One of my first jobs was at the Boston Globe. I worked in the sports department six months a year. When I was ready to graduate, the sports editor gave me a job as a schoolboy sports writer.

MUCH MORE THAN SPORTS
James Kenneth McManus
September 24,1921 – June 7,2008
We heard the, 'thrill of victory,
and the agony of defeat'
We all knew when he said it
That, we’d be in for a treat.
Through the, 'Wide World Of Sports'
He showed us places, never seen
From the North Pole to the South
And all of those, in between.
He spent years spanning the Globe
And brought us news and sports
And from the Olympics in Munich
He gave us all, those sad reports.
His passion was the sport of kings
Founder of the, 'Maryland Million Day'
His love of horses and their races
Lasting, until his final day.
A legend in the sports industry
But, he left us so much more
Showed, it’s how you play the game
It’s not how much, you score.
This World will be a lesser place
Without his great charm and wit
Yes, he surely will be missed
Much more, than just a little bit.

As a kid I was fascinated with sports, and I loved sports more than anything else. The first books I read were about sports, like books about Baseball Joe, as one baseball hero was called.

Running Away From Problems
Running away from problems she is
While she is driving
Her sports car
In the highway
This is a perfect day
To go on a ride
In her sports car

I think we have our sports within our own culture that are huge with baseball, football, basketball, and hockey. Those are the sports in America that we grow up with and soccer isn't really there yet.

I enjoy sports. I get a real joy from playing sports but I don't look for those movies. Oliver Stone wanted to know if I would do Any Given Sunday and it just didn't appeal to me.

To be candid with you, free agency hurts all sports. It's great for athletes making an enormous amount of money. But to say it helps the sports, I don't believe that.

Sports Become War
Sports were substituted to wars
To release man's killing spirit.
They are harmless, less expensive.
Sportsmen and viewers are thus fed.
Now sports have replaced the war
And being fought like a war.

School Photos from the Past
They loved the school activities
Took part and did it well
When you see old school photos
Instantly you can tell
Sports were top on their list
Of accomplishments to make
They had to keep their grades up
If sports they were to take
Don’t you love the pictures?
Though faded now with time
Young folks worked together
Created friendships that would bind
Memories are so precious here
That will forever last
So fun it is to view and enjoy
School photos from the past!

I don't read a lot of the sports, because I think people sometimes either build it up, or you have this guy that hates sports that is going to write bad about it, so I figure I'm not going to read it. Because I'm not going to let him put an idea into my head.

A House In The Country
He don't need no sedatives to ease his troubled mind.
At work he is invariably unpleasant and unkind.
Why should he care if he is hated in his home,
'Cause he's gotta house in the country,
And a big sports car.
He's gotta house in the country,
And a big sports car.
But he ain't gotta home, oh no,
And he's as wicked as he can be,
'Cause he's gotta house in the country
Where he likes to spend his weekend days.
Oh yeah, oh yeah, well all right
Well, he got his job when drunken Daddy tumbled down the stairs.
From that very day this boy is more than having his share.
One of these days I'm gonna knock him off of his throne,
'Cause he's gotta house in the country,
And a big sports car.
He's gotta house in the country,
And a big sports car.
And he's oh so smug, oh yeah.
He's got everything he needs,
'Cause he's gotta house in the country
Where he likes to spend his weekend days.
Oh yeah, oh yeah, well all right
And he's oh so smug, oh yeah.
He's got everything he needs,
'Cause he's gotta house in the country,
And a big sports car.
He's gotta house in the country,
And a big sports car.
But he's socially dead, oh yeah,
And it don't matter much to him,
'Cause he's gotta house in the country
Where he likes to spend his weekend days.
Oh yeah, oh yeah, well all right
House in the country
House in the country
House in the country
House in the country
