London,1957-2010

Glad to be on a train heading north,
Away from ‘London of the uncouth’,
Where the milk of kindness ceased to flow
Such a long, long time ago.

Malnourished souls rushing to and fro
Always in a hurry, somewhere to go,
With no time to spare for me and you.
We hear of the war years, the blitz too,
Of friendships forged and good deeds to do,
But this is a far cry from the London I know.
Could it be that time made Londoners so,
Or is it me who has a blinkered view.

Sitting in my pot of jam
A Grandma's tight seal between freedom and me.
The air is getting rare and my health is not so fair
Surely it's time for tea.
I used to fly
I used to bee
A friend of miss Felicity
Her wings prematurely cut, so unkind
That thief who stole her from my mind.
Hours can be years if time only guests.
What a waste, what a taste
Callous world bring me back
Summer needs to be pursued
And i haven't long.
Sitting in this fruity mire in blackness
You know i cannot see, as optimism lied to me
If only your eyes could lend me sight

How Can I Sleep?

How can I sleep when the nights are long,
too long to be in bed?
The pull of the pen is calling me,
too many words in my head.

There's not enough time. Why waste it on sleep?
too many things to write.
I hear the words call out to me
too often in the night.

But what care I about the time?
It's the words I care about.
For the body when tired can always sleep
and my thoughts would probably doubt

my sincerity to this purposeful quest
to connect my mind with the page.
I have dedicated my waking hours
too often as I age.

How can I sleep when the nights are long,
too long to be in bed?
That can be left for a future time
when I've nothing left to be said.

With a bottle in his hand

I see a lightning flash
in the night
and it cuts past flats
and it draws a blue white line,
on its way down
to where it hits a tree
in the old park.

When darkness blinds me,
there’s a cigarette that glows red
and a old man sitting on a bench.

He protests with a bottle in his hand:
“Lord, take your thunder.
Not even God, can stop Kerneels Bester
to take a drink.”

The old man laughs as if mad
and takes a long drink,
before he presses the bottle
into the air.

With the bottle above his head
the man stands against the weather
and like that he still stands,
when the first big drops begin to fall
and I hear another thunder roll.
