I had been in a film, playing a young British aristocrat. My wife told me that she was invited to a dinner and she invited me to dinner and the hostess had seen me and said, 'You cannot bring him.' but I think that I've done enough to shatter the image.

Whenever there were parties, I wasn't invited because I began to be like that character. In a way, that contributed to the success of the performance.

To go as fast as a friar that is invited to dinner.
The man of petty ambition if invited to dinner will be eager to be set next his host.

It is very vulgar to talk about one's business. Only people like stockbrokers do that, and then merely at dinner parties.

Chronicle of a strange Trollop
She invited them for the dinner.
Tom's a Mason, Dick a carpenter and Harry a painter.
When they finished the dinner,
Tom did some masonry,
Dick repaired her antique bed
And Harry painted the kitchen.
Their pretention looked as drunk
And want to stay the night it seems?
But when they see the one-eyed butcher at the back yard with a sharp knife
All greeted her politely and left the premises quietly.

Duet
Milestone:
All my troubles disappear,
When the dinner-bell I hear,
Over woodland, dale, and fell,
Swinging slow with solemn swell,---
The dinner-bell! the dinner-bell!
Hippy:
What can bid my heart-ache fly?
What can bid my heart-ache die?
What can all the ills dispel,
In my morbid frame that dwell?
The dinner-bell! the dinner-bell!
Both:
Hark!---along the tangled ground,
Loudly floats the pleasing sound!
Sportive Fauns to Dryads tell,
'Tis the cheerful dinner-bell!
The dinner-bell! the dinner-bell!

My parents used to throw great New Year's Eve parties. They invited such an eclectic mix of showbiz people. All those cool people were always hanging out at our apartment.

Un lucking the dream
Unlucking the dream
I stood straight
On the seashore
And knowing this
You invited me
For the dinner party
That I attended
And returned
Empty belly.

A person who happens by a neighbor's house at dinner time, and is invited to join the meal, does not swallow such large morsels as to break the string of pearls around his neck.
With a pass, no trespass
You saw me from the yard.
Then…
You greeted from the threshold.
Then…
You invited me to tea.
Then…
You served me dinner too.
Then…
No more call, I am at wait.
Only that much kind
Or only that much bold
You are, my dear!
All the time
I have entered with a pass.
In future too,
I shall not trespass.

Point Of View
Thanksgiving dinner's sad and thankless
Christmas dinner's dark and blue
When you stop and try to see it
From the turkey's point of view.
Sunday dinner isn't sunny
Easter feasts are just bad luck
When you see it from the viewpoint
Of a chicken or a duck.
Oh how I once loved tuna salad
Pork and lobsters, lamb chops too
'Til I stopped and looked at dinner
From the dinner's point of view.

Parting
We embrace.
Rich cloth under my fingers
While yours touch poor fabric.
A quick embrace
You were invited for dinner
While the minions of law are after me.
We talk about the weather and our
Lasting friendship. Anything else
Would be too bitter.

For years my wedding ring has done its job. It has led me not into temptation. It has reminded my husband numerous times at parties that it's time to go home. It has been a source of relief to a dinner companion. It has been a status symbol in the maternity ward.

Funny you mention my dinner parties when I have just suggested that inviting close friends over to share a meal with candlelight and wine at your table could be a form of religious experience for some people. To me it's a form of sacrament.
