Medicine is not only a science; it is also an art. It does not consist of compounding pills and plasters; it deals with the very processes of life, which must be understood before they may be guided.

Understanding is only misunderstanding
When you say
“I understand”
You simply confess
That you are only trying
To understand
And you affirm
To guard against
Misunderstanding
Though this may not be true
In a technical discussion
This is always true
When attempts are made
To evaluate issues
Pertaining to minds and emotions
Let us admit
We have not understood
Any one and
Any of the thought processes
Associated with any individual
How many of us
Have understood our parents?
How many of us
Have understood our spouses?
How many of us
Have understood our brothers
And sisters?
How many of us
Have understood our sons
And daughters?
How many of us
Have understood our customers,
Employers and employees
Bosses and sub-ordinates
More you are confident
About these understandings
More likely
You have misunderstood them
Do not ever claim
That you have
Understood others
As you now understand
That
Understanding is only
Misunderstanding

The Old Village Doctor
In the village where he married,
Doctor Eldebury tarried;
And for fourty years our people knew him well.
How he listered us and bled us,
How with calomel he fed us,
Only I am living now to tell.
Though his drugs were deadly, yet his heart was kind,
And with voice tuned cheerily and high,
It was "Up, now, my little fellow! livly's can be!
Come, take your medicine like a little man,
And you'll feel better by-and-by."
Count the mossy marbles in the graveyard!
Our old doctor and his patients, there they lie.
All regradless of the weather,
They are waiting there together,
For that long-sought "better by-and-by."
Some physicians talk in Latin;
Some array their wives in satin;
As for our old doctor, such was not his way.
Gleaning fees of half a dollar,
Would you find a learn-ed scholar
'Mong the mountains, riding night and day?
Saddle-bags behind him, on his "pale white horse,"
To his far off patient see him fly,
Saying "Up, now, my little fellow! livly's can be!
Come, take your medicine like a little man,
And you'll feel better by-and-by."
Oh! the doses he invented!
Us in youth he tormented
With his plasters, and his powders, and his pills;
Water for our thirst denying,
Fevered though we were and dying,
While the cool springs wasted from the hills!
Yet he thought no evil, and he meant no harm:
We had faith--yes, hope when he came nigh
With his "Up, now, my little fellow! livly's can be!
Come, take your medicine like a little man,
And you'll feel better by-and-by."

Purple Pills
Purple pills
cure all ills.
Keep them close
to mop up spills.
Fractured temple,
Cursed mind,
Not unstable,
Not unkind,
Not instructive.
Understood,
Purple pills
for greater good.
Take them first,
Take them last,
Take them always,
Take them fast.
Lesser evil,
Greater score.
Purple pills
will give you more.
Purple pills
cure all ills.
Take them quickly,
fill our tills.
Pain Pills
I took too many pain pills
To see what it would do
I took too many pain pills
Now i'm thinking about you
I took too many pain pills
My body's shutting down
I took too many pain pills
I'm lying on the ground
I took too many pain pills
I'm wishing you were here
I took too many pain pills
My death is drawing near
I took too many pain pills
It's messing with my head
I took too many pain pills......
And I think i'm finnaly dead....

Overdose
As I overdose these pills,
Watch me die,
Bring me back to life if you can,
Pump these pills out of me,
Save me,
Can you save yourself,
Overdo on things,
Watch me as I overdose,
Watch as these doctors pump these pills out of me,
Go up on the hill,
Go scream your heart out,
I might hear you but I might be dead,
Poison leading through my body,
As I lay dying on floor,
Overdose these pills,
As I sleep,
Sleeping forever,
For know one knows what had happen to me,
The story of my life will end soon,
As soon as I overdose these pills,
Remember me when I am done,
Just one memory of me,
As I overdose on these pills that will end my life,
Thinking why should I end my life or how I should I get it,
I guess it natural for me to think these thoughts,
But someday soon I will overdose.

Medicine Man
I'm the doctor, I can mend your broken heart
I'm the healer, I could take you right back to the start
So if you wanna take the chance well you better be sure
Baby, I'm the medicine man, I've got the cure
I'm the medicine man
I will make you the kinda girl that feels no pain
I can take you and put you back together again
So if you wanna jump on board well you better be sure
Baby, I'm the medicine man, I've got the cure
I'm the medicine man
That's what I am
Doing what I can
Cause I'm the medicine man
Listen, lady, don't make me drive you outta your mind
Cause together this remedy's not hard to find
So if you wanna take the chance and I'm damn sure that you do
Baby, I'm the medicine man
Now the rest's up to you
I'm the medicine man
That's what I am
Doing what I can
Cause I'm the medicine man
Medicine man, medicine man

My latter schooldays and my university days were during the war, when science - physics, in particular - was a very important and glamorous subject. A lot of us felt that if we couldn't get into science, we might try engineering or medicine.

Hoodoo / Voodoo Medicine Man
Silence, I'm ashamed, I was left as a child
Dragged from the cradle, I was weaned in the wild
Ran with the wolf pack, flesh torn to shreds
In the compensations, I was left there for dead
Read it in the paper it ain't fair
You know who today don't seem to care
Livin', lovin', gettin' loose
Masturbatin' with a noose
Now someone's kickin' out the chair
Some kind of voodoo
Come across this land
Some kind of voodoo
Be the medicine man
Everybody's lookin' at the sky
Don't believe the cover-ups and lies
They been tellin' us since birth
Pissin' off old Mother Earth
My gones are bygones prophesied
Some kind of voodoo
Come across this land
Some kind of hoodoo
Be the medicine man
Get ready
Wonder should I go or should I stay
'Cause what we got ain't workin' anyway
I did my best, God knows I tried
I feel like I been crucified
Why did you, why did you, why did you take it all away
Voodoo, hoodoo, medicine man
Voodoo, hoodoo, medicine man
Voodoo, hoodoo, medicine man
Voodoo, hoodoo, medicine man
Voodoo, hoodoo, medicine man
Voodoo, hoodoo, medicine man
Voodoo, hoodoo, medicine man
Voodoo, hoodoo, medicine man
Voodoo, hoodoo, medicine man

Take Your Medicine
Walk with my eyes closed
I bump my head
Look at the stars falling on the ground
Saw someone crawling underneath my bed
Looked in the mirror caught my reflection, said oh...
Just take your medicine
Just take your medicine
And dont complain if it dont taste good
Just take your medicine
Just take your medicine
If it dont do the trick then I know what will
Open the paper
Eat ham and eggs
Java in a cup
Middle of the front page
I saw a man with a gun
Pointing at his head
Eyes in the camera
I can almost hear him say, oh...
Just take your medicine
Just take your medicine
And dont complain if it dont taste good
Just take your medicine
Just take your medicine
If it dont kill ya first then I know what will
I met an angel
Come from above
I buy her everything
Could this be love?
She gives me sweet dreams and nightmares too
Early in the morning she whispers in my ear, oh...
(chorus)

Girl, You Have No Faith In Medicine
Girl, you have no faith in medicine
Acetaminophen
You see the medicine
Girl, you have no faith in medicine
Is there a way to find the cure for this
Implanted in a pill?
Is it just the name upon the bottle
That determines if it will?
Is the problem youre allergic
To a well familiar name?
Do you have a problem with this one
If the results are the same?
Acetaminophen
You see the medicine
Girl, you have no faith in medicine
Well strip the bark right off a tree
And just hand it this way
Dont even need a drink of water
To make the headache go away
Give me sugar pill
And watch me just rattle
Down the street
Acetaminophen
You see the medicine
Girl, you have no faith in medicine
