We like Batman - we understand him, we suffer with him. On the other hand, we want to be Superman. But they're conflicting philosophies. Let's bring them together in one movie and see how we, as an audience, wrestle with our inner demons.

(Wish I Could Fly Like) Superman
WOKE UP THIS MORNING, STARTED TO SNEEZE
I HAD A CIGARRETE AND A CUP OF TEA
I LOOKED IN THE MIRROR, WHAT DID I SEE?
A NINE STONE WEAKLKING WITH KNOBLY KNEES
I DID MY KNEES BEND PRESS UPS TOUCH MY TOES
I HAD ANOTHER SNEEZE AND I BLEW MY NOSE
I LOOKED IN THE MIRROR AT MY PIGEON CHEST
I HAD TO PUT ON MY CLOTHES BECAUSE IT MADE ME DEPRESSED
SURELY THERE MUST BE A WAY
FOR ME TO CHANGE THE SHAPE I'M IN
DISSATISFIED IS WHAT I AM
I WANT TO BE A BETTER MAN
SUPERMAN SUPERMAN, WISH I COULD FLY LIKE SUPERMAN
SUPERMAN SUPERMAN, I WANT TO BE LIKE SUPERMAN
I WANT TO BE LIKE SUPERMAN
SUPERMAN SUPERMAN, WISH I COULD FLY LIKE SUPERMAN
WOKE UP THIS MORNING, WHAT DID I SEE?
A BIG BLACK CLOUD HANGING OVER ME
I SWITCHED ON THE RADIO AND NEARLY DROPPED DEAD
THE NEWS WAS SO BAD THAT I FELL OUT OF BED
THERE WAS A GAS STRIKE, OIL STRIKE, LORRY STRIKE, BREAD STRIKE
GOT TO BE A SUPERMAN TO SURVIVE
GAS BILLS, RENT BILLS, TAX BILLS, PHONE BILLS
I'M SUCH A WRECK BUT I'M STAYING ALIVE
HEY GIRL WE'VE GOT TO GET OUT OF THIS PLACE
THER'S GOT TO BE SOMETHING BETTER THAN THIS
I NEED YOU, BUT I HATE TO SEE YOU THIS WAY
IF I WERE SUPERMAN THEN WE'D FLY AWAY
I'D REALLY LIKE TO CHANGE THE WORLD
AND SAVE IT FROM THE MESS IT'S IN
I'M TOO WEAK, I'M SO THIN
I'D LIKE TO FLY BUT I CAN'T EVEN SWIM
SUPERMAN SUPERMAN, I WANT TO FLY LIKE SUPERMAN
SUPERMAN SUPERMAN, WISH I COULD FLY LIKE SUPERMAN

Superman
Woke up this morning, started to sneeze
I had a cigarette and a cup of tea
I looked in the mirror what did i see
A nine stone weakling with knobbly knees
I did my knees bend press ups touch my toes
I had another sneeze and i blew my nose
I looked in the mirror at my pigeon chest
I had to put on my clothes because it made me depressed
Surely there must be a way
For me to change the shape i'm in
Dissatisfied is what i am
I want to be a better man
Superman superman wish i could fly like superman
Superman superman i want to be like superman

Woke up this morning, what did i see
A big black cloud hanging over me
I switched on the radio and nearly dropped dead
The news was so bad that i fell out of bed
There was a gas strike, oil strike, lorry strike, bread strike
Got to be a superman to survive
Gas bills, rent bills, tax bills, phone bills
I'm such a wreck but i'm staying alive
[look in the paper, what do i see,
Robbery, violence, insanity.]
Hey girl we've got to get out of this place
There's got to be something better than this
I need you, but i hate to see you this way
If i were superman then we'd fly away
I'd really like to change the world

Song Of A Rebel
When I tell you that I love you
Always have in mind
That I am human
I do not have the power
To bring you some faraway
Stars to light
Your highness
Or dive the deepest oceans
To bring you the precious
Pearls
To adorn your
Royal ears
When I tell you I will care for you
Please understand
I am still on earth
Just like your other lovers
And friends
I experience the same pains
And joys
I carry with me common troubles
I am not superman or batman
I am and look at me as I am
Ordinary Human.
I am like the rest who also
Know how to love this country.
I have my own world too
And so when I say that I love you
And if you love me too,
Love me and the world that I carry
Love too my world
Love too my cause
Love too my rebellion.

