100,000 Pennies
I broke into the bank on Sunday,
You should see the money I got.
I couldn't drag it home 'til Monday,
'Cause it sure weighed an awful lot.
Then I sat down to count it,
And much to my surprise,
A whole lotta little brown, little round coins,
Rolled out before my eyes
Chorus:
I've got a hundred thousand dollars worth of pennies,
Not a solitary dollar or a dime,
And I don't believe there's many,
Rich men with a problem like mine.
And I don't think this is any
Kind of ending to a perfect crime.
I've got a hundred thousand dollars worth of pennies,
And I'm spendin' it a penny at a time!
Now a steak sure would taste delicious,
And I've forgot how a beer would feel,
But the man just might get suspicious,
If I gave him eight hundred pennies for a meal.
So I guess I'll just weigh myself again,
And buy me another stick of gum,
I've got a hundred thousand dollars worth of pennies, Lord!
And I'm livin' like a penniless bum!
Chorus:
I've got a hundred thousand dollars worth of pennies,
Not a solitary dollar or a dime,
And I don't believe there's many,
Rich men with a problem like mine.

Here we were talking about economic development, about investing billions of dollars in various programs, and I could see it wasn't billions of dollars people needed right away.

Events To Come?
The roamers and vagabonds
still roam this land.
They migrate towards the cities
and hold out their hand.
A few pennies here,
A few nickles there,
A few dollars, maybe
but that's pretty rare.
Most are afraid of them.
They look the other way.
For seeing is believing
on every passing day.
And so the business suits move on.
To their cubicles they go.
They're intent on how the market's doing
and their portfolio.
'How much money will I make?
Will I lose my shirt? '
They never think that they just might
wind up in the dirt
with a few pennies here,
a few nickles there,
a few dollars, maybe
for the market's now a bear.
Move over roamers
and vagabonds too.
Now we need handouts
just the same as you.

Dust Bowl
[ music: robert buck/words: natalie merchant ]
I should know to leave them home.
They follow me through the store with these toys I cant afford.
Kids, take them back, you know better than that.
Dolls that talk, astronauts, t.v. games, airplanes, they dont understand and how can I explain?
I try and try but I cant save.
Pennies, nickels, dollars slip away.
Ive tried and tried but I cant save.
My youngest girl has bad fever, sure.
All night with alcohol to cool and rub her down.
Ruby, Im tired, try and get some sleep.
Im adding doctors fees to remedies with the cost of three days work lost.
I try and try but I cant save.
Pennies, nickels, dollars slip away.
Ive tried and tried but I cant save.
The hole in my pocketbook is growing.
Theres a new wind blowing they say, its gonna be a cold, cold one.
So brace yourselves my darlings, it wont bring anything much our way but more dust bowl days.
I played a card in this weeks game.
Took the first and the last letters in three of their names.
This lotterys been building up for weeks.
I could be lucky me with the five million prize, tears of disbelief spilling out of my eyes.

You've Done That Already To Yourself
You told others I attacked you,
With abusive language.
You also suggested...
My tone of voice was not what you liked.
And I've taken everything I've heard,
Into consideration.
And I have come to apologize.
With the understanding I am so wrong.
'So
You're not angry with me for not paying you back,
The two hundred dollars I said I would pay you...
More than three months ago? '
No!
Not at all.
In fact
I want you to forget about that.
And every favor I have ever done for you.
At the expense of my own sacrificing done.
'WHY?
What are you going to do to me? '
Why would I want to do anything to you?
You've done that already to yourself.
I've just come to extend and express,
My condolences.
That's all.

If Teardrops Were Pennies
Wagon and dolly parton
An acre of diamonds Id offer to you
A solid gold mansion, an airplane or two
This whole world would be yours to have and to hold
If teardrops were pennies and heartaches were gold
Chorus
If teardrops were pennies and heartaches were gold
Id have all the riches my pockets would hold
Id be oh so wealthy with treasures untold
If teardrops were pennies and heartaches were gold.
The tears that have fallen wont buy you a thing
The heartaches you caused me wont pay for a ring
The love that I wanted would not have grown cold
If teardrops were pennies and heartaches were gold.
Repeat chorus
But teardrops arent pennies
And heartaches arent gold

For music, unlike a $500 software program, people are paying a buck or two a song, and it's those dollars and pennies that have to add up to pay for not just the cost of that song, but the investment in the next song.

Age
Ive been up and down and around and round and back again
Ive been so many places I cant remember where or when
And my only boss was the clock on the wall and my only friend
Never really was a friend at all
Ive traded love for pennies, sold my soul for less
Lost my ideals in that long tunnel of time
Ive turned inside out and around about and back and then
Found myself right back where I started again
Once I had myself a million, now Ive only got a dime
The diffrence dont seem quite as bad today
With a nickel or a million, I was searching all the time
For something that I never lost or left behind
Ive traded love for pennies, sold my soul for less
Lost my ideals in that long tunnel of time
Ive turned inside out and around about and back and then
Found myself right back where I started again
And now Im in my second circle and Im headin for the top
Ive learned a lot of things along the way
Ill be careful while Im climbin cause it hurts a lot to drop
When your down nobody gives a damn anyway
Ive traded love for pennies, sold my soul for less
Lost my ideals in that long tunnel of time
Ive turned inside out and around about and back and then
Found myself right back where I started again
