I think film had a terrible effect on horror fiction particularly in the 80s, with certain writers turning out stuff as slick and cliched as Hollywood movies.

At the time I came along, Hollywood's idea of teen movies meant there had to be a lot of nudity, usually involving boys in pursuit of sex, and pretty gross overall. Either that or a horror movie. And the last thing Hollywood wanted in their teen movies was teenagers!

In horror, character development is often pushed aside in favor of the shock value. The best genre movies to me are movies like The Shining. You had a connection to the characters in that film.

Now you've got to put your hands together!

Not too long ago

And I saw the Kool & The Gang show
I always wanted (oh yes I did)
To fit into a band
I got to, I got to:
Sing my songs, sing my songs, sing my songs
And become a big piano playing man
So here I am, here I am, here I am...
Oh, in this Hollywood city
Yeah.. City of stars, movies, women and cars
Well I guess.. I guess I have to stay! Alright!
Hey Hey Hey! (Come On Sing It!)
What you got to say? What you got to say now yeah?
Hey Hey Hey! (Sing It Now!)
What you got to say? What you got to say now yeah?
Hollywood! (Hollywood Yeah)
Hollywood Swingin'!

As far as film goes, I enjoy all Hollywood films and all Horror films like The Bride of Frankenstein, which also might be my favorite. I like 60's and 70's Italian and Spanish Horror films.

Starlight
Starlight open wide
Starlight open up you door
This is new york calling
With movies on the street
Movies with real people
What you get is what you see
Starlight open wide
Andys cecil b. demille
Come on l.a. give us a call
Weve got superstars who talk
Theyll do anything at all
Ingrid, viva, little joe
Baby jane, and eddie s.
But you better call us soon
Before we talk ourselves to death
Starlight open wide
Everybody is a star
Split screen 8 hour movies
Weve got color, weve got sound
Wont you recognize us
Were everything you hate
Andy loves old hollywood movies
Hell scare you hypocrites to death
You know that shooting ups for real
That person whos screaming
Thats the way he really feels
Were all improvising
Five movies in a week
If hollywood doesnt call us
Well be sick
Starlight open wide
Do to movies what you did to art
Can you see beauty in ugliness
Or is it playing in the dirt
There are stars out on the new york streets
We want to capture them on film
But if no one wants to see em
Well make another and another
Starlight let us in that magic room
Weve all dreamt of hollywood
It cant happen too soon
Wont you give us a million dollars the rent is due
And will give you 2 movies and a painting
Starlight open wide

Horror Stories
Massive scandals.
Deceitful and corrupted politicians.
Incompetent leaders,
Fronting business interests.
And selected puppets dangling,
From strings pulled becoming frayed.
Wearing thin on the pockets,
Of those underpaid and jobless.
What horror stories.
'Well honey,
Just change the channel.
Why sit there letting that science fiction stuff,
Get next to you.
There is always Animal Planet and Hallmark.
And...
I am sure there are other movies you can watch.
We are paying enough for cable as it is.
Take advantage of the benefits.'

All these horror movies are slasher film now. I like them, they're fun, but they wink at the audience and you're really not terrified through the movie.

So I was asked to do horror film after horror film, a series of about five, after that, and some of those were a little too gruesome. I wasn't too comfortable all the time in those. I didn't really care for them.
Some major writers have a huge impact, like Ayn Rand, who to my mind is a lousy fiction writer because her writing has no compassion and virtually no humor. She has a philosophical and economical message that she is passing off as fiction, but it really isn't fiction at all.

Why should a horror film be just a horror film? To me, The Company of Wolves is a fairy tale; it's got all those elements plus a lot more. And we know that fairy tales aren't innocent any more.

I'll probably pursue doing more movies, but not horror or movies with killers in them. I'll try to stick to happy movies. I want to act and direct like Jodie Foster. I admire her because she went to college and she's still doing the same thing.

I think I have always tried to do the smaller films. I like to jump around and there is something really nice for acting in a smaller film. But I think now, Hollywood's movies certainly involve a younger generation for the most part and so... I love going back and forth.
