Antonio Machado

Has My Heart Gone To Sleep?

Has my heart gone to sleep?
Have the beehives of my dreams
stopped working, the waterwheel
of the mind run dry,
scoops turning empty,
only shadow inside?

No, my heart is not asleep.
It is awake, wide awake.
Not asleep, not dreaming—
its eyes are opened wide
watching distant signals, listening
on the rim of vast silence.

Sleep

He is aways asleep
walking chatting working playing
though wide awake
He does not miss a train
and you cannot outwit him
in conversation or at playground

But believe it or not
he is always asleep
He has two minds one asleep
and the other awake
Or else the wide awake mind is the
isle of Langerhans
in the midst of the mind.awake

The mind asleep is
connected along hot line
with the pituitary gland
which is the point
whence the expanding universe
shot forth with a big bang

Im Awake Now

Ive been where the river ran
Im drownin in a sunless sea
Sleep has helped me find my end
You promised me youd set me free
Dont fall asleep to dream
A banshees at my window pane
Theres an angel at my feet
Dont fall asleep to dream
Im awake now
(you cant touch me, I wont sleep no more)
Awake now
In the corner of my mind
Where he sits and waits for me
Theres a wall of confusion building
And the sky begins to bleed on me
Dont fall asleep to dream
Im looking for a way out now
Peace of mind is all I need
Dont fall asleep to dream
Im awake now
(you cant touch me, I wont sleep no more)
Awake now
(you cant touch me, I wont sleep no more)
Awake now
(you cant touch me, I wont sleep no more)
Awake now
Awake now
Awake now
Awake now
Awake now

Hypnos

In my sleep, my somber sleep,
My eyes opened wide my somber sleep,
Aside Lord Hypnos, god of silent sleep,
Alone in a cave where no sun shines,
In an alias, along with Zeus alongside the divine,
Forever asleep surround by poppies and hypnogogic plants.
Under the spell of Thánatos, and never wishing grants,
In my sleep, my somber sleep,
Around me Morpheous creeps,
To cast away sounds and never awake from sleep,
I dream under the dark skies of Nyx through the night,
In my dream I percieve Morpheous, Phobetor, and Phantasos as kings,
In my dreams escape and salvation is what they bring!
Through this cave flowed the river of Lethe,
The river of forgetfulness, the river in my mind I see,
My eyes opened wide I stare at the beauty of Salene,
Daughter of titans Hyperion and Theia beautiful is she,
In my somber sleep, Salene casts over me the moon,
Also the goddess of the moon, I fall asleep too soon,
Lord Hypnos god of silent sleep,
Keep me asleep and cast away the grief!
Keep me away from the sun that Helios brings,
Keep me asleep where poppies and hypnogogic plants sings!
Close the black curtains around me, let me sleep,
Let me swim in thoughts of epiphany, in the river of Lethe,
With Endymion forever I sleep under the moon of the lunar diety,
Forever asleep with Mythological Gods of different variety,
Lord Hypnos, forever keep my asleep,
Never more I was my hands in Lethe while I weep.

Id Kill To Fall Asleep

Eyes open, I'm wide awake
I feel I'm in a coma state
I'll lay here on my back and watch the fan turn
Conversations cross my mind, but nothing of the speaking kind
TV images repeat there one lines
Back and forth I toss and turn
It feels like strings are holding up my eyes
I'd kill to fall asleep
I'd kill to fall asleep
Putting up a losing fight
I'll never see this end tonight
The thought of just one dream it consumes me
Numbers on the clock turn back, my pills are having no affect
The beating of my heart keeps the time going
Back and forth I toss and turn
It feels like strings are holding up my eyes
I'd kill to fall asleep
I'd kill to fall asleep
They say that when you sleep your body's at rest
I wouldn't know what sleep felt like if I tried my best
Polaroids and memories can fade away, so can I...
Back and forth I toss and turn
It feels like strings are holding up my eyes
I'd kill to fall asleep
I'd kill to fall asleep
I'd kill to fall asleep
I'd kill to fall asleep
I'd kill....

