I can't believe I survived, not only my life, but I am still playing football 'cause half of those eight or nine years I don't even remember.

God Only Knows
I was waiting for something
I was listening to my breathing
Like a man listening to life
I was looking for fire
It could take me or leave me
It could all just burn away
The oxygen law
It remains me
Id been surrounded for hours
By the sound of thinking metal
And I knew something was wrong
I can tell you what fear is
It is the smell of burning
And Id been close once before
I waited a long time
How I survived God only knows
It seemed like forever
How I survived God only knows
I dont like the memory
How I survived God only knows
How I survived God only knows
I remember the feeling
Ill remember forever
How it all just came apart
I dont believe in praying
I dont believe in a god
Now I question everything
The dreamer is gone
Im an old man
I could tell you of horror
I could show you the pieces
But I just want to forget
Im not sure if I saw it
Im not sure if I heard it
I just screamed i cant get out
i cant get out

5. Friends
I remember in the fifties we didn’t have a lot
We were always pleased with everything we had
I remember how we utilised the things that we had got
Making things we knew would make each other glad
I remember sticks of rhubarb were red but mainly green
Tasting sour it would shrivel up your face
I remember hide & seek we tried hard not to be seen
Or running fast and calling it a race
I remember playing football in the middle of the road
Using jackets as a makeshift sort of goal
I remember by the pond on the day we found a toad
Where the tadpoles swam around it in a shoal
I remember in the summer playing out till it was dark
Made up games from almost anything we found
I remember bits of wood that we took down to the park
Wickets, bats a ball we had a cricket ground
I remember setting standards for other kids to beat
Always being there to set the latest trends
I remember summer sun that gave out a pleasant heat
But I remember most those very special friends

Im Alive
Your hands were covered in paint
The pillow smothered my cry
You were half charmer half snake
I lived in dreamtime
But Im alive
I survived you
And the bitter taste
The years I wasted
All the hate is gone
cause Im alive
Some nights Id sleep in the car
Just to escape you
You drove devotion too far
No-one could save you
But Im alive
I survived you
And the bitter taste
The years I wasted
All the hate is gone
cause Im alive
I still have visions of you
I still have nights to get through
And when the trust isnt true
I have these visions of you
I have these visions of you
And Im alive
I survived you
And the bitter taste
The years I wasted
All the hate is gone
cause Im alive
Im alive
Im alive
Ride on and fade away
Im alive
Theres nothing more to say
Im alive
Ride on and fade away
Im alive
Theres nothing more to say
Im alive
Ride on and fade away
And the bitter taste
The years I wasted
All the hate is gone

I missed out on my teenage years. I led a sheltered life. I was practicing scales instead of playing football.
Football
I'm a football baby,
Rollin' round the field.
I've been passed and fumbled,
Till I don't know what I feel.
Everybody's the same,
They're all footballs too.
Setting up the big play
And trying to score.
I'm a football baby
In a football game
I'm a football baby
Run--kick
Life's a football game,
As every chump and champ knows.
We don't touch, we collide,
Till we're worn out inside.
We're kicking each other,
Right where it hurts,
Setting up the big play,
And trying to score.
I'm a football baby,
In a football game
I'm a football baby,
I'm a football baby,
In a football game
I'm a football baby,
Block--pass
I'm a football baby,
In a football game
I'm a football baby,
Run---kick---hit---goal .

I was a very good baseball and football player, but my father always told me I was much more interested in how I looked playing baseball or football than in actually playing. There's great truth in that.

So if one day the result becomes 3-3, for me it doesn't change my mind, because it's football, it's normal. What is not normal is that we haven't been scoring enough goals playing such good football as we've been playing in the last few weeks.

