When I started studying tenor saxophone as a kid in Belfast, I did so with a guy named George Cassidy, who was also a big inspiration.

The saxophone is an imperfect instrument, especially the tenor and soprano, as far as intonation goes. The challenge is to sing on an imperfect instrument that is outside of your body.
I went back to Belfast and started a club, the Maritime. No one had thought about doing a blues club, so I was the first.

Her love is my inspiration
Her love is my inspiration
Love is the inspiration for my heart to sing a tune,
love is the inspiration for my ear to hear,
love is the inspiration for my soul to warm,
love is the inspiration for my mouth to smile,
love is the inspiration for my eyes to glisten.
Love is the inspiration to draw my soul near another
love is the inspiration for my mouth to utter sweet words,
love is the inspiration for my eyes to gaze upon her,
love is the inspiration for my heart to speak out.
Love is the inspiration for need, love is the inspiration for my mouth to touch hers,
love is the inspiration for my eyes to close,
love is the inspiration for my heart to race,
love is the inspiration for my tears to burn.
Love is the inspiration for longing,
love is the inspiration for my eyes to see only her,
love is the inspiration for my heart to cry out,
love is the inspiration for my ear to hear her whispers,
love is the inspiration for my soul to join hers forever.
Love is the inspiration for forever,
love is the inspiration for my heart to be whole,
love is the inspiration for my ear to always hear those words,
love is the inspiration for my soul to have hers,
love is the inpiration for my mouth to speak the truth.
Love is the inspiration for my soul to seek life
love is the inspirationfor my ear to hear her words,
love is the inspiration for my soul to reach for her,
love is the inspiration for my mouth to speak her truths,
love is the inspiration for my eyes to always look upon her first,
For she is the inspiration for my Love.

Throughout the evening I would be recording these long saxophone delays and about four hours into the concert, if I wanted to take a break I would just play back the saxophone.

Some people say there was no jazz tenor before me. All I know is I just had a way of playing and I didn't think in terms of any other instrument but the tenor.

Cassidy's Epitaph
Here lies a bloke who's just gone West,
A Number One Australian;
He took his gun and did his best
To mitigate the alien.
So long as he could get to work
He needed no sagacity;
A German, Austrian, or Turk,
Were all the same to Cassidy.
Wherever he could raise "the stuff"
-- A liquor deleterious --
The question when he'd have enough
Was apt to be mysterious.
'Twould worry prudent folks a lot
Through mental incapacity;
If he could keep it down or not,
Was all the same to Cassidy.
And when the boys would start a dance,
In honour of Terpsichore,
'Twas just an even-money chance
You'd find him rather shickery.
But once he struck his proper stride,
And heard the band's vivacity,
The jazz, the tango, or the slide
Was all the same to Cassidy.
And now he's gone to face the Light,
With all it may reveal to him,
A life without a drink or fight
Perhaps may not appeal to him;
But when St Peter calls the roll
Of men of proved tenacity,
You'll find the front-rank right-hand man
Will answer; "Here . . . Cassidy."

Sweet Inspiration
Lyrics and music by dan penn and spooner oldham
I need your sweet inspiration
I need you here on my mind
Every hour of the day
Without your sweet inspiration
The lonely hours of the night
Just dont go my way
A woman in love
Needs sweet inspiration
Yeah, and honey thats all I ask, thats all I ask from you
Ive gotta have your sweet inspiration
You know there just aint no tellin what a satisfied woman might do
The way you call me baby, baby
Is such a sweet inspiration
The way you call me darlin, darlin
Sets my heart to skating
And if Im out in the rain, baby
And in a bad situation
You know I just reach back in my mind
And there I find your sweet, sweet inspiration
Sweet inspiration
Oh, what a power
And Ive got the power
Every hour of the day
I need your inspiration
To go on, to go on living
To keep on giving this way
I need your sweet inspiration
Sweet inspiration, sweet inspiration, sweet inspiration
Sweet, sweet inspiration
Sweet, sweet inspiration
I need, sweet inspiration

Call Me Up In Dreamland
Well Ive tried and Ive tried
But the river seems so wide
And my head hurts and my hands are tied
And its so hard
When youre standing on the yard
Every time your number comes around
Call me up in dreamland
Radio to me man
Get the message to me
Anywhere you can
Let your river roll
Way down in your soul
Never to grow old
On a saxophone
From the airport to the plane
Way to the railroad train
Why dont we take it from the top
And start all over again
Every time you hear that whistle blow
You know you gotta put on your show
Every time your number comes around
Call me up in dreamland
Radio to me man
Get the message to me
Anywhere you can
Let your river roll
Way down in your soul
Never to grow old
On a saxophone
From the car to the bar
Why dont you pour it in a jar
Put a label on it
And send it off to the lost and found
You gotta get it in your brain
Before you go insane
Every time your number comes around
Call me up in dreamland
Radio to me man
Get the message to me
Anywhere you can
Let your river roll
Way down in your soul
Never to grow old
On a saxophone
Never to grow old
On a saxophone
Never to grow old
On a saxophone
Never to grow old
On a saxophone.

