I feel as though my career really hit its high point when I was cast as a supporting actress in 'American Wedding'. I thought the script had a lot of depth and intelligence, and it really just jumped off the page.

Poems get to the point where they are stronger than you are. They come up from some other depth and they find a place on the page. You can never find that depth again, that same kind of authority and voice. I might feel I would like to change something about them, but they’re still stronger than I am and I cannot.

I wrote the script of Patton. I had this very bizarre opening where he stands up in front of an American flag and gives this speech. Ultimately, I was fired. When the script was done, they hired another writer and that script was forgotten.

Beautiful girl (a reply to Octavio Paz)

Beautiful girl staring out of the page
of a magazine, your perfect body
is cast in lovely rounded lines

with a ravishing smile that catches the eye
of most men, how easily did you cast
your web over me, before I turned the page.

Yet I know you in touch and flesh
and have stroked your blonde hair
and at times read the sadness
hidden behind your charm

and know how you battled life
to find a way to care
when intelligence and education
couldn’t pay for raising
the two children that you love.

Spicy With A Little Bit Of Raunch

I am not a rumor.
Nor am I a page from a script,
To overdo as rehearsed.

I am who I am with no excuses,
To create on the spot or make up...
With a hiding of my flaws.

I have been through too much in my life,
To solicit from anyone an attention to me given.
I am motivated and obsessed by initiative I can't rid.

I am not a rumor.
Although some told on me I have heard are very good.
Spicy with a little bit of raunch.
Nor am I a page from a script.
I live to adventure and not to be limited.
And rehearsed?
I offend too many who are pretentious.

Your Intelligence

Isn't intelligence sexy?
I don't just mean cognition
I mean emotional depth
Humor, spiritual wit and dynamics
Computers are logical
Babes your like a ocean
I am diving for Your eggs
Trying to feel your rationality
Analyzing your nuances
Seeing your masks melt

I love the way you hide behind silk
Stockings around my head won't stop me
Your heart and soul needs love
Her high heels like 5 inch fire
Garter belts wet with clover fields
I march like Napoleons army
Love calls me to your fears
The moon is so smart
Your games are like sharks
Your intelligence as sexy as a whip

One Day A Hungry Fox

One day, a hungry fox,
Saw a high vineyard.
It was full of sweet grapes,
He might not have, he feared.

They were hanging in such
A height, that he jumped
And jumped, but couldn't get.
He had to remain starved,

Again he jumped, and jumped,
And went on jumping ever.
But all his efforts were in vain,
He failed to touch that cluster.

Being upset, he got angry
As he wasted his hour.
Before leaving out of pain,
He said--Grapes are very sour!

Policies Allowed

Your policies allowed,
Those 'crazed' to be praised.
With no depth to be appraised,
As consciousness raising.
With no sign anywhere,
That respects intelligence.

And this is 'not' a criticism.
Nor an embellishment of fact.
These comments are made,
From a focused observantion.
And exposed are pretentions...
Successfully charaded,
To masquerade.

When corners are left,
To collect the settling of dust.
And a crust from rust...
Is anxiously swept under a rug,
With a practiced thrust.
There is unsurmountable trouble that exists.

And it should not be offensive to mention this.
If those who clean claim they have worked,
To the extreme.

Lips are quick to lie in high places!

Your policies allowed,
Those 'crazed' to be praised.
With no depth to be appraised,
As consciousness raising.
With no sign anywhere,
That respects intelligence.