A Memory From 85
I've always thought that Gaelic Football was a grand and a sporting game
But after witnessing a match between Rockchapel and Kiskeam
Played in the Gaelic Playing Field half a mile from Knocknagree
The uglier side of Gaelic Football was all brought home to me.
'Twas Duhallow B league final on an evening in July
And with little to enthuse about for a neutral such as I
A scrappy game of football and the language it was crude
And both sets of supporters were mouthing loud and rude
And I watched on in silence and I could not feel amused
When a linesman by an old Rockchapel mentor was abused
And one could feel the tension rising and things were boiling to a brawl
And 'twould not be a night for sportsmanship or classical football.
And worse was to come later and an ugly sight to see
A young Rockchapel player assaulting the referee
And when he received his marching orders and refused to leave the field
The ref to intimidation rightly refused to yield.
The ref blew the final whistle with Kiskeam to the fore
They had won a tarnished victory by a mere five points to four
In a brutal game of football they'd survived a gruelling test
But at kicking and at mouthing they had come out second best.
'Twas a sad night for Gaelic Football and Duhallow's night of shame
And I'm not pardoning Kiskeam they must partly share the blame
But for a cup and set of medals and with little else at stake
For their attitude and thuggery Rockchapel took the cake.
The ref's motor van was interfered with and a door lock it got broke
By a wild man from Rockchapel a half crazed gray haired bloke
And this rowdy behaviour over a game of ball
It's no wonder I felt sickened fairly sickened by it all.
I've always thought that Gaelic football did not have an ugly side
That the players and spectators on their native game took pride
But now I know quite different and I see things differently
Since that Duhallow local derby game that was played in Knocknagree.

Something Real
words and music by emily saliers
I've seen the sun on a funeral, the full moon in a midday sky
Tactician politician hold his head and wonder why
I'm always struck that much harder by the power of suggestion
By now I know the answer's always in the question
Now that we're done with that why don't you warm the car
All of the fields are filled with fresh boys playing football
More than the weather chills, the bands practicing their drills
I've got to get back to something real with you
I had to call your parents to get your number again
I was either gonna be the prodigal or the banished friend
We were standing against an outside wall, I was afraid of what you'd say
It took me ten years to call you back but here we are today
Now that we're done with that why don't you warm the car
All of the fields are filled with fresh boys playing football
More than the weather chills, the bands practicing their drills
I've got to get back to something real with you
So life has brought you this: two marriages and three kids
And me life as slick as ice that finally hit the skids
You're as sweet as you ever were
A slight sickness of regret washes over me
And in the end that's all I get
Now that we're done with that why don't you warm the car
All of the fields are filled with fresh boys playing football
More than the weather chills, the bands practicing their drills
I've got to get back to something real
I've got to get back to something real
I've got to get back to something real with you

Some of the money going to the rookies can now be spent on people who have proved their worth. After all, the average playing life of a pro football player is about eight years and it is only fitting that the veterans get something for their efforts.
The Dying Ex Football Champion
Around his bed his friends and family but of them he's not aware
His life's journey about to end old Joe the ex footballer player
On his back his eyes closed to his surroundings the life from him ebbing away
Last month he celebrated his eightieth birthday and today his life's final day.
Pre-deceased by his wife Mel she died five years ago
The last two years of his life's journey for him painful and slow
Most of those he played with and against in his football years to the Reaper long gone
But like the battler that he is to the end he's battling on.
Fifty five years ago the Captain of the great Premiership team
By football fans from near and far he was held in high esteem
But time takes care of everyone and everyone means all
And time has also taken toll of the champion of football.
Around his bed his friends and family a silent vigil keep
The end of his life's journey no more than an hour away he is in his final sleep
'Tis a fact those who love life do find it hard to die
But 'tis also a fact that all human beings are mortals and facts do never lie.

