A week of sweeping fogs has passed over and given me a strange sense of exile and desolation. I walk round the island nearly every day, yet I can see nothing anywhere but a mass of wet rock, a strip of surf, and then a tumult of waves.

Surf's Up Tonight On Magic Island
We walk along the distant shoreline
The waves crash upon the shore
The palm trees sway in the breeze
Leaving the magic of the night in the air for the both of us
The waves are just right
So let's grab our boards
Hit the sea
And grab a wave tonight
Surf's up tonight on Magic Island
And we'll smile and laugh
Like we have not a care in the world
We'll just ride the waves
And hope for this time between you and I to be saved

Rock Island
Savage night on a misty island. lights wink out in the
Canyon walls.
Two old boys in a stolen racer. black rubber contrails in
The unwashed halls.
And all roads out of here, seem to lead right back to the
Rock island.
Ive gone back to paris, london, and even riding on a
Jumbo to bombay.
The long haul back holds faint attraction, but the people
Here know theyre o.k.
See the girl following the red balloon: walking all alone
On her rock island.
Doesnt everyone have their own rock island? their own little
Patch of sand?
Where the slow waves crawl and your angels fall and you find
You can hardly stand.
And just as youre drowning, well, the tide goes down.
And youre back on your rock island.
Hey there girlie with the torn dress, shaking: who was it
Touched you? who was it ruined your day?
Whose footprint calling card? and what they want, stepping
On your beach anyway?
Ill be your life raft out of here, but youd only drift right
Back to your rock island.
Hey, boy with the personal stereo: nothing 'tween the ears
But that hard rock sound.
Playing to your empty room, empty guitar tune, no use waiting
For that c.b.s. to come around.
'cos all roads out of here, seem to lead right back to your
Rock island.

Out Of Exile
When I first came to this island
that I called by own name
I was happy in this fortress,
in my exile I remained
But the hours grew so empty
and the ocean sent her waves
In the figure of a woman
and she pulled me out to sea
Chorus
When you come down to take me home
send my soul away
When you come round you'll make me whole
send my soul away
On the altar of a sunrise
was a wedding in the waves
And inside her shown a young light
from her labor I was saved
Though I've traveled long in darkness
in her harvest I'm embraced
Chorus
When you come down to take me home
send my soul away
When you come round you'll make me whole
send my soul away
Now the spires and the gables
grow in orchards to the sky
And the blessings on my table
multiply and divide
Chorus
When you come down to take me home
send my soul away
Yeah when you come round you'll make me whole
send my soul away
Yeah when you come down to take me home
when you come round you'll make me whole
Yeah when you come round to take me home
Send my soul away
send my soul away
Send my soul away
send my soul away

Downed
Words and music by rick nielsen
Downed, downed out of my head
round, round out of my head
Im gonna live on a mountain
Way down under in australia
Its either that or suicide
Its such a strange strain on you
Ooh, I got a mind
Over you its not the first time
Ooh, I got a mind
Rainbows crawling on a midday sun
But Ive been lucky youre the only one
Sundays calling, youll be number one
Its such a strange strain on you
Ooh, you think of jesus christ
You walk on water but dont bet your life, oh no
All you walk is a fine line
Its such a strange strain on you
Downed, downed out of my head
round, round out of my head
Too many people want to save the world
Another problem is it a boy or girl
Some say the weekend is the only world
Its such a strange strain on you
Ooh, Ive got a mind
Over you its not the first time
All you walk is a fine line
Its such a strange strain on you
Downed, downed out of my head
round, round out of my head
Downed, downed out of my head
round, round out of my head

I Am A Rock
A winter's day
In a deep and dark December;
I am alone,
Gazing from my window to the streets below
On a freshly fallen silent shroud of snow.
I am a rock,
I am an island.
I've built walls,
A fortress deep and mighty,
That none may penetrate.
I have no need of friendship; friendship causes pain.
It's laughter and it's loving I disdain.
I am a rock,
I am an island.
Don't talk of love,
But I've heard the words before;
It's sleeping in my memory.
I won't disturb the slumber of feelings that have died.
If I never loved I never would have cried.
I am a rock,
I am an island.
I have my books
And my poetry to protect me;
I am shielded in my armor,
Hiding in my room, safe within my womb.
I touch no one and no one touches me.
I am a rock,
I am an island.
And a rock feels no pain;
And an island never cries.

