Kaiser and Co. Or Hoch der Kaiser

[Being Wilhelm der Grosser's estimate of himself and partner, translated from the original Hoch-deutsch.]

Der Kaiser auf der Vaterland
Und Gott on high all dings gommand,
Ve two! Ach! don'd you understandt?
Meinself -- und Gott.

He reigns in Heafen, und always shall,
Und mein own Embire don'd vas small;
Ein noble bair, I dink you call
Meinself -- und Gott.

While some men sing der power divine,
Mein soldiers sing der "Wacht am Rhein,"
Und drink der healt in Rhenish wein,
Auf me -- und Gott.

Dere's France dot swaggers all aroundt,
She ausgespieldt -- she's no aggoundt,
To mooch ve dinks she don't amoundt:
Meinself -- und Gott.

She vill not dare to fight again,
But if she should, I'll show her blain
Dot Elsass und (in French) Lorraine
Are Mein -- und Gott's.

Von Bismarck was a man auf might,
Und dought he vas glean oud auf sight,
But ach! he vas nicht goot to fight
Mit me -- und Gott.

Ve knock him like ein man auf sdraw,
Ve let him know whose vill vas law,
Und dot ve don'd vould sdandt his jaw,
Meinself -- und Got.

Ve send him oudt in big disgrace,
Ve gif him insuldt to his face,
Und put Caprivi in his place,
Meinself -- und Gott.

Und ven Caprivi get svelled headt,
Ve very brombtly on him set,
Und toldt him to get vp and get --
Meinself -- und Gott.

Dere's Grandma dinks she's nicht shmall beer,
Mit Boers und dings she interfere;
She'll learn none runs dis hemisphere
But Me -- und Gott.

She dinks, goot frau, some ships she's got,
Und soldiers mit der sgarlet coat,
Ach! ve could knock dem -- pouf! like dot,
Meinself -- und Gott.

Dey say dat badly fooled I vas
At Betersburg by Nicholas,
Und dat I act shust like ein ass
Und dupe, Herr Gott.

Vell, maybe yah und maybe nein,
Und maybe Czar mit France gombine
To take dem lands about der Rhein
From me -- und Gott.

But dey may try dot leedle game,
Und make der breaks; but all der same,
Dey only vill increase der fame
Auf me -- und Gott.

In dimes auf beace, brebared for wars
I bear der helm and sbear auf Mars,
Und care nicht for ten dousand Czars,
Meinself -- und Gott.

In short, I humour efery whim,
Mit aspect dark and visage grim,
Gott pulls mit me und I mit Him --
Meinself -- und Gott.

Engel

Wohl auch die Nachtigall;
Das war wohl süßer Schall,
Da wir zusammen waren.

Ich sing und kann nicht weinen
Und spinne so allein
Den Faden klar und rein,
Solang der Mond wird scheinen.

Da wir zusammen waren,
Da sang die Nachtigall;
Nun mahnet mich ihr Schall,
Daß du von mir gefahren.

So oft der Mond mag scheinen,
Gedenk ich dein allein;
Mein Herz ist klar und rein,
Gott wolle uns vereinen!

Seit du von mir gefahren,
Singt stets die Nachtigall;
Ich denk bei ihrem Schall,
Wie wir zusammen waren.

Gott wolle uns vereinen,
Hier spinn ich so allein;
Der Mond scheint klar und rein,
Ich sing und möchte weinen!

Mundzumundbeatmung

Zeig mir die frau, oh
Gott, wie sie tanzt
Zeig mir die frau
Koerper voll in trance
Wie sie tanzt!
Sie tanzt auf den tischen
Fegt bestecke weg
Greift sich den staerksten
Nimmt auch den buckel mit
Glitzert abends auf der pier
Erloest den jungen
Dann das tier
Und das tier
Brennen, brennen
Will brennen: zuend mich an!
Zeig mir die frau, oh
Gott, wie sie tanzt
Zeig mir die frau
Koerper voll in trance
Wie sie tanzt!
Du hast mich verzaubert
Will in deine seele sehn
Die eine will kommen
Die andre seele will schnell gehn
Frag mich, wer ihr schweigen bricht -
Kannst du ihre sprache nicht
Verstehn?
Verstehn?
Unten am meer
Liegt ein koerper Im sand
Die frau sitzt da
Seinen kopf in der hand
Die haut vibriert, ihr atem macht wund
Sie blaest heiss
Sie blaest stark in den toten mund
Brennen, brennen
Will brennen: zuend mich an

Vatten blev vin ovh fiender vnner
Mmm, det var hrlight att leva
Allting var fritt s vem skulle sakna
Ngonting d? Nej, paradis, nakna

Dot Leedle Boy

Ot's a leedle Gristmas story
Dot I told der leedle folks--
Und I vant you stop dot laughin'
Und grackin' funny jokes!--
So help me Peter-Moses!
Ot's no time for monkey-shine,
Ober I vast told you somedings
Of dot leedle boy of mine!

