Like Venice, Italy, New Orleans is a cultural treasure. And everyone who lived in the city should be allowed to come back. But that doesn't mean that they all should live in exactly the same spot that they lived before.

Venice Drowning
Venice breathing, shiny shoe mirrors of sex and violence,
In the purple evening silence, venice dreaming of a partner.
Fill your arms with breasts of marble, from the cradle to the table
Coax this naked treasure, from your saviour.
Come swim into my love
Come swim into my life
Divine blasphemer tempting, holly beads of jism
With a scarlet catechism, her lips will answer
(ah, her lips will answer)
How to be, the perfect stranger, the perfect lover - wanting
And as youll discover - giving, and as youll discover - being.
Come swim into my love
Come swim into my life
Enter this sublime corrosion
Venice drowning in emotion
-
(the body stirs, and is reanimated, only briefly,
But then life is very brief)
(come swim into my life)
(come swim into my life)
(ah-ahh ah-ah ah-ah-whoo heyyey)
Venice drowning!
Venice drowning!
Venice drowning!
Venice drowning!
Venice drowning!
Venice drowning! (slowly disappearing..)
Venice drowning! (slowly disappearing..)
Venice drowning! (slowly disappearing..)
Venice drowning!.... (slowly disappearing..)

House Of The Risin' Sun
There is a house down in New Orleans they call the rising sun
And it's been the ruin of many a poor girl and me, oh God, I'm one.
My mother was a tailor, she sowed these new blue jeans
My sweetheart was a gambler, Lord, down in New Orleans.
Now the only thing a gambler needs is a suitcase and a trunk
And the only time when he's satisfied is when he's on a drunk.
He fills his glasses up to the brim and he'll pass the cards around
And the only pleasure he gets out of life is rambling from town to town
.
Oh tell my baby sister not to do what I have done
But shun that house in New Orleans they call the rising sun.
Well with one foot on the platform and the other foot on the train
I'm going back to New Orleans to wear that ball and chain.
I'm going back to New Orleans, my race is almost run
I'm going back to end my life down in the rising sun.
There is a house in New Orleans they call the rising sun
And it's been the ruin of many a poor girl and me, oh God, I'm one.

Pretoria
I look at a city,
a city once modern, new
and progressive, the cultural centre
of a nation
but now poverty
and mismanagement
is taking its toll.
Where ten years back
people could live in its apartments
now is a ghetto,
with prostitutes on the street,
primitive men urinating against buildings
and teenagers walking with ghetto-blasters
playing music at full volume.
Where at traffic lights
windows are smashed with bricks
and valuables are stolen,
parked cars are taken,
where cars are hijacked
with the barrel of a gun
and cars are even stripped
at the police grounds.
A capital city in a country
that has thrown its borders
wide open to the rest of Africa
and every criminal
has headed there
and gangsters live in paradise
but in the suburbs
people still are making a living
in fortresses guarded by dogs
and security devices,
with panic buttons
for the nearest rent a cop
and people still pray
and go to work and play
as if crime is the norm
and the inadequacy
of the new government
doesn’t really matter.

Orleans
My sister was named Orleans
After the town where she was born,
Dear Orleans, my best friend,
A little girl with hazel eyes,
Dear Orleans, please don’t cry,
Hold my hand and stay with me,
And never say good bye.
My sister grew up beautiful
Like so many little girls do,
My sister Orleans, late one night,
Danced with a man named Lou.
Dear Orleans, please come home,
Mama and daddy and I
Are waiting here for you.
My sister never came home that night,
And daddy called the law,
Mama paced the floor till dawn
And wrung her hands till they were raw,
Dear Orleans, we waited till
The police came to our house
And told us what they saw.
My sister had been ravished bad
And left to die alone.
The man called Lou had fled the town
And by morning he was gone.
Dear Orleans, thank God you lived,
Though you’ll never be the same,
At least you’re safe at home.
My sister Orleans grew a life
Conceived through hate and fear;
We tried to hide it from the town
But soon it became clear.
Dear Orleans, hid her shame
As day by day she swelled
And the baby’s birth drew near.
My sister thrashed and cried in bed
On the day the sun was high;
She begged for mercy and release
Till we heard the infant cry
Dear Orleans, reached out for him
I wrapped him in a towel
And watched her baby die.

The Planet Of New Orleans
Standin in the corner
Of toulouse and dauphine
Waitin on marie-ondine
Im tryin to place a tune
Under a louisiana moonbeam
On the planet of new orleans
In a bar they call the saturn
And in her eyes of green
And somethin that she said in a dream
Inside of my suit I got my mojo root
And a true love figurine
For the planet of new orleans
New orleans - the other planet
With other life upon it
And everythin thats shakin in between
If you should ever land upon it
You better know whats on it
The planet of new orleans
Now Im tryin to find my way
Through the rain and the steam
Im lookin straight ahead through the screen
And then I heard her say
Somethin in the limousine
bout taking a ride across the planet of new orleans
If she was an ace
And I was just a jack
And the cards were never seen
We could have been the king and the queen
But she took me back to her courtyard
Where magnolia perfume screams
Behind the gates and the granite
Of the planet of new orleans

I Live In A City As Great
I LIVE IN A CITY/ AS GREAT
I live in a city
As great as holy as conflicted
As history itself
Many years have I lived here
And little have I written about it-
Much greater than me
Have written here Holy Books for mankind here-
Generations of Jews
Prayed to live here-
I have been blessed
The city will always be too great for me
But I hope to live here to the end of my life.