And I saw the sax line-up that he had behind him and I thought, I'm going to learn the saxophone. When I grow up, I'm going to play in his band. So I sort of persuaded my dad to get me a kind of a plastic saxophone on the hire purchase plan.

E: Simple
We've got it simple
Cause we've got a band
And we've got cymbals in the band
We've got it simple
Cause we've got a band
And we've got cymbals in the band
What is a band without cymbals?
Ooh ooh cymbals are grand
We've got a saxophone
Cause we've got a band
And we've got a saxophone in the band
We've got a saxophone
Cause we've got a band
And we've got saxophone in the band
What is a band without saxophone
Ooh ooh saxophone is grand
Cymbals and saxophones
Saxophones and cymbals (2x)
We've got Be-bop
Cause we've got a band
And we play Be-bop in the band
We've got skyscrapers
And it seems a pretty tune
Every band needs skyscrapers too
What is a band without skyscrapers
Ooh ooh skyscrapers is grand

4% Pantomime
The management said they were sorry
For the inconvenience you are suffering
And mr. booking agent, please have mercy
Dont book the jobs so far apart
We went up to griffith park
With a fifth of johnny walker red
And smashed it on a rock and wept
While the old couple looked on into the dark
Oh, richard, tell me if its poker
Oh, richard, tell me, whos got the joker and is it poker
Deuces wild, like an only child
Ill see what you got. how much is in the pot
You pay the tips and Ill collect the chips
Its a full house tonight -- everybody in town is a loser
Yeah, you bet
The dealers been dealing me bad hands
From the bottom of the deck without the slightest blush
And I dont know whether to call or check
But right now I feel like I got a royal flush
And my lady didnt show from frisco
But we had to go on with the show
Everybody got stoned -- it was a gas, it was a smash
Everybody got wrecked, checked. oh, oh, oh, oh.
Oh, belfast cowboy, lay your cards on the grade
Oh, belfast cowboy, can you call a spade a spade
Oh, richard, tell me, is the game poker
I cant understand who the fool is that holds this joker
Is it poker
Oh, belfast cowboy, lay your cards down on the table
Oh, belfast cowboy, do you think youre able

George Of The Jungle
George, george, george of the jungle
Strong as he can be
Ahhh
Watch out for that tree
George, george, george of the jungle
Lives a life thats free
Ahhh
Watch out for that tree
When he gets in scrapes
When he makes his escapes
With the help of his friend
An ape named ape
Then away hell schlep
On his elephant shep
While fella and ursula
Stay in step with
George, george, george of the jungle
Friend to you and me
Ahhh
Watch out for that tree
Watch out for that (ahhh) (oooh) tree
George, george, george of the jungle
Friend to you and me

Sweet inspiration
Through the nation
With elation for your love
Inspiration, sweet inspiration
Sweet inspiration
Through the nation
With elation for your love
Inspiration, sweet sensation
You really do something special to me
And theres nothing better
Than when youre lying in my arms
So glad we got together
I never needed nobody
Until you came along
And this feelings so strong
I should be working on something
But I aint got the time
Ive got you on my mind
Sweet inspiration
Baby youre my, sweet inspiration
Baby youre my, sweet inspiration
Baby youre my, sweet inspiration
The thought of you gives me butterflies
And I feel so happy
Whenever you reach out for me
This is how it should be
And Ive just got to be with you
Nothing else can compare
Just as long as youre there
And Ill never desert you
Cos you fill me with pride
Baby you changed my life
Sweet inspiration
Baby youre my, sweet inspiration
Baby youre my, sweet inspiration
Baby youre my, sweet inspiration
When I cant think clearly
Just one kiss is all I need
Then I look in your eyes
And I know, I know, I know, Im yours
Sweet inspiration
Through the nation
With elation for your love
Inspiration, sweet sensation
Sweet inspiration
Baby youre my, sweet inspiration
Baby youre my, sweet inspiration
Baby youre my, sweet inspiration

The Saxophone Song
Youll find me in a berlin bar,
In a corner brooding.
You know that I go very quiet
When Im listening to you.
Theres something very special indeed,
In all the places where Ive seen you shine, boy.
Theres something very real in how I feel, honey.
Its in me.
Its in me,
And you know its for real.
Tuning in on your saxophone.
Doo-bee-doo-bee-doo...
The candle burning over your shoulder is throwing
Shadows on your saxophone, a surly lady in tremor.
The stars that climb from her bowels,
Those stars make towers on vowels.
Youll never know that you had all of me.
Youll never know the poetry youve stirred in me.
Of all the stars Ive seen that shine so brightly,
Ive never known or felt in myself so rightly,
Its in me.
Its in me,
And you know its for real.
Tuning in on your saxophone.
Doo-bee-doo-bee-doo...
