Sun Tzu

It is essential to seek out enemy agents who have come to conduct espionage against you and to bribe them to serve you. Give them instructions and care for them. Thus doubled agents are recruited and used.

Vain

At one time I thought self publishing so vain,
but now I have done it a couple of times
I am not so sure anymore.
In the past, some great writers have done it.

They used to call it vanity publishing,
but they do not call it that anymore.
My first venture was to ensure a copywrite on a poem
some people kept trying to claim as their own.

My second effort was never meant for sale,
but done as a gift for two close friends.
Something that holds a little bit of me
whenever I am not around them.

My third effort has for far too long
lain on my shelf gathering dust.
However, at the time of writing it
everyone said this was going to be the one.

Sadly, at the time Agents and Publishers
would not entertain my humble work.
Now twenty-one years later
we will see who was right or wrong.

Those who enjoyed reading it
or the Agents and Publishers who declined it.
Am I vain or Am, I suffering from belief?
Only time can tell.

I submitted manuscripts to publishers. This was not so much a feeling that I should be published as a wish to escape the feared and hated drudgery of normal work.

As a writer, you can't allow yourself the luxury of being discouraged and giving up when you are rejected, either by agents or publishers. You absolutely must plow forward.

What They Will Say

Some times, I wonder if I write for the future.
That may seem like a strange statement to make.
Forty-three years ago, I wrote a poem
that at the time no one wanted to know.
Now it is my best-loved poem
read by countless people around the world.
Thirty years ago, I wrote two poems
and each one won me an award,
but at the time I wrote them,
no one wanted to know.
All of which makes me wonder
if what I wrote in my yesteryears
that then none wanted to know.
Could they all be popular now?
Today I started collecting and retyping
short stories I wrote twenty years ago.
At the time, publishers and agents
didn’t want to know.
Now twenty year on
I am wondering what they will say.

A typical agent in New York gets 400 query letters a month. Of those, they might ask to read 3-4 manuscripts, and of those, they might ask to represent 1.

Epistle to NP Van Wyk Louw

I see the wise old man
pacing his study
with a hot fire raging in the fireplace,
where manuscripts lie disorderly,
in an order that only makes sense to him,

reading verses of other poets,
always searching for something
like a religious fanatic searches for truth,

helping other poets, like the great mentor
(that he still is after his demise)
writing exceptionally great poems,
believing that a poet
is someone like a prophet, a kind of saint
who searches both for truth
and expresses the abyss,

knowing that poetry is no struggle,
that the words, the structure to them
comes by itself as if given
like a communication
received from the gods

with the evangelistic advise
to rather examine
from which spirit
the inspiration comes.
