One way to find food for thought is to use the fork in the road, the bifurcation that marks the place of emergence in which a new line of development begins to branch off.

The Fork To Take
I had pegged you as
protégé, adoptee,
someone I could save.
The last thing
I needed
was
another lover.
You call yourself
'an accident
looking
for a place
to happen.'
I call you
my sweet, my love,
not only
because you carry knives
for me
& want to beat up
all my
ex-husbands-
but because
you can laugh
at yourself
for wanting to.
We dream
of the baby
we will never have.
The little Jewish WASP
with golden blue eyes,
poems on the tip of his tongue.
your height, my hair,
& jokes that hit
their targets
on a slant.
He will never be
in the Social Register.
But will he know
which fork to take-
as you did
when you drove
off my road,
slyly taking the wrong fork
in order to stay
the night?
O you are sly,
my sweet wheat
looking for
a harvest.
Shall I reap you?
Shall I do to you
what the hurricane
does with the waving
grain?
Shall I thresh & bind you,
run barefoot
through your body
trying to stamp out
death?
Or shall I merely
let you
lift me up
like the wind spinning
an errant seed,
& let it
take me
where it will,
right fork,
wrong fork,
no fork
at all,
since we will take
the same path
through
the air
after all?

Hollywood
by Michael Nesmith
The sun that's falling from the southwestern sky
Tells me that I must depart,
So, by sundown today, I'll be on my way,
But I'll be leaving my heart.
It's not the countryside that appealed to my eyes,
It's the spirit and it captured my mind,
But the things I tried to be made a wreck out of me,
Now a different road, I must find.
These things I think are new, I guess they're really old,
It seems I've done 'em once before
Now, to go back to that fork in the road,
Takes all the strength of my soul and more.
Oh, goodbye, goodbye you cruel town,
You've been a fair-weather friend,
Now I will go to some places that I know
Where things don't start just to end.
These things I think are new, I guess they're really old,
It seems that I've done 'em once before,
Now, to go back to that fork in the road,
Takes all the strength of my soul and more.
Oh, goodbye, good goodbye you cruel town,
You've been a fair-weather friend,
Now I will go to some place that I know
Where things don't start just to end.

Somewhere Down The Road
(Wayne Kirkpatrick/Amy Grant)
So much pain and no good reason why
You cried until the tears run dry
Nothing else can make you understand
The one thing that you held so dear
Is slipping from your hand
And you say
Why, why, why
Does it go this way
And why, why, why
And all I can say is
Somewhere down the road
There'll be answers to the questions
Somewhere down the road
Though we cannot see it now
And somewhere down the road
You will find mighty arms reaching for you
And they will have the answers
At the end of the road
Yesterday I thought I'd seen it all
I thought I'd climbed the highest wall
But now I see that learning never ends
And all I know to do is keep on walking
'Round the bend
Singing
Why, why, why
Does it go this way
Why, why, why
And all I can say is
Somewhere down the road
There'll be answers to the questions
Somewhere down the road
Though we cannot see it now
And somewhere down the road
You will find mighty arms reaching for you
And they will hold the answers
At the end of the road
Somewhere, somewhere down
And somewhere down the road
There'll be answers to the questions
Somewhere down the road
Though we cannot see it now
And somewhere down the road
You will find mighty arms reaching for you
They will have the answers
At the end of the road
They will have the answers
At the end of the road
Somewhere down the road, yeah
Somewhere, somewhere
Somewhere, somewhere, somewhere down the road
Why, why, why
There will be arms reaching, down the road
Somewhere, somewhere, somewhere
Oooh

One Road
Time...is the enemy of a young mans dreams
Im stranded...in the heartland, or so it seems
Im hitching a ride for a chance at the good life
Ill have my own place. out on fifth avenue
Im leavin this time gonna walk on that fine line
Ill be the first one who finally breaks through
One road to the promised land
I have to get there any way I can
One road to the promised land
Gonna find out just who I am
Freedom...do you know what I mean
Flatlands...are all Ive ever seen
Stuck in a small town where you live, then you die
Aint nothin but fools workin nine until five
Ill sleep in the subways till I get what I need
Im not gonna stay here, just lie here and bleed
One road to the promised land
Im gonna get there any way I can
One road to the promised land
Show the world just who I am
One road to the promised land
I thought by now Id be a different man
One road to the promised land
Guess I found out...just who I am

