Charity
Charity is good
Without expectation of return
To a worthy person
At the proper time and place.
Charity is bad
With the expectation of some return
To an unworthy person
At an improper time and at an impure place.

Hope is itself a species of happiness, and, perhaps, the chief happiness which this world affords: but, like all other pleasures immoderately enjoyed, the excesses of hope must be expiated by pain; and expectations improperly indulged must end in disappointment. If it be asked, what is the improper expectation which it is dangerous to indulge, experience will quickly answer, that it is such expectation as is dictated not by reason, but by desire; expectation raised, not by the common occurrences of life, but by the wants of the expectant; an expectation that requires the common course of things to be changed, and the general rules of action to be broken.

A Tree in the Desert
A tree in the desert thirsts for water
A tree in the desert gets too much sun
A tree in the desert is alone in the freezing night
A tree in the desert might never be seen
A tree in the desert might never be touched
A tree in the desert may or may not thrive
A tree in the desert struggles to stay alive

Philosophers Bones
He’s given them all to a Desert Man
Underdog bitten holes of the head
He’s given them all to a Desert Man
Unleashed sunflower sunward led
He’s given them all to a Desert Man
In windblown power the dinas bled
He’s given them all to a Desert Man
Like tears in the desert rose shed
Stone alone atoned in the last sand clock
Soul alone attained keyed within the lock

My Calling
Love, not expectation.
Expectation is having my hand out.
What can you give me?
What do I get?
That is expectation, which is motive.
Love is having my hands out.
The sacrifice of me.
Being nailed to a cross for another.
Arms wide open to give, myself.
Not to give myself credit,
But to give myself away.
Love is the ultimate embracing of life itself.
The reward for love is love.
Or did I expect something else?
The only thing I wish to perfect in my life,
Is my love.
I believe that to be my calling.

Probability is expectation founded upon partial knowledge. A perfect acquaintance with all the circumstances affecting the occurrence of an event would change expectation into certainty, and leave nether room nor demand for a theory of probabilities.

The Irish Soldier
The Irish Soldier
Edward Marshall is my name
Ireland is my nation
Leeds is my dwelling place
And Heaven’s my expectation
My mother came from Erin’s isle
She’s buried in Dungannon
My sweetheart is a Limerick lass
The Rosebud of the Shannon
I came to Blighty seeking work
And listed for a soldier
For when the drums of war beat out
There is no man that’s bolder
They gave me three square meals a day
A uniform for drilling
A place to sleep, a private’s pay
A gun and blade for killing
I dreamt to Ireland I’d return
With gold and tales a-plenty
But on a stretcher here I lie
And both my pockets empty
They’ll patch me up and send me back
To trenches, rats and slaughter
Gas! Gas! the cry. For sure I’ll die
By bomb or poisoned water
My soul will go to God above
My body cannot follow
For ‘twill be filled by German lead
Dead, in a war-torn hollow
Edward Marshall is my name
Ireland is my nation
Leeds is my dwelling place
And Heaven’s my expectation

A Poisoned Chalice
Education
breeds expectation.
Expectation
leads to frustration.
Frustration
is a suicide bomber.
Flowers of the Void
are not so easily destroyed
Insubstantial from the start,
they shine on in each empty heart.

Desert Rats
Desert rats
Take cover in the heat,
They know what to toss
And what to keep -
They skillfully hide under big sombreros
And down lots of water,
They've learned well when to sit, and when to quit,
When to stay, and when to scatter -
The desert calls them
Right to the edge of existence;
But, too wise are they, any foolish games to play,
For in the desert they have found the art of survival is patience -
Listen close my friends for the divine desert to call you...
By all means, come and see,
But, with eyes wide open tread slowly
Following the tracks of wise old desert rats...
Just like me.

I walked in a desert
I walked in a desert.
And I cried,
"Ah, God, take me from this place!"
A voice said, "It is no desert."
I cried, "Well, But --
The sand, the heat, the vacant horizon."
A voice said, "It is no desert."

My Desert Serenade
(words & music by stan gelber)
Come here my serenade, my desert serenade
A lovers melody, to bring you close to me
Its a tender lullaby, born of golden sand and sky
The song is new, and its calling you
Tonight beside the desert palms
Come let me take you in my arms
Come here my serenade, my desert serenade
Wherever lovers dwell, it weaves its magic spell
Soon a thousand dreams will start,
And romance will fill your heart
My lips conceal, love thats warm and real
Give me a chance to hold you near
Youll see a brand new world appear
So come and hear, my desert serenade, my desert serenade,
My desert serenade

Fourth
expectation's hope rising, pulsing
as you bring the warmth and joy
that only a bright summer day
presents on a picnic blanket spread
filled with goodies and laughter
neatly packed away in a picnic basket
expectation's hope realising
as you take my hand in yours
thru the threshold of our home
prancing into the breeze and light
filled with memories and plans
lovingly packed for a rainy morn
expectation's hope resucitating
as your soothing breath caresses
taking my longings into belonging
perfecting inner transformation
filled with songs and dreams
movements in blissful harmony

The Bible in 256 Words
To be found, I must have been lost.
To be healed, I must have been broken.
To know love, I must know hate.
Nobody understood why we were all here.
Until, He came.
He came as His son, one of His children.
He showed us how to please Him.
We sacrificed others for the sake of self.
Burnt offerings.
We still don't get it.
The story, the life, the example.
For He died for us, so we should die for another.
To show the true meaning of love.
Love is not an expectation.
An expectation is an expectation.
He died, so we expect to be saved?
Turn from our ways, and forgive ourselves.
It is not ourselves we have wronged.
It was another.
Was I angry at another?
Or was I protecting the shame and guilt I felt by not pleasing my creator?
Honor comes from inner.
For if I did not react, I would know I have pleased my creator.
Instead, I pleased myself.
Do unto others, as I would have done unto myself.
For when I do unto others, I do unto myself.
I just don't realize it.
Revelation is my end, not everyone else's.
Genesis is my beginning.
Eden is my heaven.
And Jesus is my guide.
What is last is first.
To love other's before self,
Is to find self through others.
I am called to nail myself to the cross.
Sacrifice myself.
It is the way, the truth and the light.
As was my example to follow.
Not just to be a fan of.

Questions to Desert Wind…
You wonder,
Did the desert wind already forgotten to past?
No dearest, it has always blown so gently…
Crafting this dry open desert,
Shifting mystical sand dunes,
Bringing precious droplets to a thirsty bird,
To comfort her broken heart!
You further asked,
O desert wind…
Why erased my written message in the sand?
So let it be a permanent secret,
Cause I have already engraved it in my heart.

My Texas Desert Heaven
There's no tree,
As far as I can see,
The cactus are always green.
There's alot of sand,
But oh man,
This is my Texas desert heaven.
The stars are nice and bright,
The moon shines over desert sky at night,
That's My Texas desert night.
It's like being in Heaven,
When it rains it smells so great.
This is where my heart roams and stays,
This is My Texas Desert Heaven.

I Went Down into the Desert
I went down into the desert
To meet Elijah—
Arisen from the dead.
I thought to. find him in an echoing cave;
For so my dream had said.
I went down into the desert
To meet John the Baptist.
I walked with feet that bled,
Seeking that prophet lean and brown and bold.
I spied foul fiends instead.
I went down into the desert
To meet my God.
By him be comforted.
I went down into the desert
To meet my God.
And I met the devil in red.
I went down into the desert
To meet my God.
O, Lord my God, awaken from the dead!
I see you there, your thorn-crown on the ground,
I see you there, half-buried in the sand.
I see you there, your white bones glistening, bare,
The carrion-birds a-wheeling round your head.
