I said to myself, I have things in my head that are not like what anyone has taught me - shapes and ideas so near to me - so natural to my way of being and thinking that it hasn't occurred to me to put them down. I decided to start anew, to strip away what I had been taught.

Lessons
Many things have been taught me
by teachers I have had.
But the one who taught me the most
was taught by you, my lad.
Facts and dates and figures
that at one time filled my head
don't have any importance now.
In fact they are mostly dead.
But you, my lad have taught me well
things I never knew.
I don't think I could ever forget them
nor will they ever be through.
They're more than facts or figures
or dates from long ago.
They're all about what makes you happy
and keeps your heart aglow.

Of All The Things
(dennis lambert / brian potter)
Of all the things Ive ever done
Finding you will prove to be
The most important one
I would never trade the tears
The conversation no-one hears
The learning how to walk before we run
Of all the kites I ever flew
Most came tumbling down
Except the one I sent up with you
I dont wanna change a thing
Break the spell
Cut the string
When every wish I made is coming true
With you
Sometimes I forget
To say how much I love you
Purposely I bet
cause Im so busy thinking of you
So, in this world of odds and ends
Id rather have a part of you
Than all of my so-called friends
You have taught me how to feel
What is false and what is real
Of all the things I ever wanna do
I think Ill start and end with loving you
Oh, you have taught me how to feel
What is false and what is real
Of all the things I ever wanna do
I think Ill start and end with loving you

Gunface
Gonna go downtown
Gonna get my gun
Gonna dress real sharp
Gonna beat my drum
I ain't gonna lie
Gonna walk so slow
Gonna talk just right
And my diamond ring
Gonna shine so bright
I ain't gonna lie
I've got a debt to repay
I ain't gonna cry
I put a gun in your face
You'll pay with your life
And I got my ears
And I got my eyes
And I got my narks
And my alibis
I won't waste your time
You made one false move
You made one mistake
When the juice is squeezed
That's the way it breaks
You'll pay for your crime
Your tongue lickin' way out of place
I'll rip it out
I'll stick a gun in your face
You'll pay with your life
I taught her everything I taught her how to dream
I taught her everything
I'm gonna teach her how to scream
I taught her all she knows
I taught her how to lie
I taught her everything
I'm gonna teach her how to cry
And you cause me hurt
And you cause me pain
And you turned the tap
On my burning rage
And I can't put it out
Gonna leave no sign
Gonna leave no trace
Gonna leave this town
In a state of grace
Give me the power
I got a debt to repay
I ain't gonna lie
I put a gun in your face
You'll pay for the crime
I taught her everything
I taught her how to speak
I taught her all she knows
I taught her how to eat
I half invented her
And now she acts so chic
I taught her everything
But now she's obselete
I taught her everything
How to read and write
I taught her all she knows
She was a neophyte
I taught her everything
I loved to watch her grow
I taught her everything
And now I want to see her go
I taught her everything
I got a debt to repay
I ain't gonna cry
I'll put a gun in your face
You're playing with your life
I taught her everything
I taught her how to cheat
I taught her all she knows
She was so indiscreet
I taught her everything
I taught her how to lie
I taught her everything
I'm gonna teach her how to cry

Taught To Fear And Suffer
Taught not born,
To hate.
Taught not born,
To fear.
Taught not born,
To discriminate.
And taught not born,
To jeer.
Taught not born,
To give.
Taught not born,
To take.
Taught not born to be of benefit to others.
But many bigots interfere...
With an infliction of their insecurities,
That smother one another.
Some are taught they are better than most human beings.
With a stunting of their own growth,
In isolated dreams.
And then their are those who confront others,
With obvious legitimate needs.
Ultimately to suffer from these misdeeds.
Taught not born,
To hate.
Taught not born,
To fear.
Taught not born,
To discriminate.
And taught not born,
To jeer.
Taught to greed selfishly!
Taught to deceive and steal like thieves!
And taught to cheat to succeed...
No matter who does the suffering and bleeds.
Taught to fear and suffer.
As a right,
To incite and ignite...
Fear.
As a right,
To incite and ignite...
Suffering,
Inflicted.
As a right to incite and ignite,
Fear!
Taught to fear and suffer.
As a right,
To incite and ignite...
Fear.
As a right,
To incite and ignite...
Suffering,
Inflicted.
As a right to incite and ignite,
Fear!

Instincts lead me
Winds sing; who taught them?
Rivers make paths; who taught them?
Infants cry; who taught them?
I learn other than what are taught.
What I learn other than what I was taught
Has led me to live where I live.

