The bill would ban human cloning, and any attempts at human cloning, for both reproductive purposes and medical research. Also forbidden is the importing of cloned embryos or products made from them.

There are two kinds of cloning right now. One is therapeutic cloning which is for coming up with cures for life threatening, really, really awful diseases. Then there is reproductive cloning, which is to make a human being out of your DNA and a donor egg.

In early January I introduced my legislation, which, besides prohibiting Federal funding of human cloning, also expresses the sense of Congress that foreign nations should establish total prohibition on human cloning as well.

The argument has been made in Congress that it is slippery slope if you allow therapeutic, what people people are calling therapeutic cloning, then you will get reproductive cloning.

Today, it is research with human embryonic stem cells and attempts to prepare cloned stem cells for research and medical therapies that are being disavowed as being ethically unacceptable.
We have no reason to think that human cloning will not work - it works in primates - but it may take many, many attempts.

We Do Not Own Nature
Of Nature's ways we will never be aware
If the World with her creatures we do not wish to share
We dispossess the birds and animals when we cut their trees down
To make more room for development on the outskirts of town
Despite the discovery of cloning and the advanced science of today
Extinction is forever and will remain that way
Human tampering with Nature is not a good thing
And the praises of such I for one cannot sing
Genetic modification of crops and the cloning of life forms should never take place
Human tampering with Nature is humanity's disgrace
Though many with what I say may well disagree
Leave Nature to Nature that's how it should be
We do not own Nature to her we belong
And if you feel differently you've got it wrong.

I don't believe that efforts to prohibit only so-called reproductive cloning can be successful.
If one is seriously interested in preventing reproductive cloning, one must stop the process before it starts.
In cloning, in contrast, reproduction is asexual - the cloned child is the product not of two but of one.
Human cloning is coming.

I've been opposed to human cloning from the very beginning.
Many other countries have already banned human cloning, and there are efforts at the UN to make such a ban universal.
While that amendment failed, human cloning continues to advance and the breakthrough in this unethical and morally questionable science is around the corner.

Friend
An old friend is like a golden trove
Melt him, whenever thou felt so
Wear him; or even tear him! I vow
Never does he lose his glow
Ever near to thou to distance every woe!
Call him a pal and clasp him in love
Or cast him off in unmindful shove
He stays within thou as another soul
Cloning bodies is a new found go
Cloning minds! Friends knew long long ago! !

Sonnet: Perils of Eugenics
Let man not play with chromosomes and genes
Of living creatures – animals, man, trees;
The risks of interference danger means,
Producing awry, bizarre forms with ease!
The human genome and of beasts though clear,
The harmony within is still secret;
Research, man delves in seems to go too near
The heart of creation by God pre-set.
The successes in cloning and stem-cell,
Goad scientists try experiments foolish;
The accidents, mishaps do always tell –
Man pays a price dear for being selfish!
Eugenics has perils unraveled not;
Man dare not alter clay make-up of ‘pot’!