My superman
My superman is strong and brave
He’s always there when I need to be saved
My superman is friendly and tall
He’s always saving my world and never does he fall
My superman’s always there day or night
He’s always fighting for what is right
My superman never gives up
Even in the hardest parts he’ll give more than enough
My superman flies so high
He takes it to the top all the way to the sky
My superman will always care
Because I trust him and know he’ll always be there

Very difficult to understand American audience, what they like, what they don't like. Some movie I like very much, it doesn't work. Some movie I don't like, it gets big box office. Very difficult.

Bruce Wayne is Batman. He became Batman the instant his parents were murdered. Batman needs Bruce, however hollow that identity feels to him from time to time. Bruce keeps Batman human.

Another Lot Of Things You Shouldn’t Do
Never date Wonder Woman
you will never know what she might do.
She could toss her golden lariat
and choke the truth out of you.
Never date Superman
when he asks you to take a flight with him.
He might dropp you
as he waves to the crowd below.
Never date Spiderman
on any given day.
He might leave dangling in his web
while he is called away.
Never date Batman
because you will never be alone.
He has always got a Robin
bobbing along behind.
Never ever date Dodgy Dave The Vicar
because he’ll preach all night to you
and just to top that
you’ll be chased by Vera with a rolling pin in hand.

Superman
I'm lookin' for someone who can made me feel
A serious love like Juliet's is real
A little impulsive and a boy at heart
A little bit shy but he'll be oh so smart
Superman I need a superman
You got a complicated girl like me
He's gotta be fair and treat me properly yeah
I want him to understand equality
You gotta Keep searchin' everywhere in the world
You gotta keep lookin' or you'll miss the feelin'
[CHORUS:]
You gotta be tough to make it today who
You do it your way and not how they say
You'll find him somewhere
You gotta be tough to make it today who
And never be scared of finding your way
to Superman
Should I call him on the telephone
Should I go seem him or just stay at home
will be different from the other boys
if I could find him I'd be overjoyed
Superman where are you Superman
Whenever it seems like everything's on the line
You gotta keep lookin' or you'll miss the feelin'
[CHORUS]
With all the other boys I never knew
what it took to make a choice
When he's mine I'm gonna stop
all my changin' around now
Between the two of us there'll be
enough goin' on that's serious
I can't wait 'til I can stop
all my lookin' around now
I found my Superman I found my Superman
Whenever it seems like everything's
on the line you gotta keep lookin' or
you'll miss the feelin'
[CHORUS]

About Superman and Batman: the former is how America views itself, the latter, darker character is how the rest of the world views America.

I like a movie that the audience actively has to participate in, and not just casually observe. Whatever my part in it, just as an audience member, I find that exciting.

As rewarding as a good film role can be, there is just nothing like getting up on a stage and taking an audience for a ride. You make a movie, and the audience may not see it for another 10 months. Here, you know immediately their reaction.

I don't think there has been any increase in sophistication in the audience. When people are aware of a concept that's easy to understand, and there's an actor who will attract them to the theater and it's a movie that's funny three-quarters of the time, it will be successful.

My book is very wild. But you know during the period of BATMAN, that there were thousands of Batman and Robin costumes sold and these weren't just for kids.
We work in an environment where your options are to do, you know, Batman 10, so when you get to do a movie that's a really great film like this, people really step up to the plate and enjoy it.

I think if the movie has resonance and stimulates the viewer to talk about it, you can have as large an audience as you want. The most important thing for me is that the movie exists. And that's success enough already.

In this drawing we just let our imagination run wild. We visualized Superman toys, games, and a radio show - that was before TV - and Superman movies. We even visualized Superman billboards. And it's all come true.
