Not that there weren't great shows, and not that there wasn't plenty of fine music played. It's just that the consistency and the height of where we could take it, with the help of the audience, was less, I felt, in the '90s.

There are three things we need to do for a band. We need to make a great record; we need to get the record played; and we need to find an audience for the live shows.

The audience that surprised us the most was definitely Paris, when we played there last. They were just incredibly into us and we weren't expecting it at all.

That Music Extraordinaire, Mozart
That music extraordinaire, Mozart,
Who from his tender days, played with desire
Musical from the bottom of his heart.
Sweet notes from his music he did impart
That captivated audience to admire
That music extraordinaire, Mozart,
Whose tones can set an emotion to start
With a charm to have their hearts raised on fire
Musical from the bottom of his heart.
With pleasant pace from his great style of art
Is such that shows he was such a live wire,
That music extraordinaire, Mozart,
Whose harmony when heard is nice and smart
Can cheerfully raise hearts to go much higher
Musical from the bottom of his heart.
Joy occurs from such wonders that does chart
In tremendous ways that truly inspire.
That music extraordinaire, Mozart,
Musical from the bottom of his heart.

Because even at the age of fifteen, I used to go see all the Broadway shows and feel that they were sentimental, that they were pandering to the audience and trying to manipulate the audience. I had no use for practically any of the shows that were hits.

Describing Woodstock as the "big bang," I think that's a great way to describe it, because the important thing about it wasn't how many people were there or that it was a lot of truly wonderful music that got played.

Today...
Today, the leaves were greener
Today, the sky wasn’t grey
Today, the sun was brighter
Yes, it changed today
Today, people transformed
Today, they weren’t rude
Today, I felt loved
All just today, it’s true
Today, I lived for today
Today, was not for the future
Today, was a great day
Not menial, tiring, brutal
Today, I laughed in silence
Today didn’t make me cry
Today, everything became clearer
But, today, I couldn’t figure out why
And today, if everything changed
And today, if it wasn’t a dream
I don’t know what happened
But today will become everyday, it seems.

Dancing With The One-Legged...
Manson:...you're gonna have a bunch of angry kids.
Some Guy In the Audience: Well when you do go out to a club, that, you just
gotta watch yourself whatever you do. You just can't 'speckt to go out there
and just dance and don't get touched and non-violent because that's what it is.
The music--
Donahue: I, I don't see how you--
Some Guy In the Audience: If you get the music inside your soul, anything can
happen. You don't play the music, you can't get it. It's the music.
Donahue: The music?
Parent: Music is dangerous.

Church of the Little Drummer Boy
He didn't do it for money,
He didn't to it for power,
It wasn't an inside job,
And he probably wasn't real.
But he wasn't controlled by the Mafia,
Maybe he was just a dream,
Or maybe just a hope,
Of what Christmas might mean.
Over the years many a child
Has heard of the Little Drummer Boy,
How he played his drum for Jesus
To bring the Baby some joy.
He didn't do it to be a big shot,
He wasn't Ginger Baker,
He played out of musical love,
And he wasn't a faker.
If you're looking for religion,
The Drummer Boy is good to go,
I mean, he's as churchy as it gets,
Considering the show.

My Generation: The Good Ole Days
I remember a time when radio music was good.
I remember the twin towers and when they stood.
I remember television shows like Boy Meets World and Rocket Power,
sitting there while eating Warheads pretending they weren’t sour.
I remember white Christmases and full streets of lights,
I remember waiting for Santa on Christmas Eve nights.
I remember believing in a fat man with a white beard dressed in red
and every glass of milk and god damn cookie I fed.
I remember board games like Sorry, and Candy Land.
I remember playing in giant turtles; the ones filled with sand.
I remember when all it took was a Yo-Yo to feel fine,
even though I could never walk the dog, it was still a good time.
I remember the days we would all play capture the flag.
I remember the nights we dressed in black and played flashlight tag.
I remember Ghost In The Graveyard never lasted long,
there was always a bad-a** humming the tune of a creepy song.
I remember riding on a big yellow bus to a six hour day of school.
I remember when having Kooshes and Tomagotchi’s was cool.
I remember trading Pogs and Pokémon cards,
but could never get a holographic Charizard.
I remember when MTV actually played music.
I remember when a Big Red wrapper could make you “sick”
I remember when they first came out with big trampolines,
we would jump to the stars; at least that’s how it seemed.
I remember when life was simple.
I remember a night I was able to dream.

