I'm constantly revising. Once the book is written and typed, I go through the entire draft again.

Moments Of Writing Poetry

Draft poems sometimes like
loose ripped off pieces of paper
to be drafted out roughly upon.

Draft poems hang around
in the strangest places waiting
to be written out one day.

Draft poems wait for a poet
to wake at the beginning of day
to be written out, in any
seized moments, sacrificed.

This is now time, shower time, eating time,
reflective time, conversation time, work time;
t.v. time, driving time, riding motorcycle time,
going to sleep time, cooking time, or any time.

Draft poems can only be written
in spared moments of seized time.

Draft poems can only be written today,
they will not wait for fair weather like hay,
which lays around waiting to be harvested.

Draft poems will not wait for a clear sunny day to dawn,
and then mature slowly, over a perfect golden summer.

Draft poems are ever now or never
if they are ever to be swiftly written.

A draft may possibly be perfected
upon any future day of favoured writing;
but a draft never written is a poem
never written, never completed, never known.

Revising a screenplay is much more frustrating than revising a song because you have to read through the entire work again while you are changing stuff. It is a lot easier to edit a song.

Now, to describe the process of the Wrapped Reichstag, which went from 1971 to '95, there is an entire book about that, because each one of our projects has its own book. The book is not an art book, meaning it's not written by an art historian.

Book Of Life

Is my name written there on those pages bright and fair
Is my name written in the book of life
If you want to be up there then down here you must prepare
And your name must be in the book of life
Get down on your knees and pray you from sin must turn away
Or your name won't be in the book of life
If you'll turn to Jesus now at his feet just humbly bow
Then your name will be in the book of life
Don't you know that Christ was sent that from sin you could repent
So your name could be in the book of life
You will have a great surprise if you fell to recognize
That your name must be in the book of life
Get down on your knees and pray you from sin must turn away
Or your name won't be in the book of life
Don't delay and don't forget that from sin you could repent
Then your name will be in the book of life
Is my name written in the book of life

Who Would Be A Poet?

Tell me, who would be a poet?
Just think what it entails...
And we know we'll sometimes blow it,
For every writer fails...
To think, that when we're feeling down,
We write to raise a smile,
But then we often have to frown,
Restricted by some style...

Eight syllables, then six below,
That's how I try to write...
Eight syllables to match the flow
Then six to keep it light...
So pretty soon verse three's arranged
Before the poem's done
And then verse four gets somewhat changed,
But don't tell anyone!

Some names get swapped and switched around,
Some placenames, too, replaced...
And suddenly an ending's found
And that has to be phrased...
My, my, it's like a Mystory Tour!
All jumbled jolly stuff,
With heartfelt tales of sweet amour
And that weird thing called lurv...

For thirty years, I've typed and typed
And typed and typed again...
I've either griped or else I've hyped
And emptied every pen...
The Writing Bug's still bugging me...
And yet how much I owe it!
Except no sweetheart's hugging me!
So who would be a poet! ?

Faded Pages

Recently I started retyping
a manuscript of short stories
I had written twenty years ago.
The pages were faded;
too much time being opened to the sun.
As I typed, I smiled
at the things I had written
and the dialogue I had created.
The stories are about a cat
and looking at the world
through his eyes and thoughts.
I had even created him a language
that I had to write a glossary
at the back of the book to explain
what some of the phrases meant.
There is a vast array of characters
and most have a funny turn.
I also remember what prompted me
to write the stories long ago.
My original intention was to write
one story and one story only,
but a friend of mine at the time
persuaded me to write another and another.
Before long, a volume was finished
with enough stories to start another.
From a one off story I have written over sixty now
about the cat and all his friends.
Now as I flick through these faded pages,
which I haven’t read in years,
I find myself being reunited
with many long lost friends.

With Fairies

One fairy arrived at the scene with flowers,
Two children made friends with the fairy;
On this dark day a crime had been committed,
Brotherly people should not have false allies.

From their mother they found blessings,
But a beetle has burrowed in their minds;
Acts come from a system that must be obeyed,
In a book of life is written entire guidance.

Conversations spread like fire, words have acted
With meanings of the fairies,
Two children are tested with a fairy
But why do they oppose the book of life?

Toward Erasure No Longer Effortful

.
That one day the book shall be written,
Odysseus come smiling through the door.
That I shall live forevermore free of provision,
be delivered presently into good, rich life
and unto the richer world, my Lover so long
turning turning turning in distance away from,
yet to manage a caress, a smooch which
neither dismisses nor fully embraces.
It is I that am and shall be erased into this
Love which shall then in time be erased
as well in the greater Sun and that Shining,
too, shall be erased. Then we shall all be
scattered, or I shall be only, embrace by
embrace, toward erasure no longer effortful.

I sift draft by draft rough toward world
now slowing in spite of parentheses these
provisional postulations of 'the good life'
to come. Eventually. There is only this
that I am living now. And my hands feel,
even perhaps are, strapped to this wheel
that turns me as turns Beloved Earth,
the Sun, too, each dreaming
near to but apart from each.

My reach is
here on my tongue,
in my fingers here
grasping words from mind.
I am ever behind in this chase,
now am further from Love,
space, than ever
though my heart
is swollen from
wanting It.

Still, world, accept my blessing.

I send this message aloft on kingfisher wings.

Going Back To Old Poems

going back to some
old poems written
years ago, i change
some words,
finding some
ways to make them
rhyme and taking in
another breathing
changing fonts
and graphics
and let the new
year pass unnoticed
rededicating them
for someone new
and lovely and caring
recycling, retitling,
reviving, revising
and so the year
may have passed
with a lesser pain.

Soldier Boy

(words & music by david jones - theodore williams)
Soldier boy why feel blue
Dont you believe that she will be true
Its written in the book
That she was meant for only you
Soldier boy tell me why do you cry
When you return shell rush to your side
Its written in the book
That she was meant for only you
So prove your love is true
Shell be there to say I do
And if you go oer sea or land
Shell make you understand
While youre gone oh try to believe
Her love for you is really for real
Its written in the book
That she was meant for only you
So prove your love is true
Shell be there to say I do
And if you go oer sea or land
Shell make you understand
While youre gone oh try to believe
Her love for you is really for real
Its written in the book
That she was meant for only you

On the Eve of my High School Graduation

(written for my cousin Connor who graduated this spring. Congrats Connor!)

Today I am the I
I have written about:
'What I want to be when I grow up' essays,
'A meaningful experience'
Acrostic poems written with newly learned cursive.

Today I am the product of
Twelve years of schooling, of
Brow-furrowing, industrial-erasing,
Citing sources, raising my hand,
Carrying bathroom passes,
Wishing for Fridays.

Today I am free to explore,
Discover, learn, grow, create
the un-typed stories, the un-thought-of ideas.
I have the ability and the responsibility to bring change
To my world, nation, state, town, neighborhood.

Today
In my shined shoes and pleated pants,
I stand ready to take on my wildest aspirations.

To me the only real star of the movie is the writer. And I work with writers very closely, from outline to first draft and on to the seventh draft, whatever it takes. Then my job is to support the director to make the best movie we can. Some producers try to go past them, but my job is to support them.