That's when i know my baby and i will have a good time
Surfin' is the only life
The only way for me.
Now surf, surf (surfin') with me
From the early morning to the middle of the night
Any time the surf is up the time is right
And when the surf is down and things get lazy
We'll do the surfer's stomp that's when the surfers go crazy
Surfin' is the only life
The only way for me.
Now surf, surf (surfin') with me
Now the dawn is breaking and we really gotta go
But we'll be back here very soon that you better know
You know my surfer knots are rising and my board is losing wax

He Miss The Old Town
He miss the old town by the ocean and he misses the smell of the sea
And in his moments of nostalgia in fancy he hear and see
The silver gulls above the wide beach in small flocks they call as they fly
And the soft pipings of the sooty oystercatchers echo in the clear morning sky.
He was a young man of the sixties and young men they age and grow old
All year round he rode the big surf waves in a wet suit to keep out the cold
Till he wandered far from the ocean fell in love, married and settled down
An ageing dad with teenage daughters he lives in a big inland Town.
He is out of practice for surfing and he lives far from the ocean shore
A champion young surfer of the sixties perhaps he will surf never more
You can take the man from the ocean but the ocean does not leave the man
Though far from the roar of the surf waves he well may live out his time span.
He miss the old town by the ocean though he now might feel a stranger there
A champion young surfer of the late sixties till lust for wander it took him to elsehwere
in his imaginings he rides the big waves and on his face the ocean spray
And at heart he is a coastal person though from there he lives far away.

F.M. Doll
Take my doll put on her pretty clothes
Now don't you soil her dress
Brush her hair, paint her lips like a rose
Cover up your mess
Strip baby strip 'cause your daddy is watching
Strip baby strip just for me
Strip baby strip show your mother knows nothing
Strip baby strip Just for me, oh
Someone say doctor is my friend
Bruising is his cause
Behind closing doors
Strip baby strip for the soul of your brother
Strip baby strip for his wife
Strip baby strip 'cause you know she's not willing
Strip baby strip by the knife, Yeah
I lost my doll, put on my pretty clothes
I wont soil my dress
I brush my hair, paint my lips like a rose
I cover up my mess
Strip baby strip for the soul of your mother
Strip baby strip for her life
Strip baby strip 'cause you know you're worth nothing
Strip baby strip by the knife
Strip baby strip 'cause your daddy is watching
Strip baby strip just for me
Strip baby strip 'cause you know you're worth nothing
Strip baby strip for me, oh yeah

Strange Magic
Youre sailing softly through the sun
In a broken stone age dawn.
You fly so high.
I get a strange magic,
Oh, what a strange magic,
Oh, its a strange magic.
Got a strange magic,
Got a strange magic.
Youre walking meadows in my mind,
Making waves across my time,
Oh no, oh no.
I get a strange magic,
Oh, what a strange magic,
Oh, its a strange magic.
Got a strange magic,
Got a strange magic.
Oh, Im never gonna be the same again,
Now Ive seen the way its got to end,
Sweet dream, sweet dream.
Strange magic,
Oh, what a strange magic,
Oh, its a strange magic.
Got a strange magic,
Got a strange magic.
Its magic, its magic, its magic.
Strange magic,
Oh, what a strange magic,
Oh, its a strange magic.
Got a strange magic.
Strange magic strange magic
Oh, what a strange magic strange magic
Oh, its a strange magic.
Got a strange magic.
Strange magic strange magic
Oh, what a strange magic strange magic
Oh, its a strange magic.
Got a strange magic,
Got a strange magic,
You know I got a strange magic,
Yeah, I got a strange magic,
Oo-o-o-oo, strange magic. (fade)

Piel Ballad (For the King of Piel)
king of piel, lord of ale
hear the cryer wail
be crowned this day upon piel isle
let the knights set sail
proclaim his glory
to the sea, and to the furness lands
his castle fires burn again
upon fine foudreys sands.
his jesters play, his legions march
the crowds they all do cheer
the king and queen have come at last
and with them cometh beer
come daughters come sons to the coronation
to the crowning of the king of piel
come one come all come everyone
for the legends of him are real
tis true for sure what ye have heard
in tale of folk and lore
bout strange crown and kingship passed
on down from days of yore.
bout knights and lords
and maidens fair and pirates of the sea
bout how the queen with own hands pulls
a pint for me and thee
come with thine eyes and see for sure
the glory of this place
and take a seat at courtly table
to seek my masters grace.
come young come old as stories be told
of the exploits of the king of piel
come meek come bold come to the fold
for a taste of the island feel
there is upon this peacful isle
so many things to see
and if i were to tell you all
what pleasure would it be
to walk around its shore thyself
and feel of its strange force
to touch its sand with your bare feet
and smell the air of course
feel the sense of wonder
felt by many more
for a thousand years passed
and a thousand years more
let me now unveil a tale
of some history of this spot
a wicked little narrative
with a twisted little plot
only a small portion
of the story have i got
but i hope that you will like it
erm, a lot.
to island over yonder
the one with lines so smooth
did lambert simnel wander
his falsehoods so to prove
he landed with two thousand men
who came from o'er t'sea
and with glory in his childish head
claimed King he was to be
not so dear souls for by his death
he had so lowly fell
and all of his accomplices
were despatched thus to hell
the spit he turned for king so kind
to spare his tender head
and lived as servant all his life
til death became his bed
but left behind on the island
was something rather strange
the legend of the King of piel
and who to take his place
of course the people wondered
and argued for a cause
but the choice was so obvious
the landlord, of course
who better but to keep the peace
than one who selleth ale
who better met to rule with grace
and sometimes even style
so there in passed the kingship
and so on over time
it got wrote down in stories
and sometimes even rhyme
so now bow down, pay homage to
the noble king, crowned anew
banners raise, trumpets sound
come all come all, its
his round!

