I liked Germany; I'm not into Berlin, it's too huge and empty and imposing, but Munich was good.

Different Germany

The lights are down in germany
And germany is closed to me
Different somehow this time.
The airports stiff, cold corridors
Ring empty beats through hollow feet
That I find to be mine.
Different germany.
History repeats somehow.
Different germany.
Afraid to know you now.
And past my eyes with leathered gaze
Stare clean-cut boys all dressed as men
In sharpened uniform.
Who turned the clock? (moved on or back)
And what dark chill is gathering still
Before the storm.
Out in the street a tableau double-glazed
With laughing girls whose fastened smiles
Are clearly not meant for me.

The particular feature of Berlin - well, all you need to do is look at the map: the geographical position of the city right in the heart of Europe, and the separation of the most powerful two blocs we've ever had in history, which went all the way through Germany.

To Germany With Love

I am an emigree, I write to germany
In foreign words, a tongue of actuality
Hands in grey gloves
To germany with love
A war between the wars
A war between the wars
Triumph over bygone sorrow
Can in unity be won
Let them all persue this purpose
Till reality is gone
I am an unexpected spy
From the outside of my eye
Translate it first then comprehend
Im here indeed but there I stand
I write to germany, I write to germany
To germany with love, to germany with love
This is the turn of colours
All real, some still unseen
There is no more decision cause theres too much in between
Let us build a nightmare nation
Learn and work as never yet
That this cold new generation faith in its own fears beget
Here comes the modern rat, here comes the terror squad
Ours is the salt of wisdom, here we come all dressed in black
From the ruins risen slowly to the future turned we stand
Flourish in this blessing glory
Flourish german fatherland
I write to germany, I write to germany
All quiet in germany, all quiet in germany

She Went To Germany

What you gonna do?
What you gonna do?
What you gonna do on your vacation?
What you gonna do?
What you gonna do?
What you gonna do for relaxation?
Change you name?
Cut your hair?
You can go anywhere.
You deserve some fun and rest.
You deserve the very best.
She went to germany.
Went there without me.
She went to germany.
Left me in misery.
She went to germany.
Gots some style insanity.
She went to germany.
Left me in disharmony.
Why you gonna do?
Why you gonna do?
Why you gonna do that to me baby?
Are you telling me were thru?
Are you telling me were thru?
Are you telling me were thru or is it maybe,
Just another declaration of some female independence,
Or another proclamation to some male friends in attendance.
She went to germany.
Went there without me.
She went to germany.
Left me in misery.
She went to germany.
Gots some style insanity.
She went to germany.
Left me in disharmony.
She eating wurst.
Shes drinking beer.
She loves a crowd, thats what I hear.
She went to germany.
Went there without me.
She went to germany.
Left me in misery.
She went to germany.
Gots some style insanity.
She went to germany.
Left me in disharmony.
She went to germany.
Went there without me.
She went to germany.
Left me in insanity.
She went to germany.
I gots some style in misery.
She went to germany.
Left me in disharmony.

Sons Are Liars

However ugly life appears
to be it’s good: so wrote Isaiah
Berlin to mollify the fears
of his dear mother. Sons are liars.

Timothy Garton Ash reviews Letters,1928-1946, by Isaiah Berlin (CUP) , edited by Henry Hardy (“A Genius for Friendship, ” New York Review, September 23,2004) . Like Clive James, he is puzzled the way that Berlin had so little to say about the events of the 1930’s and the Holocaust that followed but this poem was inspired by something completely different:

There is a moving early letter from the nineteen-year-old Shaya, as he was then known, to his spirited, musical, romantically aspiring mother, Marie, consoling her (“I know that your position is not sweet”) for the frustrations of living with the pedestrian caution of his merchant father, Mendel Berlin. “Remember, life is Good; and always will be Good however ugly it looks….” Somehow that remained Isaiah’s belief through all the horrors of the twentieth century, and this fundamentally optimistic, life-affirming attitude is one of the qualities that made him such a stimulating person.

First We Take Manhattan

Leonard Cohen)
They sentenced me to twenty years of boredom
For trying to change the system from within
I'm coming now I'm coming to reward them
First we take Manhattan, then we take Berlin
I'm guided by a signal in the heavens
I'm guided by this birthmark on my skin
I'm guided by the beauty of our weapons
First we take Manhattan, then we take Berlin
I'd really like to live beside you, baby
I love your body and your spirit and your clothes
But you see that line there moving through the station
I told you I told you I told you I was one of those
You loved me as a loser but now your worried that I just might win
You know the way to stop me but you don't have the discipline
How many nights I prayed for this: to let my work begin
First we take Manhattan, then we take Berlin
I don't like your fashion business, mister
I don't like these drugs that keep you thin
I don't like what happened to your sister
First we take Manhattan, then we take Berlin (chorus)
And I thank you for those items that you sent me
The monkey and the plywood violin
I practiced every night and now I'm ready
First we take Manhattan, then we take Berlin
Remember me, I used to live for music
Remember me, I brought your groceries in
It's Father's Day and everybody's wounded
First we take Manhattan, then we take Berlin

Commando

They do their best they do what they can
They get them ready for Viet Nam
From old Hanoi to East Berlin
Commando---Involved again
They do their best they do what they can
They get them ready for Viet Nam
First rule is: The laws of Germany
Second rule is: Be nice to mommy
Third rule is: Don't talk to commies
Fourth rule is: Eat kosher salamis
They do their best they do what they can
They get them ready for Viet Nam
From old Hanoi to East Berlin

Everytime I Eat Vegetables It Makes Me Think Of You

She was a really good friend
A really good friend to me, yeah
She was a really good friend
A really good friend to me, yeah
But they took her away
Tossed her in the bin
Now she's hanging out
In East Berlin, ow-ooo
She had a very bad affair
With some cat from Hiroshima
She turned into a head of lettuce
She eats Thorazine in her farina
But they took her away
Tossed her in the bin
Now she's hanging out
In East Berlin, ow-ooo
And everytime I eat vegetables
It makes me think of you
And everytime I eat vegetables
I don't know what to do, to do ow-ooo
