I think technique can be taught but I think the only way to learn to write is to read, and I see writing and reading as completely related. One almost couldn't exist without the other.

Learning language

Hear and hear to learn hearing.
Speak and speak to learn speaking.
Read and read to learn reading.
Write and write to learn writing.
They are four ways traffic.

Jonathan Kozol

In the book, I write about children in first grade who were taught to read by reading want ads. They learned to write by writing job applications. Imagine what would happen if anyone tried to do that to children in a predominantly white suburban school.

It Is Me

He sat in his own world
writing down the stories
that came to his mind.
He never watched time,
for him there
was no time.

He wrote stories of love,
of mystery and suspense.
He wrote of everything
that popped into his head.
He was not a lonely person
as his characters kept him company.

He wrote things
for every writing sphere,
but there was one thing
he could not write
which may come as a surprise
to everyone.

He could not write a letter
no matter how hard he tried.
His mind went completely blank
whenever he tried.
Yet he could write
just about everything else.

He could write songs,
he could write stories at will.
He could write poems
on everything,
but writing a letter
was something he could not do.

Now all who read this
might take it as a joke,
but it is very true
every word I have spoke,
and how would I know that.
The answer is simple it is me.

On Books

Books are my first love, I’m so proud to read;
They give me knowledge and help life to lead;
Hours, days just pass by, by reading life-time;
Life would not be worth, if not for my rhyme.

Great are those people who write books all life;
Burning just candles, with Goose-quills in strife;
Tired of writing though day-long or night,
They keep on writing in such a bad light.

Books serve a great cause; their value can’t cease;
It takes years to write but reading is ease;
Book-makers struggle to print a few books;
And keep spending time to, improve their looks.

Some find their way to libraries in town;
Some remain untouched and nev’r taken down;
Silver-fish, Moths eat the books that are old;
Some are gone obsolete, some sold like gold.

Some are in tatters and must be rebound;
Books are Man’s best friends where solace is found;
Reading for long hours, does help you to learn;
Books give much knowledge and wisdom to men.

Read books with great care whose weight is in gold;
Serve generations though they may be old;
Source of much Info, deserving respect;
Books are life-partners whom you ne’er reject!

A Love To Read

Is it a misconception,
That writers read...
Other writers' works?

Or reads extensively at all?

Afterall...
When would a true writer,
Find time to get that done...
If one has a love to read?

And...
I am not that one to say,
A reading AND a writing done...
Is an impossibility.
Because I read what I write often.
Regularly and on a daily basis.

To be a writer

They say, when you have nothing to say
Do not say anything
They say when you have nothing good to say
Do not say anything
He is not convinced
He wants to be a writer and to be one he must write
What is in his mind
To be a writer he must write and write and write
Even when there is nothing to write
Even when there is nothing to say even when nobody listens
Even when the word is dead even when there is no sense at all
Even when he gets blind and deaf and mute even when his fingers are cut even when his mind is blank even when his consciousness is lost
Even when you are angry even when you say what is written is nothing
But trash, dung, cadaver, corpse, poo, pee, even when there is nothing
Anymore,
He writes because he is a writer and no one can stop him now.
he is
he is writing
he is writing always
he is writing always whatever that needs to be written

and here you are foolishly reading. thanks to you, audience of one.

The Interpretation Of The New More Elaborate Story

To be read is to be interpreted.
By someone, somewhere.
With glassy eyes they do stare and compare.
A comparison can sometimes be seen as a disrespect in manner of speaking.
Better yet impersonating it with your own thoughts, with your own words, your own feelings could cause some to become enraged.
But isn't that what writing is?
An inspiration.
Shouldn't that make original writer proud.
Original being not as original as one thinks.
For they also got it from somewhere.
Words aren't just strung together and make sense.
If they were we would all do it.
An artist must first see something visually to paint a picture.
But how did he learn how to paint in the first place?
He started out by mimicking someone else.
Then he found his own technique.
His own style completely unique.