Ot vas von cold Vinter vedder,
Ven der snow vas all about--
Dot you have to chop der hatchet
Eef you got der sauerkraut!
Und der cheekens on der hind leg
Vas standin' in der shine
Der sun shmile out dot morning
On dot leedle boy of mine.

He vas yoost a leedle baby
Not bigger as a doll
Dot time I got acquaintet--
Ach! you ought to heard 'im squall!--
I grackys! dot's der moosic
Ot make me feel so fine
Ven first I vas been marriet--
Oh, dot leedle boy of mine!

He look yoost like his fader!--
So, ven der vimmen said,
'Vot a purty leedle baby!'
Katrina shake der head. . . .
I dink she must 'a' notice
Dot der baby vas a-gryin',
Und she cover up der blankets
Of dot leedle boy of mine.

Vel, ven he vas got bigger,
Dot he grawl und bump his nose,
Und make der table over,
Und molasses on his glothes--
Dot make 'im all der sveeter,--
So I say to my Katrine,
'Better you vas quit a-shpankin'
Dot leedle boy of mine!'

No more he vas older
As about a dozen months
He speak der English language
Und der German--bote at vonce!
Und he dringk his glass of lager
Like a Londsman fon der Rhine--
Und I klingk my glass togeder
Mit dot leedle boy of mine!

I vish you could 'a' seen id--
Ven he glimb up on der chair
Und shmash der lookin'-glasses
Ven he try to comb his hair
Mit a hammer!--Und Katrina
Say, 'Dot's an ugly sign!'
But I laugh und vink my fingers
At dot leedle boy of mine.

But vonce, dot Vinter morning,
He shlip out in der snow
Mitout no stockin's on 'im.--
He say he 'vant to go
Und fly some mit der birdies!'
Und ve give 'im medi-cine
Ven he catch der 'parrygoric'--
Dot leedle boy of mine!

Und so I set und nurse 'im,
Vile der Gristmas vas come roun',
Und I told 'im 'bout 'Kriss Kringle,'
How he come der chimbly down:
Und I ask 'im eef he love 'im
Eef he bring 'im someding fine?
'Nicht besser as mein fader,'
Say dot leedle boy of mine.--

Und he put his arms aroun' me
Und hug so close und tight,
I hear der gclock a-tickin'
All der balance of der night! . . .
Someding make me feel so funny
Ven I say to my Katrine,
'Let us go und fill der stockin's
Of dot leedle boy of mine.'

Vell.--Ve buyed a leedle horses
Dot you pull 'im mit a shtring,
Und a leedle fancy jay-bird--
Eef you vant to hear 'im sing
You took 'im by der topknot
Und yoost blow in behine--
Und dot make much spectakel
For dot leedle boy of mine!

Und gandies, nuts und raizens--
Und I buy a leedle drum
Dot I vant to hear 'im rattle
Ven der Gristmas morning come!
Und a leedle shmall tin rooster
Dot vould crow so loud und fine
Ven he sqveeze 'im in der morning,
Dot leedle boy of mine!

Und--vile ve vas a-fixin'--
Dot leedle boy vake out!
I t'ought he been a-dreamin'
'Kriss Kringle' vas about,--
For he say--'DOT'S HIM!--I SEE 'IM
MIT DER SHTARS DOT MAKE DER SHINE!'
Und he yoost keep on a-gryin'--
Dot leedle boy of mine,--
Und gottin' vorse und vorser--
Und tumble on der bed!
So--ven der doctor seen id,
He kindo' shake his head,
Und feel his pulse--und visper,
'Der boy is a-dyin'.'
You dink I could BELIEVE id?--
DOT LEEDLE BOY OF MINE?

I told you, friends--dot's someding,
Der last time dot he speak
Und say, 'GOOT-BY, KRISS KRINGLE!'
--Dot make me feel so veak
I yoost kneel down und drimble,
Und bur-sed out a-gryin',
'MEIN GOTT, MEIN GOTT IN HIMMEL!--
DOT LEEDLE BOY OF MINE!'
. . . . . . . . . .

