What I should have been, you see, is a neurologist.

There is a neurologist, a woman over at Harvard who wanted me to come talk to them, and in France I have a lot of readers in the sciences. I can't tell you why.

I was trained as a neurologist, and then I went into the theater, and if you're brought up to think of yourself as a biological scientist of some sort, pretty well everything else seems frivolous by comparison.

I wanted to be a neurologist. That seemed to be the most difficult, most intriguing, and the most important aspect of medicine, which had links with psychology, aggression, behavior, and human affairs.

I spend a lot of my time trying to draw the attention of actors to the minute and subtle details of human behavior, which was the sort of thing I was looking at when I was a neurologist.

Suzy Greenberg
Little Suzy Greenberg, with her head caved in.
Soon to let me drown beneath the undertow.
Aughta put that woman in a looney bin,
Cause you know I'd really like to be a part of her show!
Suzy is an artist - she paints quite a lot.
An artist she may be, but a genius she is not.
She says she wants to be a sociologist,
But she better first get checked by a neurologist.
Chorus
Suzy, Suzy, Suzy, Suzy
Suzy, Suzy Greenberg
Suzy, Suzy, Suzy, Suzy
Suzy, Suzy Greenberg
Suzy's 'bout as faithful as a slot machine.
Pays off once in a while, then she robs you clean.
She's always afraid that she's not sure what she's worth.
She's out of her mind, and she's not of this Earth.
Woman walks the streets like she's queen of the town.
Doesn't talk very much, she's very profound!
Little Suzy Greenberg's always playing a game.
Since the day we first met, she's probably forgot my name!
Chorus x2

Dry Eyes
three continuous days
of dilating the pupils
and closure of eyes
strange...pronounced
the assistant, how long
do your pupils take to dilate
finally considering the half dilation
after more than the usual time
the doctor summons with a smile
focuses concentrated flash light
wonders why the vision suddenly gets blurred
preceding blinding flashes of light
which to the neurologist was
a problen that needed prolonged medication
which when taken for five months
threw up the zombie in me
fear gripping every move
phobia to go about even normal activities
day two off to another specialist
field tests and stuff like that
administered twice over
because of a suspected anamoly
at the peripheri that finally led to
a retina specialist who after several
probings and focusing pronounces
'you suffer from extreme dryness
of eyes, and we need to generate tears!
it was such a relief but
what intrigues me most is,
how unwittingly i became tearless!
where must have i spent them all?
what if i wanted to cry?
for,
tears best connect us to the world...
and best cleanse us!

Ghazal (2)
Ghazal (2)
For Dawn Upshaw
O water, be the string to my guitar.
The land's encircled? Follow the evening star.
The flight attendant heads for her hotel—
The fossil of a bird rising through the tar.
Another photo-shoot for the pregnant model
We met in Andalusia, in a bar!
The way the sun burned through the morning fog—
Blood from a white-tailed deer struck by a car.
The soldier at the checkpoint waved us through,
While the mendicant examined his cigar.
A plague of locusts and a partial eclipse
Of the sun: send a virgin to the altar.
The neurologist at his retirement party
Thanked everyone for gauging him from afar.
The sun, the mountains, and the sea: these framed
The tragedy born of the scimitar.
Bored? Seeking love? Adventure? The divine?
It's a good time to go to Zanzibar.
The emperor dismissed the courtier
Who had prepared for famine instead of war.
And so they charged into an ancient land,
Like cattle herded into an abattoir.
The scholar's parting gift to the defrocked priest:
The fetus of an ape, preserved in a jar.
Take the reins, please. Now. I can't see the road,
Thanks to the blows I received from that hussar.
The naturalist bitten by a rattlesnake
Wore a black leather glove to hide his scar.
Steer clear of the volcano rising from the sea
Or else you'll lose that load of cinnebar.
They entertained the spirits of their marriage—
A turning of the bones in Madagascar.
A plume of smoke and ashes on the deck:
The startled lookout dangles from the spar.
Again they rose at dawn to sing hosannas:
If you're a Romanov, then I'm the czar.

God Must Be Wrong
Don’t beat the traffic light
Stop! When it’s red
Zoooom…goes the Mercedes
And BMW 5 Series
And Toyota Altis
And Honda
And Proton Saga
Fast car
Or not fast car
Why should you beat the traffic light?
Show off or you're too rich
You can afford to pay the summons
Are you running from something?
Touts or loan sharks
So, the police want you
And that’s made you beat the red light
To escape
“Excuse me, I want to win this race”
So you’re an illegal racer
All right, you were drunk
Or insane
And you don’t give a damn
If someone might have injured
Or died
Because you beat the red light
In life, there’s nothing new
Murder, thefts, robbery
Rape, molest, and forgery
Kidnap, fraudulent and bribery
Man got to do what he got to do
To live
Don’t tell me there’s something wrong
With our brains, the human's mind
Blame it to the creator
You know it was red
So stop
Why don’t you stop?
Those criminals
Were they wrong too
Man got to do what man got to do
To live
What exactly went wrong
Cohort of good and bad
The good one
How good is good?
They got nice home
Fast car
Loving families
Extremely educated
Highly respected
And commanded
Their jobs
But, they still beat the red lights
Gathered the whole scientists
Biologist, chemist, neurologist
Psychiatrist, psychologist, and anthropologist
Study them
Study the brains
Was there anything wrong?
Could they fix it?
Genetically engineered
Or fated
Please, don’t blame the creator
Everyone couldn’t be a President
Everyone couldn’t be a Janitor
Fair enough
No matter how clever we are
Tell this to them
You cannot create blood for lives
If you do
There’ll be no God
Remember
The Super Nova
Black holes
Milky Way
And the Galaxy
They’ve been around for billions of years
We’re merely on a short-term basis
Soon we will leave
And decease
