I found one remaining box of comics which I had saved. When I opened it up and that smell came pouring out, that old paper smell, I was struck by a rush of memories, a sense of my childhood self that seemed to be contained in there.

That Smell
Whiskey bottles, and brand new cars
Oak tree you're in my way
There's too much coke and too much smoke
Look what's going on inside you
Ooooh that smell
Can't you smell that smell
Ooooh that smell
The smell of death surrounds you
Angel of darkness is upon you
Stuck a needle in your arm
So take another toke, have a blow for your nose
One more drink fool, will drown you
Ooooh that smell
Can't you smell that smell
Ooooh that smell
The smell of death surrounds you
Now they call you Prince Charming
Can't speak a word when you're full of 'ludes
Say you'll be all right come tomorrow
But tomorrow might not be here for you
Ooooh that smell
Can't you smell that smell
Ooooh that smell
The smell of death surrounds you
Hey, you're a fool you
Stick them needles in your arm
I know I been there before
One little problem that confronts you
Got a monkey on your back
Just one more fix, Lord might do the trick
One hell of a price for you to get your kicks
Ooooh that smell
Can't you smell that smell
Ooooh that smell
The smell of death surrounds you
Ooooh that smell
Can't you smell that smell
Ooooh that smell
The smell of death surrounds you

My grandfather was a newspaper publisher and his paper had all the comics in NYC, so some of my earliest memories are of reading the family paper and heading straight for the comics insert.

I Think I Smell A Rat
Oh I think I smell a rat
I think I smell a rat
all you little kids
seem to think you know
just where it's at
I think I smell a rat
walking down the street
carrying a baseball bat
I think I smell a rat
Oh I think I smell a rat
I think I smell a rat
all you little kids
seem to think you know
just where is at
I think I smell a rat
treating your mother and father
like a welcome mat
I think I smell a rat

I Like Smells
i like smells...
woodsmoke, and food,
black coffee in the morning.
the smell of rain,
of mud, of wetness.
the smell of the walls
of the cave, of the stone,
of the moss...
the smell of sex, of arousal,
of a woman's neck.
the smell of pine needles,
of an old house,
of fresh turned earth...
the smell of old books,
of old dogs, of shadows
without form...
i've even become accustomed
to the smell of death!

It Was Good Then
I go back to my childhood
And images come flying at me
These water color memories
That have faded to a certain extent
With the passage of time
Fade no more
But become no brighter.
I remember things in
Sunshine yellows
And frosty blues
Minty greens
And lavender hues.
I remember smells.
Is it even possible to remember
Smell?
But, I swear I do.
Days had their own smell
Skin had its own smell
Sticky with sweat
From playing outside at high noon.
The grass, flowers, and air
Were scented.
By some far away perfume
Carried from place to place.
I remember the feel of grass
Between my bare toes.
I remember laughter.
I remember the gnarled trunk of
A tree under my hands and
Shoeless feet
When I climbed all the way to the top
And was not afraid to look or
Climb down.
I remember being a gypsy child
Going from place to place
Town to town
Without fear.
I remember making friends
I remember innocence..
I remember
Security,
Something I have forgotten since.
I remember
Childhood
Water color memories.

The Smell Of Money
(intro)
One more day, with a tumble fall,
Down the money pit, with nothing to show
Hey hey yeah
Another twist, in the horror tale
It's an open coffin, that needs one more nail
Smell of money
Maybe I'm a victim, (Soft silk and bamboo?)
Maybe it's the smell of money
Attracts me to you...
Hey hey yeah money
Two clean shirts
I'm out on bail
As the barroom baits
They start to wail
The smell of money
Maybe I'm a victim, (Soft silk and bamboo?)
Maybe it's the smell of money,
that brings me to you
Stretched out across the ceiling
?? Domes shimmer and glow
Golden citadels
While the autumn wind billows and flows
(instrumental)
Dancing nights, in the lost and found
Move really nice to that money sound
Smell of money, smell of money,
smell of money, smell of money
I need
I bleed
(sudden stop)

Rush
I believe we rush through life so fast
We miss alot of good stuff
So don't just stop and smell the roses
Smell all the flowers
Life can be so amazing.