I Cant Sleep

(kathy louvin/mark collie)
I cant sleep
For dreaming about you
When youre gone
Theres nothing I can do
But lie awake alone
And dream the whole night through
I cant sleep
For dreaming about you
I close my weary eyes
And see your face
I hold my pillow tight
And dream of your embrace
I know that I could use the rest
But my lonely heart cries out for your caress
I cant sleep
For dreaming about you
When youre gone
Theres nothing I can do
But lie awake alone
And dream the whole night through
I cant sleep
For dreaming about you
They say that absence makes a love grow stronger
But I dont believe my empty arms can hold out any longer
I cant sleep
For dreaming about you
When youre gone
Theres nothing I can do
But lie awake alone
And dream the whole night through
I cant sleep
For dreaming about you
I cant sleep
For dreaming about you

Asleep?

Are you asleep or feigning it?
I should be able to tell.
But your quiet even breathing
has fooled me oh so well.

I cannot see behind your eyes
and what it is that's there.
You look so peaceful next to me
as if you have no care.

Are you content in our bed
or restless in your mind?
Do I need to worry at all
that someday I will find

that behind your dreamy appearance
you lie there wide-awake?
I'm afraid to touch you now.
I fear your sleep is fake.

And if you're troubled in our bed
what is it I must do?
Please let it be peaceful slumber
that has come to you.

Am I asleep or feigning it?
I do not wish to tell.
For without you lying next to me
this bed's a living hell.

Eyes Wide Open

Here it comes, here comes another day
Another decision on the way
Well here it comes, here comes a covered display
of preferences to make
Well here it comes, here comes a knock on the door
Open it for an opportunity
Well here it comes, here comes another day
for memories to be made
Eyes wide open
Eyes wide open all the time
'n there it was, it was a perfect take
and were you asleep or awake
There it was, it was a perfect time
to speak your mind
'n there it was, it was a chance of a lifetime
It flew right by and what did you do?
Well there it was, it was another day
for memories to be made
Eyes wide open
Eyes wide open all the time
I've got my eyes wide open
Eyes wide open all the time
Because you never know
what you might see...

I lost My Sleep

I lost my sleep to the clouds bulging with rain,
or to the bright sun again,
enacting in a complicated act,
browsing over blissful facts,

I'm hiding this crooked alarm,
as little sleep will do no harm,
I badly need some sleep,
but my eyes are wide awake in memories deep,

should I laugh or should I weep,
or just wait till my eyes are asleep,
so many emotions fused,
extra-caffeine consumed
Dreams without sleep,
oh! what a hectic week! ! !

Awake, My Heart

Awake, my heart, to be loved, awake, awake!

The darkness silvers away, the morn doth break,
It leaps in the sky: unrisen lustres slake
The o'ertaken moon. Awake, O heart, awake!

She too that loveth awaketh and hopes for thee:
Her eyes already have sped the shades that flee,
Already they watch the path thy feet shall take:
Awake, O heart, to be loved, awake, awake!

And if thou tarry from her, - if this could be, -
She cometh herself, O heart, to be loved, to thee;
For thee would unashamed herself forsake:
Awake, to be loved, my heart, awake, awake!

Awake! The land is scattered with light, and see,
Uncanopied sleep is flying from field and tree;
And blossoming boughs of April in laughter shake:
Awake, O heart, to be loved, awake, awake!

Lo, all things wake and tarry and look for thee:
She looketh and saith, "O sun, now bring him to me.
Come, more adored, O adored, for his coming's sake,
And awake, my heart, to be loved, awake, awake!"

Insomnia

Everyone is asleep
silence all around, not a peep,
Yet here i sit wide awake
can't sleep again even though its late,
Sleep evades me all the time
that why I'm up writing this rhyme.
Wanting a sleep so deep and natural
but its floating away down stream, like a Spanish mackerel,
really who knows how long I'll be up
maybe out to the kitchen for a warm tea cup
Now what else is there to say,
But looks like this could be a long day.

~Insomnia~

No sight
Insomnia
I dream
I'm awake
I sleep
Mingle between both
Insomnia
Blurry
Fuzzy
Awake all night
I'm not alone
Insomnia
No sleep
I'm tired
Dusk is death
Dawn is suicide
Insomnia
Less sleep
I'm awake more
Time slips
Lake of sleep
Insomnia
Rain of dreams
Lucid yet unclear
I reach
Grasp nothing
Insomnia
Awake
Asleep
Both
Same time
Insomnia

Maria's Lullaby

An extract from a poem written for my grandchildren to Brahms Lullaby

Sleep; little mice sleep
Mother will watch over you
Shut your eyes and don't peek
Tomorrow the skies will be blue
Sleep; little mice sleep.

