Richard E. Grant

My father died prematurely at the age of 52 when I was 24, and it is a recurring regret that he never lived to see me succeed beyond university and drama.

Death and Life

when we die we would be
shoved out of this body into
another plane, something else
it can be quite frightening
the hands of of nature
that work between the known, unknown
but then so what? we never are our own thing
nature never means us to be in control of ourselves
we are always somebody else's
father, mother, the Divine
in between the known, unknown
belief and make belief we plod on
to put sanity into place,
a recurring drama, a sea of waves
sweeping over us, never waking us up

Dirty Jobs

How unpredictable is
This whole dirty enterprise!
From the day I first saw a snake,
The sight that broke
My shells prematurely,
I dreaded a death
By being eaten by it.
Now, see what was in store for me.
Before long, I was
Made to eat a snake and died.
Quite prematurely.
What a terrible blow
I had from world’s dirty job!

Homo Erectus

(kinky friedman & panama red)
I left barber college
Searchin for knowledge,
Went to the university.
I must confess, sir
This lady professor
She turned me on to anthropology.
Now Im a homo erectus
Got to connect this
Bone that I discovered yesterday.
Tyrannosaurus
Lived in the forest,
Died because its heart got in the way.
Dear doctor howard
Come down from your tower
And join me for lunch at the y.
Although youre thirty
I still think youre pretty
Lets give it that good ole college try.
cause Im a homo erectus
Got to connect this
Bone that I discovered yesterday.
Tyrannosaurus
Lived in the forest,
Died because its heart got in the way.
Ok!
Hey jomo kenyatta
No, no, youre not a
Australopithecine boogieman.
Its took us a jillion
But were all still here, been
Boogeyin since boogeyin began.
And Im a homo erectus
Got to connect this
Bone that I discovered yesterday.
Tyrannosaurus
Lived in the forest,
Died because its heart got in the way.
You know Im a homo erectus
Got to connect this
Bone that I discovered yesterday.
Tyrannosaurus lived in the forest,
Died because its heart got in the way.
You know that Im a homo erectus
Got to connect this
Bone that I discovered yesterday.
Tyrannosaurus
Lived in the forest,
Died because its heart got in the way.
Im but a homo erectus
Got to connect this
Bone that I discovered yesterday.
Tyrannosaurus
Lived in the forest,
Died because its heart got in the way.
Watch out for homo erectus ...

A Life Is Lived The Way It Is Lived

A LIFE IS LIVED THE WAY IT IS LIVED

A life is lived the way it is lived
I did what I did
And made mistakes
Maybe most of it was a mistake
I don’t know.

I told myself always
The one thing I would never do
Is regret.
Regrets I don’t have
But the tone of regret now touches all I do
And some deep sadness says
‘I should not have failed so much.’

G-d who gave me this one life
And so much time
And so much opportunity
G-d who gave me my chance truly.

Can I blame You,
If I did not make it?

About Bob

when you stole father's house
we did not mind
nothing will be lost
you just took your ride
gallop in the air
and then when the excitement
was over
you returned it somehow
without questions
we accepted the
self that you are

now you are the summit of your
success
perhaps that ride of the horse
gave you that feeling
that you are bound for the
greatness in
the clouds where you now
live

we never regret
you thief
you stole the dreams
and lived it

that horse died
dreams don't

Avoid Drama

There’s drama in everyone life
Everyone bring around a little baggage with them
The husband and the wife
Probably complaining about someone they don’t really like
It sort of weird you see
There’s so much wrong, and I could be right
Even I have a little drama about me

Baby daddy drama – I hate it all
Parents saying I didn’t do enough with my life
Second older sister took a fall
Oldest sister is now a wife
Youngest sister is not so well
Baby father is no where around
Only time can tell
He’s no where insight to be found

Avoiding drama may come easy for some, and others not
The struggles of life pops up in a while
It isn’t all that
Worries take over- not even a smile
There’s so much drama
I can’t even avoid it all
Baby daddy, ex- girlfriend drama
It’s all I use to think about
Why you have to leave your baby mama?