Without You
(Keith Urban)
Oh girl you get to me
In a way I can't believe
I need you
And who knows where just friends ends
When your cross that line and love begins
In over my head and the water's turnin' blue
CHORUS
But what would I do
Without you
What would I do
Without you
Hearts never know the way
They want to go and want to stay
We need two
But in time you find the road
And though inside you know you've gotta go
The hardest part I find
Is you're all I ever knew
CHORUS
But what will I do
Without you
What will I do
Without you
I gotta break these habit chains I put on me
And be all that I can be, try and find
what I need
Memories suspend in time
All the days when you were mine
And the chance I took to move
One I thought I'd never do
CHORUS
But I made it through
Without you
I made it through
Without you
From what would I do
Without you
To I made it through
Without you, Without you
REPEAT TO FADE

Fork In The Road
i have reached
the fork in the road,
now the choice,
both silent and grieving.
i cannot hold starlight
in aging hands,
i cannot turn the tide
with a glance or a wave.
i cannot stop the wars
with my body or my thoughts.
i cannot feed the hungry,
i can only share their hunger.
the snow is falling,
the winds almost cruel,
as the fire i built
dies down to embers...
who am i?
and what have i done?
i find i'm a part
of all that i've fought!
silent screams now echoes,
the low moans of the heart.
betrayed by my soul
between light and darkness,
my lips are moving...
but not even you
can hear the sounds they make!
the fork in the road,
just outside your door!

Epilogue
"Why can't you say what you mean straight out in prose?"
Well, say it yourself: then say "It's that, but more,
Or less perhaps, or not that way, or not
That after all." The meaning of a song
Might be an undernote; this tree might mean
That leaf as much as trunk, branch, other leaves.
And does one know till one begins? And let's
Look over hedges far as eyesight lets us,
Since road's not, surely, road, but road and hedge
And feet and sky and smell of hawthorn, horse-dung.

Branches In Time
A young tender
branch
is easily bent
into submission.
As time goes
by
maturity begins
to set in
the branch
grows stronger.
With each passing
day
she becomes able to
carry the leaves
attached
Until one day
raising her arms
high into the sky
a mature branch
emerges
refusing to bend
anymore.

The road to here and there
`
the road to nowhere
must begin somewhere
the road to anywhere
always begins everywhere
if in doubt of direction
find your spot elsewhere
then follow your feet
where your nose leads you
the road to dinner wear
ends in frozen tupperware
the road to Delaware
travels here and there

The Road Im On
She said lifes a lot to think about sometimes
When youre living in between the lines
And all the stars are sparkling, shine everyday
He said lifes so hard to move in sometimes
When it feels like Im in the line
And no one even cares to ask me why I feel this way
And I know you feel helpless now, and I know you feel, hold on
Thats the same road, the same road that Im on, yeah
He said lifes a lot to think about sometimes
When you keep it on between the lines
And everything I want and I want to find one of these days
But what you thought was real in life
Oh, it somehow steer you wrong
And now you just keep trying and trying to find out where you belong
And I know you feel helpless now, and I know you feel, hold on
Thats the same road, the same road that Im on
What you thought was real in life, somehow steer you wrong
And now you just keep trying and trying to find where you belong
I know you feel helpless now, I know you feel, hold on
Thats the same, the same road that Im on

Objector
In line at lunch I cross my fork and spoon
to ward off complicity--the ordered life
our leaders have offered us. Thin as a knife,
our chance to live depends on such a sign
while others talk and The Pentagon from the moon
is bouncing exact commands: "Forget your faith;
be ready for whatever it takes to win: we face
annihilation unless all citizens get in line."
I bow and cross my fork and spoon: somewhere
other citizens more fearfully bow
in a place terrorized by their kind of oppressive state.
Our signs both mean, "You hostages over there
will never be slaughtered by my act." Our vows
cross: never to kill and call it fate.

All Your Wishes Will be Granted
'Where's my dog-food?
I've asked a hundred times.
Where's my can of dog-food? '
a woman demanded,
Friday
at the staff and patients' meeting.
Saturday at lunch
in the stainless-steel canteen
where we queued for our food,
with knife and fork alongside,
a tin of dog-food stood on her tray.