Hard As A Rock
A rollin rock, electric shock
She gives a lickin that doesnt stop
She line em up, push you round
Smokin rings going round and round
Her hot potatoes
Will elevate you
Her bad behavior
Will leave you standing proud
Hard as a rock
Chorus:
Hard as a rock
Harder than a rock
Hard as a rock
Harder than a rock
The lightnin rod, strike it hot
Gonna hit you like the rushmore rock
No nicotine, and no pipe dreams
So low and dirty its darn right mean
Hellelevator
Ill see you later
No I aint gonna take it
Im bustin out
Hard as a rock

Seabirds
Mighty waves come crashing down,
The spray is lashing high into the eagles eye
Shrieking as it cuts the devil wind,
Is calling sailors to the deep
But I can hear the sound of seabirds in my ear
Surf is high an the sea is awash
An a haze of candy floss, glitter and beads
Rock that we sat on and watched in the sun
That was hot to touch
And the sea was emerald green
I can hear the sound of seabirds in my ear
And I can see you smile
Surf comes rushing up the beach
Now will it reach the castle wall and will it fall
Catfish dappled silver flashing
Dogfish puffing bubbles in my deep

A Strange Boy
A strange boy is weaving
A course of grace and havoc
On a yellow skateboard
Thru midday sidewalk traffic
Just when I think he's foolish and childish
And I want him to be manly
I catch my fool and my child
Needing love and understanding
What a strange, strange boy
He still lives with his family
Even the war and the navy
couldn't bring him to maturity
He keeps referring back to school days
And clinging to his child
Fidgeting and bullied
His crazy wisdom holding onto something wild
He asked me to be patient
Well I failed
"Grow up!" I cried
And as, the smoke was clearing he said
"Give me one good reason why!"
What a strange, strange boy
He sees the cars as sets of waves
Sequences of mass and space
He sees the damage in my face
We got high on travel
And we got drunk on alcohol
And on love the strongest poison and medicine of all
See how that feeling comes and goes
Like the pull of moon on tides
Now I am surf rising
Now parched ribs of sand at his side
What a strange, strange boy
I gave him clothes and jewelry
I gave him my warm body
I gave him power over me
A thousand glass eyes were staring
In a cellar full of antique dolls
I found an old piano
And sweet chords rose up in waxed New England halls
While the boarders were snoring
Under crisp white sheets of curfew
We were newly lovers then
We were fire in the stiff-blue-haired-house-rules

Walk On
I hear some people been talkin me down,
Bring up my name, pass it round.
They dont mention happy times
They do their thing, Ill do mine.
Ooh baby, thats hard to change
I cant tell them how to feel.
Some get stoned, some get strange,
But sooner or later it all gets real.
Walk on, walk on,
Walk on, walk on.
I remember the good old days,
Stayed up all night gettin crazed.
Then the money was not so good,
But we still did the best we could.
Ooh baby, thats hard to change
I cant tell them how to feel.
Some get stoned, some get strange,
But sooner or later it all gets real.
Walk on, walk on,
Walk on, walk on.

Ideal World
The greatest and best island of this world
Creates a sense of peace for the world.
The people desire its importance to shine,
Your own wickedness is then launched
And the island uses its waves to keep you at bay;
This may be the story of the stray cats and dogs
That want to be fetched, that want to be loved.
The inner sins committed by such islands
Are only minor in quantity, the quality of the nation
Is mostly achieved by the best of the islands.
Let confined people be held for their time,
And let the island of greatest and best nature resolve
The differences so apparent in this ideal world.

An Island Cave
then there is this island which we brave
even with a storm
the boat is small like a leaf
the waves bigger than houses
and we are so silent afraid in the middle of
this confusion
we arrive there with relief as we sit
on a rock mountain
and then we are called to get inside
this island cave
of glistening stalactites and stalagmites
water as clear as air and cold as ice
lapped our feet and the sound of
slush is sweet as a call of
a beautiful maiden wanting to be hugged.

Little Island
LITTLE ISLAND
Randy Newman
In two long wars, my country bled
To save the world for everyone
As through the years, the fight we've led
Too long, we stood alone, too long alone
And when at last, the battle won
We asked for no reward
An empire gone
Two generations turned to blood and dust
Only the best were lost
Only the best
And now the years have passed
The times have changed
The foe is risen up
He stands astride the world
His dreams of conquest all fulfilled
Little island, little island
Glory lost in the mists of time
They will pay for what was done
To those of us who died so young
They will pay for what was done
Little island, little island
Little island

Strange Avenues
Strange avenues where you lose all sense of direction
And everywhere is main street in the winter sun.
The wino sleeps --- cold coat lined with he money section.
Looking like a a record cover from 1971.
And here am I --- warm feet and a limo waiting.
Shall I make us both feel good? and would a dollar do?
But in your streets, I have no credit rating
And it might not take a lot to be alone just like you.
Heading up and out now, from your rock island.
Really good to have had you here with me.
And somewhere in the crowd I think I hear a young girl whisper
''are you ever lonely, just like me?