Half As Much
I've been up and and down the highway
And i've seen what a man can do
To some little girl along the byway
That's why i sing this song to you
If you find your baby's gone
And you don't know where or when
You wonder, yes you wonder
If you'll ever see him again
Just remember, remember
These simple words i brought
Soon it won't hurt half as much
No it won't hurt half as much
No it won't hurt half as much as you thought
'cause i been up and down the highway
And i watch them as they pass by
Broken hearts and i wish that they'd go my way
I'd save them every little teardrop they cry
Won't you listen?
If you think you can't go on
And life ain't got it for you no more
You're waitin' every night
For him to come walkin' through that door
Just remember, remember
These simple words that i brought
Soon it won't hurt half as much
No it won't hurt half as much
No it won't hurt half as much as you thought
Well, it won't hurt half as much
No, it won't hurt half as much
Lord, it won't hurt half as much as you though
Fades
And everytime you're sad, you cry
You feel like you...

The Football Fan
They love their football team
their loyalty is never in doubt
they rarely ever miss a match
from the stands they scream and shout.
Even when the teams playing poor
and their favourite player is off key
that will never stop them from going
as the ground is where they want to be.
Football is always on their minds
they think about it night and day
non football fans think they must be crazy
watching men kicking a ball home and away.
Relationships can become strained and tense
as football takes the leading role
partners can become irritable and even jealous
when the fan talks for hours about a wonder goal.
The fan even dreams of football in their sleep
shouting out and butting the pillow with their head
they jump up and down as if they've scored a goal
and kick their partner out of the bed.
Yes the football fan is a breed apart
slightly eccentric and a thick skinned soul
when all that matters to them in life
is seeing their favourite player score a winning goal!

I Don't Know How I Got By
How did I wake up each day
Before that moment I saw your face
Where was I before your touch
No where is where I was, without you
Without you in it
My life was just a lie
Before you I don't know how I got by
Before I met you
Before I held you in the night
I don't know how I survived
Before I found you
Before you made everything right
I was half alive
I wasn't really living till you came into my life
I got through baby
But I don't know how I got by
How did I get through those nights
Before that moment I held you tight
And where was I before your kiss
And how did I exist without you
Life had no meaning
No reason and no rhyme
And before you I don't know how I got by
Before I met you
Before I held you in the night
I don't know how I survived
Before I found you
Before you made everything right
I was half alive
I wasn't really living till you came into my life
I got through baby
But I don't know how I got by
I thank God when I wake each day
Awaking next to you
Don't know what I was living for
Before you, before you ohhhhh
Before I met you
Before I held you in the night
I don't know how I survived
Before I found you
Before you made everything right
I was half alive
I wasn't really living till you came into my life
I got through baby
But I don't know how I got by
Before I met you
I don't know how I got by

Only A Nameless General
Oh, there are so many many casualties when
We can only talk about
Giants and football, and even now none of any of this
Will survive:
While I and her maybe survived for a month or two:
It was always what I was good for, and then to falter again
Like a really fabulous plane die,
Like a superhero out of sorts, and like the triple crown horse
Braking down again before super time:
And I have cleaned up again and talked to myself before
The broken yards:
And children are playing football and going inside again
Feeling happy about themselves
Down the donkey strips of dirt roads; and even while I suppose
This is beautiful,
Like the failing end of Christmas, none of this eventually
Will survive;
It is pretty in its bloom and it does its time- Alma,
While you make love in your room, and the world spits out
Its jubilee and turns around again,
And again, but even still it is only a nameless general in its
Mass graveyards,
And I am afraid, of course, that none of this will survive.

You May Know A Lot About Your Favourite Game
You may know a lot about your favourite game
And from your commentaries and writings on it you know of wealth and fame
But there's more to life than talking of and writing of football
And about other things you seem to know little at all
By the followers of football your type are well known
And they look up to you as one in a class of your own
They well may be happy your praises to sing
For football to them is an important thing
But by other than me it has been said before
That football is just a game that and little more
For many from life's cares a brief getaway
To cheer on their team in the game of the day
And you football writer and commentator and sporting celebrity
You may seem enlightened to many but not so to me.