Der sun don't shine DOT Gristmas!
. . . Eef dot leedle boy vould LIFF'D--
No deefer-en'! for HEAVEN vas
His leedle Gristmas gift!
Und der ROOSTER, und der GANDY,
Und me--und my Katrine--
Und der jay-bird--is awaiting
For dot leedle boy of mine.

Wilder Wein

Wilder Wein-vor deinem Schloss
Wilder Wein-ich bin bereit
man meldet Ankunft-nur fuer den Koenig
Gott steh mir bei-und oeffne deine Tore
Wilder Wein-und ganz langsam
Wilder Wein-so warm und feucht

Wilder Wein-vor deinem Schloss
Wilder Wein-es steht geschrieben
tief im Wasser-kreuzt man nicht
doch mein Lust-verlacht die Fluegel
Wilder Wein-wie eineTaube
Wilder Wein-so nass und heiss

Wilder Wein-vor diesem Dunkel
Wilder Wein-von Licht geheilt
es bleibt verborgen-sonst koennten wir uns wehren
ich warte auf dich-am Ende der Nacht
Wilder Wein-nur eine Traube
Wilder Wein-und bitter wie Schnee

ich warte auf dich-am Ende der Nacht
ich warte auf dich-am Ende der Nacht
ich warte auf dich-am Ende der Nacht
ich warte auf dich-am Ende der Nacht

Unser Gott

They held a great prayer-service in Berlin,
And augured German triumph from some words
Said to be spoken by the Jewish God
To Gideon, which signified that He
Was staunchly partial to the Israelites.
The aisles were thronged; and in the royal box
(I had it from a tourist who was there,
Clutching her passport, anxious, like the rest),
There sat the Kaiser, looking 'very sad.'
And then they sang; she said it shook the heart.
The women sobbed; tears salted bearded lips
Unheeded; and my friend looked back and saw
A young girl crumple in her mother's arms.
They carried out a score of them, she said,
While German hearts, through bursting German throats
Poured out, Ein Feste Burg Ist Unser Gott!

(Yea, 'Unser Gott! Our strength is Unser Gott!
Not that light-minded Bon Dieu of France!')

I think we all have made our God too small.
There was a young man, a good while ago,
Who taught that doctrine... but they murdered him
Because he wished to share the Jewish God
With other folk.
They are long-lived, these fierce
Old hating Gods of nations; but at last
There surely will be spilled enough of blood
To drown them all! The deeps of sea and air,
Of old the seat of gods, no more are safe,
For mines and monoplanes. The Germans, now,
Can surely find and rout the God of France
With Zeppelins, or some slim mother's son
Of Paris, or of Tours, or Brittany,
Can drop a bomb into the Feste Burg,
And, having crushed the source of German strength,
Die happy in his blazing monoplane.

Sad jesting! If there be no God at all,
Save in the heart of man, why, even so --
Yea, all the more, -- since we must make our God,
Oh, let us make Him large enough for all,
Or cease to prate of Him! If kings must fight,
Let them fight for their glory, openly,
And plain men for their lands and for their homes,
And heady youths, who go to see the fun,
Blaspheme not God. True, maybe we might leave
The God of Germany to some poor frau
Who cannot go, who can but wait and mourn,
Except that she will teach Him to her sons --
A God quite scornful of the Slavic soul,
And much concerned to keep Alsace-Lorraine.
They should go godless, too -- the poor, benumbed
Crushed, anguished women, till their hearts can hold
A greater Comforter!

(Yet it is hard
To make Him big enough! For me, I like
The English and the Germans and the French,
The Russians, too; and Servians, I should think,
Might well be very interesting to God.
But, do the best I may, my God is white,
And hardly takes a nigger seriously
This side of Africa. Not those, at least
Who steal my wood, and of a summer night
Keep me awake with shouting, where they sit
With monkey-like fidelity and glee
Grinding through their well-oiled sausage-mill --
The dead machinery of the white man's church --
Raw jungle-fervor, mixed with scraps sucked dry
Of Israel's old sublimities: not those.
And when they threaten us, the Higher Race,
Think you, which side is God's? Oh, let us pray
Lest blood yet spurt to wash that black skin white,
As now it flows because a German hates
A Cossack, and an Austrian a Serb!)
What was it that he said so long ago,
The young man who outgrew the Jewish God --
'Not a sparrow falleth --?' Ah, God, God,
And there shall fall a million murdered men!