Actress

Some day I'm going to grow up
And be every man's dream
Some day I'm going to grow up
And forget this sad little me
I'm going to shine in the spotlight
Wear sexy clothes
Be somebody everybody wants to meet
And no one ever really knows
No one will ever know me
I'm an actress through and through
And to my bones
I'm an actress through and through
And to my bones
Critics will adore me
At least they will at first
But you see I already know this
So it can't never really hurt
And if it does, I'm an actress
I'll play it nonchalant
In the total scheme of things it's insignificant
(sure I can take the knocks)
Cause I'm an actress through and through
And to my bones
I'm an actress through and through
And to my bones
I may not be that pretty now
But who's the referee
Standards of beauty
Will be redefined because of me
And then they'll be the scandals
Everywhere my name
Men will jump from balconies
And I'll just shrug and take the blame
(yeah, they'll say I died for love)
Cause I'm an actress through and through
And to my bones
Well, I'm an actress through and through
And to my bones
My acceptance speech will be a milestone
Never will such a star
Have ever graced the microphone
And of course I'll thank my agent
The way they always do
Though I could have done it without him
And that goes for the Academy too
And the makeup people and the lighting designers and everybody else
Cause I'm an actress throughand through
And to my bones
I'm an actress through and through
And to my bones
I'm an actress yeah, yeah, yeah
I'll be gracious to the lesser stars
And generous to the unknowns
And if another actress threatens
My position on the throne
Well, I don't know exactly what I'll do
I don't exactly know
But I know that it could turn into
One of my most poignant roles
Everyone will have their handkerchiefs out
And they'll have to leave the theater early
And then they'll go home
And what'll they do?
They'll have a big glass of alcohol
Cause I'm an actress through and through
And to my bones
And if I make it to the top I won't be overthrown
I'm an actress ah, yeah, yeah

0296 Casting for a new production

The second act went really well tonight,
pity it’s so near the end of the run,
it’s good enough for a West End transfer;
they’re a good bunch when we work together

no thanks, not tonight old man –
got some TV ad lines to learn,
well it’s good money for old rope…
seeyer chizmate

make-up off, stage door chat –
after a good perf., who wants to pub it,
hear yet again about how they triumphed together
in Romeo and Juliet god how many years ago
looking at them now – obscene..

*

When people used to tell me
how old people sat lost to the world
in a golden haze of memory,
I used to think
borING..! not me, not on your life…

but it’s not quite like that:
a touch of unexpected thought
may clothe loved actors in a new-stitched garb –
before you took the stage and they
were cast by you as your supporting roles –

they too were Romeo and Juliet,
throwing the curtains open on their red-eyed dawn…
and you, not even yet the twinkle
in the future’s eye…
they’d played the serving-maid, the page,
the jaunty clown, the flirt, the on-off, bright-eyed savagery -
the toilers in the burning, dusty sun,
the heroes in a life of war and peace,
had hopes you never knew or asked,
and then, invited you to join their cast…

these were such unknown people, just
as unimportant as you are seen as, now…
but loved, by those you never knew or thought of…

now, in your lean and slippered age
you can re-read their lines,
these fellow actors whom you thought
because they loved you, that you were their life…
now, as you re-write the stories of their lives,
cast them as beloved strangers

Proper And/Or Acceptible Public Etiquette!

I try to release from my consciousness,
Those painful images fixed...
We all can say we survived,
But still live with.

And the only time I am reminded I have them...
Is when someone says,
I should raise and not lower my head...
To quicker dry those tears I cry!
And to wear a smile on my face instead.
With no clue...
Or point of reference,
From which I feel such depth!
Coming as it does...
When it happens,
Delivered from my point of view.

And I do my best not to express...
That these are 'my' heartfelt agonies.
When upon me,
They choose to come to visit!

And not one moment am I in thought...
With wishes to entertain,
Proper and/or acceptible public etiquette!

I have friends, African American actors, who've had more of a struggle; hopefully they're starting to see some air and light now. But in my directing career, in my acting career, in my producing career, I haven't been bound by a lot of limitations. When I first started doing these kinds of unique characters, these diverse characters, there was hardly anybody doing them. So I had this open road.

Life is Fine

I went down to the river,
I set down on the bank.
I tried to think but couldn't,
So I jumped in and sank.

I came up once and hollered!
I came up twice and cried!
If that water hadn't a-been so cold
I might've sunk and died.

But it was Cold in that water! It was cold!

I took the elevator
Sixteen floors above the ground.
I thought about my baby
And thought I would jump down.

I stood there and I hollered!
I stood there and I cried!
If it hadn't a-been so high
I might've jumped and died.

But it was High up there! It was high!

So since I'm still here livin',
I guess I will live on.
I could've died for love—
But for livin' I was born

Though you may hear me holler,
And you may see me cry—
I'll be dogged, sweet baby,
If you gonna see me die.

Life is fine! Fine as wine! Life is fine!