I find it hard to avoid drama
There are drama queens
The baby daddy and the baby mama
The adults and the ex-girlfriends in there teens
The husband cheating on his wife
He causing problem
And messing up his life
Dramas is all around us
It comes out
And hurt us

Dramas
Avoiding it
Dramas
Running away from it
It will come back in a way
And messes with our head
Avoiding drama, it couldn’t be okay

How Do Prepare For The Coming Famine?

i like the way my father and mother
once lived.

they died with all serenity, and there
was this banquet we tendered, before
each passed away, as though
there is nothing to worry

they danced their days, their entrance
of course was silent, and their exits
a little serene, and then we talk as
though we understand how to live
just like them

there were droughts but father knew
how to store water in the house and
each of us had its own fill of our thirts

there were past hungers but mother
has her own skill of using the knife
in cutting each share each piece to
be nibbled by our mouths

and now, we are left here my brothers
and sisters, warned about an incoming famine
let us remember how it was with father and mother
and grandfather's father:

when life was so simple then
when there was hunger and yet none died of hunger
when there was drought and yet each of us has a glassful of water
when there was crisis, yet each had symbiosis

Day That I Die

One day I woke up woke up knowing today is the day I will die
Cashdogg was barking went to the park and enjoyed that one last time
Called my mother told her I loved her and begged her not to cry
Wrote her a letter that said Id miss her and signed that goodbye...
You know the happiest day of my life
I swear the happiest day of my life is the day that I die
(the day that I died)
Can you feel the cold tonight?
(the day that I died)
It sets in but its alright
(the day that I died)
Darkness falls Im letting go
(the day that I died)
All alone but I feel fine
We took a drive and we drove thru d.c.
To see the places we lived, long conversations
We talked of old friends and all the things that we did
Summer nights, drunken fights
Mistakes we made...did we live it right?
You know the happiest day of my life I swear the happiest day of my life
Is the day that I died
(the day that I died)
Can you feel the cold tonight?
(the day that I died)
It sets in but its alright
(the day that I died)
Darkness falls Im letting go
(the day that I died)
All alone but I feel just fine
You know the happiest day of my life
I know the happiest day of my life
I swear the happiest day of my life is the day that I died
(the day that I died)
Can you feel the cold tonight?
(the day that I died)
It sets in but its alright
(the day that I died)
Darkness falls Im letting go
(the day that I died)
All alone but I feel just fine
Did I live it right?
I hope I lived it right
I hope I lived it right, I know I lived it right
Did I live it right?
I hope I lived it right, I know I lived it right

Looking back, nostalgically

The dreaming spires of Oxford lie
beneath an ever changing sky
A place where students aspire to
the earning of a sporting blue.

Or concentrate their energy
towards a double first degree
Some will succeed and make their mark.
To others just a youthful lark

An honoured university
which has been here for centuries
The town and gown oft disagree
they co exist uneasily

The students come from far and wide
to study by this riverside.
They stay here temporarily.
Then they must move on hopefully.

They leave the dreaming spires behind
as they strike out and try to find.
Some way to make their dreams come true
Some will succeed the elite few
.
On leaving university
you have to face reality.
The dreaming spires reluctantly
must be consigned to memory.

There is so much they need to learn.
As everybody must in turn,
success does not come easily.
Degrees provide no guarantee.

Now is the time when you must show
How much or little that you know.
Demonstrate your ability
and your adaptability..

Convince employers that you can
Do just as well as any man.
Although you lack experience
you have expressed a preference

by choosing them to apply to.
You like the kind of work they do.
If you survive the interview
and they decide to employ you.

Your years at university
As you will very quickly see
have not prepared you to compete.
Your dancing to a different beat.

You have signed on to the Rat race.
The city is a different place
From Oxford and its dreaming spires
where scholars pursue their desires.