Goethe In Dormition II

Sing a good man, bear a fool
where needed, living well-
it doesn't matter what:
soul-transforming work that gets us bread;
and till your garden
number trees
seperate them, leaf and stem
analyze a stone
tracing back a form
to the mind of-Gott,
you can even love a worm
that with the sunshine and the rain
into your heart
may sink God's renewing pardon;
your senses-cultivate them
pour wine into your crop
until you nearly drop
place Beauty in your bed
but above all, all,
put Poetry in your head
and by its....

A Private Eye Bajadere

Monday morning, washing day, clothes, linen,
towels, sneakers, socks of course - before I start
I need a shot of dreams, a fantasy to carry me
through a mundane job of cleaning things

I could be an old-fashioned galley slave working
away on a ship crossing the Caribbean, or I could
be a fairy banished from fairyland forced to toil
a human life in order to earn fairy Brownie points

Or I could be a Private Eye posing as a household
drudge in order to fool all the street thugs while I’m
watching their every move, sending information
to my spy friends through secret signs

Suddenly, while I’m still sending signs pretending
I’m washing windows, someone grabbed me from
behind, I screamed, Rudi laughed; enquired about
my funny game, I told him my Private Eye fantasy

He became a rich Mafia boss seducing this Private
Eye to tap her brain, then fell in love and took her
for himself, mmm, Rudi understands my games
so well, next I’ll be his Bajadere

He’ll get to be the god Siva just as he is for me,
tomorrow I’ll immolate myself upon his pyre and
ascend to heaven in his arms...

(When our lecturer asked me what is a Bajadere,
I answered modestly Ein Dienstmädchen, he
smiled paternally and said we’d leave it at that)

‘Der Gott und die Bajadere’, a ballad with the sub-title ‘Indische Legende’ written by J. W. Goethe in June 1797, and published in the Musenalmanach for 1798. It is the story of an Indian prostitute who is visited by the god Siva, unrecognized in human form, and is seized with true love for him. The human shape is found lifeless in the morning, and the Bajadere immolates herself upon its pyre. She ascends to heaven in the arms of the god.

Weies Fleisch

Dein weies Fleisch erregt mich so
ich bin doch nur ein Gigolo
dein weies Fleisch erleuchtet mich
Mein schwarzes Blut und dein weies Fleisch
ich werd immer geiler von deinem Gekreisch
der Angstschwei da auf deiner weien Stirn

Dein weies Fleisch erregt mich so

Yah - Vibration

mir wirklich fad
am Golfplatz Schneesturm, alle Caddies
Hackenstad (unemployed)
es wird immer klter, ice is in the air
Sommer her
schuf
Oh, oh, Jamaica makes her feel so high
Oh, Jamaica makes her come alive
Jamaica-Vibration
Positive-Vibration
Rastaman-Vibration
was der Rastermann nicht alles kann
Als erstes suche ich nach einem adquaten
Platz
die Schnste sucht einstweilen nach geeignetem
Ersatz
hole in one
oh, oh Jamaica makes her feel so high
oh, oh Jamaica makes her come alive
Jamaica-Vibration
Positive-Vibration
Rastaman-Vibration
was der Rastamann nicht alles kann
Interlude
Hey, man, wanna buy some stuff man?
Did you ever toast that thing, man?
So toast it to the beat!
Jamaica-Vibration
Positive-Vibration

was der Rastamann nicht alles kann

Das Bleibende

Solang noch der Tatrawind leicht
slowakische Blumen bestreicht,
so lang wirken Mädchen sie ein
in trauliche Buntstickerei'n.
Solang noch im bayrischen Wald
die Axt im Morgengraun hallt,
so lang auch der Einsame sitzt,
der Gott und die Heiligen schnitzt.
Solang auf ligurischer Fahrt
das Meer seine Fischer gewahrt,
so lang wird am Strand es schaun
die spitzenklöppelnden Fraun.
Ihr Völker der Erde, mich rührt
das Bleibende, das ihr vollführt.
Ich selbst, ohne Volk, ohne Land,
stütz' nun meine Stirn in die Hand.

O Mutter, halte dein Kindlein warm,

O Mutter, halte dein Kindlein warm,
Die Welt ist kalt und helle,
Und trag es fromm in deinem Arm
An deines Herzens Schwelle.

Leg still es, wo dein Busen bebt,
So weck ich dich mit Küssen;
Aus deinem Aug mein Tag anbricht,
Sonn, Mond dir weichen müssen,

O du unschuldger Himmel du!
Du lachst aus Kindesblicken,
O Engelsehen, o selge Ruh,

Komm her, komm her, trink meine Brust,
Leben von meinem Leben;

Ach, du trinkst auch die Schmerzen;
So stärke Gott in Himmelshöh
Dich Herz aus meinem Herzen!

