It's funny, to me, the way people refer to childbirth as a miraculous event. A miracle is something that defies nature. Only, childbirth has got to be the most natural thing in the world. Top three anyway. But, on the other hand, when you think about it, there's really no other word that fits. Sperm. Egg. A coincidental meshing of genetic information that will grow something that could write an opera or cook up some Napalm. It blows my mind.

A pregnant woman is not afraid if you threaten her with what you made her pregnant with.
There was something to me that was really compelling about that woman, already knowing she couldn't get pregnant. When I made that movie I was maybe 24, and to be 24 and already know you can't get pregnant, that was really interesting to me.

She who is pregnant, is pregnant-even though she wrap herself in an 'mkaja'.
It is true that the movie is perhaps my most politically-charged. The story is thrust into motion by the idea of what do you do when your 13 year old daughter comes home pregnant. And not only is she pregnant, but she wants to keep the baby.

I think it affected me physically and emotionally, yes. I did have my ups and downs, but I actually had more ups and downs after the shots were finished and she was pregnant because of the reality of being pregnant with twins.

Holy Matrimony
God made Adam – the first ‘he’,
From clay of earth,
And blew His breath.
God found him lonely;
He needed a mate;
It was not late.
So, He made Eve – the first ‘she’!
From Adam’s rib;
She looked lovely!
They ate the fruits
In Garden of Eden,
And lived quite happily!
But came satan
In serpent form,
And lied to Eve.
Eve ate the fruit
That God forbade
Committing sin.
She gave to Adam,
Who also ate:
Changed mankind’s fate!
God drove them both
Out of Eden
As rod forev’r.
God’s curse on Eve
–to suffer pain
of childbirth!

–to labor hard,
