There's a guy at the record company who's 30, and he says, I would not listen to these songs except in this context. Somehow the recording process, the arrangements, make it more accessible.

I've never had a relationship with a record executive. I always went to the record company by someone that liked my playing. Then they would get fired, and I'd be left with the record company. And then - because they got fired - the record company wouldn't do anything for me.

The thing is that I have a really intense, almost compulsive need to record. But it doesn't end there, because what I record is somehow transformed into a creative thing. There is a continuity. Recording is the beginning of a conceptual production. I am somehow collapsing the two - recording and producing - into a single event.

The record company started as an adjunct to that, to give young composers their first recorded performances; to give young musicians their first debut on a recording. These are all things that big record companies would never touch because there is no money in it!

When I think back now to the recording sessions, there is more improvisation than one hears. It's an ideal combination of arrangements and improvisation. Only a few people are able to listen and say what is composed and what is improvised. It's a unit.

I've been lucky to be able to make the records I've wanted to make. The record company has never pressured me to cut certain songs.

Payola Blues
This ones for you al freed,
Wherever you go, whatever you do
cause the things theyre doing today
Will make a saint out of you
Payola blues.
Ive got the payola blues
Even though I already paid my dues.
Listen to me mr. d.j., hear what Ive got to say
If a man is making music, they ought to let his record play.
Payola blues
No matter where I go
I never hear my record on the radio.
Well, heres three thousand, that ought to get it on.
Well, thanks a lot man! I love your new song.
Payola blues
No matter where I go
I never hear my record on the radio.
And it goes like this.
I got a brand new record company, new manager too.
Got a great new record, I cant get through to you.
Payola blues
No matter where I go
I never hear my record on the radio.
How about this new mercedes benz, that ought to get it on.
Well, thanks a lot man! Ill play it all day long.
Payola blues
No matter where I go
I never hear my record on the radio.
Ive got the payola blues, payola blues
Im paying those payola blues
No matter where I go
I never hear my record on the radio.

It is basically theft. You spend your life recording albums and you take a year to record an album and write all your songs and when it comes down to it, people are selling it for nothing close to the value of it.

Most artists have contracts directly with the record company, and when they do music, all of their music is owned by the record company. But I did mine through a production company.
Keep Yourself Accessible
Did you dropp your smile?
Something is missing on your face.
And I know I haven't seen that in a while.
Did it hurt?
Have you deserted it,
To carry that frown?
Don't be down.
Keep yourself accessible.
Turn around.
Get rid of that frown.
Keep yourself accessible.
Don't dry up like a vegetable.
Or a grape reduced to a raisin juiced.
Showing you've been pruned,
From a plum someone had used!
Keep yourself accessible.
Turn around.
Get rid of that frown.
Invite more sun to come around.
Keep yourself accessible.
Become a fine wine...
That's been aged over time.
And decide in your mind...
The life you live welcomes Sunshine!
Keep yourself accessible.
With a spring in your step,
Bouncing in your prime.
Yes...
Keep yourself accessible.
Turn around.
Don't be down.
Keep yourself accessible.
And in your mind welcome Sunshine,
Today.
Hey...
And in your mind welcome Sunshine,
Today.
Hey...
And in your mind welcome Sunshine,
Today.
Hey...
Keep yourself accessible.
And in your mind welcome Sunshine,
Today.

Interested listeners have only to hear the recording to find out if those guys, who go to such pains to undervalue my work, are right. All people have to do is listen to realize it is a beautiful record.