Things Do Not Seem To Be Them After A Careful Seeing
a spoon
and a fork and they seem to appear
with food on a silver platter
when we talk we talk like poets now
after years
a spoon is no longer just a spoon
and neither is the fork
and neither is the food the food that we
eat on the table
and neither is the silver platter a mere
silver platter as it seems to be
for a spoon may be me and i may also be
a tongue and i could be a tongue to your
fork, a protrusion that stabs me like a knife
and the silver platter could be our mind
a garden where we put every seed
and the table and the cloth that covers it
with leaves and flowers
myabe our worlds, covered and uncovered
with some intricate designs
this could be our world now. a world of poems
where everything is a roll of sensitive skin
a mind so fertile with its array of metaphors
and similes and
exaggerations, and these make us so happy
we tiptoe, we choose the word, we equate
every object to a meaning, we dance to a lot
of its nuances, and then we touch and then
we are so silent. we choose not to hurt.

Spontaneous Electricity (The Journey)
every time i reach what i think
is the end of my road... something
happens...
storms come, destroying everything
behind me. the moon comes out, and
i find another fork in the path.
voices whisper, and tell me it's
going to be all right... just keep
walking...
i find i own nothing, not even the
clothes on my back... my memories,
merely twigs for the fire.
and what i thought i knew, no more
than tiny sparks in the darkness...
so letting go, i move on...
tired, and weary, too often alone...
i want to pray, but keep looking inward.
i stop to rest, and look up... that same
star from long ago... my spirit humming,
i rise up and go...
tonite, tomorrow, perhaps the end is near,
perhaps far... and i've come to know...
that life is but the journey!

Highway Song
I been walkin down the road
What it means I dunno
I been walkin down the highway
With the bad food flyin by me
I m an ordinary man
With a time bomb in my hand
It keeps tickin an I keep runnin
Tryin to find out where I come from
And there ain t nothin gonna take this road away
Nothin gonna take this road away
Nothin gonna take this road outta my heart
Nothin gonna take this pain outta my heart
I wake up sweatin in the night
Every town is only lights
I m addicted to the highway
cuz I just can t do things their way
And there ain t nothin gonna take this road away
Nothin gonna take that road away
Nothin gonna take that road outta my heart
Highway i m doin fine
You help me draw the line
No use in bein alive
If i m just rentin
I undersand the circus well
I ve played the clown when down he fell
But bein down ain t bein loser
So just look out here comes a bruiser
And there ain t nothin gonna take my road away
Nothin gonna take my road away
Nothin gonna take my road outta my heart

The talk
There was a dialogue between two drunken men;
Look! It’s not my fork!
How can I eat this pork?
The glass is also not mine.
How can I dine?
The answer was:
You are a fool!
The fork is not the main tool.
Eat with the help of your hands,
Just as the flans.
Eat and drink!
Don’t be a fink!
The food and drinks are yours,
That is what everyone adores.

Hard Road
(h. vanda / g. young)
My mama n papa told me son that youre just a fool
When I told em I was leaving home I was leaving school
So then in a couple of hours I found myself
Heading down that southbound road
With everything I owned on my back
I carried such a heavy load
And its a hard, hard road that I travel
Its a hard, hard road that I travel
Its a hard, hard road that I travel down the line
And its a hard, hard road down the line
Well I wanna tell ya friends
That its good to be a traveling man
cause Im doing what I want to
Living just the best that I can
Nobody putting rings around my neck
To put me in a pigeon hole
Ive got my dog and my radio
To listen to some rock n roll
And its a hard, hard road that I travel
Its a hard, hard road that I travel
Its a hard, hard road that I travel down the line
And its a hard, hard road down the line

Overweight with Food
Are you just a tub of lard and
Vastly overweight?
Do you think that when you die you'll
Need a piano crate
To act as coffin for your frame? -
Chosen as you die in shame, with
Only you to take the blame
For years of eating much the same:
A daily calorific fest
Gourmands of your ilk digest!
Is your heart in final fling and
Nearly set to burst?
Are your arteries bunged and clogged and
Feeling now the worst
For wear? - your aneurysm fit to blow
While blood as thick as rising dough
Cries 'Halt! ' to any hope of flow:
A dreadful state to put on show
In front of any nurse!
Best you hail a hearse.