That Spot....

this is a blank slate.
when i write some words on it
and you begin to read each
something really happens
though you do not know it
because you are too busy with
the reading of the word

either a part of me dies or lives
it depends on where you stop
and when

tomorrow i shall write again
you must learn where you stopped and
when.

it is that precise moment
that you make me begin to write again.

Let The Gift Flow

your potential
is brilliant,
realized is one

of your exceptional
poems, subtle changes
are a development

in technique tone;
remember
time rich patience

is frustrating
awaited sometimes
necessary,

added depths
will come naturally
if not forced

with experience,
which means
years of writing...

exceptional
cannot be learned,
exceptional

is, no time limit,
old young, talent
recognizes

no age barriers
poet greatest fan
be still patient,

let the gift flow;
write when you feel good,
exhausted writing

is ok when on a roll,
but tired ill bored drained
when starting produces

flat convoluted writing
instead write rolling thunder
write universal wonder

To be good is a technique.

Man’s business in the world is to exist;
To be good is also a technique worth.

Man’s caution in his action is safety;
To be nice is a technique well suited.

Man’s purpose in life is to have a mate;
To be kind is a technique well employed.

To be good is no more a sacrifice,
But a means adopted to stay afloat.

The rose has developed a way to thrive,
Other than the one pursued by the cactus.

She Is Sleepless, She Is Probing

They read your lines
They perhaps like you
They try to read you
In between
she is sleepless
And she pities you
she is probing
And she writes for you too
And you feel so honored

Comes our arrogance
You say you write
Only for yourself
For art’s sake
You say you cannot
Write for no other
You say you cannot
Stop writing
Your essence is just that
To write for no other

To write or you die

Be kind
Let them read you through the night
Let them follow you
Warn them though
They may have followed
A blind man eking his way through
His darkness

Without even a cane to feel his way.

The Virgin Mary
And Veronica
The crying mother
And the cloth to wipe a bloody face

Don’t stretch further
There is no Christ in me.

I Couldn't Say Goodbye

I watch you as you're sleeping
As I'm standing at the door
I don't want to let you go
But I can't hold on anymore
I just can't find the strength
To say I'm leaving you
It's over now, it's over now
And there's nothing I can do
I couldn't say goodbye
Couldn't stand the pain
Couldn't watch you cry
Knowing that your heart would break
So I let you sleep
Till the morning light
When you wake up and you read the note I write
Telling you that I
I couldn't say goodbye
I'm walking down this rainy street
Thinking you're awake by now
As you read my letter
And the tears fall from your eyes
Just know I tried to make it work
It just wasn't meant to be
I needed you, I needed you
But not the way you needed me
I couldn't say goodbye
Couldn't stand the pain
Couldn't watch you cry
Knowing that your heart would break
So I let you sleep
Till the morning light
When you wake up and you read the note I write
Telling you that I
I couldn't say goodbye
I didn't mean to hurt you
I didn't want to make you cry
It's over now, yes it's over now
I just couldn't say goodbye
I couldn't say goodbye
Couldn't stand the pain
Couldn't watch you cry
Knowing that your heart would break
So I let you sleep
Till the morning light
When you wake up and you read the note I write
Telling you that I
I couldn't say goodbye

The Undereducated

Just remember I don't come from the best
For what I write is but pure desire and dedication
An obsession in which I will learn my lesson
Being poor doesn't deny me the right
Today or tomorrow night
I draw you in because I write what I would want to read
Not just anything will satisfy
For I am picky only of those of true intellect
Attract my utmost intention
Think of me one who likes to read new inventions
Always original, and always a draw
I read and re read to perfect indeed
But I'm of the undereducated so I'm still flawed
Ten years of constant writing and no schooling has made me the next undereducated bread winner
A defender to those who criticize, by stereo type
But I care not
For I am what I am.
You want to judge, judge by the mistakes, in my grammar I make.
Teach me to appreciate the English language
Be my gauge, tell me what I can do better.
For I read all comments and letters.