Small City
She lived in a small city,
where the streetlights turn off
at 3am.
Where every store is closed except
for 3-4.
Sit outside at midnight, it's completely
quiet.
You could hear your breathing.
Everyone knew each other, gossip
rushes around quickly.
Groups of different kids around,
they're easy to spot when you
drive around.
But living in a big city like Winnipeg,
there's never any quiet time.
Wishing to move to a big city,
just makes you miss the small city.
Whatever you really want, usually
it's like everything else you have except
newer.
You sit outside, you could hear everything
in the air.
Just complete silence, maybe a car or two.
Everyone here is family. Sort of

Louisiana Purchase
Louisiana purchase, I'll tell you what it means
It means I'd like to sell you New Orleans
Come on, come on
And you all can go to town way down in New Orleans
Louisiana salesman with nothing in his jeans
That's why I'd like to sell you New Orleans
Come on, come on
And do all the things there are to do in New Orleans
Where does that heat come from?
That rhythmic beat come from?
And that red meat come from?
New Orleans
Louisiana purchase, I told you what it means
So won't you let me sell you New Orleans?
Come on, come on
And you all can go to town way down in New Orleans

Capital City
Nerve and nerve
This coastline swerves
To a city that they live on
I walk on by
Animals cry
To a city that they live on
To a city that they walk on
To a city that they live on
Pulse feel pulse
This train is late
I hesitate
To a city that they live on
Dance the dance of violence
To a city that they live on
To a city that they crawl on
To a city that they live on
Pulse feel pulse
City that they live on
Feel
To a city that they crawl on
To a city live on
Feel
City that they crawl on

All Alone In The Big City
All alone in the big city and your money running low
And you've got no one to turn to and there's no one that you know
And no bank or institution who would chance you with small loan
And you feeling fairly homesick and you miles away from home.
All alone in the big city and not one chance of a job
And there's no one you can turn to for to borrow a few bob
It's a scary sort of feeling have you ever lived this way
And have you ever knelt in desperation and for help to god did pray? .
All alone in the big city and you way down in your luck
And nobody want to know you and you feeling fairly stuck
And you start to feel suicidal seem for you the best way out
And you yearning for the good days when you lived from 'hand
to mouth'.
All alone in the big city and your feet blistered and sore
And you've walked more miles on this day than you've ever walked before
And you've got no bed to sleep on and your roof the open sky
Doesn't it seem understandable then that you might wish to die

When my lover put the sea between us
When my lover put the sea between us
And went wandering in Italy
My poor silly heart miscalled his journey—
'Leaving me'.
Towns of Spain and Italy he stayed in,
Each and all of them to me unknown;
How could he find pleasure being a lover,
Being alone!
Truly I was not as fair as Venice,
Noble as Siena, strange as Rome.
Certainly he loved Milan and Florence
More than home.
I believed his absence had estranged us
And across the heart-dividing sea
Sent him word that I no longer loved him.
Foolish me!
Came his answer after months of waiting
Echoing my letter, lie for lie.
Truth or lies I know not. Which unfaithful,
He or I.

The British are so funny. It's like they can't believe I lived in Hackney. 'You could live in Bondi Beach. Why would you want to live in 'Ackney?' But Hackney's fantastic. I'm serious. There are so many artists there. I loved the markets, the parks, the pubs, the diversity. It was a cultural melting-pot.

House Of The Rising Sun
Traditional
There is a house in new orleans
Call it the rising sun
And its been the ruin
Of many a poor girl
And me, oh lord, Im one
If Id listened what my mama said
Be at home today
Bein so young
And foolish, my lord
Let a gambler lead me astray
My mother was a tailor
Sews new blue jeans
My sweethearts is a drunkarad, lord
Drinks down in new orleans
Go tell my baby sister
Never do what I have done
Shun that house in new orleans
They call it the rising sun
Goin back to new orleans
Race is almost run
Goin back to spend my life
Beneath, beneath, beneath, oh lord
Beneath, oh now
Beneath the rising, rising sun
Now, now
You come on bye

It Really Doesn't Matter
You say your ugly, i say it doesn't matter.
You say you have a dark past,
i say it doesn't matter.
You say theirs overwhelming responsibility,
i say it doesn't matter.
I don't believe in walking away when things get hard.
In fact they are my spark to continue my march.
Through thick and thin where to begin.
You say you don't have a way.
I say it doesn't matter.
You say that you cant give back what you would like.
I say it doesn't matter.
You say, you say oh it really doesn't matter,
I live one day at a time.
Choices will be made that will save the day
but hurt me financially.
It doesn't matter Choice will be made
that will set me back in my expectations.
It doesn't matter,
It really doesn't matter.
Its well worth it.
To see the beauty that
you have placed before me.
Oh how its worth it.
To settle down and not be looking to be found.

Lived To Witness
No longer do I awaken with questions,
To doubt yesterdays that have gone.
What benefit from this would I get,
If I allowed myself to sit...
And not appreciate each dawn,
Lived to witness that comes along.
Each moment I am given to move ahead,
I do!
And those who refuse truth to do as they choose,
Would not improve my outlook.
What will remaining fixed to reminisce prove?
I have no purpose to value or live 'today' as I exist?
No longer do I awaken with questions,
To doubt yesterdays that have gone.
What benefit from this would I get,
If I allowed myself to sit...
And not appreciate each dawn,
Lived to witness that comes along.
My purpose is to live.
Give.
And from the doing of it,
Receive blessings to me that benefit.