Vater unser, der du im Himmel bist,
Unser täglich Brot gib uns heute,
Getreuer Gott, Herr Jesus Christ,
Tränk uns aus deiner Seite.-Du strahlender Augenhimmel du,
Du taust aus Mutteraugen,
Ach Herzenspochen, ach Lust, ach Ruh,
An deinen Brüsten saugen!

Muß ewig zu dir schauen;

Gewohnt dir unterm Herzen;
Da waren die Freuden, die Leiden dein
Mir Freuden auch und Schmerzen.

Und ward dir dein Herz ja allzu groß,
Und hattest nicht, wem klagen,
Und weintest du still in deinen Schoß,
Half ich dein Herz dir tragen.

Da rief ich: Komm, lieb Mutter, komm!
Kühl dich in Liebeswogen!
Da fühltest du dich so still, so fromm
In dich hinabgezogen.

So mutterselig ganz allein
In deiner Lust berauschet,
Hab ich die klare Seele dein,
Du reines Herz, belauschet.

Was heilig in dir zu aller Stund,
Das bin ich all gewesen;
Nun küß mich, süßer Mund, gesund,
Weil du an mir genesen.

O selig, selig ohne Schuld,
Wie konnt ich mit dir beten;
O wunderbare Ungeduld,
Ans scharfe Licht zu treten!

O Mutter, halte dein Kindlein warm,

Und will in Freuden brechen.

Brichts nicht in Freud, brichts doch in Leid,
Bricht es uns allen beiden.
Ach, Wiedersehen geht fern und weit,
Und nahe geht das Scheiden!

Tarfur

Eg mun vaka yfir ter
Lifa ut I horn
Hvort sem stendur eda felur mun eg gera tad sem tarf
Komast I hvarf, vopna tig, beygja mig, vikja tig, leyna mig
Finna minn stad, leida tennan tarf
Hvad eigum vid ad gera, efla tru and annan sid
Hvert einasta, seinasta rennur I lengra bil, svolitid mig
Sama er mer, hvort sem er
Hvort sem tad er eg eda tu sem fornar life, hver fer, bintu hnut
Skilur ad, skilurdu tad, tad skilur ad, allt annar madur, betri en I gaer, eg
vildi helst geta daelt ut ur mer? Elskad og saert, truir tu mer tykir tar gott
Finnst ter tad gott
Snuid tvi sem snyr ad mer, fundid mig her og vakad yfir ter
Svona sefur tu saett
megin sama sinnis
Rauda spjaldid gefid upp
Sama og to ad eg sa ad fara utaf, koma aftur upp
Guli kenni skoga, mina fjarlaegd, fjarskipti nalagt
Taktu numer, einn, tveir og trir
Hvad vil eg frekar tig
Til ad marka sognina, yfir um tognina
Talandi tungulaust, sjaanlegur, heyri roddina
Svona sefurdu saett
Mun eg vaka yfir ter?

On Ye Plott Against King William

Rome when she could King Pyrrhus Life have bought
She scornd a triumph So ignobly gott,
The treason & ye traitor both disdaind,
& ever Justly conquerd ever Justly reignd.
But (Like an Affrick) England serpents bears
Which would their parent country's bowels teare,
Our better Genius tumble Headlong down,
& sett our evil one upon ye throne.
The Titans wickedness nere reacht so high,
They fought but for ye empire of ye sky,
When Jove unjustly held the soveraignity.
That Godlike soul which doth inform our state
Gerion-like, ye'de conquer by deceit.
Ye in one stroke would make three kingdomes bleed,
& Leave our Iles as nile without a head.
Cease fooles with Hellish plotts to wrack your brain,
Ye Cannot wound a God, ye strive in vain;
Ixions fate again is acted here,
He for a Deity imbrac't, ye wounded, air.

Cmon Cmon Cmon

Cmon cmon cmon - were gonna make it home tonight
Cmon cmon cmon - everythings gonna be alright
The nite is alive - the world is asleep
Dreaming of promises they cant keep
We gotta be tough we gott a be strong
Its only love weve been waiting on
Cmon cmon cmon - were gonna make it home tonight
Cmon cmon cmon - everythings gonna be alright
Its only a dream - its all in your head
Its only some words somebody said
We can believe what we wanna believe
And you can believe in me
Cmon cmon cmon - were gonna make it home tonight
Cmon cmon cmon - everythings gonna be alright
Cmon cmon cmon - were gonna make it home tonight
Cmon cmon cmon - everythings gonna be alright
