David xxxx

Some people read your work
and then pass on their way,
never leaving a comment
whether they liked it or not.
For any writer good or bad,
unless someone makes a comment on your work,
you feel left out in the cold.

For those who think that comments do not help,
let me tell you what comments have done for me.
For six or seven years I had given up writing,
I swore I would never lift my pen again.
Then in January 2007,
I posted a few old poems on a poetry site.
I was confused and lost at the time.
Never though for one moment
anyone would want to read my humble work.
I was wrong.
Through the comments I received,
I started writing again.

Since the 19th January 2007 to today the 14th June 2008
I have written 1132 poems, a 80,000 word novel,
collaborated on over 20 poems
with two young ladies half a world away from me
and published my first book of poetry.
For under a year and a half
that is not a bad record
and it happened through the encouragement in comments.

So the next time you read someone work
and there is a space for a comment,
leave one please.
Those little heart prints can change someone’s life
and encourage them on to do better things.
Your comment does not have to be lengthy,
just a word or two will do.
Remember it is good to help someone
and by leaving a comment,
that is just what you will do.
I always leave a comment on everything I read
knowing how others comments have helped me.

Same As Here

I got home from school one day
with a dark spot on my eye
Masiter Kumedzro always say:
fighting was against the rules
so when Grandma got home I told her a story
just like I'd rehearsed some hours before
and there I stood on my trembling knees
waiting for the worst
interestingly, she did not say a word

when she got into the kitchen she called
she said son 'Let me tell you a secret
about a Grandma's love”
a secret she said was just between us
she said, “Grandma’s don't just love their children
every now and then, it's a love without an end, amen'

when I became a father
there was no doubt my son was a stubborn boy
he was not like me but as just like my father's son
one day when I thought my patience
had been tested to the end too long
I took my Grandma's secret
and I passed it on to him
he hugged me and cried on my shoulders

last night I dreamed I'd died
and stood outside those pearly gates of Salem
suddenly, I realized, there must be some mistake
supposing St. Peter knows half the things I've done
he would never open the gate to let me in
there a deep voice spoke from the other side of the dome
and I heard those words again
it said, “Son Grandpa’s don't just love their children
every now and then, it's a love without an end, amen'

Godlike

So you're scrolling fast
down a page of
yeah yeah
those old Greek guys
did they spend their time
dreaming up quotes?

there goes
Democritus (460 - 370BC)
(though of course he didn't know
it was BC did he...?)
saying
'It is godlike
ever
to think
on something beautiful and
on something new.'

and just for a moment
your mind stops mid-scroll:
what was he wearing
that day, was it warm,
was he wearing the standard toga
in off-white or Persil white,
sandals I guess,
writing with some kinda
Greek reed-pen on some kinda
tablet thing
what he had mulled over, polished
fit for posterity
if there would be a posterity

or had he just had
this beautiful, new thought
come to him in his
beautiful, bright mind,
the sun shining on
the Acropolis up there,
the scent of herbs from
the sides of the hills,
still green and wooded,
feeling himself yes godlike
and maybe saying
a grateful thankyou
to the Muse
in Greek of course.

Rummage

Being real, true, peaceful
Showing you care
May cause others to think it...
Dare.
People Carrie baggage from their past.
Clogging up the sift'er
In a new relationship.
An 'all-in' sharing is at hand
On an honest tip
You can be real and hip.
If one hole in the sift'er
Is clog
The new relationship
Headed for the fog
Your baggage may cause
Hearing problems...or
Second guesting
Beware of that.
'No holds barred'
In earnest of a new relationship
Sure there maybe some...
Swelling of the past
But remember it was that,
That wasn't honest,
That did not last.
So lose the baggage
Free your hind part
An 'all-in' sharing must be
One objective.
You can do it...
And still be be protective.
P.S. you lose more by
Being honest and that
Which is left...
IS for you.