Sleep; little mice sleep
No harm will come whilst I am here
The sun has gone down by the peak
When the day dawns it will appear
Sleep; little mice sleep.

Sleep; little mice sleep
Your father is watching the house
That no owl or cat dares to seek
Harm to creatures or mouse
Sleep; little mice sleep.

Sleep; little mice sleep
Tomorrow you run and play
Now is not time to speak
When you awake a new day
Sleep; little mice sleep.

Sleep; little mice sleep
Rest now for your own sake
Shut your eyes now be asleep
I will be here when you awake
Sleep; little mice sleep.

Sleep To Rejuvenate lIfe!

Unconscious state of being is sleep;
Sleep refreshes mind, heart and soul.
While awake our activities are known
And while asleep no activity is known!

Dreams are common in sleep for all;
It fulfils the heart not possible otherwise!
First all starts as dreams and ends in action;
So, dream is consolation and inspiration!

Coming back to senses seems to be a magic!
If it does not take place one is concluded as dead!
In activities and sleep man's life goes on here;
But without good sleep no activity is bright!

Work while you work, play while play and also
Sleep while you sleep to rejuvenate your life!

River Shannon

Oh Shannon
I might be dreaming'
The stars fell down on the factory
The cathedrals repeating, the light receding
Bells on another day
Have you ever seen my face
Fast asleep and dreaming'?
Oh Shannon
The lightning' fell
There's an army down by the riverside
But I might be dreaming'
I can see that you don't believe me
And I might be dreaming'
If I dip into your water
Fall through my reflection
I will shadow myself anyway
Have you ever seen my face
Fast asleep and dreaming'?
And it don't seem right
That I don't get no sleep at night
What's the river gonna know about leaving'?
Oh Shannon
The soldiers are coming'
The guns are drumming' the night away
Rain, rain go away
Come again some other day
When I got time for believing'
Have you ever seen my face
Fast asleep and dreaming'?
Yeah! What is there left to believe in?!
Oh Shannon
I might be dreaming'
I might be wasting' my life away
listening' to you
Down on under the streetlight
You shudder and beat
The edge of the waterway
And I know if I had time
I might dive in your water
Lie right down in the evening rain
I just want this pain, pain to go away
Come again some other day
When I got time for bleeding'
Have you ever seen my face
Fast asleep and dreaming'?
And it don't seem right that I don't get no sleep at night
What's the river gonna know about leaving'?
Oh Shannon
I might be dreaming

I Scold Myself

Whilst I'm asleep I have no control
and I awake in anxious sweats.
I scold myself in my thoughts,
which causing me nothing but stress.

I don't know why I punish myself,
in reality I've done nothing wrong.
This only happens when I'm asleep,
but it does happen all night long.

It's not as though my mind is troubled,
and my conscience is entirely free.
It's got so that I hate retiring for the night
because I know what waits for me.

I cannot blank out my unconscious thoughts,
they're like nightmares that won't go away.
I desperately need a good night's sleep
so I can stay awake throughout the day.

The Night Is A Good Listener

The night is a good listener
How I wonder how huge its ears are,
How deep its patience in the silence
Of an ocean floor, how wide its embrace,
Like a cool thick forest, like a coiling river,
As though time does not even exist,

The night is listening to me
Intently, like I were her only son,
Because the rest of her servants and mistresses
Are all asleep,
She is so silent, in tiptoes, in a hush,
This night, I can hear how the ants crawl for crumbs,
How the lizards run and play & catch its prey on the ceiling,
How the prey on the other hand, struggles to escape,
How the air gushes on the window pane,
How the whispers of my heart sound like
Some dews dropping on some soft green blades of grass,
Indeed night is so patient, so ever silent,
Though sleepy, it gazes in me, trying to
Understand what all these silent conversation is all about,
The night understands, lip-reading my thoughts,
Listening intently, the night sits, and
Now, signals for an embrace, with arms and heart wide open
Some of her tears are starting to fall.