Singles choose themselves. You can tell when you are playing the record to the company from the oohs and aahs whether a track works or not. I used to know what a single would do 10 years ago but now I don't have any idea and tend to leave it to the record company.
If You Wanna
If you wanna
If you wanna
If you wanna love me again
Ill take you for a ride in my cadillac.
Hell be in the front, well be in the back
When youre ready
Let me know
Ill be waiting
To make arrangements for the trip
To make arrangements for the trip
To make arrangements for the trip
And if you wanna
If you wanna,
If you wanna do it again.
Ill take you to the coast for a holiday
You can be my guest
You can let me pay-yeah
When youre ready
Well, let me know.
Ill be waiting
To make arrangements for the trip
To make arrangements for the trip
To make arrangements for the trip
Whenever youre ready
When you wanna love me
This is what you need
To be thinking of me
When you plant the seed of love
When youre ready
Let me know
Ill be waiting
To make arrangements for the trip
To make arrangements for the trip
To make arrangements for the trip
Well if you want to love me
This is what you need
To be thinking of me
When you plant the seed
The seed of love
If you wanna
If you wanna
If you wanna love me again
Ill take you for a ride in my cadillac.
Hell be in the front, well be in the back
When youre ready
Let me know
Ill be waiting
To make arrangements for the trip
To make arrangements for the trip
To make arrangements for the trip

Normally, you go into the recording studio, make a record and then take it on the road and you think... wow... I could have done THIS to it, or something.

After playing so many songs in churches for eight or nine years, I've learned what songs people react to. Then I just had fun with the arrangements. That's how this album came together.
Different Sets of Disciplines
It is hard to make you part,
Of my creative process.
You wish I needed your assistance.
But how would I apply that...
When all of life and what life is,
Supplies my inspiration.
Is it difficult for you to see yourself,
In everything I do?
Because everything I do is not about you.
Even though for you I choose to be accessible.
But when that gets excessive,
Your presence has to go!
It is hard to make you part,
Of my creative process.
You wish I needed your assistance.
But how would I apply that...
When all of life and what life is,
Supplies my inspiration.
And when that no longer becomes my motivation,
A mood comes over me.
Darker than a cloud that produces thunder.
And storms about as if engaged to strike at the sight,
Of malaise that comes to threaten...
Curtailing the process that feeds my mind with delighted,
Excitement.
And since you do none of that,
We can only share...
Those moments when I am not 'ON'.
And I do my best to stay 'ON' as long as possible.
Until I am off to go to bed.
Like I feel that need to do right now!
We come from different sets of disciplines.

Not Wheelchair Accessible
I have something to say but no one will hear it because I can’t get in.
The place to speak is not wheelchair accessible.
My whole life I have been on the outside looking in.
Because most business owners brains are not wheelchair accessible.
When I’m on the street corner just waiting for bus some one walks up and hands me a dollar because they think I’m begging another mind that is not wheelchair accessible.
I know most people have to look down to see me, but they don’t need to look down on me. A person who is unable to see past the physical is a person who will never see that I’m not the one with the disability they are. Do you hear me or are you not wheelchair accessible.
That's my favorite subject because it really levels the playing field for artists these days. You don't have to sell out to the record company. You don't have to get a five hundred thousand dollars, or whatever, and pay them back for the rest of your life to record a record.

No Bed For Beatle John
No bed for beatle john
Beatle, john lennon,
Lost his hospital bed yesterday, to a patient
It happened at queen charlottes hospital, london
Where john was keeping vigil in the room
Where his girlfriend yoko ono,
Is being kept under observation
When he realised his bed was needed for an urgent case,
John sent out for a sleeping bag,
And last night
He was once more happily kipped down, alongside yoko,
In the sleeping bag.
Yoko, who expects a baby next february
Will remain in the hospital for another few days
A beatles spokesman said
There is a good chance for the babys survival.
The beatles win battle of the nude lp
The beatles have won their fight to put
Out an lp record with a sleeve showing
John lennon and yoko ono in nude
Emi the worlds biggest recording company
Whose artists include the beatles
Refused to handle the lp called two virgins because of the sleeve.
So did the groups american outlet, capitol records
But the record with its controversial sleeve
Will be released in both countries next month
An official of the beatles apple company said last night
The sleeve has not yet been censored or altered in any way
Were pleased it has been distributed it may be that some record shops may still
Refuse to handle it.