0406 The Summer Evening Music That Never Ended
It was such a warm summer evening
that the music that was promised us
after the evening meal, called to meet
the open air. I wondered, would it work,
would the delicacy of the music’s fine woven tapestry,
the shaped fine wood of instruments,
fine sounds from strings, flute, clarinet,
find themselves, or lose themselves,
on the mown front lawn before the house,
under the heavens’ curve?
Chairs, music stands, cello’s spike
were settled in the grassy earth; skirts arranged;
stillness as the group began to hear
each other’s silence and the music
not yet played; not far away; but almost here.
Something complete, it seemed,
was in the air.
Music began; acquired attitudes of listening
settled on the audience; and then, unannounced,
magic descended. Someone
who knew life so intimately, so completely,
who had passed through it even while
they lived it, was telling me in my inner ear
what life was, is, all about; in detail –
it’s like this; and this; this sweetness,
that sweetness; this sadness, that sadness;
sweetness that’s sad, sadness that is sweet;
all held like a gentle fountain - bubbling continuous,
yet gloriously and joyously, ever fresh;
to be welcomed, not to be judged or resisted,
(the hearing of it was way beyond such things)
for it held - listening to it now afresh, it holds -
all that may be known, that may be lived; this is life itself;
this, this is simply, how it is...
The sound is with me now; music told me;
this is how it is.

What is the best music is impossible to define. Just because it's played by a virtuoso player, doesn't mean it's great music. It might not reflect the soul of a people, which is really my criteria for great music.

Many What If’s And More
What if Cinderella wasn’t a princess
But the advertiser of a new flavored jellybean
What if Snow White wasn’t pretty
But the ugliest hag ever seen
What if soccer wasn’t a game
But a new kind of disease
What if an oven isn’t used for warming food
But to make them freeze
What if tom wasn’t a cartoon
But a new mechanical device
That help cats in catching mice
Get very quick and wise
What if Jerry wasn’t a mouse
But another name for cherry
What if a mountain wasn’t mountain
But a new kind of berry
What if shoes weren’t used on feet
But to help us see
What if I wasn’t myself
I wonder who’d write this instead of me!

Burying Her Ashes
Strange!
A person with great height
and weight is now turned
into an urn of ashes.
Down deep into a
little hole of the ground,
she is laid down
without music
and elegance.
Strange!
She, an equation
by contraction
or reduction!
And this life
of great height
and grandeur
is now inside
a metallic urn!

Until MTV, television had not been a huge influence on music. To compete with MTV, the country music moguls felt they had to appeal to the same young audience and do it the way MTV did.

I could feel the hackles on the back of my neck stiffening and I knew he felt the same way. Dog was meeting dog. Nobody knew it but the dogs and they weren't telling. He was bigger than I thought. The suggestion of power I had seen in his photographs was for real. When he moved it was with the ponderous grace of some jungle animal, dangerously deceptive, because he could move a lot faster if he had to. When we were ten feet away he pretended to see us for the first time and a wave of charm washed the cautious expression from his face and he stepped out to greet Dulcie with outstretched hand. But it wasn't her he was seeing. It was me he was watching. I was one of his own kind. I couldn't be faked out and wasn't leashed by the proprieties of society. I could lash out and kill as fast as he could and of all the people in the room, I was the potential threat. I knew what he felt because I felt the same way myself.

Do You Still Dance?
The whispers in my mind are here again.
I know you don't hear them
but you're where they began.
I should have turned them off
when I had the chance
But the music played and then we danced.
*** Do you still dance baby without me in your arms?
Do you still dance without me?
Can you still hear the music whenever you're alone?
Can you hear the music without me?
I want to dance again, dance with you.
When I feel that beat all that I can do
is remember how it felt
when I danced with you
when the music played and we danced.
And those whispers from the past are still with me.
I know you don't hear them
'cause they're where you can't be
I should have turned them off
when I had the chance.
But the music played and then we danced