All that counts here is success
you have work hard to progress.
Life here is lived by different rules
the city has no time for fools.

You must produce results it seems
If you want to fulfil your dreams.
Although in truth you’d rather be
back at your university.

The dreaming spires of Oxford lie
beneath an ever changing sky.
They do not change, no reason to.
Unlike the students who must do.

A Tribute To My Revered Father

My Father was a great teacher,
Good husband to my good Mother;
He taught his pupils very well;
In an old house, did he dwell.

Well he reared his children seven!
Lived for up to eight times ten;
His forehead sweat fell on the soil;
My Father so well, did he toil.

A man who possessed great talents;
And honesty par excellence;
Cheap Politics did he eschew;
This world hath seen but very few.

He lived in humble conditions;
A law-abiding citizen;
He gave us good education;
And raised us well in religion.

He’as born and bred in piety;
And rose in popularity;
A logic-man, Philosopher;
None could him well decipher.

A versatile man, Orator;
He tried to make a new order;
Oppressed, he died with plenty peace;
Yet in god, he lived in ease.

His learning to him was his wealth!
Together with his body’s health;
And she was great too, my Mother;
Who well-supported my Father.

A human ‘immortal’-being!
With yeoman-service worth seeing;
He loved the poor and downtrodden;
That fetched him place sure in Heaven.

But one day when he died, I cried!
By Heaven’s words, he did abide;
God-fearing, undaunted, he left;
For his great soul, a lot I wept.

I see him as a bright new Star!
In the night-Sky clearly, afar;
Oh what a great man Father was!
Truthfulness was his greatest cause.
Fondly dedicated in loving memory of my beloved father

The Wish For Violence....

a boring day
calls for a drama

push a button
drama unfolds

a man with a black robe
appears from the left nook

kills a child lost from the
south side

and then runs away

at night you
regret having pushed that button

simply to
take away that boredom

you wished
for violence....

Farmer's unlettered wife laments

She lives in a remote village with her one and only daughter.
Her epileptic husband died a long ago,
Then the child was just completed five years.
'Oh! The University, it seems close to universe.
I have never seen such a place even in my faded dreams.
So my darling daughter you have already packed everything and leaves soon.
I am not worried about me.
While you learn many things of the cruel World, I am sure there won't be a single blank page in your heavy books for the orphan shepherd boy to make a pastel drawing.
He too run away like your kind father.
Though I am a simpleton my dear, that I could predict well.'

* To my loving deceased mother, her unaccomplished dream is that one of her children would be enrolled to an university some day. Mom! I am sorry but I learned to draw a black face with white paint and vice versa in the life-school.

I Believe in Myself

I believe in God
I believe in myself regardless of what others say

I love myself
I believe in things that others would not believe

I am not insane, but intelligent
I know and feel in my heart that anything can be possible
I never give up even when it feels impossible

I will succeed
I will succeed

No one can take away my pride but me

I will succeed
I will succeed
Just you wait and see

My Father Died

In the middle of the summer,
when I was twenty-two
and wore sneakers with no socks
and was growing my first beard,
my father died.

In the middle of the summer,
when my son was one years old
and lay in his playpen
in the hardscrabble grass of the backyard,
making living sounds
and grabbing for fistfuls of air,
my father died.

In the middle of the summer,
days before somebody walked on the moon,
days after the bright-colored beginnings
of my daughter's life,
my father died.

In the middle of the summer,
when, as a father,
I first sat out on the porch past midnight
listening to the haunting, faraway comfort
of late-night, west coast ball games,
and the tender wisps of breathing of my own two babes,

in the middle of the summer
when I first had trouble sleeping,
and before we had the luxury to know
each others' hurts and hollows,
hopes and heartaches,

in the summer of 1969
(several sad and sorry seasons
beyond the end of his living) ,
my father died.

As did,
as did a part of his boy.