I was taught
As I sit here
thinking about all I was taught
the things we shared
the feeling of your hand will always be felt
on my body
the hunger for your touch
will lie in my heart
your kiss will always linger on my lips
I was taught
I was honored
I was respected
I was treated like an adult
not like a child
that doesn’t know what she’s doing
I will never be able to tell you how much that meant to me
thank you
are all the words my mouth can say

The Boss
(nickolas ashford/valerie simpson)
Fancy me
Thought I had my degree
In life and how love
Ought to be a run
I had a one step plan to prove it
Guide in my pocket for fools
Folly and fun
Love had to show me one thing
I was so right
So right
Thought I could turn emotion
On and off
I was so sure
So sure (I was so sure)
But love taught me
Who was who was who was the boss
(taught me who was who was the boss)
Id defy
Anyone who claimed that i
Didnt control whatever moved in my soul
I could tempt
Touch delight
Just because you fell for me
Why should I feel uptight
Love had to show me one thing:
I was so right
So right
Thought I could turn emotion
On and off
I was so sure
So sure (I was so sure)
But love taught me
Who was who was who was the boss
(taught me who was who was the boss)
Love taught me
Taught me
Taught me
Taught me
I was so right
So right
Thought I could turn emotion
On and off
I was so sure
So sure (I was so sure)

As Has Been Taught
From one's observance,
It can be determined...
A true placement of values.
And what is accepted,
Needs not to be assessed...
To point out to others.
Or be heard routinely expressed.
A true placement of values,
Has been obsessed.
And obvious it is...
Needing not to be excused or confessed.
Since if it was not wished it would not exist.
From one's observance,
It can be determined...
A true placement of values.
And what is accepted,
Needs not to be assessed...
To point out to others or be expressed.
It is what it is as has been taught,
To teach and be believed to label as is revealed.
As has been taught...
These things we see to leave as is believed,
To leave within our minds without questioning but accept.
As has been taught...
These things we see to leave as is believed,
To leave within our minds without questioning but accept.
As has been taught.
As has been taught.
As has been taught...
To leave within our minds without questioning but accept,
These things we see to leave as is believed...
As has been taught.
As has been taught.
As has been taught.

Tcepser (Unscramble The Word)
No-one fed me respect
It was all for me to predilect
And was the blood flowing in my veins
It is now a natural demenour with no strains
No-one taught me respect
It was all for me to adapt other than neglect
As a toddler
With all respect no-one taught me how to walk,
As teenager
No-one taught me how to make sense when I talk
I did not drink it from any dam
I did not digest it from any book
I did not observe it from any wise man
Because by birth I knew
That with esteem, comes self-esteem
That with respect, comes self-respect
No-one told me how to respect

Love Or Hate
so many children in this world
so many little boys and girls
going without food or love
this is'nt what god expected of us.
children are a blessed gift from god
thats how you and i got our start.
take your time and look at a child
let their innocence love fill your heart
then find their innocence and beauty within
for we are all born with first man's sin.
they was taught this at an early start
they was taught that they was different
and better than others.
and no other race.
are your sisters and brothers
don't fill your heart with bitterness and hate,
make the change in yoursef before its too late.
don't let it consume and steal your soul
for in the long run my friend, it will take its toll.
we have to show them that what
they was taught is wrong
and in this world it does'nt belong.
it is time to take a stand
so give of yourself all that you can.
you see hatred should be a thing of the past
while love and faith are the things that will last.

Dad Never Taught Me
Dad never taught me how to curse
And he never told us to gamble
He always warned cigarettes are worst
And never to waste food on the table.
Dad never taught us how to be idle
He was always a hardworking man at best
Taught us how to be responsible
And to face with Courage every test.
My Dad was not perfect but he taught well
I think that's the best he could leave
The lesson in life that really spell
How truly successful is a life well lived.

I Imagine
i imagine
you
thinking woman
your elbow
calloused
on the table
by so much
thinking
your legs
scarred
your bottoms
bothered
by innumerable
ideas
coming out
from your
head
like the
colored
sparks
of the fourth
of July
i imagine
you sitting
on your study
a heated
chair
a burning
table
a room
crowded
with a lot
of warring
ideas
a bed
not enticing
you to sleep
i imagine
you thinking
woman
scribbling
your poems
burning
a dozen
candles
i imagine
your fury
your disappointments
your disgrace
your fall
from their
grasp
the bump
of your head
on their
shallow waters
thinking woman
be pleased
in truth
i have not
offended you
all my hairs
have decided
to fall
on the floor
and my eyes
have lost
the need
for eyelids
and be happy
we still talk
in the lines
of this
unstoppable

Faith the Facts
Search out all things of good report.
Consider each one carefully,
things are not always as you thought.
As you will find most probably.
What you were taught to be the truth
is very often far from true.
Lessons taught you in your youth
by those you thought knew more than you.
As you mature you learn to see.
They taught you their own biased view
Which you examine critically
And then discard most as untrue.
Your old beliefs grow obsolete.
Examine all the evidence
New facts emerge though incomplete,
you then accept what makes most sense.
What you were taught no longer true.
You can’t rely on faith alone.
Although the clergy urge you to
Because too much remains unknown

A New Pilgrimage: Sonnet X
Whence is our pleasure in things beautiful?
We are not born with it, we do not know,
By instinct of the eye or natural rule,
That naked rocks are fairest, or flowers blow
Best in their clefts, or that the world of snow
Has other glory than of cold and ice.
From our mother's hand we viewed these things below
Senseless as goats which browse a precipice,
Till we were taught to know them. With what tears
I con the lessons now I learned so well,
Of mountain shapes, from those dead lips of hers;
And as she spoke, behold, a miracle
Proving her words,--for at our feet there grew,
Beauty's last prodigy, a gentian blue.