Eau de Cologne
Here she comes like an athlete.
She missed the train and sat on the bench next to him.
He sniffs a rare delicate smell and she smiled.
The next train came in time and she got in.
She evaporated saying him bye!
Still he feels that babyish smell at the edge of his nostril.
And this aged man flown to his childhood.

The Smell Of The Wind
the smell of the wind
consoled some of the tears in my eyes
the smell of the wind
softened some of the pain in my heart
the smell of the wind
lifted my mood by an inche
the smell of the wind
it did something to me

The Song of Quoodle
They haven't got no noses,
The fallen sons of Eve;
Even the smell of roses
Is not what they supposes;
But more than mind discloses
And more than men believe.
They haven't got no noses,
They cannot even tell
When door and darkness closes
The park a Jew encloses,
Where even the law of Moses
Will let you steal a smell.
The brilliant smell of water,
The brave smell of a stone,
The smell of dew and thunder,
The old bones buried under,
Are things in which they blunder
And err, if left alone.
The wind from winter forests,
The scent of scentless flowers,
The breath of brides' adorning,
The smell of snare and warning,
The smell of Sunday morning,
God gave to us for ours
* * * * * * * * * * * * * *
And Quoodle here discloses
All things that Quoodle can,
They haven't got no noses,
They haven't got no noses,
And goodness only knowses
The Noselessness of Man.

The purpose of my propose
The smell of roses, dwell forever in memories of me proposing. I held it in my hand, when you opened the door, it was the first thing you saw.
I saw a teardropp rush down from your eye to your chin, complimented by your smile, and before it dropped… I could tell it was a tear of joy.
Bags fell down from your hands for you to reach for me. Before you burst into tears I remember you whispering in my ear so soft, so clear, so beautiful “YES”.
Before I could open my mouth, I felt your lips against mine, your kiss so divine. And then you said: “How Glad I Am That You Are Mine…”
…THE PURPOSE OF MY PROPOSE…

I Know You Are Here
i know you are here
i have this sense of smell of a fox
a dog, a cat
and i smell your decency in your discreet
appearances
in the air in the atmosphere where you keep your silence
and secret
presence
you love me i know and you would have wanted to touch me
as i too
do
but the world has its own rules and laws of
nature
and physical dictates
its axis
its determined revolutions the way the zodiac
put the stars
you are at one end and i am at the other
we smell
each other's presence we sense each other's longings
even in a distance
of lightyears
of this interplanetary distances
yet i am the earth and you are the sky
i am the sun and you are the moon
you are the farthest star
and i am the pebble
thrown to the deepest part of the ocean floor
it is simply this memory that links us
something unfulfilled
the empty space
and the passing wind invisible always till the end of time
i feel the coldness of us
on the skin
of my cheek

Walking Forever
it seemed to him
that he'd been walking forever...
the night was brisk and cool....
a half moon, and a few stars.
every step he took he let go
of something else....
all the things he'd thought he needed....
all the things that got in the way!
pride, hurt, anger, need, and
all the images he had of what should be.....
he walked up to the door, and knocked....
she opened the door just a crack...
'what do you want? '
'i just want to hold you,
to feel you close...
to smell your smell,
to taste your taste....
to listen to you breathe
in the darkness...
to hold you while you sleep....
that's all i want,
and the world can go to hell! '
she opened the door,
...and let him in!

Sweet Reprieve Rose
Oh the smell of the sweet reprieve rose
That was thrown on the battle field for my soul
The inevitable mortal wound waits for me on yonder hill
As the dawn breaks on the time transcribed for me
Oh the smell of the sweet reprieve rose
Oh the smell of the sweet reprieve rose
When he was first enclosed
For three dark days and three lonely nights
Until he returned unto the light
Oh the smell of the sweet reprieve rose
Oh the smell of the sweet reprieve rose
When we are first enclosed
Waiting for his trumpet to blow
And for all of his people to be called home
Oh the smell of the sweet reprieve rose
