Malaysiana - The Malays

A rare gem sparkling in the Tropics
Longing to be appraised; a people of the Golden
Chersonese, their lingo so rich you can find
Strong traces of the whole world here!
Their land located on the crossroads between
The East and the West predestined to
Play cupid between the Orient and the
Occident, themselves the best examples
Of the romances of inter-racial nuptials,
The Malay features reflecting a rich
Variations of Arab, Thai, Indian, Chinese
As well as some Caucasian traits.
Hinduism, Buddhism and Islam successively
Swept through the archipelago, the nuances
Of which can be felt in the
Malay court rituals especially Hinduism
And Islam. The Malay people wondrusly pushed into
A wide array of world progresses and
Experiences that result in a race blessed
With a rich culture and language.
The Malay heart precipitates a dazzling
Tropical fusion tune chiming and tinkling
with varied scintillating cross cultural novelties

First Encounter - Ng Yen Yen

Ng Yen Yen
a character from my favourite
wang mei tiau movie?

The Tourism Minister Datuk Seri Ng Yen Yen reminds me of the characters in the Chinese period Wang Mei Tiau movies. Indeed she loves to wear a colourful shawl over her Kebaya (Malay influenced blouses with fine embellishment at the edges that accentuate the waist and long skirts. The women in Wang Mei Tiau Chinese period movies cover up their physiques, legs and hands included, in lengthy costumes. Wang Mei Tiau movies were a hit in the 60s and movies like Liang San Pe and Zhu Ying Tai and Hua Mulan are known all over the Chinese world. We met at a media dinner at the Royale Chulan Hotel in Kuala Lumpur in 2009 to introduce Jean Todt as an
ambassador of Tourism.

Chinese woman

When your eyes,
Meet mine,
You smile,
So fine.

The thought
Of being with you,
Excites me,
It’s all I wanna do.

Chinese woman,
I love you,
Chinese woman,
Why don’t you love me too?

Chinese woman,
Don’t go far away,
Chinese woman,
Why don’t you stay?

Every time,
You see me,
I try
to be funny.

I don’t understand,
You laugh and smile,
Yet I don’t hear from
You in a while.

Chinese woman,
I love you,
Chinese woman,
Why don’t you love me too?

Chinese woman,
Don’t go far away,
Chinese woman,
Why don’t you stay?

Days come
In and out.
Still I have
To shout.

Just so you
Look at me.
Just so you
Can see…

Chinese woman,
I love you,
Why don’t you love me too?

Chinese woman,
Don’t go away,
Why don’t you want to stay?

With me.
Chinese woman.

Walt Whitman

What Am I, After All?

WHAT am I, after all, but a child, pleas'd with the sound of my own
name? repeating it over and over;
I stand apart to hear--it never tires me.

To you, your name also;
Did you think there was nothing but two or three pronunciations in
the sound of your name?

Chinese Girls

(jack hues)
A star is shining
Into my eyes
It will not fall
A star is wise
Across the harbor
Perfumed hills
The silent waters
And all is still
Oh yeah
Chinese girls stand, see right through you
Chinese girls can sway
Chinese girls will melt your heart
And take your breath away
Chinese girls would dance with god
Chinese girls dont care
Put their hands around their heads
And through their chinese hair
She is not moving
She does not talk
Birds in her hair
Where she walks
And when she gazes
Theres a pearl
I will not forget
My chinese girl

One Similar Second

does the face
of every born child
in a similar second
vary because of
the minute space
each occupies
in the similar second?

does their life differ
because of the space
each of which carries
a different sun, moon,
and planet?

how much can a
second accommodate
in the creation of a planet?
two stones, a river, a mountain?
a single breath of god?
you find the answer in the faces
of all the children born in one
similar second

One Malaysia, One World

i say friend, look at the malay face
look at as many as possible
a wave of emotions
spilling from the mountains
and hills all over
so well blended they are
the real one malaysia brand

my friend, read through the malay scripts
a rain of tongues start falling from
mountains, hills, rivers, and shores
sanskrit, english, portuguese, germans
arabic, they inch their way from
some remotest part of history and world
they dance like the rarest form of dance
on the corridors of thoughts
a world language quietly taking root

Golu

ONCE I had a little sweetheart
In the land of the Malay,—
Such a little yellow sweetheart!
Warm and peerless as the day
Of her own dear sunny island,
Keimah, in the far, far East,
Where the mango and banana
Made us many a merry feast.

Such a little copper sweetheart
Was my Goln, plump and round,
With her hair all blue-black streaming
O'er her to the very ground.
Soft and clear as dew-dropp clinging
To a grass blade was her eye;
For the heart below was purer
Than the hill-stream whispering by.

Costly robes were not for Golu:
No more raiment did she need
Than the milky budding breadfruit,
Or the lily of the mead;
And she was my little sweetheart
Many a sunny summer day,
When we ate the fragrant guavas,
In the land of the Malay.

Life was laughing then. Ah! Golu,
Do you think of that old time,
And of all the tales I told you
Of my colder Western clime?
Do you think how happy were we
When we sailed to strip the palm,
And we made a lateen arbor
Of the boat-sail in the calm?

They may call you semi-savage,
Golu! I cannot forget
How I poised my little sweetheart
Like a copper statuette.
Now my path lies through the cities;
But they cannot drive away
My sweet dreams of little Golu
And the land of the Malay.

Chasing Behind What Has Gone

No time is there left for you to take,
To waste procrastinating which way...
Provides an easier taste of life.
That decision should have been made.
And you have discovered time doesn't wait.

Why you are baffled by this is no surprise.
And no longer can you find anyone,
To accomodate your point of view.
Those who have similar visions too,
Are chasing behind what has gone.

Those who have similar visions too,
Are chasing behind what has gone.

Those who have similar visions too,
Are chasing behind what has gone.

Chasing in a race...
For a time that has long moved on!

Lost in translation

At My favorite Chinese restaurant
The other day, I somehow got to thinking
about ethnicity

I wondered if there were Chinese Jews
So I asked my waiter
Explicitly:

“Do you have Chinese Jews? ”
I innocently asked
my Chinese waiter

“I don’t think so, I really don’t know,
But I’ll ask the manager and
Let you know later”

He returned in a while
And said with a smile
“no…No have Chinese Jews.”

I couldn’t believe it: a bazzillion people
No “Morrys“…“No Sheckys? ”
What astounding news! !

I queried him again
“could you check
Once more my friend? ”

He denied and replied,
“I regret to admit ItAnd don’t want
To offend

But what you ask for
Has us completely
Confused”

“So sorry to say… that for today
We have only: Grape..Orange…Tomato
and Prune Jews.”
